Chapter 19: The Underneath

**A little Wounded Evy Mood Board**

The crank's gruesome face twisted in a wild manic glee.

"Pretty noses pretty noses pretty noses pretty noses." The female crank repeated, squealing like a small child.

"Hi hi hi hi hi."

The one crank at the back started to weep, big huge crocodile tears, he repeated over and over again, "We found them! We found them!"

"Shut up shut up shut up shut up!" the leader yelled, this time much louder. "Stop stop stop!"

The sudden repetition of words creeped Evelyn out. Like some control over language had snapped in their brains. Evelyn shivered, the creepy crawling feeling in her brain sent a wild spasm into her arm. Teresa was frozen. Before the girls could move, the lead crank lunged at them with a wild animalistic scream.

His scared, bloody and bruised hands flew to Evelyn's neck. They wrapped around her neck and squeezed. He pulled her closer with a snarl and then slammed the back of her head into the wall. Evelyn let out a wild scream of pain. Pain exploded from the back of her head and travelled to the front of her skull. The Crank pulled her closer again, his teeth nashing inches from her, and then he slammed her head into the wall again. Evelyn had dropped her hatchet. Teresa was busy with the wild woman Crank. They were rolling around on the floor, both screaming at each other.

Evelyn grabbed onto the Cranks wrist, trying to rip his hands off her neck. She was having trouble breathing and thinking straight, her lungs needed oxygen. Her brain needed oxygen. Some feral instinct crawled from deep in her gut. She would dictate her own death, not this wild crazy psycho. Her hands where still wrapped around the Cranks wrists. He slammed her head again into the wall, and Evelyn let out a loud scream. And her hands froze over. The crank screamed. He tried to rip his hands away, but Evelyn wouldn't let go. The anger took over. She couldn't keep it shoved down anymore. The scream came from inside her and exploded out of her. She spun, taking the Crank with her, and she slammed him into the wall. It was her turn to scream. She finally let go of the Crank, only to slam her open hands onto his chest. She felt his heart instantly stop. He slid down the wall in a crumpled heap.

Evelyn spun around the woman Crank and Teresa were still rolling around on the ground. She was trying to rip Tessa's face off with her teeth. Evelyn let out a wild deep scream. And threw herself at the Crank who had pinned her friend to the ground. A deep protectiveness surged through her, she wouldn't let Teresa die down here, she was going to get back to Minho. She was going to help take care of Newt when she was gone. She screamed and wrapped her ice cold hands around the Cranks neck and held on. Teresa scrambled away, and picked up the abandoned hatchet, pulling out the long thin knife. She turned to the other two cranks.

While Evelyn's power sucked the life of the Woman Crank, Teresa jumped forwards swinging the hatchet at the one Crank. The woman collapsed, Evelyn felt her heart stop beating and the breath in her lungs was snuffed out. Evelyn shoved her off and scrambled to her feet. All she could think was one more to kill. All she saw was the wild slobbering faces, the black phlegm dripped down their chin, bloody mangled eye socket.

Evelyn rushed the last crank, her hands freezing, her eyes glazed over with frost, and her breath coming in frozen puffs. The temperatures in the room had dropped below freezing, there was frost forming on the walls.

"Eve!" Teresa screamed.

Somehow in her wild anger state she turned her head,  Teresa tossed the long knife at her. Evelyn caught it mid air, spun it around. She clenched it tight in her fist. The blade frosted over. She ducked under the wild grab and slammed the blade down into the Cranks heart. The crank stopped. It gargled and croaked. He dropped to his knees, with a wild gasp, blood oozed over her hand which was still holding onto the ice coated handle. It's wild black eyes lifted to hers, and maybe it was her imagination, but his eyes cleared for a split second and then he collapsed sidewise. He twitched a few times and then lay still. Hot red blood emptied out of the knife wound in the cranks chest. Making the frosted floor steam.

Evelyn stood over the crank breathing hard. Still feeling the uncomfortable itch in her skull, the cackling in her mind. She shook her head violently trying to ride herself of the voice.

"Shut up!" She whispered.

The voice cackled again. She couldn't understand any of the words the voice whispered, but the cackling was there.

"I said SHUT UP!" She argued with herself.

"Evy..?"

"Shut up! I said Shut up!" She clamped her hands over head holding tight to her hair and shook her head, squeezing her head.

"Evelyn!" Teresa cried.

"No! Stop! Shut up! Leave me alone!" The itch and creepy crawling feeling in her brain was so uncomfortable. She clamped her eyes closed and shook her head like she was trying to dislodge something inside her. Her hands still tingled with a cool numbness. Her infected arm was burning and shooting sharp pain.

Teresa grabbed her friends arm pulling her hands off her head. Teresa pulled her deeper into the room, away from the dead cranks, she spun her around so her back was to the room. Then pulled her into a tight hug, rubbing her back and holding the back of Evelyn's head.

"Hey...you're okay. Breath. You're okay Evy. Hey, Eve, think of Newt!" She said desperately, "Think and all the happy times with him! Remember the time just the other day you came to find me and Min? The two of you were laughing, and teasing. Remember the last time he hugged you tight and when he kissed you! Remember the beautiful bonfire in the forest he made for you back in the Glade? With all the notes from each and every Glader? Remember how you felt? Those happy memories, all the love you felt?"

Evelyn's breathing went from wild ragged breathing to short gasps. Her knees buckled and she sunk, tears slid down her cheeks. The wild anger melted to shame and fear.

"I'm sorry! I'm sorry Tessa! I'm sorry!" Evelyn cried, pulling her hands tight to her chest, trying to tuck them away, so she wouldn't touch Teresa. Teresa had sank to her knees with Evelyn. Her hands on Evelyn's arms.

"No! Tes, don't touch me! I don't want to hurt you! Please." She whimpered and cowered away into the corner.

"I'm fine. You're fine." Teresa said firmly and inched closer. Without any hesitation she grabbing Evelyn's hands and untucked them, gently prying them away from her chest and pulled her back up.

"Your too protective of the people you care about to lash out. I just saw it, you wouldn't let those cranks hurt me. Evy, your too full of love to hurt me." Teresa said it so firmly Evelyn had no choice but to trust her.

Except the voice in the back of her head let out a wet gurgling chuckle, like it was mocking her.

"Come on. Other cranks must have heard that. We gotta go."

Teresa walked over to the crank with the knife still in his chest. She used her foot to push him into his back and pulled the knife out, and wiped it in his dirty clothes. Tucking it back into her bag, she also grabbed the hatchet that was dropped. She walked back to where Evelyn was still huddled against the wall. She pressed it into Evelyn's hands. Teresa pulled her to her feet, Evelyn had just sat there, eyes wide watching but not seeing. Evelyn had spent so long taking care of others, it was Teresa's turn to take care of Evelyn. Teresa grabbed her hand pulled away from the room. She pulled her back into the hall, looking both ways, trying to figure out which way.

"We need daylight. We need out if the tunnels." Teresa said.

"Yeah...good that." Evelyn muttered.

Teresa tugged her and gently guided her friend, holding her hand until she knew Evelyn would follow. Together they ran. Their flashlights flicked on, they jogged. Turn after turn. They just kept going. Not having any idea where they were where they were going, they just had to keep moving. Taking shirt water breaks, but always moving.

"It's like the shucken maze down here!" Evelyn muttered.

"Yep."

"How do we find a way out?"

"No idea. Just keep going I guess."

They ran in silence, the steady physical exertion helped clear Evelyn's mind. The wild cackling voice had slowly gone quiet. And the wild raging anger dissolved. She just felt exhausted now. She just wanted to lay down and sleep in Newt's arms. Their thin beams of light zig zaging and flashing all over the walls and floor.

Evelyn pulled up and stopped. Breathing hard, she slowly turned around. Teresa slowed down and turned around, she jogged back over.

"What's up?"

Evelyn pressed her finger to her lips. And tilted her head, pointing with her other hand to her ear, indicating she needed to listen.

Out if the silent darkness came the unmistakable sounds of footsteps. But they were even and light. And they were definitely being followed. Again.

"Shuck hell."

"We can't catch a break!"

"Come on!"

The girls turned and took off down the hall, they both didn't want to stay and find out what was following them. They came to an intersection, Teresa glanced at Evelyn and they had a silent conversation, taking the right turn together, in sync.

Something slammed into both of them. Hands slapped over their mouths. Evelyn's eyes were wide. She instantly felt the fear and panic flair up and her hands went ice cold and numb.

Evelyn blinked a few times trying to focus on who it what had her pinned to the wall with a hand over her mouth. She focused on chocolate brown eyes. For a second her heart soured.

Newt!

She looked a little closer. And her heart sunk deep in the bit of her stomach. It wasn't Newt. The lashes were too long, and the features she could see were too feminine. The hair was too blond. Newt's had a redish cinnamon ting to his. This was a girl. Evelyn couldn't see much, she had the bottom half of her face covered in a scarf. The girl holding her was strong. Evelyn didn't struggle. She could see in her eyes there was no sign of a crank. Evelyn slowly raised her hands, indicating she had no weapon and wasn't going to fight.

The girl who had Tessa had dark skin and dreadlocks, dark eyes, and the bottom half of her face was also covered in a scarf. Both of the girls pinned Evelyn and Tessa. It was only now did she realize there was a sharp blade held to her throat.

The light footsteps and even steady breathing rounded the corner. A woman slowed down and came to stop infront of Evelyn and Teresa, being held against the wall.

"Captain Jaz?" Evelyn gasped.

The captain raised an eyebrow, "Evelyn."

"This is who we were looking for?" The dark skinned girl snaped.

"Yes. You can release them girls. They are good. Their from the other group."

Evelyn's captor slowly released her. Lowering the blade.

"Come on." Was all Captain Jaz said. She turned and ran back down the hall. The one girl with blond hair indicated with her head. Teresa and Evelyn exchanged a quick glance, shrugged and followed after the Captain.

They didn't have trouble keeping up. They jogged behind the Calton for quite a while. She didn't say anything the girls behind them didn't say anything so Teresa and Evelyn didn't say anything. No one had put their weapons away, like they were expecting trouble.

They took yet another turn and only then did Captain Jaz slow down and come to a stop infront of a door. It looked like any of the other doors. Evelyn was completely confused. She had no idea where they were or why this particular door was important. But she watched as Jaz knocked in the door a few times paused, knocked again paused and knocked.

It was a code. After a moment there was the unmistakable sounds of a lock clicking and the door cracked open. A set of bright blue eyes peeked through and then the door swung wide. Captain Jaz stepped aside and ushered the four girls into the room.

Only once the door was closed again and locked did Captain Jaz turn and smiled at Evelyn and Teresa.

"Girls."

"Captain." Evelyn nodded her head.

"You've been with Jorge?"

Both girls nodded.

"You had a chance to talk to him?"

"I did, yes. Tess didn't. But we're know."

"Yes, they gave you your memories?"

Teresa nodded.

"Then welcome to group B."
