Chapter 4: Janson's Theories

Evelyn sat bolt up right, panting wildly.

"Well the adrenaline injection worked."

Evelyn's heart was beating so fast it hurt, it slammed into her chest. Her eyes were wide open. Her head spun around, trying to figure out what was going on.

"Good morning Subject X."

Evelyn turned her head the other way. Janson was leaning against the wall, a bored look on his twitch face. He was wearing a white turtleneck sweater under his white suit. He was holding a book and a manila envelope shoved full of papers. Disgust filled Evelyn. She had a brief thought of lunging at him and sucking his life.

"I wouldn't do that. Remember what happens if you don't comply?" Janson said sweetly, raising his black remote. He pushed a button and the screen came on.

Evelyn deflated in defeat. Her eyes glued to the screen. Minho, Newt, Teresa, Sonny, Nick and Clint were all up on the screen. Her heart broke again.

"What now?" She whispered.

"Yesterday's display was quite extraordinary. Without the suppression of your powers, you were able to bring Subject A4 back to life! He has passed all his medical exams and will be joining the others shortly. However my medical team had to work quite hard to keep you alive. You were out for three days."

"Life for a Life."

"Indeed that's how it seems to be. I have three individuals for you today. The first is someone familiar to you. Make you feel at home."

Janson pressed a button and a gurney was rolled in. Janson pushed off the wall and followed the doctor before he got to the door, he turned to look at Evelyn.

"I have somewhere to be soon, fix the problem quickly."

The door snapped closed. Evelyn's chin quivered. She hated this. Being used, manipulated, lied to. She looked around, it was the same room she woke up in last time. Bright white walls and ceiling, cement floor, a two way mirror on one side, a screen with her friends, and now that she looked around, she saw cameras in the corners.

She ran a shaking hand through her hair, and looked at the gurney. She had a suspension, but she wasn't sure. She saw short dark hair. She slowly got up and stepped over. She pulled the sheet. Her suspension was correct. It didn't help the hurt, the shock and the pain. Jeff lay on this gurney. Holding a hand over her trembling mouth she placed a hand on Jeff's chest.

She felt his heart still beating, but hardly, it was struggling. She she knew, by just feeling him, his body had an infection. She pulled the sheet more. His torso was ripped open and shredded. He had lost so much blood, his entire body was slick with a fever induced sweat.

"Oh Jeffy. I'm sorry!" She whispered, gently holding his face. "What did they do to you?"

"Subject X, hurry up. I have somewhere to be. And he's dying."

Evelyn threw a very nasty look in the direction of two way mirror. She placed her hands on either side of Jeff's mangled stomach and took a steadying breath.

She could feel her powers swirling around. It was shocking to her how much that chip in her head surpressed her powers. It was easier to harness them and they seemed to be stronger. However, she also knew that her powers did drain her. Reviving Chuck apparently nearly killed her. Trying to fix this mangled mess would probably take her close to that point again.

Closing her eyes, clenching her jaw, all her muscles tensing. She forced the hot tingling healing powers down her arms and into Jeff. She could feel his insides untwisting and mending together. With a grunt she forced another wave into Jeff's body. She could feel the infection leaving. She was sweating and panting.

"Come on Jeff!" She groaned, "please."

Her vision swam for a second, she shook her head, and with another yell, she felt a surge and the last bit of his body knit back together. His breathing was easier and rhythmic, his heart was steady. His eyes fluttered open.

"Jeff!" Evelyn cried, and strangled him in a hug.

"Evy? What the shuck happened?"

He raised his arms and hugged her back.

"Last thing I remember was pushing Minho out of the way, and the Griever snapping at me."

"We escaped but not from WICKED. We're still with them...their using me-"

Screams filled the room. Evelyn ripped herself away from Jeff and spun to the screen. Everyone was screaming in pain.

"STOP! STOP! PLEASE DON'T! JANSON STOP!"

"You will stay silent." Janson's voice hissed through the intercom.

Evelyn nodded her head. Her eyes full of tears. She sunk to the floor. Her legs felt shaky and her head was dizzy.

"What the shuck is going on?" Jeff asked swinging himself off the table. He crouched in front of her.

Evelyn just shook her head tears running down her face.

"Evy? What the shuck is happening? Where are we?"

The door behind them opened up and a few guards in black military gear walked in.

"Ahh subject A10. Welcome to the land of the living." Janson's voice was smooth and oily.

Jeff stood up and whirled around. His face a mixture of confusion and anger.

"What the actual shuck?"

"If you would please follow these gentle men they will escort you to where you need to be."

"No. I'm not leaving Evelyn."

"That is unfortunate. I don't want to resort of force, A10. And A-X is needed here for a little while longer I'm afraid." Janson replied, his voice was still sleazy, but his eyes flashed dangerously.

"Jeff..." Evelyn said weakly. He turned and knelt down beside her. "Just go with him, please don't make it harder!" Her body sagged in defeat, her eyes begging him, tears filled her eyes.

Jeff reached out and cupped her face. Evelyn held onto his hand. He looked to confused and worried and angry.

"I'll be okay." She whispered.

"A10. We're waiting."

Jeff slowly stood up and followed the guards. He looked back at Evelyn before leaving. She had placed her head in her hands and was crying.

Janson looked down at Evelyn.

"We have two more for you."

Evelyn picked her head up and glared at him. He spun on his heel and left with a snap of the door.

It was quiet in the room. Evelyn's knot of panic and anxiety grew in her chest. The door opened again and a man was shoved in. Followed by two guards, he was forced to his knees and a chain was wrapped around each wrist and he was chained to the wall, each arm out stretched, making it hard to move. The guards left without a word or looking at her. Evelyn stayed crumpled on the ground. Dread filling her.

"This man..." Janson's voice crackled through the intercom, "kill him."

"What?" Evelyn gasped, scrambling to her feet and spinning towards the two way mirror.

"Kill him."

"I...I can't!"

Screams of her loved ones rang out through the room. Evelyn sunk to her knees her hands over her ears.

"Make it stop! Please! Please stop!" She pleases weakly.

"Then obat my order A-x. He was the man who killed your mother in cold blood. He was the man who took you away."

"On your orders!" The man screamed, he had fear and panic in his eyes. He struggled against the chains, which didn't do much, his arms were pulled tight.

"Subject X. It's him or your friends."

"Me! Take me instead! Please! I can't take another life!"

Terrible screams filled the room. They were louder and longer. Janson didn't stop them this time. Evelyn pulled herself up tears streaming down her face she stumbled over to stand in front of the man chained to the wall. He sneared at her.

With her heart already shattered, and with her soul empty and black, hatred for WICKED bubbled up inside her. White hot rage filled her empty soul. It was WICKED and Janson chained to the wall.

"I was following orders."

"...you still killed her. I could have had a mother. Instead I lived in solitary confinement and then in a damn prison!"

"To find a cure!"

"There is no damn cure! This place is full of psychopaths!" She screamed, "you kill children and sit and watch!'

The white hot anger fuiled her, it consumed her. It was like her hands acted without her brain knowing. She felt the icy cold bite of her powers, starting in her fingertips the icy blue white frostbite slowly worked itself up into her fingers and hands up her arms to her chest, where her heart used to be. Now it was frozen over.

Her hands wrapped around the man's neck. His head snapped up in a silent scream. His eyes were wide in panic and terror. The room filled with frost, the temperature dropped, her breath was visible. The green of her eyes also glazed over with icy white.

The man was pale, his blue veins stood out, his eyes buldged, his lungs restricted and his heart stopped. He slumped, the only thing holding him up was the chains around his wrists.

Evelyn kept holding on, all her anger and sadness, all her fear came crashing over her in wild waves. She was sobbing, but the tears were freezing. She didn't hear the door open and guards rush in, she didn't feel the hands grab her. She did however register another surge of her power. Her arms shot sharp freezing Stan's of pain through her.

She twisted toward the guards who grabbed her. They had already fallen to their knees. Evelyn twisted her arms out of their weak grasps, and slammed a hand on each of their chests. Their hearts stopped instantly. Covered in white icy frostbite.

"Evelyn!"

She was breathing heavily, still fully consumed by her raw pain. She was screaming and crying. Everything was freezing. The screen was cracking with the chill.

"Evy?"

The voice made her faulter.

"Evy, Love!"

Evelyn whipped around. Trying to find him.

"Love! It's all right, Eve. It's okay."

She was frozen in her spot, panting hard, she began to shake uncontrollably. She sunk to her knees, she wrapped her arms around herself. She crumpled forward pressing her forehead to her knees. She sobbed.

"I Love you Lee. Fully and completely!"

"... newt..." She whispered between sobbs.

Her powers slowly died away, the air warmed up. The sharp stabbing pain in her arms died away, the cold frost bite on her arms and hands warmed, leaving her coated in sweat and shivering.

The door to the room opened and Janson strode in. He crouched down in front of the man chained to the wall, he lifted his head, inspecting him. He just hummed and stood up, coming the guards.

"Very interesting..." He muttered to himself. He stood up and turned to look at the girl sobbing and shaking at his feet.

"My theory was correct."

Evelyn picked up her tear stained face.

"He doesn't have to be here to break through your powers."

"What?" She hiccuped.

"As I said before. Subject A5-"

"His name in Newt!"

"A5's proximity doesn't nessesarily mean anything." He continued as if she hadn't interrupted. "His physical touch helped you in the Maze; increase your power. Though we had that chip suppressing your power...Now however...it was just recordings of him from the Maze that broke you out. It's very interesting."

Evelyn didn't even know what to say. She knew it was because she loved him, and he loved her. True love was something that could do unbelievable things, it was a power in its own right. But she figured WICKED and Janson wouldn't understand.

"Gather yourself. Last one. And I will reunite you with Group A."

That peeked Evelyn's attention. She looked up at him.

"I...I get to go back?"

"Of course. We still have trial two."

Janson left with a spin of his heel, leaving Evelyn alone in the room, with the blood covered gurney from Chuck and Jeff. And three dead bodies. She stayed where she was, arms wrapped around herself, shivering.

The door opened again and she heard a wild scream. Evelyn cried out and scrambled backwards. Four more gaurds appeared dragging a past gone crank. The guards chained the crank to another wall just like the WICKED guard.

"Let's see what you can do with this one." Janson's voice crackled.

Evelyn looked at the crank terrified. Long stringy hair, chunks of hair missing leaving bloody patches. The crank had a missing bloody eye socket, half it's teeth missing, leaving a bloody mess of a mouth, it had its tongue hanging out it was almost bloody and swollen, like it chewed on it. The crank had open ozzing sours all over its body, a few missing fingers, leaving bloody stumps.

"This is your fait Evelyn. If you don't help find a cure."

Evelyn was terrified. She would never get to this point. A wild snarling animal, forgetting everyone she loved, loosing all her humanity...no, she wouldn't get to this point. She would end her own life if she got to the point she became violent. She knew there was no cure. These people were delusional and psychotic.

Wiping her tears she sat up straight. She had no idea if she could help. She hesitated scared to get close to a past gone crank.

"No need to be scared. Your already infected." Janson's voice said.

Slowly getting to her feet she cautiously walked over. The crank lashed out, trying to bite her. She jumped back, her heart pounding. Evelyn inches closer, but to the side of it, instead of directly in front of its face and nashing bloody black goo covered teeth.

Evelyn reached out, and placed her shaking hands on its forearm. The crank started to wiggle and twist, screaming and yelling. Evelyn felt it's pain and confusion. She could feel the creepy crawling feeling, it made her skin feel like bugs were crawling over her. Her mind started to feel itchy and whisps of an indistinguishable voice.

"STOP!" she screamed at the voices. It was just like when she had to help Alby and Gally.

Her hands were already warm. The voices quieted, but never went away. Evelyn did everything she could, harnessing what she could and forced it into the crank. She felt her energy depletion. Her vision became fuzzy and her lungs felt heavy, making breathing harder. Sweat covered her body.

One last surge she sent it through the crank. Evelyn collapsed to the floor at the cranks feet. Before her world went black she saw a midle aged woman looking back at her. Her eye socket was still empty but it wasn't bloody and a mess. Her hair was full and thick, all the bloody sores were gone, leaving her with clear soft skin. The bloody stumps on her hand hand heald. Now the crank just had stumps. She looked healthy again, but Evelyn saw her eyes were black pits and her veins were still very dark. She didn't cure the Flair...she just made a tame docile clean crank.

There was no saving humanity. Evelyn's world went black.
