Ch. 2 The Click
The rain poured hard on the night of Adventure City. People everywhere ran around with their umbrellas to their homes, not wanting to stay in the rainstorm. One of these people was a young girl in a pink raincoat and a suitcase. Inside the girl's raincoat was her pet cat. The purple feline meowed in fear as the rain came down harder.
"Don't worry, Cali. We're almost at the train station," The girl said. She ran for a few more minutes until she arrived at the Adventure City train station. She sighed in relief as she entered the station. Now out of the rain, she pulled down on her hood, revealing her long blonde hair. "Phew! Glad we're out of there," She said to herself. The station was strangely empty tonight, but the girl didn't mind. She walked around to find the tunnel her train would be at. Once found, she walked down the tunnel and to the station platform. She looked around to see if anyone else was there. There was someone there, a brown pup. A very familiar brown pup.
"Chase?" The girl said in surprise. Chase looked up and looked at the girl in shock.
"Katie?" He responded. Katie was taken aback once she heard Chase's voice. It sounded very different, much deeper than before. Even Cali had popped out to see if it was really Chase. Chase's fur was much longer than usual and he wore a very thick black vest with a bag attached to his back.
"What are you doing here? I thought you guys were moving to Adventure City later this year?" Katie asked him.
"I've been... away for a few months. Police training," Chase replied. "But what are you doing here?"
"Oh, I've been studying to be a veterinarian for a long time. I came here to do my final exam," Katie explained.
"Doesn't that take years to do? You're only seventeen," Chase said. "Then again, Ryder got a degree in Engineering and I.T when he was fourteen..."
Katie giggled. "I feel like you pups forget that Ryder and I were highly gifted students. I can't blame you though, we were out of high school before you guys were around."
Katie took a seat next to Chase. At that point, Cali had fully come out of Katie's rain jacket. The feline's scent quickly went to Chase's nose, which started his allergic reaction. He looked down and covered his nose with his paw as he let out a big sneeze. Normally this wasn't a big deal as Chase sneezed near cats all the time. But when Katie took a look at him she was horrified to see that Chase had sneezed out blood.
"Oh my goodness!" Katie exclaimed. She set Cali down in a seat away from Chase and went over to him to make sure he was ok."I'm fine. This happens a lot recently," Chase said as he wiped the blood off his nose. Though this only left a smear of blood on his muzzle.
"Hold on, let me clean that up," Katie said. She reached into her bag and pulled out a first aid kit. As she got closer, Chase could still smell Cali's scent on her, which caused him to sneeze blood on his paw once again. He sneezed again and more blood came out. Katie realized she was only making things worse by getting close to him and quickly backed away before Chase could sneeze again.
"I'm fine, Katie. I'll have Marshall check it out when we get home," Chase told her.
While that was going on, Cali's stomach began to growl. She was hungry. At that moment, a stray pigeon that had gotten inside the train station landed on the tracks. Cali snickered as she lept off her seat and crept towards the bird. She pounced toward the pigeon, but it moved away in time, causing Cali to land on the tracks with a thud. The purple feline meowed in annoyance as another meal had gotten away from her again.
Click.. Click.. Click.. Click..
Chase's ears perked up at the clicking sound. "Do you hear that?"
Katie looked at him puzzled. "Hear what?"
Chase didn't elaborate. Instead, he stood up and began walking around. He could feel that something was wrong as the clicking had become faster. Chase then noticed that someone was missing. "Where's Cali?"
Katie looked at the seat she put Cali in. She gasped when she noticed her pet kitty had disappeared. "Cali? Cali! Where are you?!"
A frightened meowed could be heard. Chase and Katie looked toward the tracks where the sound was coming from. As soon as Chase's eyes landed on Cali, the clicking noise stopped. Cali was trying to jump back onto the platform, but it was too high for her to make the jump. As if things couldn't get worse, the train's horn could be heard echoing through the tunnels. It was almost here.
Chase didn't waste any time. He jumped down onto the tracks. Chase could see the lights of the train approaching them fast. He quickly grabbed and with all his strength, jumped back onto the platform just as the train reached the station. It was inches from hitting Chase's hind legs. Katie quickly rushed over to them.
"Cali! Chase!" She exclaimed. Chase quickly let go of Cali and moved away as he went into a sneezing fit. More blood began to gush out of his nose. Katie tried to approach him, but Chase backed away.
"Chase, let me see your nose," Katie said.
"I'm fine..." Chase said.
Katie looked at him worriedly. "But-"
"I said I'm fine!" He yelled. Katie was taken aback. She had never seen Chase raise his voice at anyone. Especially to someone who was his friend. Chase looked away, quickly feeling ashamed for yelling. "I'm sorry..."
"Chase..." Katie said quietly.
"Stand clear of the doors, please." The train's intercom said. The doors to every train car opened. Only a few people walked out. Chase made his way to the very last train car while covering his bloody nose with his bloody paw, presumably to his assigned set. Katie wanted to follow him, but her assigned seat was in a different train car. She sighed sadly as she picked up Cali and made her way to her assigned train car. She decided she would check up on him tomorrow, as traveling through train cars was banned during nighttime.
With it being an overnight train, the train cars have small rooms inside. Katie entered her room and set her things and Cali down. She sat down on her bed and pulled out her phone to call Ryder, as she wanted to tell him about what happened. But she found that her phone battery was dead. She groaned in frustration as she laid down as Cali comfortably laid on top of her. Katie smiled and gently petted her, but then frowned, realizing she had forgotten to thank Chase for saving Cali's life.
Meanwhile, Chase was washing the blood off his muzzle and paw in the train's bathroom sink. He looked in the mirror to make sure the blood was gone. Once done, he dried himself off and left the bathroom. Unlike Katie, Chase wasn't in a train car with bedrooms. Instead, he was in a normal passenger car. The train had a few for people who were making shorter trips, as the train did stop at multiple stations. Chase didn't mind not having a room. He just wanted to go home.
Chase made his way to the back and sat down next to a window seat. He laid his head against the window and tried to sleep, but something lingered on his mind.
The Click.
'What was that?' He wondered. He thought back to the incident with Cali. He remembered the clicking starting seconds before he noticed Cali was in trouble. And when he did the clicking disappeared. It was as if the clicking was telling him that she was in trouble. But he wasn't sure, as it seemed like Katie nor Cali heard the clicking as he did. As the train began to move, there was one thing left on his mind before he dozed off to sleep.
'Why did it sound so familiar?'
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nighttime has fallen upon Adventure Bay. Everyone at the Lookout was fast asleep, as they had to wake up early to meet Chase. However, a certain dalmatian couldn't help but stay awake. He was worried about his best friend. Hearing what Sweetie and the Princess said about him being injured, as well as Ryder's dad saying that he was the only one to return worried him. He had always found that training program suspicious. He could remember Chase's exact words the day before he left.
"I'm not supposed to tell you this, but... I can't keep this a secret..."
"The N.P.A said that failure is not an option for us. If we fail at whatever they put us through, we'll be killed."
"Killed?" Marshall quietly and sadly spoke aloud. He couldn't imagine a scenario where his best friend would be killed. He didn't know what he would do if Chase had failed and died. Luckily, Chase was able to pass, but the thought of him dying scared him. It left him with a lot of questions too. What is the training program for? Why would they be killed for failing? How many pups other than Chase survived? It was driving him nuts.'
Maybe I should take a walk...' He thought to himself. He stood up and walked out of his pup house to take a walk. But upon leaving, he saw Skye walking out of her pup house.
"Skye?" Marshall said surprised.
Skye jumped up. She turned and saw that it was Marshall who called her. She sighed in relief, thankful it wasn't a stranger. "Oh, hey Marshall."
"Couldn't sleep either, huh?" Marshall said as he walked next to her.
Skye nodded. "I'm too worried about Chase."
"Same here," Marshall stated. "It's still hard to believe that he's been gone for so long."
"Yeah..." Skye replied. There was a short moment of awkward silence before Skye spoke up again. "Hey, Marshall?"
"Yeah?"
"Do you think Chase will be mad at us?"Marshall sighed. He turned his head to Chase's spot at the base of the Lookout. Skye as well. His pup house was nowhere in sight and hadn't been for a while.
"Maybe..." Marshall finally replied. "But he'll definitely not be happy when he sees the current state of the Paw Patrol. And when he finds out what happened to his pup house."
Skye let out a sad and quiet whimper. Marshall knew why. It was related to the reason why Chase's pup house was missing.
"Skye, he's not going to be mad at you," Marshall reassured her.
"How would you know? It was my fault," Skye said while looking down in shame.
"Trust me, you're the last person I'd expect Chase to be mad at," Marshall told her.
"He's right, you know?"
Surprised, Skye and Marshall turned to see Ryder walking up to them. It looked like he came from the Lookout garage.
"Hey, Ryder. Why are you up so late?" Marshall asked.
"Just working on some things," Ryder responded.
"What kind of things?" Skye wondered.
"It's a surprise," Ryder said with a smile. "But what Marshall said is right, Skye. Chase won't be mad at you for what happened. Besides, it was an accident. You didn't mean to do it."
"I know, but... How will he react when he sees his stuff is gone?" Skye asked.
"Chase usually only keeps a spare uniform in his pup house. I doubt he would have anything valuable inside," Marshall told her.
"I wish that was the case. But..." Ryder reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, partially burnt black box. Marshall and Skye looked at the box confused as to what it was.
"What is that?" Marshall asked.
"The only thing that wasn't fully destroyed," Ryder stated. "The voice box to Officer Bear."
Skye and Marshall both let out sad whimpers. They knew how much Chase cared about Officer Bear. He would always keep it safe. He was even going as far as never letting anyone near it. It is evident that the stuffed bear meant a lot to him.
"It's... It's gone?" Skye said in disbelief. Ryder sadly nodded.
"Maybe we could get him a new one?" Marshall suggested.
"We can't," Ryder said, to the surprise of both pups. "Officer Bear isn't a toy you can buy at stores. He was a handmade gift from an old friend."
This made Skye and Marshall even more upset and made Skye feel even more guilty. Know they knew that Officer Bear was literally irreplaceable.
"Officer Bear meant a lot more to Chase than any of you think," Ryder told. "The person who gave it to him did a lot for him when he was younger."
"Who was this person?" Marshall asked.
"We didn't know her real name, but we called her Happy. Don't ask why, but she wasn't allowed to tell anyone her real name," Ryder replied. "She was a really nice girl. She's probably the nicest person I've ever seen. We met her when Chase found her lost in the woods. At the time, she was visiting Adventure Bay while on vacation. When we visited the pool, not a single kid wanted to play with her, even if she did ask politely. So Chase decided that he would play with her so she wouldn't be alone. Since then they've been very close friends. She was also the main reason I started the Paw Patrol."
"Really? How?" Skye wondered.
"Well, a few months after meeting her she got lost in the woods again. Only this time she was met with a bear. It wasn't an adult bear, but it wasn't a baby either," Ryder explained. "Chase and I found her just in time, but really, us coming didn't amount to anything. In fact, we've only put ourselves in danger."
"So then what happened?" Marshall asked, fully invested in the story.
"Just before the bear attacked us, Chase bit its leg and started to bark at it. He told us to run while he got the bear to chase after him and away from us," Ryder explained. "We wanted to help, but at that point, there was nothing we could do. We had to run and leave him behind."
"So what happened to Chase?" Skye asked.
"Did the bear eat him?!" Marshall asked worriedly.
Ryder chuckled. "Marshall, Chase wouldn't be coming home tomorrow if he was."
"Oh... Right..." Marshall said with only a bit of embarrassment.
Ryder and Skye laughed before Ryder continued with the story. "I'm not exactly sure what happened next. Happy and I waited days for Chase to come back, but he never did. A week passed and he still hadn't come back. I started to think that the bear did eat him. But then one day, out of nowhere, Chase came back as if nothing had happened. It was bizarre."
"Did Chase ever tell you what happened?" Skye questioned.
"Honestly, I was so happy to see him again I didn't care, so I never bothered asking," Ryder told them. "But that whole incident made me realize that there was no one there to help us. No police force, no firefighters, nothing... So I came up with a plan..."
"You started the Paw Patrol?" Marshall guessed.
Ryder smiled. "Exactly. I told Mayor Goodway about my idea and she was more than happy to help us. But on the condition that we have a police pup on the team. Chase was more than happy to take that role, so I dropped him off at a training school outside of Adventure City, where he would spend the next year training to be a police pup while I worked on things over here."
"A year?! I only had to spend 5 months for fire pup training," Marshall stated.
"And I only spent 3 months to become a pilot," Skye added. "I didn't know police training was so long."
"It's actually longer than a year," Ryder said. "Chase did full K9 training, which usually takes 2-3 years. But Chase completed it in a year, so really his training wasn't that long for a K9 dog."
Marshall and Skye were amazed at how quickly Chase completed his police pup training. They knew the intensity of becoming a police pup was way higher than they could imagine. Hearing that Chase finished his training in a year was astonishing.
"So what happened to Happy? You haven't mentioned her in a bit," Marshall said.
Ryder frowned. "That's where Officer Bear comes in. While Chase was gone, Happy told me she had to go home since her vacation was over. But she didn't want to leave since she couldn't give Chase a proper goodbye. That's when she gave me Officer Bear so I could give it to Chase. At that point she knew Chase was having trouble sleeping on his own, so she made Officer Bear for him so he wouldn't feel lonely. It was the only reminder he had of her."
Skye and Marshall felt their hearts sink. They never knew how much Officer Bear meant to Chase until now. Skye especially felt awful, as it was her fault that Officer Bear was gone.
"Skye, I know you're worried about how he'll react when he comes home, a lot of us are for different reasons. But trust me when I say this, he won't be mad at you for what happened," Ryder reassured her.
"But... Officer Bear..." She replied sadly.
"He's going to be upset that Officer Bear is gone, but he'll eventually get over it. He knows that," Ryder told her. "It's getting late pups, we should get some sleep. Chase's train will be here early."
"Ok, Ryder," Both pups replied. The three of them made their way back to turn in for the night. While Skye entered her pup house, Marshall stopped right in front of his. He turned his head to Ryder, who was about to walk into the Lookout.
"Hey Ryder," Marshall spoke up. Ryder stopped and turned to Marshall.
"What's up?" Ryder asked.
"Do you think Chase is ok?"
Ryder thought long and hard about Marshall's question. "I can't say for sure. But I do know we'll be right by his side no matter what. Right?"
Marshall smiled. "You know it, Ryder."
Ryder let out a small laugh. "Goodnight, Marshall."
Marshall yawned. "Goodnight, Ryder."
Marshall entered his pup house while Ryder went into the Lookout. Sleeping inside were Liberty, Rex, and Wildcat. They slept inside due to their vehicle's inability to turn into a pup house. Ryder carefully made his way toward the elevator, not wanting to wake the others up. Once inside, he made his way up to the control room, where he slept.
Tomorrow was a big day. Chase was coming home.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After a long night on the train, the sun had finally arose. Meaning a new day was born. Katie and Cali were both awake and ready for the day. They were about to head over to the train's dining car to have a meal, but Katie wanted to check on Chase first. With it being morning time, Katie was allowed to safely travel across the train cars. She made her way to the very end of the train and saw Chase still asleep in his chair. Katie was surprised to see that Chase wasn't sleeping in a room like she was. Had she known she would've offered him to sleep in her room. But then she remembered his cat allergy. There was no chance of Chase sleeping in the same room as she and Cali. Speaking of which, Katie set the purple feline down in a chair before getting closer to Chase.
"Stay here, Cali. We don't want him sneezing any more blood," Katie told her. Normally Cali would be annoyed about being left behind, but knowing the current situation she didn't make a fuss about it.
Katie made her way over to Chase. The German Shepherd was sleeping peacefully. Katie found his sleeping position odd. Chase was sleeping sitting up and leaning against the window. It was a weird way for a pup like him to sleep. She also found it odd how late he was sleeping. She knew Chase woke up very early. But it was 9:50 a.m, which was very late for Chase.
'I guess even Chase sleeps in sometimes,' Katie thought. She slowly moved her hand to Chase's back to pet him. But the moment her hand made contact with him, Chase woke up with a jolt. Katie jumped back in surprise, not expecting Chase to wake up so quickly.
"Huh?! Who's-" Chase looked around frantically until his eyes landed on Katie. He sighed in relief. "Oh... It's just you."
"S-Sorry. I didn't mean to wake you up," Katie apologized.
"It's fine... I needed to get up anyway," Chase said as he rubbed his eyes.
"Chase... about last night," Katie began. "Are you ok?"
Chase looked away from her. "I'm fine."
Katie frowned. "Chase, those nosebleeds aren't normal. Did something happen while you were in police training?" Katie could see Chase flinch when she mentioned the police training he was in. She thought it was very strange as Chase doesn't flinch easily.
"I'd rather not talk about it," Chase said quietly. Chase looked through the window. He could see Adventure Bay beach and the Lookout Beach Tower nearby. He knew they were just a few minutes from the train station. "Looks like we're almost there."
Katie nodded with a smile. "Are you excited to see Ryder and your friends again? I'm sure they missed you a lot."
"Yeah," Chase replied. He wondered how they were doing. As second in command, it was his job to maintain everyone and make sure they were ready to perform rescues. And more recently, he would now lead the team during missions without Ryder's assistance. He couldn't remember a time when he was away from the Paw Patrol as long as he was. The last time he was away from them is when he spent a week in Barkingburg nearly a year ago. He hoped that they weren't having any trouble, but he knew Ryder would keep things in order. He continued thinking about his friends until...
CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK
Chase's ears perked up. The Click had returned. But it was much faster and louder this time. He remembered from yesterday that the Clicking noise had warned him that Cali was in danger. He began to look around for anything that could be wrong. Katie saw Chase's sudden change in behavior and became worried.
"Chase? Is something wrong?" Katie asked.
"I'm not sure..." Chase replied. Chase then turned his attention back to the beach. There, he could see something moving in the water, but the train was too far from the beach to get a good view of it. The moment he looked at the beach, the clicking started going even faster. "There's something happening at the beach."
Katie looked at him confused. "How do you know that?"
"Call it a gut feeling. But I need to get to the beach, fast!" Chase said. He stood up and began looking for a way out. The windows were sealed so they weren't an option. The only way out was through the doors. Chase ran towards one. The door was pressure sealed shut. But Chase didn't care, he began to force the doors open by pulling on the right side of the door. Katie realized what he was doing and began to panic.
"Are you crazy, Chase?! You can't jump off a fast-moving train! Let alone open a pressure-sealed door!" Katie exclaimed. But Chase immediately proved her wrong when he pulled the door all the way open. Katie was amazed at his amazing feat of strength. Chase looked around outside. The train was traveling on a mountain with a steep slope right below it. It was going to be a long slide down to get to the beach. He looked back at Katie one last time.
"Call Ryder and tell him to meet me at the beach!" Chase told her. With that said Chase jumped. The door he was holding open quickly slammed itself back shut. Katie was in shock, as well as Cali. They couldn't believe what they had just seen. But Katie quickly shook off her shock and pulled out her now-charged phone to call Ryder. But at that moment, the train had entered a tunnel, blocking Katie's phone signal. She gave a frustrated sigh and sat down.
"Great... Just my luck..."
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chase slid down the slope at a quick pace. He slid about halfway until he was stopped when the slope ended at a road that was built on the side of the mountain. Chase quickly ran across the road and slid onto the next part of the slope. After another long slide, he landed at the bottom of the mountain. Ahead now was a large grassy field before he reached the beach. He started to run as fast as he could. The Clicking he was hearing was getting louder the closer he got.
Finally, after a long run, Chase arrived at Adventure Bay Beach. And just like that, the clicking stopped. Chase dropped his bag in the sand and ran to the shallow part of the water. He could see not one, but two things quickly moving in the water. One thing was leaving a small trail, while the other left a much bigger trail. It looked like the bigger one was chasing the smaller one.
"What's going on?" He wondered. He continued watching the two trails move around the water. He then cautiously made his way closer to them. Suddenly, the small trail made a turn towards Chase and leaped towards him. Chase's eyes widened in shock when he saw the thing that was jumping toward him.
It was a Merpup.
"A Merpu- OOF!" Chase was cut off when the Merpup tackled him onto his back. It held onto him tightly as it chirped quickly in its own language, which Chase couldn't understand. Chase noticed it looked different from the other Merpups he had seen. It had pointy ears, orange and white fur, green eyes, and a gold tail with silver lines.
"Whoa! Hey there, what's going on?" Chase asked. The Merpup pointed out towards the water. Chase raised his head to see what the Merpup was pointing at. Sticking up from the water was a large grey fin that was approaching them fast. Chase's eyes widened in shock, he knew what was coming for them. Before he knew it, the large creature jumped out of the water, revealing itself to be one of the deadliest sea creatures in the world.
A Great White Shark!
