Chapter 21: Haunted Tomb

Sonya sprayed water all over the place. Chocking and coughing she wiped her mouth and looked up at Evelyn and then to Teresa. Who nodded with a smile.

"What?" She raised a hand to her forehead.

"Thank WICKED for the memory loss" Evelyn said bitterly.

"Wholly bloody hell!" She whispered to her self.

"Sorry." Evelyn muttered, looking down.

"No no...it's alright. It actually doesn't feel that buggen' strange. Like...I always knew that."

Evelyn smiled, "well you're a copy and past of him. Except your hair is blonder, his is a bit more red. But the same mannerisms and cadence in your voice."

"Sounds like you two were.. are?...close."

"Those two are shucken soul mates. So Sonya, meet your sister in law." Teresa grined.

Sonya's eyes lit up. But then slipped off and her eyes slid down and landed on Evelyn's infected arm. She hadn't wrapped it back up yet.

"No. I won't make it to the Safehaven." She said so quietly they almost missed it. "Maybe if he knows about you, it'll fill the void he still feels."

Long after the others went to bed Evelyn stayed up. She had pulled out her journal and wrote a page or two. Leaning her head on the wall beside her she started to sketch a picture of Newt, standing up in the sand hill, his backpack on, his hand up to shield his eyes from the sand and sun.

"Wow. Eve, that's amazing!"

Evelyn jumped. Sonya had somehow managed to come sit beside her without her noticing.

"Is that him? Is that Newt?" She asked, leaning closer.

Evelyn nodded. She pulled out the other leather bound journal she took with her from the Glade. She handed it to Sonya without a word. Sonya took it and opened it, her eyes going wide. Evelyn and Sonya had slowly scootched closer without realizing it the longer they looked at the pictures. Sonya asked all kinds of questions about each picture, each boy, her three years with boys. Sonya shared some of her stories. They had almost parallel stories. The longer Evelyn talked, the more she relaxed and a smile formed on her face. A few giggles even escaped with a few of the stories.

The two had fallen asleep, the notebook on Evelyn's lap. Sonya's head on Evelyn's shoulder and Evelyn's head resting on top of hers. Sonya still had Evelyn's hand loosely held in her hand. Evelyn had added a sister to her family if brothers.

Captain Jaz shook them awake. The two girls sat up groaning. Evelyn's back was stiff and sore. Her neck had a huge kink in it. But she felt rested. Sonya had soothed her aching heart.

"Eat quick. We're gonna head for the surface as soon as we can." She informed them. Evelyn nodded.

"Good. It's been way to bloody long without seeing the damn sun."

Evelyn had packed her journals back into her bag. Sonya had helped clean and rewrapped her infected arm last night, but Evelyn was still terrified to touch others. Teresa and Sonya seemed to be the only ones who weren't scared of her. The other girls kept their distance. Harriet was respectful and kind she was very much like Alby; not the touchy feely person, even with the girls in the group. Sonya was the one pulling girls up, handing out hugs, just like her brother.

"Captain Jaz? Are these extras?" Evelyn asked, holding a pair of gloves.

"Yeah, have at 'er."

Evelyn pulled the leather gloves over hands, and threw her bag over her shoulder. She grabbed her hatchet. She spun it a few times, making sure the gloves didn't make the handle slip. Satisfied she slid it through the loop if her bag on her back. She turned and faced Captain Jaz.

She glanced at them and then turned to Group B. All the girls stood in a tight group, their bags stuffed full of food, water, weapons and other supplies. All looked like they had steeled themselves and stone cold faces. They were ready.

"Okay. We head straight for the nearest exit. It's about a two hour jog. The sooner we're out the better."

The girls all nodded grimly. A few readjusted their bags. Captain Jaz nodded. She looked around.

"Teresa, you're up front with me. Harriet, middle of the pack, keep an eye on Kennedy. Sonya and Eve, bring up the rear." She commanded.

"I'm not a child! I'm like 12!" Kennedy pouted.

"That's the buggen' definition of a child!" Sonya rolled her eyes.

Evelyn surpressed a smile. Kennedy was exactly like Chuck. The other girls nodded. Captain Jaz slowly opened the door, and peeked out. She flicked a flashlight on, the rest of the girls doing the same and followed behind the Captain.

They set out down the dark hall. The sound of their feet slapping the stone and their breathing echoed off the wall. It was definitely easier to get through the halls unnoticed with just Tessa, but maybe strength in numbers. Captain Jaz kept a steady pace, despite the backpack and her gun and all the other equipment she had strapped to herself.

They came to their first intersection and Captain Jaz slowed down, and stopped, she peeked around the corner. She waved them on, taking the left turn. This is how she kept them going, every intersection she would stop and listen for a second, make sure it was all good and keep going. The first hour was uneventful. A few of the girls were huffing and puffing, clearly they weren't runners in the maze.

They stopped for a quick water break.

"So you were a runner in the maze?" Evelyn asked quietly.

"Second in command and yeah, Runner, Keeper actually."

Evelyn grinned, and chuckled. "Your brother was second in command too. He was also a runner...until his... accident."

Sonya frowned, and looked at her hard for a moment. "It wasn't an accident." It was a statement, it was like she could read her mind. "Don't bloody lie to me, I can tell when your lying, Love."

"Shuck sakes woman! You are your shucken brother!"

Sonya raised an eyebrow in questioning.

"He says the exact same shucken thing! Jeeze it's kinda creepy!" She over exaggerated a shiver.

The girls chuckled quietly. Evelyn had rested her head on the wall behind her. She shook her head, and opened her mouth to respond and then sat up straight. All her senses on high alert. She was instaly warm, and her hands tingled in a cold prickle. Sonya opened her mouth to say something.

"Shh." She waved her hand to quiet her. Evelyn quickly got to her feet, pulling her gloves off and pulled her hatchet out. Sonya was on her feet, her bow in hand.

"What did you see?"

Captain Jaz was beside them in a instant.

"I swear there was movement in the dark shadows " Evelyn whispered.

"Dammit." Captain Jaz turned and the rest of the girls were on their feet, weapons out.

"Have you ever fought a crank?" Evelyn asked.

Sonya shook her head.

"Ever seen one?"

Again Sonya shook her head. Evelyn cursed.

"Okay, Captain, you lead the group. Tessa and I will bring up the rear. We've had many encounters." Evelyn said. The Captain didn't argue and went to the front, and Tessa came pushing through the girls.

"Come on. We move. Now!"

The girls all turned and ran. Teresa right beside Evelyn. Sonya right infront of her. Evelyn cursed again. They were so loud. The Cranks could easily follow them. And they seemed to do just that.

Slowly the rythmic sound of the girls feet were mixed with the uneven ones of cranks. And the slow cackles of manic laughter drifted through the air. The next intersection the group had to slow down to peek around the corner.

Evelyn glanced behind her and swore. Out of the gloom came the lurching form of a Crank. She had long stringy dirty, most of it was missing, like she had ripped it out. She had both her eyes still, but her mouth was a bloody gummy mess. All her teeth were missing. The blood and black phlegm dropped down her chin. Both her arms were shaking like she had tremors in them. She stood slightly hunched over. The smile she gave them such a wild manic twisted smile it made a few of the girls behind her gasp.

"Visitors! We have visitors dear! Visitors visitors visitors visitors!" She let out a wild wet cackling laugh which turned into a cough.

Slowly out of dark gloom and thin beams of light more cranks materialized. All of them coughing or checking. A few talking in a repetitive sequences. Evelyn took a step forward, swinging her hatchet beside her. Her hands already frosting.

"Visitors Dear! Time for tea!"

"Nope. We're not staying." Evelyn called.

"Not staying? Not staying? Not staying dear?"

"Nope. We're on our way out."

"Unacceptable!"

The woman crank screamed and before the group of girls could do anything, the Crank sprang forward. Evelyn was ready. She swung her hatchet. It got the crank in the chest. Sending her into the wall if the hall with a wild spray of blood. The rest of the cranks screamed and surged forwards like a wild title wave of crazy.

Teresa ran forward with a wild cry if battle. Evelyn pulled her hatchet out of the Crank's chest and spun towards the next crank that came at her. She dunked under the out stretched arms. Slamming her elbow up into the cranks chin. She made it stumble backwards. It backed enough for Evelyn to spin on her heel and slam her hand on the cranks chest.

Her hands had frosted over a while ago, she was almost used to the cold tingles now. The anger rose to the surface. These cranks were trying to hurt these girls. These girls had enough hurt and trauma done to them by WICKED, they didn't need anymore klunk from these cranks now too. With a scream she dropped the crank, his heart not beating anymore. Teresa had taken down one crank, but two more were trying to converge on her.

"NO!" Evelyn screamed, "TESSA!"

Evelyn jumped fory, with no care of her own safety, she swung the hatchet into the back of one cranks neck. Almost taking its head off. She lost her grip on the handle and now just had her hands. The other crank jumped on Evelyns back, it sunk its teeth into her shoulder. With a scream of pain Evelyn dropped to her knees. The crank was ripped off her. Sonya had lunged at it, knocking it off.

"MOVE!" Evelyn screamed.

Sonya scrambled backwards, Evelyn leaped onto the Crank, who was screaming, Evelyn screamed right back. She wrapped her hands around the cranks neck, and held in tight. She felt the freezing power, the sharp shooting pain flowing through her veins as she sucked the life out of the Crank. This one seemed to be a Fully gone crank. It's eyes were solid black, the blood and black gooy phlegm sprayed form it's mouth. The harder she held on the more the crank wiggled and squirmed under her. It clawed at her hands. It's swollen purple tounge flopped out if it's mouth and it's eyes buldged.

The crank gave a few more febke flops and then it was dead. Evelyn pushed off and scrambled to her feet, looking for the next one. Sonya was rolling on the floor with another crank. She was doing her best at fending it off. Teresa was in the middle of stabbing a crank. Evelyn grabbed hold of the crank and threw her backwards. It screamed and tried to snap at her. As the crank fkaied and fell backwards it's fist landed. Evelyn's head whipped to the side, pain exploded through her face. She shook her head quickly and as the crank came screaming and running back towards them, Evelyn steped in front of Sonya and slammed both her hands into the cranks chest with a burst of her powers, the crank flew backwards, slamming into the wall, it's skin was blue and frost biten.

Teresa had disposed the last crank. The girls were huffing and puffing, but they made eye contact and nodded at each other with a small grin. Evelyn turned around.

"Sonya? You okay?"

"Wholly shuck your a total badass!" She was looking at Evelyn with wide eyes.

"I do what I have to, to keep my family safe." Evelyn shrugged.

She turned back, Teresa picked up the hatchet and tossed it to Evelyn. The two girls from Maze A turned to the rest of the girls who stood staring wide eyed at them. A mix of awe and fear and wonder.

"Well, alright I believe you know...that was freaking...I don't even know...." The girl from last night said.

"Well I'm glad me killing other living things made you believe me." Evelyn rolled her eyes.

"Come on. We need to keep going." Captain Jaz nodded.

Evelyn stopped, frowning, her eyes slid past the Captain. She pointed her hatchet at the body's behind her.

"I didn't know there were more."

Captain Jaz shrugged, "Harriet, Amy and I handled it."

Evelyn looked around and spotted Harriet, she looked fine, a blood splatter on her shirt, but she was fine. Amy on the other hand...she had blood seeping from her abdomen.

Just as Evelyn rushed forward, she collapsed to her knees.

"NO!" A few girls cried.

Harriet caught her and layed her down, panic in her eyes.

"Captain, Harriet, Sonya, keep watch for more cranks! Tessa, come here please! I need you! Everyone else, back the shuck up and help keep watch!" Evelyn demanded.

She was already pulling the girls shirt up.

"In my bag, a first air fit. I don't know if I can harness that healing." Evelyn said as she desperately ripped the girls shirt to get at the wound. It looked like a knife would.

Captain Jaz had tossed Teresa a bigger first aid kit, which had some extra clean cloth she used to stop the bleeding. Evelyn closed her eyes and concentrated. It wasn't too deep, but it was in the abdomen, so lots of blood. She didn't sense any Flare virus, it was a a rusty knife.

Evelyn placed her hands over the wound, and closed her eyes. Trying to pull anything from within her. Her hands sparked and sputtered. Her hands were shut, her jaw was clamped so tight her head was hurting.

"Sonya! Come here! Now!" Teresa yelled.

Evelyn opened her eyes, tears pooled around her lashes, and slowly slid down her face.

"I...I can't! I need Newt! I can't!"

"You can!" Sonya drop to her knees in the other side of Amy. She reached a hand up and held the side of Evelyn's face.

"You CAN!" She said firmly, "I don't know anything about him, but what you told me last night, you love him. He loves you. And from the little bit I have seen of you you love everyone around you!"

Evelyn was staring hard at Sonya, latching onto her big brown eyes.

"You hardly known me and yet you throw yourself into the path of a Crank! You stood in front of our whole group to protect us from a mob if cranks."

Evelyn tried to believe it.

"I know, I can see it on your face, in your eyes; you don't believe in yourself. You don't think your loveable. But you are. You are kind and sweet, and caring. Believe in yourself."

She felt her heart crack. The tears slid down her face.

"Evy. Remember when Newt would stay up late with you, just reading. Evy, think if your first kiss! Think of all the times his arms were home! What about that time of you and Chuck and he called you Mom for the first time? What about that game you and Sonny played in the garden? He's huge and scary but loves kittens and unicorns!"

Through the tears Evelyn had a strangled laugh come forth. She felt a sensation in her chest, it was warm and it felt safe. She felt at home. Teresa kept talking.

"What about all those times you and Minho snuck food from Frypan? When you convinced Nick to join you? He's your big brother! Minho is Bestie!"

Evelyn realized the feeling deep in her chest was love. It was love that brought her gift forward. The hot tingling sensation burst from her chest, it travelled down her arms and into her hands, and into Amy. The bleeding slowed and then stop. What was shredded inside was knitting together and the rust that could cause infection was cleaned out.

Evelyn was shoved backwards. Her eyes fluttered, her chest was heaving, sweat dropped down her forehead and down her neck. Someone was holding her, supporting her. Her head was rolling. She blinked a few times. She tried to focus on who held her.

"Water!" Someone barked.

A water bottle was tipped and she felt the water slid down her throat. She closed her eyes for a second. Trying to gain some strength. A bit more water was poured into her mouth.

It took a few minutes for Evelyn to gain strength to open her eyes again. Her eyes focused on the person supporting her. Captain Jaz was holding her up. She looked down at her with worry and concern.

"Hey, Kid, you okay now?"

Evelyn just groaned. Trying to sit up but she had little strength.

"Amy?" Evelyn asked, her voice was thin and frail.

"Dude! I'm freaking awesome!" A voice said beside her. The red head was sitting beside her, looking like nothing had happened.

Evelyn gave her a small smile. Amy held her hand tightly.

"Thank you!" She whispered.

"I know your tired, but we need to keep going. We can rest on the surface." Captain Jaz said. Teresa and Amy helped her to her feet. She staggered sideways, her head was spinning. Sonya and Amy caught her.

"Okay! We need to move! Harriet, Teresa take up the rear. Sonya, Amy- your good?- held Evelyn. Follow me!" Caption Jaz barked an order.

The group slowly set out again, towards the exit of this haunted tomb.
