Ch 28: Power abuse
The only one laughing at that moment was Mawar. It was almost impossible to believe everything that Azriel had done about the stealing thing yet the police didn't seem to decline –just because Azriel didn't hesitate to justify his condition.
Fortunately, the sea was on our behalf. It went worse as the day turned to night and it was impossible to imprison Azriel or even hold a court in the mainland with such a weather –not because the ships wouldn't operate. Also since Azriel was so well-behaved, the police didn't even bother to put handcuffs on him. Like really, no burglar behaved this way before.
And who was crying now? Yes, it was Mawar again. She demanded Azriel to be punished as soon as possible but she had to contain herself because the weather wasn't in her favor.
"It's not like we can control the weather, ma'am," one of the police looked very agitated due to Mawar's continuous sulking and nagging.
Nevertheless, the night rolled in and Mawar had to be satisfied with this current situation. She went back to the eastern house to rest, maybe. I didn't know a thing and I didn't really want to know. My focus was all developed on Azriel's well-being.
"Az, are you okay?" I whispered.
Azriel nodded while enjoying his dinner. He seemed even happier than before.
"Now there's no mosquito bugging us so I'm elated to have this dinner in peace."
He didn't kid at all. I didn't even know what to do: should I be happy or not? I didn't know.
Not long after, Lance rejoined our table. He sighed longer and deeper.
"What and why?" I asked.
"Well, I tried to make Mawar understand her position but she was as hard as a rock. it's super hard."
"No surprise," I replied. "What do you expect from a princess who has everything?"
Lance genuinely showed some gray clouds on his face. It was as if it's gonna rain soon.
"It would be easier if you could state to the police that you're the genuine farmer," Ludwig came with my dinner. "And since you didn't do anything bad, there won't be something bad happened, right?"
"Yes. I'm going to tell them that you didn't steal anything, anyway..." I commented.
We looked at Azriel's face like he was some kind of almost extinct animal. Azriel, who didn't enjoy all the attention, tried to act more naturally while clearly being annoyed.
"Can you just ask the Charlonzi to help Azriel?"
Oh? That might be a good idea coming from Lance. I did want to 'abuse' my power for the greater good but I didn't know if this was the right thing to do.
"Well, I could... Maybe..." I hesitated.
"You both are Charlonzis..." Azriel disrupted. "If you ask for their help, Mawar would ask too. Not like she wouldn't ask if you asked first, though. She probably would still cry for help.
Yes, that also could happen with Mawar. She would do everything to gain something on her side, so of course, we should think slickly. We kept on thinking and thinking really hard, that we didn't notice that Kyo actually felt bad behind that stiff face.
"I'm sorry..." Kyo whispered.
"What??" Ludwig yelled. "Can you speak louder??"
Kyo brushed his face off from the crowd.
"What? Why? What do you have in mind??" I asked Kyo who heard everything that we had discussed.
"It wouldn't happen if I discussed everything with Reanne beforehand..." Kyo explained. "We know that Azriel isn't on the side to blame, but they still take Azriel in..."
Azriel shrugged.
"That's life, bud. You can't really hope that everything's going according to your plan. At least, we can communicate. That's what we need to do," Azriel being logical was so casual about his imprisonment.
"Azriel, is there anything I could do to help?" I became even more worried.
"Just wish me luck, hahahaha..." Azriel picked his nose as if nothing happened.
The silence spoke louder in that meantime. We thought of something harder that we could do but it seemed we reached a dead end.
"I don't know how it works here, but ... are the police negotiable?"
Aura's sudden question brought a new hope to our discussion. She came from her upstairs room and looked pretty refreshed –so ready to sleep.
"I know how we're on the right side, but since the wrong side uses some kind of power, then I assume that the police are negotiable," Aura concluded. "It would feel better too if we're the right one and we have the ability to speak to the upper positions."
"The Charlonzi are someone big, right?" Ludwig asked. "If only we could do something bigger than them, then we would be okay."
Aura nodded –meant that we reached another dead end. My family was so huge that the whole city respected my mother so much as the source of wealth. Thanks to that, my dad was also respected for the almost same title.
"So, what we need to do now is talk to the upper who can beat Charlonzi's power and ask for another investigation, am I right?"
We nodded at Kyo's conclusion.
"But we don't know who's able to do that..." I hesitated.
"Don't worry, I'll make up for this."
Kyo left the dinner table to his room, without offering more explanations to us. I just hoped that it would be something good and non-disastrous like the one he already did. I honestly thought that it was all Kyo's fault, yet I didn't know that it might hit him so hard that he left the dining room.
We decided to have some rest and left everything to Kyo.
The next day came at a glance. After I finished my job with the farm, I dashed to the Two Pines –to check on Azriel and Kyo and...
I saw Mawar raged.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT YOU CAN'T TAKE THIS GUY??" Mawar screamed. "HE STOLE THE HARVESTS!!"
"Ma'am..." the police tried to calm her down. "We consulted with the farmer, Luna, and she said that Azriel didn't take any harvests from her. He just kidded about stealing the harvests."
I could see that Azriel playfully rolled his eyes with his lips smirking. The victory did feel so good.
"YOU DON'T HAVE ANY PROOF THAT LUNA SAID SO!!" Mawar returned with her rage.
"I'm here!" I rushed to the Two Pines and approached them. "Yes, this man didn't steal anything from me!"
Mawar's face looked like she just swallowed a mammoth. She felt betrayed –by the one who never betrayed anyone.
"WHY YOU LITTLE..."
"Hey, I just stated the truth, okay?" I raised my hands. "I didn't gain advantages or anything from here, okay?"
And... here came Mawar's furious sulking part 2. Her sulk echoed around the village and we could see Elise and Jemi running to the Two Pines, just because they thought that some disaster happened. I raised my eyebrows jokingly to Elise and Jemi while holding my laughter. They seemed pleased to see my sign.
"Oh, what a day to be alive..." Jemi smiled.
"So, so, so... what's up, dear police?" Elise asked so casually as if nothing happened. "A harvest stealer? Whoa, I'm shocked! No."
We held our laughter, yet Storm was already bursting his laugh –made Mawar even more furious.
"YOUR ACTION IS BASED ONLY ON MERE FALSE OPINION!!!" Mawar screamed her lungs out. "I TOLD MY FAMILY TO CATCH THIS GUY!!"
Ah, Azriel was right. Even though I didn't ask for my family's help, Mawar was already one step ahead of me in abusing the power.
"Well, yes sure. We did receive a notification from Charlonzi to take this man in..." the police made a statement.
"THEN???"
"But we also had been notified by some side to take further investigation, and that's why we found out that it's not necessary to imprison this man here because he's proven unguilty."
That was when the biggest question mark appeared. We didn't even think about a power that mightier than Charlonzi in this area. Mawar screamed, yelled, shouted, and everything, yet it showed no result. The police stated that Azriel was indeed innocent.
But... who?
I took a deep glance at my friends' faces to find out the culprit behind the mysterious power. I caught Elise staring at Kyo, who seemed totally unbothered with his notebook.
