15: Once and For All
After Jack and Katherine left the rally, it was difficult to keep people in line. People were talking over each other, and nobody could hear what anyone was trying to say. It was simply chaos. Davey tried to get everybody back on the same page, but everyone was arguing and doubting the cause. Rebecca attempted to get their attention as well, but even though she was yelling at the top of her lungs, she was ignored too. Nobody knew what to do. So, after another fifteen minutes filled with more attempts to get the rally back on track, everyone just gave up and left the theater.
Outside of the theater, Davey waited for his little brother to join him, but he was visibly disappointed in how his idea had gone. With a sigh, he kicked at a stone on the sidewalk, letting it sail into the street behind some newsies from the Bronx. His plan had failed. It had been a solid, valiant effort, but Jack's actions had made it come crashing down. What had happened to Jack, anyway? What happened to make the guy change so much in such a short time? Nothing made any sense.
Rebecca then appeared, pulling her cap off as she leaned against the wall behind him. "Penny for your thoughts," she started.
Davey turned around, then shrugged. "Well, I think we'd all appreciate a penny," he commented honestly, though he meant it in jest.
With a smile on her face, she crouched down and retrieved the penny she had snuck from her room. As she tossed it over to him, she stated, "Here. Now, tell me what you're thinking, Jacobs."
Davey caught the penny, a little surprised by her actions. He tried to offer it back, but when she shook her head at him, he flashed a smile and slipped it into his own pocket. "Thanks," he commented. "I don't know. I just, I don't get what happened with Jack. It doesn't make sense, you know?"
It was Rebecca's turn to sigh. "It's Pulitzer's fault," she explained. "Katherine and I were there when he gave him an ultimatum. Either he speaks up against the strike, or everyone goes to the Refuge. We think he was trying to protect all of you." Of course, there was also the case of the money, but Rebecca was feeling relatively optimistic and hoped that it was to protect his friends after all.
Davey looked at her with a look of surprise that soon developed into understanding. "He...of course he did. He wouldn't give up the cause that easily, not after what we talked about yesterday," he mused, a bit upset with himself for not realizing that was the case.
Rebecca gave him a quick nod. "Exactly. Katherine's trying to talk to him right now, see whether or not he caved for the money he could have gotten, or in order to protect you and the other newsies," she explained. "So, we still might just have a shot. It just means that we might have to do it without Jack. That means you might have to become the new leader if that happens, because this strike needs a leader. Are you prepared to do that?"
He hesitated for a minute, looking at her, then around at the newsies that were leaving the theater around them. "I mean, I could be. No, I will be. I can do it," he stated after a minute, standing up straighter.
She grinned up at him, glad to hear his response. "Yes, you can. I believe in you, David."
A smile formed on his lips, and he opened his mouth to speak, but before he could say a word, Les came out of the building and trudged over to his brother while he stifled a yawn. "David, I'm tired. Can we go home?" he asked him with a frown, rubbing his eyes.
Davey nodded, patting him lightly on the shoulder. "Okay, Les. Let's go home." Then, his gaze turned to Rebecca. "Hey, if you want, I could walk you home. Our house is that way," he explained, gesturing off to the left of the three of them. "If your place is in that direction, I could drop Les off and continue walking with you."
The direction he pointed in was, in fact, the same way she needed to go to get home, so Rebecca nodded and gave him a smile. "That'd be great. Thank you so much," she said gratefully, pulling her cap on over her bun again.
Davey gave her a nod and a smile in return. Then, the three of them departed from Irving Hall into the night.

Rebecca reached home safely, and after saying goodnight to Davey, she snuck around to the side of her house and climbed up the fire escape back to her room, making sure to be as quiet as she possibly could be. She didn't want her parents to catch her sneaking in, not after the problems that had ensued at Irving Hall. So, she was grateful when she finally made her way up to her room and inside without any issues. Rebecca planned on just going to bed, trying to get some rest before the next morning.
She changed out of her clothes and into her nightgown, grabbing a book off of Elizabeth's nightstand to start to read. But, before she could even open it, she heard the fire escape start to shake. "And I just changed..." she murmured, slowly making her way towards the window. However, it was just Katherine, like before. Rebecca heaved a sigh of relief and opened the window, allowing Katherine to enter. "Kath, what is it?" she whispered.
Katherine didn't enter, however. She just poked her head in, resting her arms on the windowsill as she ordered, "Get changed, then get your brother and meet me at The World building as soon as you can."
"What? Why?"
"Jack had his plan, Davey had his, and now it's my turn to enact mine. Just come, and bring Bill, okay?" Katherine gave her friend a bright smile, then disappeared as she made her way down the fire escape.
Rebecca dashed to the window and called down to her friend, "Kath! What happened? Did you talk to Jack?"
Katherine, from halfway down the ladder, looked up at her friend with a grin on her face. "I did," she started, but there was clearly something she wasn't admitting. When Rebecca's eyes lit up and she started to open her mouth to question her further, Katherine shook her head to stop her from asking anything else. "I'll tell you more later, okay? Just get your brother and hurry!" With that, she hurried off into the night.
Rebecca sighed, though a smile graced her lips, then quickly changed clothes. She pulled her hat back onto her head and her old pants back on, then slipped out of her room and over to Bill's across the hall. Lightly, she rapped on the door, accompanying her tapping with a whispered, "Bill? Are you awake?"
After about thirty seconds, the door opened, and Bill appeared at his door. Surprisingly, he was still dressed as if he was planning on going out for a meal in a few minutes, save for his jacket, shoes, and hat. "Becky? What do you need?" he whispered, not even choosing to ask any of the obvious questions he felt that he probably should be asking her.
"Grab your shoes. We need to go to The World building right now," she replied softly. Her older brother opened his mouth to protest, but she shook her head. "No time to explain, I don't have any good answers either. Katherine just showed up on my fire escape and said to come. So please, humor me." With that, she turned around and went back into her room, sliding out the window onto the fire escape. As she climbed down, she silently hoped her brother would see reason and join her.
By the time she reached the ground, she had given up. However, with a glance upward, she was glad to see her brother climbing down the fire escape behind her. When he reached her, he hopped down, adjusted his clothes, then said, "Alright. Let's get going, shall we?"
*****
They arrived at the building under the light of the large, bright moon. Outside the back door, the two of them found Jack, Katherine, Davey, Darcy, and a large group of newsies. "Kath, what's going on?" she asked her friend curiously.
Katherine just smiled. "Taking our fathers down, that's what we're doing," she replied. Her gaze then fell on Darcy and Bill. "Do you two think you can work an old printing press tonight?" Thankfully, the two boys nodded. With a grin, she took a pair of keys from her pocket and stood up straighter, since she already had the feeling that this was going to work perfectly. She quickly unlocked the door and slipped inside, while Jack, Davey, Darcy, Bill, and Rebecca followed her. "I'll get the lights, you get those windows unlocked," she told Jack as she moved down into the room where the printing press resided. Once they were in the room and all the windows were open, everyone congregated near the covered printing press and waited to hear Katherine's instructions.
"It's good to have you back again," Davey could be heard saying to Jack, giving him a pat on the back. Jack told him to shut up, but the boy just shook his head and smiled at him.
As soon as all the lights were on, Katherine went over to the others and smiled at them. With her words directed to Bill and Darcy, she laid a hand on the press. "Well, here she is, boys. Just think. While my father snores blissfully in his bed, we will be using his very own press to bring him down," she announced proudly.
Rebecca smiled. "Now it all makes sense. You're a genius, Katherine," she commented, sitting on a box and kicking her legs slightly.
"I can see why they tossed her into the cellar, but I think she'll do the job," Darcy commented after assessing the press, adjusting his glasses on his nose.
Katherine stepped forward, getting Jack's attention. "Jack, this is Darcy. He knows just about everything there is to know about printing."
Jack attempted to do a spit shake, but Darcy apparently did not find that appealing, so Jack quickly wiped his hand. Darcy shook his hand, and Jack asked, "You work for one of the papes?"
In the most nonchalant voice he had, Darcy replied, "My father owns the Trib."
This time, Rebecca got up. "Oh, and this is my older brother, Bill," she introduced, gesturing in his direction.
Katherine looked over at Bill. "You'll be typesetting the article for us. Is that alright?"
Bill nodded in response to Katherine. "I can do that." And with that, he stepped back with Darcy and started to set up the machine.
Rebecca lifted up a hand to get somebody's attention. "Okay, so how exactly is this going to work?" she asked, directing her question to Katherine and Davey, the two that seemed to know the most about whatever this meant.
Davey called Race over from the doorway, then looked over at Rebecca. "Well, as Darcy and Bill print the papes, Race'll let the fellas in, and they'll spread them to every working kid in New York. After that-"
That was where Jack jumped in. "After that, it's up to them."
Rebecca nodded in understanding. "Alright, sounds great to me. But, I have one request." When prompted for a response, she smiled. "I want the first copy of this article, so I can make a special delivery to my sister, Crutchie, and the other boys at the Refuge."
"Wait, Eliza's at the Refuge? Becky!" Bill exclaimed, completely caught off guard by her statement. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Rebecca shrugged, then explained, "You would have told Father, and that wouldn't have been good for any of us. She's okay. I've talked to her in person, so please don't worry. It's Eliza we're talking about. She'd rather be there taking care of the kids and doing something good anyway. Now just start setting up the article, will you?"
Bill opened his mouth to protest, then sighed and turned back to the press. "Alright. Let's get to work, then," he mumbled, tying an apron on over his clothing to protect it from the ink. Then, he and Darcy started to get ready, setting everything up carefully and correctly.
Then, they started to print. After the words were lined up just right, they laid down the first piece of paper and pressed the words onto it. When Darcy lifted it up afterwards, a smile formed on everyone's face. It looked fantastic.
Rebecca grinned and swiped it from her friend as soon as it was relatively dry. "Thanks, you two. I'll see you after I deliver this," she called as she went to the door.
"We still need to talk about what happened to Eliza!" Bill called to his sister as they started to print the second paper.
Rebecca chewed her lip, then shrugged. "Sorry, Bill!" she replied, slipping past Jack and Katherine, who were holding hands and simply looking at each other. She stopped, looked between the two in surprise, then shook her head. "We're talking about this later, Kath," she mumbled, then side-stepped around Race and exited the building.
She sprinted down the street, holding the paper close. As she raced through the streets, Katherine's creation dried completely, and she had the chance to really read it. Every word was perfect. She simply couldn't be prouder of her friend for what she had put together. Maybe this might actually work.
The Refuge came into view and her smile grew. Quietly, she made her way into the same alley as before, and she climbed up the fire escape to where she had seen Elizabeth that first time. Lightly, she tapped on the glass again, hoping to get somebody's attention that way.
Just like before, young Patrick came to the window first. He looked definitely worse for wear, with bruises all over his arms and face. But, he still had retained his intelligence after the brutal beating he had gone through, because he just smiled and went and got Elizabeth for her.
The young woman came over, and Rebecca's heart broke. She saw the sling, the bandage, and the multitude of bruises, and her face fell entirely. She told Bill that their sister was okay, but now it certainly didn't look that way. "Eliza...what happened to you?" she whispered.
Elizabeth just smiled and shrugged. "Well," she started, "you told me about that rally, so Crutchie and I wanted to come. So, we tried to escape last night, along with Patrick, and we, well, didn't make it." She let out a soft sigh, then smiled at her sister. "Sorry we weren't able to come."
Rebecca couldn't help laughing slightly at this. "It's fine. The rally was a mess, to be honest. But, we have something else that might be able to help us win the war," she explained, lifting up the paper.
"What is that?"
Rebecca smiled and slid the paper through the cracks of the window. "This, my dear sister, is the key to our success. Well, hopefully. Katherine wrote this, and we're supposed to distribute it to every child in the city. This is the first one they printed, and I felt that you, Crutchie, and all the other kids here deserved to have the first copy."
Elizabeth gingerly took the paper from her sister, not making sudden movements due to her injuries, then began to read by the moonlight. A bright smile graced her lips as her eyes scanned the paper. "Oh, this is fantastic. There's no way that anybody will be able to say no to joining the cause, Becky."
Rebecca nodded, hoping for the exact same thing. "And then, once this is all over, we can devote our energy to getting you and Crutchie free," she said.
Elizabeth nodded. "One battle at a time, though, Becky. Win against our fathers first, then take on Snyder and his goons. I can wait a few more days, maybe weeks, if that's what it takes," she supplied.
The other girl nodded, lightly resting a hand against the glass. "We'll get you out of here, okay? I swear on my life, we'll get you out of here as soon as we can, and then get you treated for those injuries."
Her twin nodded, doing the same thing with her own hand, the one that wasn't broken. "Okay. I'll see you soon. Now, go and win."
