The King's Man

The King's man was standing a little far away from the  house of the squirrels' house in a small thicket. Dora led Ariette towards the man. Ariette motioned her to hide behind one of the trees in the thicket. Dora obediently hid behind one of the trees and looked ahead.

Meanwhile Ariette was only a few steps away from the man. His face was covered by a visor, but Ariette had an odd feeling that she would not be very pleased if he lifted the visor. Ariette asked politely," Sir, have you been looking for me?" The man said in a very rough and coarse voice," Yes. I have been looking for you. You are Ariette, I suppose?"

Ariette nodded in reply. " I expect you have already faced the evil prowess that threatens Narnia, since you have come to protect it?" he asked with cruelty evident in his voice, even though he was trying to hide it. " Yes" said Ariette quite taken aback. She did not expect the King's messenger to be such an odd man.

Ariette felt that her heart  was beating faster than usual and with every passing moment, she felt more and more scared of the man standing before her. She began to think if the man was even  a human, for she could feel a dark aura being emitted from him. She nervously asked him," Sir, do you have any more questions? If not then I would say that you should leave. It's quite late, and the King might be expecting you soon."

As soon as she uttered those words, the armoured warrior lifted his head. He began to open the visor. Dora, who was standing behind a thick tree, froze with fear. Even she had sensed that the man was not good and Ariette was not safe with him. But she dared not to make a move, for if she did, it would not help Ariette, but cause only more harm to both of them. She remained silent and watched on.

Slowly, the man lifted his visor to reveal a face which could belong to no human. It was pale and white, and he had sunken eyes. He breathed heavily. Ariette began to back down step by step. But before she could go very far, the man underwent a terrible transformation.

As soon as he began to transform, Ariette wanted to flee with Dora, but her legs seemed to have stopped moving. The man became exceptionally dark, and his eyes, which were once sunken into his sockets, became much alive. His nails grew terribly and he underwent such terrible changes, which both Ariette and Dora could not bear to look at.

When the ordeal was over at last, Ariette opened her eyes. She asked ," Who are you?" The man replied," I am a follower of Queen Robin, and it is under her orders that I have come here." Immediately, the man pounced on Ariette.  There was a horrible struggle between Ariette and the man, which made Dora clutch the trunk of the tree in fear. Dora watched the fight which did not last for long.

The man seemed to have superhuman strength.  At last when the fight ended, a numb Ariette dropped to the ground with a thud. The man bent down beside her, and touched her hand. Dora was  not comfortable about the fact that the man was laying his hands on Ariette. She jumped out and cried," Leave her! Don't dare to even touch her. It won't be very nice if you did." Dora's appearance was so sudden, that it startled the man. He did not even wait for a second , he turned back and fled into the forest.

Dora was surprised,  but pleased at the same time. "Did I just scare the man?" thought she. But her pleasure did not last for long. She recalled that Ariette was lying on the   ground, a few steps away from her. She rushed to her side.

Ariette was lying still, and her chest did not seem to rise as she breathed. However, one can't die in Aslan's country, so Dora was assured by that. She shook Ariette. But she did not open her eyes. This continued for a few more minutes before Dora thought," Should I call the squirrels? May be they would be able to help." But Dora withdrew her decision." I can't leave Miss Ariette alone. It is dangerous, and the man may attack her again."

Luckily for Dora, one of the squirrels was passing that way. When he saw the Dora, he asked ," Dora, why is Ariette sleeping in such an odd place?" Dora narrated the whole event in as short as she could. The squirrel listened intently and said,"  I think this might help." and he called out to his family.  They half- dragged and half- carried Ariette to their home. The old squirrel said," She fought with the Panther's ally, didn't she? These marks prove that she would have died if it had not been Aslan's country. "

It was evening till Ariette opened her eyes. Dora had been sitting next to her the whole time. The moment she woke up, Dora's heart leapt with joy. Slowly, Ariette sat up. Dora asked," Miss Ariette, how did the man look like?" Ariette replied," He looked almost like  a vampire. He had big nails, and he was very large. I didn't know that men from hell are so strong." The children laughed at the joke. The old squirrel asked," How do you feel, daughter? She has been sitting with you the whole time. She refused to eat or sleep until you woke up." From the corner of her eye, Ariette saw Dora turn slightly red. She patted her head and Dora closed her eyes at Ariette's  touch.

That night, during dinner, Ariette had to narrate the story of her fight with the man many times. One of the younger squirrels said he had heard the King had been preparing  for war with the  forces of hell. They talked of several things, including the Pevensies and the others. Ariette enjoyed the conversation, and looked at Dora who was sitting next to her. When dinner was over and  they were all alone in their bedroom, Dora whispered to Ariette," Promise me, Miss Ariette, that you shall never do something so rash ever again." " I promise, dear. And do drop the ' miss' we have known each other for long. You  are like my sister, and sisters don't call each other ' miss ' "
