CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE: Defeat
The happiness Elizabeth felt for her sister, could not be hidden from her face. She and William stayed a few steps away, joining Thomas as they watched Mary and Eli in glee over their daughter who was finally reunited with her.
Nora looked unharmed, and the smile on Thomas' face confirmed that their niece was indeed healthy. But what warmed Elizabeth's heart the most, was the smile of her sister and her brother-in-law at the sight of their daughter. They had been apart for much too long, and they deserved every bit of happiness they got.
Elizabeth took her brother's hand and squeezed it. "Where did you find her?" she whispered, not wanting to disturb Mary and Eli in their happiness.
"The abandoned building I followed Arthur to, I later returned with the police officers. He must have been living there for quite a while, for part of the building was furnished like a house."
"How did no one find out he was hiding there?" William wondered out loud.
"There is no connection to him whatsoever," Thomas said with a shrug. "He must have entered the first lone building he found and made it his house."
"Was he there?" Elizabeth dared ask.
Unfortunately, Thomas shook his head. "We did not even catch a glimpse of his shadow. There are some police officers who have stayed behind for when he returns, but so far, I have not heard anything of them yet."
"And Nora?" she asked carefully. "Did he care for her?"
Thomas turned his head away from his niece and looked at Elizabeth and William. "Surprisingly, he did. In his 'house', he had given her a room with a cradle and curtains in front of the windows. She also had no injuries or a lack of her basic needs."
"He truly cared for her," William stated, though it sounded a lot like a question. Twas a surprise to Elizabeth too, and seeing Thomas' nod, he thought the same.
Before either of them could react, a voice at the end of the hallway startled them all.
"What a beautiful reunion."
Everyone looked up to see Arthur there, watching them. His usual mean smile was on his lips, but that was not what stopped Elizabeth's heartbeat. In his hands he was holding a bundle of blankets, similar to what Mary was holding.
But when Arthur turned around to show them the face of the baby he was holding, she gasped and never breathed out. Without the ability to breathe, she watched as Lewis' face turned to her and smiled at her.
"It would seem I am without child," Arthur continued as if Elizabeth was not about to die from fright. "So I found myself another one to look after."
Just when William came to stand in front of Elizabeth and Thomas stepped forward, Eli pushed Mary to her before he walked toward Arthur. William and Thomas quickly followed, and Elizabeth did too. To the men's surprise, she pushed them aside and slapped Arthur across the cheek. He was still recovering when Elizabeth took hold of her son and snatched him from his arms.
Lewis was unaware of her panic or his family's protection over him, for he merely laughed at the touch of his mother. Quickly, Elizabeth walked away from Arthur so that he could not take her son away again. She left the rest of her revenge to her husband, her brother and her brother-in-law, who all had their own reasons for revenge.
Standing next to Mary, she watched as William was the first to beat Arthur. He did not look determined anymore. He did not look like he was ready for this fight. Rather, he looked like he felt the defeat and came to surrender.
He would not make it easy, Elizabeth knew. And she was reminded of that when Arthur's fist landed on William's almost healed wound. Her husband doubled over in pain, but before Arthur could harm him more, Thomas grabbed his arms and Eli kicked the man in his stomach. Twas Arthur's time to double over, while Thomas' knee landed in his lower belly.
The banished Brompton brother fell to his knees, making it easier for the three men around him to slap his cheek, beat his eye and kick his belly until he no longer stood up. He still moved, and he still breathed, but they stopped beating him.
They all knew that if they would hurt him until he stopped moving, they would not be better than the man himself. He deserved everything bad he was getting, but not to the amount that the Bromptons would become bad. They knew their limits. The rest of the revenge was knowing that Arthur no longer had a worthy life in prison.
Thomas took Arthur's hand and held them behind his back. He did not struggle and just let Thomas do. The strength seemed to have left Arthur, for he moaned when Thomas pulled his arms too hard. But he did not fight. He did not say anything rude.
He must have come to them with the knowledge that this was the end. Mayhap he had hoped on hurting them one more time before surrendering. For they all knew that whether he surrendered or not, he would have been caught soon.
Arthur was not stupid. When the end came, he also knew it. A part of him must still be a decent man who would rather admit he had failed than fight to the dead.
Eli ran to fetch a rope, which Thomas used to tie Arthur's hands behind his back.
A silence felt the hallway as Thomas stood up and looked at his brother, laying defeated on the ground.
Elizabeth could hear her own heart beating in her throat. She wanted to fill the silence, celebrate that Arthur was caught. But she dared not make a sound. What if it was all a dream and the sound of her voice would wake her up?
He could have taken Lewis with him and disappeared like he had before. But he had not. He had come to them and teased them, then surrendered. It almost felt too easy.
Did victory always felt like that? Like it was easy? Like everything they had gone through had been too terrifying to feel good about it being over? Were they too traumatized by everything he had done that victory did not feel pleasing enough?
She knew she should be happy with this, but she could not deny feeling like it was not over yet. Did he have something more planned?
Thomas turned around to them, then said: "we should call for the police. This man deserves a life in prison."
