Chapter Ten
They both fell to the ground, an intangible force pushing them apart. A scream fell from both their lips. Kane clutched his head, the room spinning around him. He blinked until the room became clear, and he was faced with the image of Nora and Duncan standing in the doorway, fear in their eyes. Behind them stood people whose faces weren't clear yet.
Kane looked over at Wyatt and they shared a look that seemed to last a lifetime. He had never seen so much anger on Wyatt's face. In all the years they had been friends and the months they had been more, he had never seen Wyatt genuinely angry until this very moment.
"What did you do to him?!" Duncan screamed. He fell to the floor next to Wyatt and clutched his hands. "Are you okay?" he whispered.
Wyatt nodded. He slowly stood up with the help of Duncan. "I'm okay."
Kane still heard a ringing in his ears when Nora came and grabbed him by the hands. "Kane, oh my gosh, what happened?" she asked, genuine concern in her voice.
Kane ignored her and took his hands from hers. He stood and it took all his strength to stay upright for the first few seconds. Kane met Wyatt's eyes. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "I-" he tried to apologise again, but Duncan was already pulling Wyatt from the room.
Kane saw Adam who was standing in the doorway. He moved to let Duncan and Wyatt pass, but then he was in the room with them. His eyes were full of questions, but Kane couldn't answer them yet.
"Kane," Nora stood in front of him, "are you okay?"
He nodded, but no, he wasn't okay.
The three of them stood in the room in silence, more people in the doorway looking in. Kane didn't know what to do or what to say.
Adam stepped forwards. "Do you want me to drive you home?" he asked.
Kane sent him an appreciative look for that being the only question he asked. "I just need some air."
"Come on, I'll take you outside," Nora said. She put her hand on his arm.
Kane shrugged away from her. "I just need to be alone right now. I'll find you soon, okay?" He didn't wait for a response, instead he ran downstairs, pushing past the people who were all congregated on the stairs, wondering what all the fuss was about.
He caught a glimpse of Wyatt, hidden under Duncan's lanky arm, as he rushed them out the front door. He could see almost everyone whispering in small groups, their eyes on him. He felt his breath catch in his throat and he ran towards the sliding door to the patio. He pulled back the edge of the curtain that was blocking the door and dipped under it. He yanked the glass door open and closed it just as quickly behind him with a sigh.
The patio was like a different world, the glass blocking most of the music until only the slightest blur of sound escaped into the air. The dark curtain kept the eyes of those inside away, but the light was also blocked out. There was one light that hung above his head, it gave off enough light to see, however, his vison at night wasn't exactly compromised with or without the light.
He sighed, his back still pressed against the glass. The effects of whatever had overcome him had finally worn off and he was purely left with the bad feeling in his gut. He didn't know why he just did that. He wished that he hadn't. Did he mean what he said? Did he really love Wyatt?
"Why did I do that?" Kane muttered to himself.
"I'm not sure," a voice replied.
Kane sprung forwards his eyes searching for a person to match to the voice. He didn't have to look long, just to the side of him was a long bench seat, a boy sitting towards the end. He was wearing a lose grey shirt that looked a few sizes too big and tight dark pants.
"Sorry," Kane said, "I didn't know anyone was out here."
The boy turned and looked at him. Kane felt entranced for a few seconds. He had never seen anyone like him before. His hair was bright blonde with tones of light brown, which itself wasn't too unique, but even in the dark lighting he could see his grey eyes. Grey eyes were solely an omega characteristic. He wasn't sure who this boy was.
"You can stay," the boy said, those grey eyes wide and soft. "I'd like some company."
Kane slowly sat down on the bench seat, an arm's length from the boy. "You know there's a house full of people inside."
"I know," he replied. The boy shrugged.
"So why aren't you in there, with them?" Kane asked. He took a moment to stop himself. "You don't have to tell me if you don't want to."
"They ask too many questions," was his simple reply.
"I feel as though I will do the same thing," Kane admitted.
The boy shrugged. "Your questions appear to be of more relevance than theirs."
"What were they asking?" Kane wondered.
The boy smiled and pointed his index finger towards his face, circling around his hair and then eyes.
"They want to know what you are," Kane deducted.
"Don't you?" the boy asked.
Kane shook his head. "I want to know who you are, not what you are."
The boy smiled. He laughed quietly. "That's quite.... romantic of you."
Kane ignored that. He nodded towards him. "So, who are you?"
"That's quite the question," the boy replied. "What do you want to know?"
"What do you want to tell me?"
The boy sat up straighter. He extended his hand and gave Kane's a quick shake. "I'm Mason. I paint, mainly watercolours. I like to run." He paused for a few moments, but Kane could tell that he wasn't quite done. "My mother was an Omega and my father was a Beta. Usually, kids like me turn out almost discernibly omega, but apparently not me."
"I thought you weren't going to say what you were?" Kane asked.
"What I am is a part of who I am. Do you not agree?"
Kane would have agreed a few days ago. Now, he wasn't quite sure. "You're quite philosophical, aren't you?"
"You're quite inquisitive," Mason replied. "Now, who and/or what are you?"
Kane glanced back at the concealed glass door. He thought of Nora, the girl somewhere behind that glass, probably crying over him. She was a part of him now, he needed to stop pretending like that wasn't the case.
"I'm Kane and I'm a Beta, through and through. I like to hike and explore. I have a mate, her name is Nora."
Mason took a fleeting second to process this information. "I think I might have met her before. She's in a red dress?"
Kane nodded. "That's her."
"She asked me if I was wearing contacts."
Kane laughed. "Oh."
Mason didn't seem offended. "I'm used to it. She did ask my name first, however, which is a treasured rarity."
"People want to know your ancestry before your name?" Kane asked, surprised.
Mason nodded, bits of his blonde hair falling into his eyes. "My appearance draws many questions, few of which are socially acceptable unless you're talking to an Omega, or who they think is an Omega in disguise." He scrunched his face up at the word disguise.
"I'm sorry you have to deal with that," Kane told him sincerely. The amount of inquiry into his personal life over the past few days wouldn't have made a mark in what this boy must have experienced.
Mason shrugged. "I'm not. It's life. I'll make it through. At least I always have a talking point, it just gets a bit, much, sometimes."
"Like now?"
"Like before," he said carefully, "not like now."
"You're Amelia's new neighbour, aren't you?" Kane asked, having put the pieces together.
"Yes. She invited me tonight."
"I'm glad she did."
Mason smiled slightly. "Me too."
Kane looked out at the trees past the patio. "Do you want to go for a run?"
Mason didn't miss a beat. "Yes. Can we transform?"
Kane nodded. "We have until ten, then we have to be back in human form."
"Why?" Mason asked.
"Alpha's rules."
"Oh."
Kane glanced at his phone. "We have a while."
"Do you need to tell your mate that you'll be gone?"
Kane shook his head.
If Mason thought that was weird, he didn't say anything. He stood from the bench seat and pointed out at the tree's that faced the patio. "Well, let's go then."
Kane smiled and followed his lead. He jumped off the side of the patio railing and landed on the soft ground beneath with a thud. He looked up and saw Mason, peering over the side of the edge.
"Are you okay?" Kane called up. He wondered for a fleeing moment if Mason was scared.
Mason jumped down quickly, landing almost on top of Kane in the process. He laughed, and Kane liked the sound in his ears. It was happy. Almost childlike.
"Sorry," Mason said with a smile. "I didn't mean to almost squish you."
Kane smiled and pulled his shirt from over his head. "Follow me, I'll show you around."
Mason kicked his shoes off. "Promise me that you won't abandon me in this forest?"
Kane wasn't sure if he was being serious or not, but his answer was. "You're a part of this pack now. You're one of us. It's my duty as a Beta to protect you."
Mason tilted his head. "That's the only reason you wouldn't leave me in the forest?"
Kane laughed. "You aren't very trusting, I'm assuming?"
Mason pulled his shirt off over his head. Kane's eyes drifted down to his chest, smooth, marble skin covering every inch of Mason's body. There was not a blemish to be seen.
"Trust isn't my issue, I am more interested in the reasons behind your actions. Does being a Beta influence the way you see me?"
Kane shook his head. "I don't think you're automatically weak, if that's what you think."
"Good," Mason mumbled, saying nothing more.
Kane assumed that was the end of the conversation. He pulled his pants down and transformed in one motion. He fell to the ground, his bones moving of their own accord beneath his skin. It felt like this was the first real breath he had taken in days. His paws pushed into the earth, his back stretching out.
Mason was next to him after a few moments. Kane had to blink a few times when he looked at Mason. He had never seen a wolf so beautiful. His fur was light grey, a colour that Kane had never seen on a wolf before. Omega's had stark white wolves, beta's and alpha's were mixtures of browns and blacks. This wolf, however, was grey. What shocked Kane the most though was that between those grey strands were thin strands of shiny silver. He had never seen a wolf's coat shine like that.
Kane didn't want to make him feel uncomfortable, so he averted his huge eyes. He pointed his paw out towards the forest and made a low noise under his breath. He ran out into the forest, threading through the trees, his paws bounding him forwards. Mason was right next to him, just as fast as he was. Kane had never known of anyone other than a Beta to keep up with him like that.
He ran throughout their section of the forest, running in the dark, the moon shining brightly above them the second they stepped out from the protection of the trees. They ran the entire border of the town. Kane tried not to look at the broken sections of the wall as they passed them. It was too much for his brain to handle. Instead, he kept his mind on the feeling of the dirt between the pads of his paws and the wind as it blew around his face.
He dodged trees like he was playing a game of human frogger, just bounding in the other direction right at the last moment, falling more than a few times. Mason somehow seemed to anticipate his movements before he made them and didn't fall over even once. Mason's smaller frame allowed him to fit into smaller spaces, so he ducked under tree branches that Kane had to go around.
It became a game, more and more as they went along. Kane just catching the lead as Mason would push his legs harder and bound in front of him. Kane knew that this boy was going to be his friend. When he ran like this with his other friends they usually gave up pretty fast, abandoning him and just waiting for him to come back. If Mason had done that, then he would have stopped, but instead it seemed as though Mason was loving the game just as much as him.
Kane didn't even realise how long they had been going until he noticed Mason start to slow down. They were close to a small lake. He slowed down alongside him. He was surprised when Mason suddenly transformed back into human form. Kane stayed in his wolf form for a moment, making sure that the boy was okay. He looked down at Mason, who had collapsed down on the ground, his hands over his lap. He was breathing quickly with a grin on his face.
"That was the most fun," he took a few shallow breaths, "that I've had in a long time."
Kane transformed as well. He stood above him, a proud smile on his lips. "You've impressed me, philosophical boy."
Mason continued to breathe fast. He reached into the lake and splashed some of the water on his face. He splashed some over towards Kane, who just laughed.
"You were damn hard to keep up with," Mason told him. He placed his hand over his heart. "I think I might pass out," he joked.
"You've got more stamina than most of the Beta's around here," Kane told him. "You can come running with me any night."
Mason smiled. It was a pretty smile, dimples and parted teeth. "Thanks, bad decision boy."
"Bad decision boy?" Kane asked. "Is that my name?"
"Well we met due to a bad decision on your part, isn't that correct?"
Kane had completely forgotten about what had happened back at the house. The mere memory was enough to make his gut hurt. He shrugged, ignoring the feeling in his stomach that reminded him of the guilt and confusion that was still swirling around in the back of his mind. "You're not wrong."
"Are you going to tell me what that bad decision was?" Mason asked between huffs.
Kane opened his mouth to reply, but suddenly noticed Mason's eyes wandering downwards. He was acutely aware that he was stark naked, standing above Mason. He was quick to sit down, his knee's bent and legs firmly together.
Mason must have realised what had happened as his marble skin turned a deep shade of red for a fleeting moment.
"Well?" Mason whispered.
Kane prepared a comeback but he paused. He turned his head. He could hear something. Rustling, movement, quiet whispers. He stood quickly, hastily moving his finger in front of his lips. Mason stood silently next to him, his quick breaths the only sound coming from them.
Kane looked towards the wall, the same direction as the sounds. He didn't need to see them to know exactly who were making their way through the tears in the wall. The smell was a dead giveaway. He knew after half a second who they were. Rouges. A lot of them.
Kane turned his wide eyes towards Mason, who mustn't have been able to smell them yet.
"Rogues. Rogues are coming."
What do you guys think of Mason?
