Ch 27: Arrested
The moon switched with the sun so fast that day. I wasn't sure that all of us were fully rested but I could expect that we would have a better day ahead.
I started my day earlier than before. Removing the mini-grasses on the field and checking the animals. Slowly I used to do the farm life I didn't expect that I would enjoy.
"Okay, I'm done."
I stretched my body left and right; trying to pull some tiredness out. Then, I proceeded to lock the farmhouse --which I usually didn't do because of the high safety rate in Cowie, and left the farm.
Where should I go now?
I hadn't yet familiarized the habit in this village --should I give flowers to a sick person or not? One thing that I noticed about Olivier was she enjoyed Reanne and Ludwig's soup so ... should I get one?
I contemplated while hopping on the village road.
Eh, I won't get anywhere if I don't take the first step, right? I skipped to the minimarket to buy some flowers for Olivier.
"That's nice of you," Jemi, who was watering on the front, greeted me with a morning compliment. "She seems to 'always' be sick right? That's why I guess it's unnecessary to give her flowers or some get-well-soon gifts..."
I felt a bit disappointed but I caught Jemi's idea. I sighed as I didn't know what to do.
"Take this," Jemi offered a basket of small flowers. "Tell her I said hi."
It was as if he understood me thoroughly; I couldn't contain my happiness as I received the basket.
"Thank you...." I was teary-eyed.
"Is that your habit?"
"What is what?" I asked.
"You seem to be so easily crying or tearing... something..." Jemi explained while caring for the flowers at the same time. "Is that your habit?"
I was, of course, startled. It was new to me to get that kind of comment. Was it an insult or just a genuine concern, only him and God knew.
"Well, I'm sorry if I'm that crybaby then..." I wiped the corner of my eyes. "It's just I've been through a lot so I cherish small actions."
This man before me, I thought he was humble and kind and all, but I guessed he was just another cold-hearted fellow. Maybe he was like Kyo? I didn't know for sure. I just felt that he was laughing at me.
"Okay, I'll be off to the clinic now," I rushed.
"Yes, be careful on your way," replied Jemi.
I couldn't help but get confused. What's up with the sudden comment about tears and the sudden reply to be careful? Was he just being ignorant and making some small talk to me?
That was when I realized that he was smiling while staring at my eyes.
"You have beautiful eyes, why bother to cover them with tears?"
It felt like Jemi hit my defenseless heart with an ordinary attack that I couldn't dodge. Plus, I didn't know how to react to that attack. I could feel that I moved so mischievously and awkwardly for that sincere compliment.
"I'm sorry that I cried then!" I was so embarrassed.
Jemi laughed.
"Yes, I accepted your apology," he grinned. "Now, hurry to the clinic or you will come and see Olivier's sleeping again."
I replied with a grin yet I couldn't hide my blushing face. I bet he didn't think that he wanted to tease me at all. He was just being kind and cheering me up. More than enough, I saw the road pretty favorable that way.
I was about to enter the clinic when I saw a little crowd engaged upfront. Kaoru looked pissed and Reanne was obviously irritated –she was folding her arms, so unusual. Amongst the unfamiliar crowd, I could see Kyo appear –with his stiff face.
"What's happened?" I panicked. "Is everything okay?"
Kaoru answered my question with her disturbed face.
"I'm sorry..." I quickly apologized.
"I won't give you any promise but we will try to meet you today in the Two Pines, okay?" Reanne seemed to offer an agreement.
Kyo and the crowd accepted her condition after a short discussion, then went away. Without seeing them off, Reanne came back to the clinic with Kaoru right following her footsteps.
"May I ask...?" I cautiously questioned after being seated on the couch. "I... brought flowers for Olivier. Is she okay...?"
"Awww... thank you! I'll let her know," Kaoru took the flowers with a touchy feeling. "Yes, she is okay... I meant she's not yet fine but the problem earlier wasn't about her."
"Or about her..." Reanne replied while returning to her room.
"Yes, or about her..." sighed Kaoru. "About her and you, Reanne."
"I'm not in the mood to talk," Reanne stopped the one-sided conversation.
I waited patiently until Kaoru came back from putting the flowers inside. Not so long after, she approached me with two teas for us to drink.
"I never saw them before..." I started the talk. "They are... police?"
"Neither did I..." Kaoru sighed again. "That's from the environmental hero survey and some of them are indeed police."
"It's... a good news, right?" I asked because I couldn't see why Reanne looked so agitated with the crowd.
"Yes, it is..." Kaoru facepalmed. "It's all good until Kyo didn't consider Olivier's health and condition. He didn't even ask Reanne about the meeting so we didn't prepare anything at all to meet them."
I was too stunned to respond.
"Just how in the right mind he thinks that Olivier can undergo a freaking interview with her current condition? I really couldn't comprehend that and since we need the service, we can't ask them to go back, right? Yet we can't do that because Olivier's not in her best shape."
"I agree..." I couldn't think of anything to respond except that short answer.
"Oh, no, no," Kaoru halted. "That's what we've been thinking. But it's Olivier we're talking about! Reanne knows that if Olivier's up in any second and knows this, she will come and do the interview. Which means what?"
"...Which means... she's not resting..." I answered.
"She's not resting! Which means what?" Kaoru asked again.
"...Which means... she's not going to get better soon..." I replied.
"SHE'S NOT GOING TO GET BETTER!" Kaoru suppressed her voice with her hands on her face. "That Kyo is freaking insane! Why didn't he consult us about the schedule or something so this won't happen?"
I caught the problem now. Actually, we already knew Kyo's good intention: he wanted to protect Reanne and Olivier as soon as possible, yet sadly, he didn't take health into consideration.
"So... what should we do know?" I felt so bad. "Can I help you guys with anything?"
Kaoru turned her body to Reanne's room, hoping that Reanne would respond. One minute, two minutes, no response. Reanne needed more time for herself, I supposed.
"For now, no. Thank you, Luna..." Kaoru smiled faintly. "I don't mean anything but it would be helpful for me and Reanne to not have any guests at the moment if it's okay with you."
I nodded cooperatively. There was nothing I could do so I might as well just do other things that I could do. I got up and moved to the village road, aimlessly. It was almost lunchtime, so I opted to have some wonderful meals at the Two Pines.
I knew that the day was bright and gleaming hot, yet I felt the opposite once I reached the Two Pines. I could see Mawar talking to Kyo and the officers with Lance by her side. Azriel, who just started his day, couldn't even take a bite of his brunch in peace. Meanwhile, Ludwig looked disgusted and almost had he same expression as the one Reanne had this morning.
"What happened...?" I whispered from Ludwig's back.
"Your sister's making a fuss again..." Ludwig rolled his eyes.
Ludwig's answer didn't help much. I could ask Lance but he was busy being Mawar's right hand. Kyo, on the other hand, was still looking stiff.
"Yes, Sir. You're looking at the naturalist of this island," Mawar proudly stated about herself. "You can ask anything and I'll tell you everything."
Mawar held her hand to Lance, demanding the naturalist book Lance had just written with Olivier.
The officers looked confused.
"Mr. Kyo, you said that the naturalist dwells in the clinic and is bedridden. This young lady's totally fine..." one of the officers tried to discuss.
"The naturalist..."
"The naturalist in the clinic was the incompetent naturalist, so the chief tried to bring a new naturalist, which is me," Mawar elaborated --and cut Kyo's sentence.
Ludwig was petrified. He looked like he could explode in any second. I bit my lips to hold my explosion, too. Both of us were fully aware that we couldn't make a careless move to show the problem on our island.
That was what I thought.
"What a bullshit."
We heard a loud stab coming from Azriel's table. He stabbed the table he was on with the food knife he used --totally frustrated and pissed.
"That man who stands behind her is the real naturalist under the guidance of the previous naturalist in the clinic!" Azriel shouted. "That mammal was fired because of her own lies!"
The officers looked flabbergasted by Azriel's reaction, yet they could think logically.
"You met our doctor and why do you think that our doctor couldn't accept the interview now? Yes because the real naturalist who has the information isn't even able to provide you information!"
Oh dear. I was a bit glad that Azriel represented my and Ludwig's mind right when we were about to self-destruct. One thing that I was concerned about was ... I hoped Azriel didn't really make such a scene with the knife.
"You called me a liar??" Mawar shouted back.
"You got ears, right? You COULD hear me, right??" Azriel approached. "You're a liar!"
Mawar laughed loudly in the heat of argument.
"Well, Mr. Neverlie. How about the fruits and veggies you stole yesterday?" Mawar smirked. "You acted like you're innocent but you're stealing the harvests of my field!"
... Seriously?! I couldn't believe that Mawar brought back whatever reason Azriel gave yesterday to protect my harvest as if Azriel really did that. I panicked; I tried to explain yet Azriel stopped me from trying.
"Don't tell me that you forget your own words, Mr. Stealer."
The officers, with some police within them, were shocked. Justice above all, they interrogated Azriel.
"You really stole the harvests?" asked the policeman.
"Yes," Azriel calmly replied.
Just like that, Azriel gave himself to the police because of the bad thing he didn't do.
