The Valley of the Worst Fears
Dora and Ariette walked through the halls of the castle. They lost their way several times, but they did not mind anymore because they were very happy. For the first time in so many days, Ariette saw that Dora was talking a lot. She had gained Dora's trust and she was proud of herself because of it.
The two children had to ask all around the place for directions and Ariette was quite surprised when she recollected that she had ran into the hall from the prison without asking anyone. She thought that may be Aslan had guided her. At last, after losing their way for over ten times, Ariette and Dora crossed the gates of Cair Paravel.
They walked along the path that was behind the castle. It was mid- day, but it was not hot. The sun was shining brightly but the path suddenly became much colder. They were surrounded by a thin layer of fog. Ariette was wandering how there could be fog in the mid- day, in a place where sun was shining, when she realized that Dora was missing.
Ariette could not see anything properly because her glasses were smudged. Once her eyes became adjusted to the fog, Ariette saw the figure of Dora, crouched down with her eyes shut tight and her hands pressed over her ears suspended by the fog. Dora appeared to be speaking, but Ariette could not make out what she was saying, probably because she her words were barely audible except her screaming. Ariette tried to reach out to Dora, but it was impossible, as she herself had begun to see fearful shapes in the fog.
Ariette felt like she was having her worst nightmare. All of her fears seemed to have come alive in the fog. She could not help but close her eyes, and sometimes she could not help but scream. As she sat there helplessly, she thought how Dora must be feeling, her life was much more traumatic than any other child of her age.
Just as Ariette thought this, the fog seemed to clear a bit. It was in the fog that she heard a voice speaking to her. It was a heavenly and wild voice, the voice which was most welcome to Ariette at the moment. It was Aslan's voice.
He said," Fear not, dear. You are much braver than you think yourself to be. Just have complete faith, and forget all the worries you ever had. Never fear when I am with you, and I am always with you. Go ahead and comfort your little friend." Saying so , the voice fell silent and the fog became denser.Ariette found that she was not seeing those fearful shapes anymore, and her eyes were much clearer. She thought," That's pretty easy. Believing and having faith is not difficult at all."
Ariette crawled on the ground and felt Dora's little hands very soon. Dora was screaming very much and was saying," Please stop Miss Ariette! Please don't believe them it was not me!" Dora was still scared that Ariette would disbelieve her and leave her in the middle of nowhere, just like her parents and other relatives had. Ariette pulled her closer to herself and tried to comfort her. It was a long time before Dora calmed down a bit and when she did the fog became a little clearer. The sun filtered in through the remnant of the dense fog and the two children stood up.
Ariette noticed a hut a little far away from where they were standing. She looked at Dora, who was busy wiping the tears from her face. They began to walk toward the hut. The journey was not long, and they saw the hit belonged to a family of talking squirrels.
They welcomed the two children warmly, and offered them some blankets. When they dried up, the younger squirrels began running all around the house, and Dora chased them. Ariette was relieved that Dora's mind had been diverted from the horrible incidents that took place this morning.
She sat beside an old squirrel. The squirrel looked at Ariette intently. He then said," Weren't you taken for execution, my dear?" Ariette nodded. He continued," You have come here to save Narnia, right? Then you must be knowing what threatens this pure land?" " Yes", said Ariette," it is the forces of hell. I have seen their leader, and she is a panther."
The old squirrel sighed. "Have you not entered through the Evening Moon's Alley? Then you must have true faith in Him. " They remained quiet for sometime. Ariette was feeling odd. An entire land's fate was on her shoulders. Before this, Ariette had only been a class monitor, but now maybe she had to wage a war against the forces of hell.
As Ariette sat thinking, Dora returned with her cheeks red from running. She said," Miss Ariette, you have been called by a King's man." Ariette stood up and Dora led her towards the place where the man was waiting.
