chapter : eighteen

raena and yoongi received stares as they walked through the park they had once been in where they chased each other.

raena's shirt was receiving fingers from giggling people while their hats were receiving coos from couples.

"hey my feet kinda hurt, wanna go sit on the swings?" raena asked, gesturing to the dimly lit playground just a few feet away from them.

yoongi's face scrunched as he imagined the dust and leaves that must have been on them. but his feet hurt too so he agreed and soon they were swinging their feet in sync as they sat on the dusty swings.

"yoongi,"raena called after a comfortable silence.

yoongi hummed back in response.

"do you live with anyone? i don't know if that's too weird of a question? it's just we always seem to meet on the bus and I wonder if there's anyone you come home to?" raena asked, giving him a side glanced as he slowed his swinging feet.

"well, not really. i have a dog who my neighbor takes care of when I'm not home. i have a family but we don't talk really," yoongi shared, staring at the pebbles on the ground. "you?"

"we tend to avoid our parents because of some differences. but we love them nonetheless. i live with my brother. my twin."

yoongi playful groaned, "oh no there's two of you?"

raena resisted the urge to push him out of his swing and laughed.

"shut up!"

"my bad," yoongi smiled.

"well his name is jeongguk. he's really great but also a jerk. he's going through something rough and refuses to have any hope or optimism like i do. i wish he would get back to his actual passions of art. all kinds of art. he would sing, dance, draw, record." raena said thinking wistfully about her brother.

"that's cool, i hope he does well. i know the music and art industry is hard to get a job in," yoongi nodded.

raena hummed in response and the two sat in silence for a bit just staring at the dark sky and the stars.

"so what else happens in an all-nighter?" raena asked.

yoongi cocked his head to the side and thought for a moment. "well i usually pull all-nighters when i have to do something productive but since we have nothing to do, we should do the opposite and do something not productive."

raena faked a gasp. "you're saying you want to be...irresponsible?"

yoongi held back a laugh. "I guess. I had a stressful day so think about anything that is 24/7 always open and fun."

raena thought for a moment and gasped, "what about a carnival?"

yoongi resisted the urge to roll his eyes. "there are no carnivals in town."

"what about watching a movie?"

"depends on the movie." yoongi shrugged considering the suggestion. it would be a good thing to waste time before it becomes really late.

"if it's a boring one, i'll end up falling asleep—"

"—and if it's really good i don't think i wanna do anything after that."

raena winked, making him flustered. "look at us, yoongs, finishing each other's sentences—"

"okay! let's go to the movies and we'll figure it out from there," yoongi stood up from the swing, dusting the powder and leaves off his pants, and began making his way out of the park making a laughing raena scramble out of her seat and run after him.

——

"i paid for the outfits."

"but my money's at work so technically that's not my fault."

"it is 'technically' because who told you it was smart to run out of the restaurant?"

raena narrowed her eyes at yoongi, receiving looks from the theatre food clerk who was scratching his head unsure what to do. "you know yoongi you're becoming a little sarcastic. i don't think i like it."

"uh uh, that sounds like you're breaking rule number four about being rude."

raena gasped and looked at the clerk for help. he shrugged. yoongi shook his head and hid a smile. raena raised a brow at him.

"stop that. I'll just pay, here," yoongi reached for his wallet and handed the clerk the amount needed to buy two tickets. after he received the tickets, he and raena walked to the lobby. "next time, it's you."

raena grinned "i promise!"

the two decided to watch a new animated movie that had just come out. there was not many people so they got to sit at the perfect sit. however, when it came to where and how they would sit, yoongi began to overthink it.

he thought about how weird it would be with matching hats, sitting next to each other. it was different on the bus. on a bus, you could be strangers and in a theater, two people sitting together screamed friendship and intimacies. even if he had gone to the theaters with taehyung, there'd be a whole seat for the snacks sitting between them. he didn't think it should be anyone's business what raena and his relationship were but it just made him worried. and he knew he had no reason to be. there were like three kids and two parents here.

but with nothing to eat, nothing to fidget with, they just sat there staring at the screen. occasionally laughing, maybe glancing at each other sometimes and mostly in silence. a comfortable silence. yoongi figured raena would be one of those people who blabber during a movie but she was quiet, laughing very loudly at jokes that yoongi did not find as hilarious as she did.

he was glad to be able to sit down for some time. he didn't pay too much attention to the movie as he did the soundtrack. how amazing it would be to hear his music on the big screen. he's been working so hard on it and on tae's he really needed a break and today was just the right day.

raena was extremely focused on the movie. it's been quite a while since she's seen one. her busy yet independent life was a good one but it was rarely she can allow herself to relax. she used to go out everywhere with her brother but recently it's been a little difficult for the two of them to do anything. as he figured out his life, she believed it was best she to give him the space he needed. it was a good thing yoongi came a long. now she has someone new to bother.

the movie was a short one seeing as it was a kid's movie and raena had begun to get a little hungry but she didn't want to say anything she thought it would be better to wait until later.

as they walked side by side out of the theaters and took  in the 10:30 sky, they sat down at a nearby bench to discuss the movie.

"it was soo good! i mean yeah the jokes were a little corny but i like corny! and dude the soundtrack was insane. they did not need to go as hard as they did," raena said excitedly.

yoongi's ears perked up at the mention of the soundtrack. there was so much he wanted to comment on but he didn't want to look like a freak in front of her spouting musical jargon she probably couldn't understand.

"i don't really like corny jokes but the movie was good and nice, a little sappy for my taste—"

"hmm."

yoongi looked up at her. "what?"

"nothing." raena shrugged.

"okay..." yoongi drawled. "like i was saying it was a little sappy but it was good and i agree the soundtrack was insane."

raena snorted. "number 1, 'a little sappy for my taste'  you are literally the definition of sappy. i've seen your lyrics and speaking of that, all you have say is insane? i said insane as a non-intellectual as you called me, but you can say something like 'the chords and sequences of this soundtrack portray such eloquent blah blah'—see! i don't even know what i'm saying but the soundtrack made me feel something  so please go on and explain what i'm feeling please with your magic music words and stuff."

yoongi was taken aback. she was completely willing to listen to him babble about something she didn't understand yet she was going to try to understand. he felt almost honored but he didn't let himself get too deep into it.

"number 1," he said imitating raena. her eyes sparkled in amusement. "i'm not sappy, i'm gloomy. and 2, i...well when the music started i was..."

as yoongi spoke (as little as he could to avoid sounding geeky and expressive of his emotions), the two of them stood up from the bench and began walking back to where they started, making sure to take the path that leads to the park they had been at earlier.

it didn't take too much for raena to understand what yoongi was saying about the music. it's like she knew exactly what she was saying because she had heard the music herself and felt something good about it but she couldn't put it into words what she heard and why it sounded so good. but he was able to do that and she was glad her friend was able to do that.

conveniently, yoongi had finished his little music lesson just as they reached the park.

but before they can ask each other what to do next, raena gasped, almost making yoongi trip over his feet.

"gosh—"

"yoongs let's go to a karaoke room!" raena exclaimed. all this talk about music made her want to listen to it but in a room where she can scream from the top of her lungs.

"those can be kind of expensive and they might be booked for the entire night—" yoongi protested, immediately trying to get out of it.

"no no, but listen! i remember my coworker saying karaoke was free today for couples and since we have matching hats we can totally sneak in!!"

"you know i'm kind of tired—" yoongi began walking away.

"yoongs!" raena exclaimed, reaching over and grabbing his shirt. "come on please? i know it's going to be so much fun i am such a great singer, i promise!"

yoongi's eyes widened as he looked at her in surprise. he watched her hands grabbing his shirt at the corner of his eyes. "good singers don't call usually themselves good singers."

"I'm that good." raena smiled. she really didn't think she was that good but she knew it was the only thing to convince him.

yoongi raised a brow at her, definitely intrigued by the confidence she had in her voice.

"fine. but it better be free because i—"

"just wear your hat yoongs," raena shook her head at him, leaned in closer and with her hand grabbed at his shirt, she adjusts his bucket hat on his head and then tapped his head before walking out of the park. "come on! before it gets crowded!"

yoongi grumbled and fixed his hat the way he wanted. he in no way wanted to be associated with her as a couple. especially if it's just to get something for free. but he's a cheap person and you have to do what you have to do.

i'm still going hate this.

because it was going to be free, hopefully, they took the bus over there. raena desperately pleased to sit by the window and in the back so people wouldn't see her hideous shirt but yoongi beat her to the window seat. he got to lean his head against the window as he listened to music on his phone with his earbuds. it didn't occur to him that raena kept glancing at him, wanting also to ask if she should listen as well but she decided against it. he didn't like being interrupted with his music. she simply looked away after that and took a moment to reflect.

she was really glad how things were going with her new friend. yeah, she annoyed him and vice versa but there seems to be something there that allows them to be this way with each other without having known the other for so long. they click in a good way despite their differences and she was so glad that yoongi had the kindness to be willing to share his time with her. she often worried whether she was a little bit too pushy or out there but she was overthinking it.

raena smiled to herself in satisfaction.

without yoongi's music she'll just sing her own. so she hummed "home is far away" once again.  again, she was a pretty good singer but she never considered herself to be great especially not as great as her brother who could go places with that voice. what he planned on doing with it, is his decision if he could just wake up. but she decided she'd keep yoongi as a backup, maybe taehyung and jeongguk and yoongi can meet and ignite jeongguk's passion again.

"home is far away" had a lot of rap in it which made raena's humming make her sound like an out of breath bee. she got a few looks from people but she didn't care. and before they noticed, yoongi and raena were nodded their heads to the same beat.
