Chapter 16
॥The Wrong One॥
Vodia strode down the corridor of their apartment, tapping his fingers on his leg as he waited impatiently for the elevator.
Pulling out his phone, he called the lobby to make sure they had his car ready and stepped into the moving box.
Once inside and alone, Vodia buried his hand in his hair. What was he thinking? Pushing her that far. She looked so vulnerable, so fragile that he just wanted to show her that she didn’t need to be strong anymore, that he was there for her. And what had he done? Probably more harm than good. She probably didn’t even want to see him anymore.
Slamming his open palm against the elevator wall, he felt no frustration leave him. Instead, it seemed like he couldn’t even hit the wall right.
The door dinged open, and he strode out, once again looking the picture of perfection as he held his jacket loosely in his hands.
Walking past the concierge, he extended his arm out and nodded in thanks as he placed the keys into his open palm.
Getting to his sleek black car, he threw his coat into the passenger seat, following closely after it. Turning the ignition on, he fished for the paper with Raian’s address on it, and indicated to pull out.
Was he sure about this?
No.
Would he do anything for the woman he had kissed senseless and then left in their room, alone? Yes.
It didn’t matter what he wanted anymore, he would do all he could to make Kayana happy, even if she couldn’t bear to look at him anymore.
Growling in frustration, Vodia placed his foot on the gas, pressing down hard as he pulled out into the inconsistent flow of cars.
He already knew the place he was meant to be going.
॥The Wrong One॥
Kayana paced the kitchen tiles, the jug that she had turned on for tea already long forgotten, the water cooled.
She had changed into a long, midnight blue dress, with her hair plaited down her back. She had removed all makeup and now was trying to wait for Vodia patiently with no success.
What did he mean the kiss was ‘nothing’? She was pretty sure it was something, and she knew he felt it too, or he wouldn’t have initiated it nor let it go on.
She had finally felt like she was worth something, that someone actually never wanted to leave her, and what had he done? Left. Just like everyone else.
Kayana’s earlier anxiety about Vodia was now replaced with anger. Furious anger.
He had told her she was worth it. Did he lie?
But Vodia wouldn’t lie to her, would he?
Gnawing on her bottom lip, Kayana moved to sit in the living room, snuggling slightly into the side of the couch. After being with Vodia, she realised the world was not all about appearances. She didn’t have to be perfect all the time. She smiled to herself as she remembered the way he had held her on the kitchen floor, so tenderly.
This man was doing all he could to reunite her with Raian. Vodia was helping his wife go to the man she loved, with no thought as to what would happen to him. What the world would say about him and his family.
Kayana felt her heart swell in admiration and another feeling she couldn’t quite place. He was doing everything he could to keep her happy.
Of course Vodia wouldn’t lie to her. He had a reason for what he did.
She leant her head back on the settee and sighed deeply. They’d talk when he got home.
॥The Wrong One॥
Vodia pulled up to a wharf with a range of boat-houses bobbing gently in the water.
Getting out of his car, he shrugged on his jacket, making sure to leave the slip with the address behind.
If he found Raian here, this was it.
No more Kayana.
His powerful strides slowed down until he was strolling, his eyes flitting past every boat number until he found the one he was looking for, the search too short for his already breaking heart.
Breathing deeply, he looked left and right before realising he could no longer put this off.
Sending up a quick prayer, Vodia walked forward, knocking on the constantly moving door twice and stepping back again.
He shoved his hands into his pockets, knowing he had to keep them busy before he used them for something else, something more violent, namely punching someone else in the face.
His thoughts surprised him. Vodia was not a violent man. Sure, he evoked fear in numerous people, but never had he actually hurt someone who didn’t deserve it.
This wasn’t a good idea, perhaps he’d get Kallm to come and do the talking with Raian. Someone who didn’t have such a close personal attachment.
Yeah, that seemed perfect.
Turning around, Vodia pulled his phone out of his pocket, sliding to unlock it.
Quickly finding Kallm’s number, he dialled it, when the sound of a door unlocking met his ears.
“Hello?”
The phone still on his ear, Vodia turned around, looking directly at the man who had stolen his wife’s heart even before he had a chance to know it.
Raian.
“I’ll call you back.” Vodia whispered into the phone as he heard his brother questioning what was wrong.
Sliding the device back into his pocket, Vodia walked towards the man in a black robe standing in the doorway, a confused expression marring his face.
“Can I help you?”
Vodia kept his face neutral, simply extending his hand towards him.
“I’m Vodia. Kay-“
“Sweetheart, what’s taking so long? Just pay him and come back.”
A tall, leggy blonde made her appearance known as she floated into Vodia’s line of sight. Her straight, dead hair hanging limply to her shoulders and her eyes seemed dead compared to Kayana’s.
Raian smiled at Vodia as he took in where he was looking.
Winking at her, Raian continued to kiss her on the cheek and then turn her around, patting her on the bum as he pushed her forward lightly.
“I’ll be there in a minute love.” Turning back to Vodia, Raian ran a hand through his hair, his face dropping its smirk as Vodia noticed that he looked tired and run down.
Leaning against the side of the door, Raian nodded at him.
“I’m Raian. Nice to meet you Vodia.”
Raian continued to look expectedly at Vodia, waiting for him to finish his sentence.
Swallowing hard, Vodia didn’t know if he made the right decision, but he knew it was for the best.
“I’m Kayana’s husband.”
