Ch 50: Stink
6 days of our stay in Burningshield and Olivier was down with cold. She coughed a lot and stayed in her bed the whole day and not schooling.
"Aww... she's so lucky..." Kaoru sighed just because she didn't like to take maths.
"That's not nice, Kaoru..." Reanne patted Kaoru's head. "You know how hard she's trying to stay healthy..."
"You, Kaoru, and Jin are here..." Ludwig noticed. "No one's staying with the shortie?"
Reanne confirmed with a nod. "We need to stay away or she will get worse..."
"Me too?" Jin clearly was shocked. "What did I do?"
"Not you... but you..." Reanne tried to explain. "Well it's because of us too... but it's not us..."
"Reanne, I'm sorry but I didn't understand..." Jin desperately sought an answer.
"Put that aside, if she keeps staying in this palace, she won't get better..."
"What...? Is she allergic to the kingdom?"
This time, Reanne patted Jin's head a bit powerfully with a book. If she suffered one, she would say it to us at first! What a dumbo prince!
"Do you want me to say it or do you want to hear it from Olivier?" Reanne offered a suggestion.
"I... want to hear it directly from her," Jin answered.
"Good, because I won't say anything."
Still, I bet that one sentence led his mind crazy.
Jin had to feel satisfied with Reanne's current answer as the mathematics teacher coming and so ready to teach another course. I couldn't read anyone's mind but judging from Jin's reaction, it would be safe for me to think that Jin was actually looking for a solution, the better one without ejecting Olivier from the palace.
The class was quiet and conducive. the teacher was so clearly looking for anyone's fault but he found nothing. Elise, on the other hand, was coming back stronger than the last mathematics class it was active and unbeatable totally mesmerizing.
As the mathematics class was almost over there were a bunch of scholars roaming around the class that was when I noticed Marcus and the gang approaching our class.
"Is this the class where a girl sleeping in the mathematics class?" Marcus by the door asked, and the whole class froze. "What an incompetent class indeed."
Judging from this small event now I noticed that all of the teachers here were holding a meeting every day just to discuss the scholars' attitudes and behavior. From one small mistake Elise did but really not did she was called as someone sleeping in the classroom.
But the point is nothing of it mattered to you, Marcus. you should just mind your own business. Elise looked super hurt and the mathematics teacher decided to end the class just because he didn't want the meddle in the problem. Seeing the teacher leave the class, Marcus and the gang laughed so hard and mocked Elise's well-being.
"How dare you call yourself a scholar if you only want to sleep in the class??" Duncan followed Marcus' mocking.
"Yeah so true! I bet she doesn't feel that lucky to be a scholar in this Kingdom!" this time Craig added.
"Now, now. That's not nice. We only play nice, okay guys?? Or we might bring a nightmare to the girl hahahahaha!!" Marcus side-eyedly smirked at the whole class.
We really couldn't fight back because Mamoru just told us Marcus was the son of the opposite side. Well, actually that explained how he behaved to us. but seeing Alice was nearly tearing and crying I really couldn't hold my emotion back I really wanted to punch the teenagers.
"go away."
Suddenly there was a limp and cracked voice from the front door. The voice wasn't really clear but we could hear that voice is owned by one of our beloved friends.
"Huh?" the trio startled. "Who..."
"I said go away..." Olivier talked after coughing. "do you want to taste another cowshit again?"
"Oh no, Marcus! That's the black-haired ghost!" Duncan shrieked. "I'll go first!!"
Marcus and Craig followed their girl member to whatever place, running from Olivier who clearly didn't want to fight. She was so lethargic and we ran to her aide, offering help.
"Are you okay standing up, Olivier?" I asked.
She nodded.
"Let me..."
Before Jin made his statement, Olivier stopped his sentence with a stop sign from her hand.
"I will stay in the Vengiel's for a few days..." She coughed again but insisted on talking. "I'll return soon..."
We had no choice but to just see her walking slowly to the Vengiel's. Speechless, we tried hard to help but as professional as she was, Reanne kept Olivier's secret so tight that she didn't even let an air out.
"I'm gonna see her after work, do you wanna tag along, Jin?" Elise offered. "I just can't bring myself to thank her even after she's standing up for me."
"I will," Jin nodded. "Or do you want me to say it for you?"
"Nah, I will do just fine," Elise smiled. "I always want someone to stand up for me, but I guess I'm way too naive to want it. And look! A weak girl standing up for me didn't care about other's social reputation..."
"Well, someone like her would probably dispelled from the palace right away..." Mamoru responded.
"Probably..." Elise agreed. "She could be dispelled anywhere with that attitude but we still stay with her anyway."
Elise was right. At first, Elise was never at fault to begin with. She didn't fall asleep and if anyone should be dispelled, it should be those trio!
"Let's... visit her together!!" Kaoru was pumped. "I will work super diligently today and then visit her!"
And just like that, we spread to our own workplaces. I attempted to dig some info from Reanne, but instead of answering or replying, she gave me a cold shoulder. She must be annoyed with my pushes. Thankfully, I noticed right ahead and apologized. I knew I should learn some boundaries and seeing Reanne didn't enjoy my presence was a plenty of experience for me and I swore I would know my border better than before.
We finished the job almost at the same time. The closest place to the Vengiel's was our Pummel's, so we just needed to wait for everyone. Once we had gathered, I led the way to the Vengiel's.
"Good day, Mrs.Vengiel..." I bowed to the beautiful lady by the cashier. "Is Olivier home?"
"Oh, good day, Luna..." Mrs. Vengiel bowed back to me. "Olivier's not looking good, is she? We're glad that we have a room... but... it's not really a bedroom."
"Where's she, Mrs. Vengiel?" Jin asked.
"The second floor, on the room at the back..." Mrs. Vengiel responded. "I really don't think it's a good idea for you guys to visit her altogether..."
"How about two people and the rest's staying outside?" Reanne took a plan. "I used to identify Olivier's sickness and a certain someone is kinda dead worried about her so we might enter her room..."
Mrs. Vengiel paused for a few seconds before answering. Clearly, I could see that she cared for Olivier so much.
"Okay, just two at a time, deal?"
We smiled and nodded. Cole, who had a brief memory of his old house, decided to lead us to the room.
"I... don't think that she stays in a room..." Cole whispered.
"What do you mean?" Reanne asked. She sounded more worried than before.
"We shouldn't have any bedrooms left... and maybe that room Olivier's staying in is not really a bedroom..."
We made a quick walk and found that Olivier was indeed lying on a futon in a room, that somewhat looked like a small egg incubator room. She was sleeping between the chicken eggs, still wearing the face mask.
... Honestly, she was adorable.
"Don't you think that she's not looking good?" Jin was almost losing his mind. "I should wake her up..."
"Jin..."
Reanne stopped Jin's movement by holding his shoulder, surely a thing that Jin didn't expect.
"What? Why are you stopping me, Reanne?" Jin looked confused.
"I...Uh, I think you shouldn't touch Olivier now..." Reanne brought a clear suggestion.
"What? She hates me?" Jin asked again.
"Well, it's not you... but it's you... and it's probably us..."
Jin didn't buy Reanne's words and asked her suggestion to wake Olivier up. In his right mind, it was the right thing to do. It was okay for him if Olivier hated him, but at least, he knew that his loved one was all good.
"Just one touch, okay?" Jin begged.
Reanne shrugged and rolled her eyes.
"I warned you, okay?" Reanne sighed as Jin nodded.
Jin approached Olivier and gave her a soft stroke on her hair. In a second, Olivier put her defense up and gained her full consciousness.
"What?!" Olivier was genuinely startled.
"It's not okay to..."
"Please don't get closer to me..." Olivier shrieked and coughed a lot. Her voice started to shake again. "And please don't touch me..."
Jin's face suddenly turned into a dark cloud. He tried to remember what he had done to Olivier that she treated him like a disgusting piece of human cow.
"Why...?" Jin desperately needed an answer.
Olivier coughed again, but something was really amiss as Reanne didn't even help her stroke her body or give her water.
"Jin... let's go..." Reanne suggested again.
"I need the answer first, Reanne..." Jin sounded so miserable. "Please tell me why, Olivier..."
Reanne dragged Jin's shoulder a bit backward, as to ask him to make a space for Olivier. This time, Jin accepted her idea while still waiting for Olivier's answer. The sick girl was still coughing a lot. She even rubbed her tears because of the pain.
"You stink..." Olivier whispered.
"Yes?" Jin approached again to hear better.
"YOU STINK!" Olivier yelled, obviously she was annoyed by Jin
"YOU, YOUR BATH, YOUR SMALL GUY, AND YOUR PALACE USE SOME KIND OF PUNGENT FLORAL THING. MY NOSE HURTS SO BAD!"
We would notice the floral scent on the first step we entered the palace or the first time we talked to Jin. But, it was all gone because our noses adapted to the scent. For Olivier, who used her nose and ears a lot to hear and smell plants and animals, only a slight pungent perfume might stab her senses. Yesterday's so close interaction with double Jins had pierced her smelling sense. She had been struggling to survive in that palace but she didn't want to hurt her friends.
Jin was speechless and soulless. Storm needed to drag him out of the room and just like that, we said goodbye to the Vengiel and went back home.
Yes, Jin was still shocked and appeared stiff like Medusa just stonegazed him.
