Chapter 17: Collapsing Buildings

The crowd of Gladers all stood frozen, unsure what to do. The long haired Crank named Brenda sauntered over to Thomas. Her eyes racked up and down his body, and then flicked over to Nick and then to Sonny, Jeff and Frypan.

"Dang, you girls get to be with all these beefcakes? Dang you girls are lucky! How many ya been with?" She asked, her dark eyes flicked to Evelyn and Teresa.

Evelyn kept a neutral face, but narrowed her eyes. She knew Brenda was a fake, but she still didn't like people talking about her boys like that, or implying she would just jump from guy to guy because they were good looking.

"All right enough if the lovefest. Brenda led the way!" Jorge said, and shooed her. Brenda flounced to the front, trailing her fingers over Thomas's chest.

Evelyn rolled her eyes and followed without question. The rest of the Gladers didn't have a choice. If Evelyn went, they would too.

"You were gone for over half an hour. What happened?" Newt asked quietly.

Evelyn shook her head.

"Evy. Talk to me. He's crazy, what happened?"

"Not here." She muttered. She glanced at. "You trust me Newt? I trust him."

He raised an eyebrow at her. She gave him a small nod. He exhaled heavily through his nose. She gave his hand a gentle squeeze.

"Fine." He finally muttered back.

Brenda walked close to the wall to stay in the scant shade. The other buildings and streets around them seemed to shine with unearthly luminescence, as if they were made of some sort of magic stone. After the gloom of the inside building, the bright harsh sun hurt, she kept blinking.

Brenda moved along the walls of the structure they'd just exited until they reached what Evelyn thought must be the back. There, a set of stone steps disappeared into the pavement, reminding her of her past. She froze for a second staring at the dark stone stairs that disappeared into dark black gloom.

"Shuck shuck shuck!" She whispered, she flattened herself against the wall. Clamping her eyes closed, she held her head, pressing the heels of her hands into her eyes.

"Hey. Love. You'll be alright. I'm right beside you. You said you trusted him...so..."

"It's just like the dungeon stairs I lived in alone for years. All alone in a stone dungeon."

Newt sighed sadly. He pulled her hands away from her eyes. And kissed her nose. He gently tugged her, and they followed behind the rest of the Gladers. Jorge had waited for Newt and Evelyn to go down.

Evelyn and Newt followed the footsteps of the others. Brenda had turned a light on in a room and the rest of the Gladers all sank down, sitting against the wall. She slid down and sat on the ground, across from Tessa and Minho, beside Chuck. She knew once she was down, she wasn't going to get back up without food. Teresa handed her hatchet back with a smirk.

"You looked pretty badass earlier." Teresa said.

"You too!" Evelyn grinned, "Think MinMin was kinda turned on."

"You better believe I was." He gave Teresa a roguish smirk, and leaned over to kiss her.

Brenda passed out cans of food to the Gladers. It ended up being beans and some kind of sausage meat. It was the best thing she had eaten in so long.

"This is better than Fry's slip!" She looked up with a teasing smile.

Frypan looked up at her and gasped, holding a hand to his chest.

"Evy! How could you?! You would have died without me!"

She grinned at him, "I love you Fry!"

"Ya ya." He waved a hand, but his smile was so big, it made her feel slightly happy.

"Chuck slow down! You're gonna make yourself sick!" Evelyn scolded the boy.

"Oh please, Mom. I'd push my own mother down the stairs for some of this! If...I had a mother."

"Does that mean ya'd pushed Evy down the stairs?" Newt raised an eyebrow and leaned around her to look at him.

He looked up thoughtfully. He tapped his chin, and then shrugged. "Maybe."

"Charles! My sweet child! I did not raise you to be violent!"

"Then don't get in the way of me and ma beans, woman!"

Evelyn laughed. She actually laughed, a laugh that made her feel lighter. The other Gladers laughed as well, she noticed Jorge crack a smile, though it looked like he was trying hard not to. She gave the boy beside her a playful shove.

Brenda came back from the room with a few backpacks she tossed to Thomas, Sonny, James and Teresa, she already had one on her back. She slid down the wall adjacent to Evelyn, sitting beside Thomas, who sat beside Minho.

"Where'd you get the food? And how much is left?" Thomas asked.

"Before this area got scorched by the flares, this city had several food manufacturing plants, plus a lot of warehouses to hold the food. Sometimes I think that's why WICKED sends Cranks here. They can at least tell themselves that we won't starve while we slowly go crazy and kill each other."

Evelyn saw most of the Gladers trying to scrape the bottom of the can, licking the spoon clean.

"If there's plenty, why do you only have a few options?" Newt asked.

Brenda pointed toward the ceiling with her thumb. "We've only scoured the closest ones. Some company that specialized, not much variety." Brenda looked at Chuck, and pointed her spoon at him, "I'd kill your mother for something fresh out of a garden. A nice salad."

"Guess Mom, here doesn't have much of a chance if she's ever standing between us and a grocery store." Chuck laughed, elbowing Evelyn.

"Guess not." Evelyn chuckled.

"So is he actually your son?" Brenda asked raising an eyebrow, she looked between Newt and Evelyn, then back to Chuck.

"Nah, it was an accident. My first day I called her mom. It just stuck, nickname. Though..." He looked down into the empty can for a moment, "she's the closest thing to a mom I have."

Evelyn pulled the boy into a hug.

Brenda smiled then, though a shadow mostly hid her face. The grin still shone through. It was a real one, a small sad one when she looked at the child fighting to hold back tears in Evelyn's arms. Evelyn found herself liking this Brenda, girl. She'd just drawn blood from her best friend, but she liked her. Maybe, in a small part, because of that. She had courage and confidence, to volunteer at her young age to come into the scorch, undercover, to help get them to safety. She admired that. The Gladers were all still chuckling at Chuck's joke.

Brenda shushed everyone, holding a hand up. "Wait," she said. "Something's wrong. I think we have visitors."

Evelyn hadn't heard anything, and the other Gladers didn't seem to notice, either. But she saw Jorge look up sharply. Evelyn felt the tension immediately. Jorge was already at Brenda's side, whispering something in her ear, and was looking at Evelyn quickly. Brenda and Evelyn were just moving to stand up when a crash exploded down the hall, from the stairs they'd used to reach the stash. It was a horribly loud sound, the crumple and cracking of a structure falling apart, cement breaking, metal ripping. A cloud of dust fogged its way toward them, choking off the scant light from the food room.

Evelyn had shoved Chuck away from her, She had also grabbed Newts shirt pulling him to his feet and shoving him towards the stairs. Teresa had done the same with Minho, helping him to his feet, and giving him a shove. Evelyn heard another loud crack. She grabbed Teresa's arm pulling her away from the next crash of cement and bricks that rained down, cutting them off from the other Gladers and Jorge. Evelyn saw Thomas and Brenda running.

"Run!" she screamed, dragging Teresa away from the destruction and deeper into the underground. Teresa snapped out of her stupor and swatted at her hand, Evelyn didn't let go.

"No! We have to follow-"

Before she could finish, an entire section of the roof came crashing down onto the floor behind them. Huge blocks of cement falling on top of each other with thunderous cracks. It cut the girls off from the direction the boys had taken. Evelyn heard more fracturing of rock above them, she glanced up, and saw more cracks forming.

"Run Tes!" Evelyn screamed.

Teresa looked up, and cursed. She got a better grip on Evelyn's hand and they sprinted down the dark hall, desperately trying to get away from the falling infostructure and absolute death. Evelyn just caught a glimpse of Brenda and Thomas when the roof caved again, it crashed down right behind the girls. Teresa yanked Evelyn down a hall, just as the rubble filled in the tunnel, trapping them and making them trip. The girls tumbled and rolled down the hall. The big cloud of dust and small rubble rained down on the girls. Evelyn curled up, her head in her hands. It took a minute for the ruble and pieces to stop falling, the cloud of dust slowly settled.

Coughing, Evelyn sat up, wiping the dust from her eyes.

"Tes?" she coughed a few more times, her lungs were burning with the dust in the air. There was no answer. "Tessa?" She called louder. Blinking through the still settling sediments, she groaned and got onto her hands and knees and crawled over to the dark lump on the ground. Teresa hadn't moved. Evelyn grabbed her shoulders and rolled her over. there was a big gash on her forehand.

"Shuck."

Evelyn placed a hand on Teresa's forehead, getting her hand covered in fresh blood.

"Come on..please!"

She closed her eyes, trying to pull deep within her the healing powers, at lest enough to help stop the blood. Her mind went back to the rough needy kiss Newt and her shared. Her dark and wounded heart fluttered. A swarm of butterflies exploded in her stomach. Her hands grew tingly and warm. The way Newt had just shoved her into the wall, the way his tongue forced its way into her mouth. Her a small spurt of power exploded from her, and she forced it into her friend.

Evelyn sat back leaning on her hands, breathing hard. Teresa's eyes fluttered open, with a groan.

"Hey." Evelyn's voice was rough and scratchy.

"Evy?" She slowly pushed her self up onto her elbows and then with another groan all the way up and leaned back against the wall. "What the actual shuck happened?"

"Barkley blew the building. I think..no I KNOW the boys got out. Thomas and Brenda kept running, they missed the rough collapsing. So...were alone in the Underneath. Oh something smacked her head, still a little left over blood, sorry."

"Well shuck."

"Yep." Evelyn popped the p.

The girls sat in silence for a while. Evelyn slid her hands down so she was laying on the dirty cement floor. She watched as Tes pulled the backpack from Brenda off and open it up.

"Well, I'll give those cranks something...they were prepared." A mischievous grin on her face.

Evelyn sat up and came over beside her. Teresa started pulling out the contents. A few cans of food, granola bars, two clean bottles of water, a flashlight. Tes flicked the switch, it actually worked. a few extra batteries in a bag, some matches in another bag, rope small first aid kit and a long sharp deadly knife.

"Well, looks like were ready to take on the Underneath."

Teresa looked over at her suspiciously.

"How do you know about the Underneath?"

"Jorge." She shrugged.

"Spill. You know I have my memories."

"Jorge explained how the city works. The tunnels pretty much follow the roads over top, if we can find a way out we'll be okay...and if we don't find any Past Gonners." Evelyn shrugged. She knew Teresa knew there was more, but she didn't push it. "Though," she said bitterly, "I could scout out some real estate...find a nice cozy place down here to crank out in."

Teresa looked at her sadly. She then shook her head and shoved things into her backpack. And got to her feet. She held a hand out of Evelyn. She helped her to her feet and together the girls turned towards the gloomy dark tunnel. Teresa flicked the flashlight on, Evelyn doing the same. She also tugged her hatchet out, swinging it once in a circle beside her. Teresa held the long knife.

"Ready?" Teresa asked.

"As I'll ever be."

Together the girls forged ahead. Evelyn was glad she had someone down here with her. She couldn't imagine doing this alone. The tunnel was dark and damp, water dripped down the wall in places, making little puddles on the ground. There was cracks in the walls and dust and dirt everywhere. The silence down here was almost as bad as when her hearing stopped working last night.

"Do we have a destination?" Teresa suddenly asked. Her voice made Evelyn jump. She had whispered it, but it still echoed off the walls and it was so loud after the defining silence.

"We gotta get to a place...uh a guy called Marcus, that's where Jorge was going to take us." Evelyn answered.

"Uh huh." Teresa nodded, in the gloom and small beam of light Evelyn could see the suspicion on her face.

"So what did you and Jorge talk about? Tom was only there for ten minutes...you were there over half an hour."

Evelyn was quiet for a moment, thinking how to answer this question.

"Eve...I know what that shucken tattoo says on my neck, it says I'm gonna betray you guys. But I wont. Not willingly. You're willing to do whatever it takes to save the guys? I feel the same. Those shuckfaces gave me my memories back. I know everything from before. I know each of those boys. I grew up with them! When they brought Tom and me in...we were alone for a while. WICKED...Ratman kept the two of us separate from everyone a long time. But then we got to know them. Newt was the one who reached out first. We had secret meet ups in some closet. Minho would bring snacks. Alby found an old radio. Chuck would come sometimes. Nick, Sonny were also there. Gally started coming."

"I forgot you have your memories back."

"Yeah. I know a lot of things now..."

Evelyn raised an eyebrow, "We got time. Tell me!"

"Tom and I are siblings."

Evelyn stopped, her eyes wide.

"Wait a shucken minute!"

Teresa grinned, "I know! That ridiculous shank!"

"You guys don't look alike!"

"Half siblings. We have the same mom. My dad left when I was little, she remarried and had Tom."

Evelyn's head felt like it was spinning faster then anything Jorge had told her. But it fit. Jorge had said her and Tommy were both immune. She was lost in thought when Teresa said something that made her head snap up.

"Say that again!" She whispered.

"Alby has a sister. Newt does too."

"No shucken way! Jeeze! Why would they swipe our memories? This is so shucken crazy!"

Teresa nodded, but her face fell.

"They split them up. Girls maze and boys maze. That kid Aris? He's the me version in the girls maze. It's the same experiment, except you. And we honestly had no idea you were in the building, I only found out about you as Janson brought me to your room the day of your 16th birthday...when they put you and the first batch of guys into the maze. The guys were NOT happy when they found out about you..none of us were."

"Dude this is so much information thrown at me today. My buggen' brain is gonna explode!"

Teresa chuckled. "You've hung out with Newt too long." she bumped her shoulder. Evelyn smiled sadly.

"Wait! You said 16th birthday? So ..three years in the maze..I'm 19?"

Teresa nodded. "most of you are 19, a few are 17 & 18. Newt and I believe Nick are actually 20, if my math is right. Minho, Sonny and me are 19. Tom is 17. Jeff, Fry are 18."

"Whoa."

They pushed further into the hall. There was no turns so far, so they followed the tunnel. Teresa telling her stories from her past, telling her about Newt and the other guys.

"Tom and I eventually had enough, It was actually the same time...uh Newt jumped...we decided enough was enough. So we slowly started to take and gather information. We found someone who could help us. We gave her the information and she got the information out to a group who is fighting against WICKED, trying to find immune kids and get them to a safe place, where WICKED and Ratman wont be able to find us."

"Is the group called The Right Arm?"

Teresa nodded slowly, looking at her suspiciously.

"And the woman...Mary or Captain Jaz?"

"How the shuck...wait. Jorge."

Evelyn nodded. "Jorge."

"How come you didn't say anything when the line of cars showed up in the scorch?"

"The memories didn't come back all at once. They kind of trickled back. I would wake up with more pieces to the puzzle."

Evelyn nodded again. "Okay. So, I guess it's my turn. You need to keep all this to your self, and pretend you know nothing, play along...like that show back there with Brenda and the hatchet."

Teresa gave her a devious smile and winked.

"Shuck. You and Jorge both need awards for the best actors."

Tessa chuckled. Evelyn rolled her eyes with a small grin and shook her head at her friend. She then told Tessa everything Jorge said in the back room.
