Chapter 3. Betrayal,Aloof,Strength
"So.. we got basically all the snacks if you were wondering", Fin tells to one of his friends, Phil with his hands all piled up with packets of chips, lasagna, three buckets of KFC, cotton candies...
I count on the number of snacks on both of Fin's hands, all of them excited to get out of his hands...
"Perhaps they could sun bath too!" , Clary acknowledges what I'm thinking with her dimpled cheeks flashing the sun in glee.
Wait. Did I hear her wrong?
"No, you didn't!", she reassures like its the most usual thing she has ever said, not recognizing my confused face but perhaps she thought I did not understand.
"I never knew that you could read my mind. And you never told me you could!" I try to be calm about it but it all comes out in a lace of betrayal and just like the cold ice glaciers, she understands how fast the air changes from 30 degrees to 0 degrees in a fraction of second.
A deer caught in spotlight. Was her condition. In other circumstances I would have laughed or shrugged it off but the words she said were not just usual thorn of rose pricking you but a deep crevice on thin ice.
"I'm sorry, I never meant to do that to you", her saddening voice apologizes, to make the situation's impact lesser but what has happened has happened. No one could deny that at all in a million years!
"Do others know about your so called skill?", my voice purely drips with coldness as the hot blazing wind fan my hair while I pretend to check my nails.
"I'm really really sorry for hiding you about my ability and so is others. Finn is weather controller, and Penny is a persuader" she winces as she nervously spills the beans. More like splashing you hard with hard water. The only water that could make every pore of your body to be grim, convulse in pain, grunting.
The powdery grains of the sand unlike being soft, gnashes my foot , calling me away toward the crazy hippopotamus of blue that seem to be my only solution from this- whatever this is.
So I do the most stupid, perhaps cowardly girlish act. Well, to say the least, it's absolutely relieving too.
I run toward the sea with my footfalls thudding the mushy sand, sensing all my friends gaze on my back. Yeah, now that I think about it, Clary would have mind-spoke to Fin and Penny.
I do look back in the end, of course, I can't be that unfriendly to them as they proved to me ironically how best friends are supposed to be.
As I look back, I can see Clary sitting with her hands on her head, a clear wretched state for a girl to be in. Penny, for once her face crumpled and like a lifeless puppet in Fin's arms. Wait. Did I say that right? How long they were in it?
Anyways, that's the last thing I would be concerned about!
The most hilarious thing is that I very soon accepted of their new 'powers'! So fast! Like a blink of an eye! After the betrayal, I'm not supposed to trust them right? But then again, I think I knew it in the back of my mind that these so-called abilities did exist after reading tons of supernatural, fantasy, fiction novels I guess.
But one thing, I'm very damned to be sure. I want no powers like them. I hate those stupid abilities that wrecked my boat which was already rocking violently by itself. Now all shattered in bits and pieces that can never be mended again.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Perhaps, many hours must have passed. But I still remain near the waters. Although, one might see me as a girl cosily enjoying the cool, trickling, tickling salt water, frankly speaking, it was totally the opposite. My mind or inside is right sitting on a would be- erupting volcano or a timing bomb. Who knows when it will explode?
As I sit, dully gazing the pale white foams of sprays, I notice an equally drenched, shivering paper. Weirdly though, the paper wasn't torn. I smooth the creases and soak the water and finally see something written in cobalt blue ink.
"So do not fear, for I am with you ; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." Isaiah 41:10
My mind just stays numb. Static charge build up in my veins. Eyes dilate. Mouth gawking open like the big toucan's overhanging beak. Sweat singes out of my skin happy to be freed at last.
No, I was - it was like-like a sharp sword no, the most powerful and sharpest sword that cut my heart. Stole my heart rather. Because that dull feeling, that betrayed feeling, that animosity toward my friends vanishes. Pop! That's it! Like it was never there! Even those depressed pondering were now like foreign particles. Strangers.
Now my mind sings in a reassured tone. And could anyone ever believe that I would be very much changed by these words?
How?
The only answer that I could dig up from my brain is this one single word.
God.
I quickly place the precious paper inside the dusty book which I carried into the beach and return to where my friends were staying only to see them gone.
Despite that, I still miraculously feel nothing against them except sympathy for some reason I don't understand.
So, I catch a taxi to my home, I wonder at last the secret discussion that my parents were so confidential about.
"We have to tell her or maybe we could be victims like those character- Peter and his sister in the Lost Symbol"
I think about anything that is connected to the words "lost symbol" wracking my brains until it comes to this question.
Were my parents talking about me getting those supernatural abilities?
