Ch 17: The silent attention
I didn't expect that being an ear fairy would need someone to be my ear fairy too.
I knew that Lance was attractive so it would be easy for him to mesmerize other girls. Kaoru was almost perfect; she was kind and enchanting; as if she was meant to be with Lance.
Was it jealousy? I didn't know exactly. But I could feel that deep inside, I had more rivals and I didn't like it.
I put out the ring and letter Lance gave me that I put on the drawer. It was short, but I enjoyed the moment with him --when I'm being the only one, and a little bit with Mawar.
I decided to brew myself some hot tea. This night was a bit chilly, a perfect time for a hot tea and some soup, maybe. Should I go to the Two Pines? I didn't think that I wanted to be outdoorsy now. Well, what could I do? At a time like this, I honestly missed the privilege I had at Charlonzi --the place where I shouldn't cook for myself because anyone could do the job for me.
I put on my jacket and went to the patio to enjoy my tea. Just as I opened my front door, a pile of blankets something suspicious was standing beside ... Jemi.
"Hi, good evening," he smiled.
"Oh! I'm sorry!" I panicked. "Did you wait too long? I didn't hear any bell ring!"
"We waited 5 seconds ago."
The blankets talked. I almost freaked out but I succeeded in seeing around the blankets --it was Olivier sticking herself to battle the cold.
"You could've told her that we just reached or something..." Jemi complained.
"I'm sorry..." Olivier replied. "We bought ramen... and a flower!"
I took the ramen and flower from Olivier. That was when I just realized that I had no flower pots or vases around my house. About the ramen, judging from the cup, it was almost safe for me to say that it belonged to the supermarket since it was the same product as what Olivier was eating now. I thanked them and went back to pour hot water out to my instant ramen after hearing that Olivier and Jemi didn't want to come inside despite the cold.
"It's a beautiful night," Jemi uttered.
The night was indeed beautiful. I and Olivier enjoyed our instant ramen while moon gazing. Jemi, on the other side, was content on having my served hot tea.
We watched the moon like we never saw it before.
"You didn't go on a diet, right?" Olivier's sudden question broke me up.
"Huh? No, no at all. Why with that question?"
"If you were on a diet and we gave you the ramen, I would never forgive Jemi," answered Olivier nonchalantly.
"It WAS your idea," Jemi mumbled.
"IT WAS MY IDEA!" Olivier cheered.
I giggled at the joke. Still, the ramen came at a perfect time. I almost couldn't bring myself to fill my belly on that night. It was rather shocking with the thing with Lance.
"Alright. It was delicious."
Olivier stood up, taking the ramen cup trash with her.
"Where do you want to go?" I asked. "You won't stay long?"
Olivier shook her head. "I need to sleep; I want to grow until 2 meters like Storm. Thank you for having me."
We watched as the blanket rolled down to the clinic, and smiled. We all probably knew that she was no longer able to get taller, but she kept trying to gain some height. Also, it was still a mystery for me about the place where Olivier lived now since her farm house and mountain hut were all inhabited. Was it the clinic? or the Two Pines?
"Are you okay?"
I looked at Jemi with my confused eyes.
"I'm sorry?"
"Are you okay?" Jemi repeated himself.
"What do you mean?" I tried to seek the source.
"Olivier said that you didn't seem to be yourself this morning," Jemi explained. "That's why she bought that instant ramen for you and I coincidentally tended the cashier for her."
I smiled; I made my new friends worried.
"I try to be okay," I plainly answered. "Thank you for worrying me."
I enjoyed the sudden pause from me and Jemi. I compiled the things that Lance said from Mawar, about this island being weird and dangerous, even she specialized on mentioning Olivier that she was dangerous. In fact, Olivier was the one who noticed first that I was uncanny.
"I heard that you are with Mawar," Jemi opened a conversation up.
"What is it supposed to mean?" I giggled.
"Well, you are Mawar's family," Jemi explained.
I nodded. I just bear this name and partly I didn't feel that I belonged to that family, at all. If Mama Charlonzi wore a different name, I would be happy to use her name instead.
"I'm sorry but is she always that kind of manipulative?"
Oh? That's a different approach. Somehow others would call Mawar with different or other not-so-hurtful terms, but Jemi didn't hesitate at all.
"She is," I answered. "Do you have something with her that made you think so?"
"I do actually..." Jemi sighed.
Long story short, I caught a feeling that Jemi was one of the hot-boiled tempers on this island, along with Storm, Koko, and Elise. The others were patient enough to do a counterattack. The Mawar he kept mentioning was demanding to be put at utmost priority just because she was a customer... in the midnight.
"She made me almost lose my game; you know!" Jemi answered fiercely. "After all the hard work and she complained, oh my goodness. I was so glad that Elise wasn't even present at the shop on that day."
I laughed. It was so refreshing that I heard someone who could blatantly complain about Mawar.
"I bet your life wasn't easy either with her," Jemi sympathized.
"I was adopted, so I had no choice," I replied. "After all, the helpers were all nice and my stepmother treated me even better than Mawar so I could live."
"Oh really?" Jemi responded. "How did she look like?"
I could talk endlessly about my proud stepmother. How she saw justice and humans, and how she could lead her own kingdom even if Charlonzi was doomed. Eh, Charlonzi even existed because Mama Charlonzi was already wealthy at the beginning.
"She sounds awesome," Jemi nodded.
"She actually is!" now I was getting fierce. "She was like a total angel coming from the sky."
Jemi laughed and I felt so free talking to him.
"Enough about me," I stopped the topic. "Your golden hair almost looks like Elise's. Are you related?"
"Oh, sharp eyes! She's my big sister and I do cherish her so much."
I heard everything that Jemi wanted to talk about his family and Elise. He admitted that he had a bit being a sister complex, but he did understand that it wasn't good. At least, the one thing he knew was to make Elise happy after the hardships they faced together.
"She looks like the usual material girl, right?" Jemi asked for an opinion. "She had a rough past that got her separated from me and we needed some money to continue with our life."
I kept on listening to Jemi's story.
"Well, everything is better now. So, she develops a mindset that says 'to keep the family intact', she needs to be rich and pay for everything."
Jemi then proceeded to tell me how sickening it was when Elise thought that she couldn't keep Olivier on the island because of Mawar. She almost gave everything she had just to keep Olivier. I almost couldn't believe that the sharp Elise I met at the supermarket was the same Elise. Everyone really had a different background story they faced in their lives.
Ah! That's why she asked whether I needed to be paid for my veggies!
"Hey, Jemi..." I curiously asked. "Did Mawar do something before to make Elise wary about me?"
"Oh, of course. She did that to everyone," Jemi dissed. "In Elise's case, Mawar demanded her to sell everything she gathered on the farm at a higher price and not get back to the island. You didn't even believe how upset Elise was."
I covered my face; I felt so embarrassed.
"That's why we are glad that you're different from her."
I smiled and Jemi replied my smile. I somehow could feel his pat on my head; he was truly proud of me for being different from Mawar.
"That man with you is no different than her, though."
I was surprised at Jemi's sudden topic change. I stared at his eyes, and yes, his eyes told me that he had some kind of bad feeling.
"You mean Lance?" I questioned.
"Yes, that guy," Jemi agreed. "You take care of him pretty well but he doesn't seem to return that feeling back."
Well, I couldn't tell him that Lance felt that because of my doing. He still thought that Mawar did everything for him so Lance felt indebted. I didn't know how pure his love was to Mawar, though. Still, it was not good.
"Yes, that's what it's like."
I felt a pain in my heart again. I knew that this was a jealousy.
"A hug?" offered Jemi with his arms open.
I buried myself in his hug. It was so hard to hold the jealousy while being invisible at most times. Jemi, who didn't even understand a thing, keep hugging me sincerely. That was when I saw a light popped out from my phone.
"A text?" he asked. I nodded.
"From?" he asked again. I mouthed 'Lance'.
Jemi waited until I was done reading the short text –the text that left me speechless.
"May I know what it's about?" worried Jemi, since he saw my pale face.
"Lance told me that Mawar's coming..."
