As they passed the gates that led them into Burlington, Kane thought about how surreal it all was. This was more than what he had hoped to accomplish in their road trip. Albeit, Nora did almost die, but other than that, uh, slight hiccup, things had really fallen into place. He and Mason had been mates for almost a week, and he couldn't have been happier. He had never seen Nora so happy either. He glanced into the rear view mirror. She and Owen were in the back, talking quietly between them, their hands interlinked in her lap. Eve sat to their side, her eyes on the town. In the space of one road trip he'd found a mate, found his ex-mate a mate and made friends for life. Now, that was more than what he'd planned to find.
They had spent the last week with the Rosemont pack, Nora being introduced to her new family, while she and Owen got to know each other better. He was glad that the three of them decided to come back to Burlington with he and Mason for a few days. He always wanted Nora to think of this place as her second home as well, even if she was going to move to Rosemont permanently.
Kane turned the car off the main road. "We aren't heading for your house?" Mason queried from beside him.
"Adam wanted us to stop by his on the way home," Kane explained, his eyes on the road.
"I haven't met your Alpha yet," Eve said from the back. "Can we introduce ourselves?"
"Of course," Kane told her. "He will be happy to meet you guys."
"How are things between you two?" Nora asked before hesitantly adding, "after everything that happened."
"We talked on the phone a lot this week and we really sorted everything out. I think things will be a lot better from here on out."
They parked in Adam's driveway and made their way to the front door. Mason reached over and joined their hands as they walked. Kane knocked on the door. He wasn't surprised that it was Adam who opened the door, but what did surprise him was that it seemed like the whole town was standing behind him.
"Welcome home!" they all yelled out in unison.
Kane laughed, his eyes darting behind Adam at the different faces that stood behind him. "Is this a surprise party?"
"It's a welcome home party, didn't you hear your greeting?" Adam teased with a smirk. He reached over and encased both Kane and Mason in a hug. "I'm so happy for you guys!"
When Adam let go he ushered them inside and greeted Nora, Owen and Eve. Kane looked around the room and nothing could have pulled the smile off of his face. His friends and family stood before him. He squeezed Mason's hand. "Meet my mate everyone," he said, smirking across to Mason.
Mason laughed and waved shyly. "Pretty sure we've all met before," he murmured, "but thanks for the introduction."
Kane made his way around the party, introducing Owen and Eve to everyone. Mason's aunt came running over to them and showered them in hugs. After the introductions, he found his friends who had moved to the tables outside. Violet sat on Adam's lap, with Amelia and Tyler on the other side of the table. They smiled brightly as the five of them joined them at the table.
"How long do you two plan on staying?" Adam asked Eve and Owen. "You're welcome to stay as long as you want. Especially after all you've done for my main man over here," he nudged Kane who sat to his side.
"We will be here for a few days," Eve told them.
"We are looking forward to spending some time here and getting to know you all," Owen explained, "We've heard a lot about this place."
"I really wanted Owen to meet you guys," Nora told them. Her gaze travelled down the table. "You have all become family to me."
Violet sighed, a small smile on her lips. "I do wish you could stay here, Nora," she admitted, "but I am so delighted that you've found your true mate."
"She won't be a stranger," Kane assured them. He looked over at Nora and It reminded him of what Mason had said, she had felt like her life here would be over once the bond was righted. She couldn't have been further from the truth. She would always be a part of his life. They had some high highs and low lows, but she and him shared a bond that was unique. There were no other friends that he knew like them. They had been through their hardest times together, and that meant everything to him. "There will always be a place for you here."
Nora nodded silently. She and Kane shared a look. Kane knew that she understood the truth behind his words.
"The same goes with Rosemont," Owen told them. "All of you are welcome to visit anytime."
Kane's phone vibrated in his pocket. He excused himself from the table and walked out onto the yard. It was an unknown number and he answered it with caution, a slight worry that it would be one of the rogues. "Hello?"
The voice on the other end was way too put together to be a rogue. "Hello, Mr. Moore."
Kane recognised the voice instantly as the Alpha of the Maysville pack. "Alpha," he greeted. "How can I help you?" Kane looked back at the porch behind him, his friends all talking happily.
"I have spoken with my niece. She has filled me in on the events that transpired over the last couple of months. I wanted to thank you." Kane didn't understand. What was it that he was thanking him for? He had let his niece be kidnapped and almost drowned, and that was just in the last week. The Alpha continued, "You found Nora when she was almost killed by those rogues and got her to safety. For that, you and your pack will always have our allegiance."
"Thank you," Kane exclaimed. "That means a lot to our pack at the moment. We have been having some issues as of late, which I am sure you're aware of."
"I am familiar with your packs state of affairs, and that is why we are going to continue to financially support the Burlington pack as much as needed."
Kane could have cried as he heard the words. Rita had been wrong. Fixing the bond wasn't going to destroy his pack, it was hopefully going it save it. "That is very kind of you."
"I have already spoken with Alpha Victor and your father, however, I wanted to speak with you personally as well. I am aware of the situation you kids found yourself in and I strongly commend your courage and resilience. You saved my niece. If you ever need anything, just let me know."
His words meant a lot to Kane. "Thank you, Sir."
Kane finished the phone call and slowly made his way back towards the table. "You look happy," Tyler commented as he sat down. "Who was that?"
"Just some good news," Kane responded. He sent Nora a thankful smile and she knowingly nodded.
Grace came running out onto the patio. She jumped onto Kane's lap. "I missed you," she said loudly.
"I missed you too!" Kane told her. "Did you watch Heath while I was gone?"
"She kept me under lock and key," Heath responded as he and Peyton walked out of the house and joined them.
"He snuck out to a party and got in trouble," Grace admitted.
Kane laughed. "Great example you're setting," he chastised Heath.
"You weren't supposed to tell him that," Peyton told her with a smile. She reached over and tickled her. "I thought the three of us had a deal!"
Grace laughed. Kane pretended to push Peyton's hands away. "Nora help me!" she called out.
Nora laughed and pretended to tackle Peyton. "I'll save you, Grace!"
They were interrupted when Kane's mother coughed in the doorway. "Kane, can you come help inside for a moment?"
Kane stood up with Grace in his hands and placed her back on the chair. He nodded towards Nora, "Make sure these two don't get to her," he joked, pointing towards Peyton and Heath. Nora nodded with amusement. Kane followed his mother through the house until they got to the kitchen. He went to pick up a plate of food. "Do you want this outside?"
She shook her head. His mother sounded nervous, "I just wanted to speak with you, first."
Kane pulled out a stool and took a seat. "Okay."
"I wanted to tell you that I am so happy that you three were able to fix the bond."
"Yeah, me too."
She blinked a few times and Kane wondered if she was holding back tears. "There is no excuse for what I did, but I would have never done it if I knew it would hurt you like it did. I love you, Kane. You and your brother and sister mean the world to me and your father. I am sorry for what I did. I do hope that one day you can forgive me."
Kane stood from the stool and wrapped his arms around her. "It's okay," he said to her.
"I'm so sorry, darling," she told him as she hugged him back.
Kane pulled back and looked at his mother. "It's okay now," he assured her, "Mason and I are happy. Nora's found her real mate. I know that it's pretty crazy, but maybe this is what was supposed to happen all along."
"What do you mean?"
"If you didn't swap my mate, then Nora wouldn't have ever been in my life. If I didn't save Nora from the rogues then the Maysville pack wouldn't have supported us and the pack would have suffered. Because of what's happened, not only am I with my right mate, but the pack is in a much better position. Maybe Rita was right, that without her spell her premonition of the packs future would have come true."
"You might be right, Kane," she agreed, "but at the end of the day I'm just thankful to the Moon Gods that you're okay."
"I'm more than okay," Kane admitted, "being with Mason makes me happier than I've ever been."
She kissed his forehead before pointing to a plate of cookies. "Go take that plate outside, and tell your brother not to eat them all."
"You know he and Nora will probably fight to the death over them."
"Oh, I know," she muttered with an eye roll.
They both laughed. Kane picked up the plate of cookies and walked through the house back to the patio. He was surprised to see that more people had joined them outside. Wyatt and Duncan were standing together at one end of the table, talking with Amelia and Tyler. They looked up as Kane sat the plate down.
"You guys made it!" Kane exclaimed.
Wyatt walked over to him and threw him into a hug. "We wouldn't have missed it!"
"Have you met Mason?"
"I don't think we've ever been properly introduced," Wyatt said. He shook Mason's hand. "I've heard so much about you."
"Nice to meet you," Mason said.
It was a strange sight for Kane to see. Before he had met Mason, there was no one Kane could see himself with besides Wyatt. He had been so sure that he loved Wyatt, but when he felt the bond between he and Mason he realised that it was a different type of love he had felt. Wyatt would always hold a special place in his heart, but Mason was his soul mate, his future. It was surreal to watch them interact, his past and future.
He looked around at his friends. Tyler and Amelia, happy as ever, talking with Eve who had a big smile on her face. Heath and Peyton speaking quietly, probably planning their next prank or party, the former just as likely as the latter. Nora and Owen, eating cookies together, their eyes never leaving the other. Adam and Violet, looking as close as ever. His friends had been through so much, and yet here they were on the other side. He felt a wave of gratitude fall over him. He didn't know how he got so lucky.
Later, as he slipped under the covers of his bed, Kane turned to Mason. "I think this was how it was all meant to be," he said.
Mason rolled over to look at him. "What do you mean?"
"If my mother hadn't made that deal, then everything would have been different. I think that this was exactly what the Moon Gods and Goddesses had planned all along."
Mason pressed a kiss to his lips. "I think so too. It brought all of us together." He looked around the room. "You know, I really didn't think I'd make it back here," Mason mused.
"Are you glad that you did?"
Mason nodded, his eyes staring into Kane's. "I am eternally grateful that I did."
"It really hurt me when you decided you were leaving," Kane admitted after a few moments of silence. "I know why you did it, but it doesn't hurt less."
Mason nodded slowly. He reached out and wrapped an arm around Kane's waist. "I promise to spend every day making it up to you. I won't ever, ever leave again. It was stupid and I should have realised it wasn't the right call."
"I won't wake up to find you running away in the distance?" Kane asked with a smirk.
"Certainly not."
"So, there's no curse in the way of our bond," Kane stated.
"Yeah?"
"And, there's no group of rogues hunting you down," he listed.
"Finally."
"And, there's no friends pushing us apart."
"Thankfully."
"And you're definitely not planning to run away anytime soon."
Mason shrugged, "Unless you keep referring to me as your Boyfie-mate."
"Fair enough. So, with all of that out of our way, what do we do now?" Kane asked, a playful smile on his lips.
"I don't know," Mason admitted. "I just know that whatever it is, I want to do it with you."
"Me too," Kane agreed. "The Boyfie-mates taking on the world?"
Mason shook his head with a smirk, "More like bad decision boy and philosophical boy take the world of monogamous relationships."
"Sounds thrilling."
Mason kissed him, and Kane was reminded yet again of the power of the bond. Sparks moved throughout his body as Mason's hands rubbed up and down his back. A bomb could have gone off outside his bedroom window and all he would know is Mason's soft lips. "It will be," Mason whispered.
The end.
