Chapter Thirty-Two

"We don't want to cause any trouble," Nora said. She stepped out from behind Kane. "We can leave right now and not come back."

The beta took a few more steps closer to them and Kane grabbed Nora by the arm and pulled her behind him. The bond between them was going off like crazy. He had to protect her. At all costs he had to protect her. He wanted her to run, and he was going to tell her to, but he was too scared that they would chase her.

"You two can go," the beta said, pointing between Nora and Kane, "but you aren't leaving with him."

"That's not happening," Kane told them.

Kane placed his hand on Mason's back, his fingers resting on top of the soft fur. There was no chance that he would leave without Mason. The two omegas laughed and Kane felt a shiver run up his spine.

He guessed that these wolves were a part of the group that had been searching for Mason. He knew what they were capable of and the lengths they would go to get Mason, dead or alive. Kane shuddered at the thought. He wasn't going to let these three get their hands on Nora or Mason.

He sized up the omegas, they would be easy to take down, especially if he had help from the other two, but the Beta was a different story. He would be a lot harder to take down, even in his human form he looked like he could take down a few wolves with ease.

"Then I guess none of you leave here," the beta said, a sly grin on his face. He motioned towards Mason. "In your human form, kid."

Mason whined. He was safer in his wolf form, when he could run faster and fight harder, but Kane wanted to avoid a fight with these wolves as much as possible. He nodded towards Mason. Mason shifted back into his human form and quickly threw his clothes on.

The beta was looking at Mason with interested eyes. "They were right, you really are different."

"No wonder they want him so badly," one of the omegas muttered.

"I don't want to fight you, but I will," Kane told them. He took a deep breath and prepared his muscles to transform. "You can't have my mate."

The beta's eyes widened. "Your mate?"

"Yes, my mate," Kane said, "and you must know that you won't be leaving with him if I'm still breathing."

"The boy is worth way more alive than dead. You however, are worth nothing to me either way."

The omegas laughed again. They took a few steps closer to the three of them, but didn't make any moves to fight them.

Mason turned to Kane. "You two go, I'll be okay," he whispered in his ear.

"No," Kane replied without hesitation.

"Listen to him," the beta advised. "If his parents had done the same maybe they would still be alive."

Kane froze. These were the people who killed Mason's parents.

"You were there that day?" Mason asked, his voice shaking.

"I sure was," he said with a sly smile.

Mason lunged towards him, his body changing into his wolf form. Kane tried to reach out and stop him, but he couldn't get to him in time. He flew straight into the beta, knocking him to the ground. Kane just saw the beta start to transform under Mason's grip before one of the omegas threw himself at Kane. Kane pushed him back and punched him in the jaw.

"Run!" he screamed at Nora, but the other omega had been running at her. He threw her to the ground.

Kane transformed quickly and growled at the omega in front of him who was now in his wolf form as well. He ran the short distance between them and slammed him into a tree. He yelped in pain as he hit the tree and slid down to the ground, landing in a pile on the forest floor. It was enough to distract him long enough, so Kane turned and saw the situation unravelling before him. Mason and the Beta were engaged in a fight, taking turns hitting each other against the ground. The beta's wolf was much larger than Mason was, almost doubling his height, but Mason was agile and much faster.

Kane wanted to go to him, to fight off the beta, but the bond was screaming at him and his eyes found Nora, who had been knocked to the ground by the omega. He was standing over her with his paw against her chest. He growled into her face and she screamed out in pain.

The bond took over and Kane ran at the omega at full speed. He knocked him to the ground but wasn't prepared when the other omega joined and he was being held against the ground. He pushed at them, snapping his jaw towards them but unable to get close enough.

Nora managed to push one of them off and slammed her jaw over their arm. Kane managed to get off the ground and used all his strength to barrel straight into him. With both the omegas on the floor, whimpering in pain, Kane turned to Nora. She was bleeding, drops of blood falling from her shoulder to the ground below. The bond screamed at him and he felt the pain in her shoulder almost as if it was happening to him. The bond told him to get her out of there, but Mason was still fighting the beta and he had to fight against the bond. He nodded towards the direction of the car, but Nora shook her head.

Mason's howl filled the air and Kane saw that Mason was on the floor, the beta dragging him away by the fur of his neck. They both ran the distance between them and Mason, knocking the beta off of him. Anger filled Kane's chest as he faced off with the beta, only a few feet between them. Kane hadn't realised until he was this close to the beta's wolf that he had seen this wolf before. This was the wolf he and Adam had seen peering through the window on the day the rogues attacked the pack. They circled each other as Nora pulled Mason away. Kane caught a glance of Mason and he didn't look good.

Kane cursed himself for not intervening earlier. He growled at the wolf, and the beta growled back just as harshly. He could see the beta was stealing glances of Mason's now still body and Kane knew he was about to make a move, so he lunged at him, knocking him off of his feet.

He fought with the beta. He was right about how hard it was going to be to take him down. He and the beta were too evenly matched. Kane was pushed into a tree and he winced as he felt the hit. He pushed back just as hard and threw himself at the wolf. They rolled around on the forest floor, leaves tangling into his fur as he tried and failed to get the upper hand.

It was then that a wolves howl sounded throughout the forest. Suddenly, the beta jumped off of Kane and howled back. He seemed to glance between his injured packmates and Mason before conceding. He sent Kane one more anger filled glance before running into the woods, the two injured omegas trailing slowly behind him. Kane considered attacking him from behind, but he recognised the howl as the same one he had heard that day the rogues attacked his own pack. It must have been their leader. The leader was calling them back to the pack, they wouldn't disobey.

Kane transformed back into his human form instantly and ran over to where Nora sat with Mason. He knelt down next to Mason, who was lying on the ground. "Are you okay?" he asked desperately, grabbing Mason by the shoulder. "Mason?"

Mason slowly opened his eyes. "Kane, are you alright?" he asked.

"I'm fine," Kane told him. He pulled Mason into his arms. "Thank god you're okay."

"He must have hit his head," Nora told Kane. She pushed back his hair to reveal a red mark on his temple. Nora then pointed to the claw marks across the skin of his chest. "His chest is bleeding too."

Kane looked over Nora, noting the slash on her shoulder that was still bleeding down her arm. "Nora," he said, his fingers touching just above the cut, "you shoulder."

"It's fine," Nora said, but she winced as she tried to move her arm.

"We need to get to the car," Kane told them. "We need to get that bleeding stopped and find some clothes that aren't shredded."

"We need to get the hell out of here," Nora told him. She stood with her hand pressed against her bleeding shoulder.

Kane helped Mason stand. "Do you feel okay?" he asked Mason.

"My head hurts," Mason admitted, feeling his temple with his fingers, "but I'm fine to walk."

Kane kept one hand under Mason's arm and helped him walk, with Nora walking next to them. They slowly made it to the car, finding the keys on the wheel where Kane had left them. He found clothes for them all and grabbed the first aid kit from the trunk.

He pressed wet gauze against the wound on her arm. Nora winced in pain. "I'm sorry," he whispered.

"It's fine," Nora said. She looked the other way. "Keep going."

Kane kept cleaning the wound. He felt her pain through the bond, accompanied with the guilt of knowing he let this happen to her on his watch. He felt tears come to his eyes. "Both of you are hurt, I should have been able to fight them on my own. I should have told you two to run."

"They would have killed you," Nora replied. She grabbed his hand. "Kane you can't blame yourself for this."

"You should blame me," Mason murmured from behind them. He slowly walked to where they were and perched himself on the trunk of the car. "I was the reason for all of this."

"I don't understand, how did they know you?" Nora asked. "How did they know your parents?"

Mason bit at his lip and looked over at the woods. "We should get out of here. What if they come back?"

"In a moment," Nora said. "Tell me."

"They want me because of what I am," Mason told her. He blinked back tears. "You saw my fur, it's as rare as they come. They killed my parents and they are willing to do anything to get me."

Kane placed his hand on Mason's knee. "Hey," he said, "none of this was your fault. You didn't ask for any of this to happen."

"I started the fight."

"It was going to happen no matter what," Kane reminded him.

"You should have left without me," Mason told him. "You two could have died today."

Nora spoke up, "But we didn't. We stuck together and got out of there alive."

"I should have told you before that they were after me, that I was the reason those rogues came to the pack. They were searching for me that day."

Nora shrugged. "It wouldn't have changed anything. You two seriously need to stop blaming yourselves for everything. We were met with grave circumstances today and we got out alive. Can we just be thankful for a moment?"

Kane nodded, and so did Mason.

Kane handed Mason some gauze. "For your chest," he told him.

Kane quickly finished patching up Nora's arm and then they got back in the car. He drove fast down the road, his mind set that they weren't making any more stops until they arrived at the Rosemont pack. He couldn't guarantee that they weren't being followed, so he didn't exactly follow the map and made turn after turn, his eyes always glancing at the woods to their sides.

"How far away are we?" Nora asked from the backseat after a few hours.

"Close."

"Do you think we lost them?" she asked.

"I think so, but we won't stop until we get to the pack, behind their gates."

"How are we going to get home without crossing into their territory?" Mason asked.

"We will have to ask the Rosemont pack, see if there's another way back. I don't want to risk us going anywhere near those rogues again."

"They don't know what pack we are from," Nora said. "They won't be able to trace us, right?"

Kane didn't want to tell them that that if he had seen that wolves face before, then there was a chance that wolf would have recognised his own face as well. If he did remember, then he knew exactly which pack they were from.

"Right," he said, omitting the possibility of that being very, very wrong.

He would deal with that later, he decided, as he saw the sign coming up which read, Welcome to Rosemont.
