Chapter 49
Daniel then spontaneously combusted. Just randomly. Shian backed off, covered in small burns from his brother's explosion. "What was that?!" Kalina shrieked.
"Well, he just, well, blew up," Shian said, standing up, brushing off the dirt on his clothes.
"You can't just randomly blow up!" Kalina screamed.
"Well, maybe there was a magic build up in his body," Shian suggested, "It happens sometimes to powerful wizards."
"Fine," Kalina muttered, "Now it's just me." She pulled out her knife. "Come at me."
"No," Hayden said. He glanced at Sadie, Beatrix, and Shian. All four of them stepped forward to Kalina.
"We're not going to kill you," Sadie said.
"What? Why?!" Kalina exclaimed, "I'll just kill all of you then." She reached forward with her knife and tried to stab Beatrix, but she dodged.
"Because, we believe you have the potential to be good," Beatrix replied.
"What if I can't," Kalina said. You could hear how heavy her breathing was. She truly was absolutely insane. She had lost it.
"We know you can," Shian said, "Because you were before."
"Before?" Kalina asked. Her breathing started to come more naturally.
"Before you killed the innocent, before you devised this plan to take over Palasia. You were good," Shian said.
"Good," Kalina said slowly.
"And we believe you can be that person, not using your powers to your advantage," Hayden said.
Kalina's eyes slowly widened and softened. Her aura of power began to feel smoother and kinder. Kalina let down her hands and a wave of power rang through the woods. "Good," she said.
"Yes," the four said together.
"I'm sorry, but I can't be that. I have lived the last years of my life doing all these bad things, I can't change now. It's too late. Kill me. If I become good, I would never forgive myself for the things I've done in the past. And I can't live with that. Kill me," she said.
"We won't kill you," Sadie said, "You need to forgive your past self if you are good. That is what the good does, they forgive. That's why we are giving you this second chance."
"I don't forgive," Kalina said, "I never did. Even when I was good, and that's why I changed into the monster that I was. I couldn't forgive what Queen Charasia said when I killed my first person. Everyone knew it happened at some point. Sirens always kill one. When she said to not do that anymore, I blew up. I said it's what sirens did, but she didn't believe me. Then I killed more. More and more innocent normas. I never meant it to cascade into this, but it did. So kill me now, I will never forget what I've done." Tears started to stream down her pale face. "Kill me now."
"We won't kill you," Beatrix persisted, "We know you can forgive and forget with a little bit pushing and persistence."
"But I can't. So I must kill myself," Kalina said. Tears poured down her face. She held her knife up to her neck.
"Don't do it Kalina, you can be good," Shian said.
"No," she cried. She sliced the knife deep into her neck. She collapsed to the ground, blood pouring out if her neck. Her chest shuddered, then stopped moving. No more breaths. Her heart stopped. Blood stopped gushing.
"She's gone," Sadie whispered.
"We should bury her," Hayden said.
"Yeah," Beatrix agreed.
"Hayden, pick her up, we'll bury her at the magic tree," Shian said. Hayden picked her up and the four walked over to the golden tree. Shian dug a hole and Hayden placed her in it. Shian covered up the hole and the four held hands in a ring around her grave. Magic from the tree soared into the grave, making it more compact and neat, the magic also made her a gravestone.
"Now what?" Sadie asked.
"Now we tell Palasia that we won," Shian replied.
