Chapter one
"Rosemary! Archer! Come here now! Watch this!" My bratty sister, Elisabeth shouted. People always say how much we look alike and all we can ever do is nod. I am fairly tall, or at least for my age (15) while she is relatively short for her age (10). Her skin was deeply tanned and mine was pale and covered in freckles. I have light brown hair with red highlights but hers is white blonde. The only thing even slightly similar on our face were our long eyelashes. However, her lashes frame bright blue eyes and mine are more blue-grey.
"Lissy!" I scream back "Archer has to go home in five minutes! Can you wait that long to show me?" I already knew what it was going to be. She is obsessed with a television show called: Lavender Fields. The same thing happens on every episode! The main character, Ivy, gets in a fight with her boyfriend, she screams at him, and they make up. Again. Somehow, this show has been going on for three seasons.
"No! Come here now! It's serious!"
Archer starts to pick up the soccer equipment we were using.
I steal a glance about him. It sounds creepy but how can I help it!? He's gorgeous! His chestnut brown curly hair sits perfectly on his head. His eyes! Oh his eyes! The most beautiful shade of greenish brown you'll ever see. And I can't forget his smile. His smiling face can honestly light up anyone's face. He is always smiling and for that I am always happy. Being with him is my favorite hobby. He is my best friend and I love him more than life. In the past three years, however, I've started to love him in a different way. I have a romantic interest in him. He won't like me though. I shouldn't get my hopes up.
"I'll race you!" Archer says to me.
"You're on." I reply.
We sprint across my yard.
We end up on my front porch gasping for air.
"Elisabeth! What do you want?" I angrily ask her.
My mood changes from frustrated to confused to concerned when I see her and my mother's scared and almost crying look as they look at the television.
On the flashing screen was the president on the news. Strange. My mother almost never watches the news. She says it's too depressing. As I walk closer I see the "breaking news" bar on the bottom of the screen.
"Ladies and gentlemen" the president solemnly says "we have received information that a meteor is coming to our planet. It will be here on Thursday at noon."
We process that information and our jaws drop.
