Chapter Seven: Cute and Adorable
Point of View: Phoebe
"You're so lucky, Phoebe. It is so adorable." Atalanta tells me.
"He was frozen at eighteen." I sigh.
"So? He only feels that way for a mate he hasn't met yet or even exists. He's tiny, he's not thinking that way about anyone." Thalia says.
"He likes you a lot, sister." Artemis smiles. "He bonded with the both of us, but I think he honestly likes you more. I am more duty bound for him while he absolutely loves you. Not many wolves can tell their Hunt Sisters the same. Most of them are duty and little love. I know he loves me, but feels more obedient in my presence. When he speaks with you, it is completely out of love. You are lucky. And I know exactly why."
"Who was he?" I ask.
"He will tell you. All you have to do is ask." Artemis laughs. "You'll get the surprise of your life, I am sure. Make sure you are alone. He won't like telling you in front of everyone else. He doesn't mind the little things in front of others like asking for his new name, but the personal stuff is between you two and me."
"Okay." I nod.
"You get the week off to spend with him. It starts tomorrow. Aroen knows." Artemis explains.
"Oh, no pack mother?" Kyndra asks sadly.
"No, Aroen still hasn't mated." I sigh.
"Go have some free time, girls. I've got a meeting to go to. I'm sure the wolves need to see their Hunt Sisters." Artemis smiles and flashes off.
I pick up Ebony and his eyes open. The little wolf yawn alerting me. "Sorry, I didn't mean to wake you." I tap his nose.
He sneezes. "It's okay. Phoebe is nice."
I giggle.
Point of View: Ebony
I bark in joy at her laughing. "What does Phoebe want to do?"
"We are still trying to pick a nickname for you." She tells me as she walks off to sit down alone in the forest. We disagree on every name. "Ebony is cute anyway and it's short."
"We decided!" I bounce up and down.
"You're very tiny." She giggles as she holds me.
"Hey!" I whine. "I was just born. Give me a break. I'm not big yet. But I'll grow big. That way I can protect Phoebe. Phoebe special." I lick her face.
She scratches between my ears and I have that rumbling again, my tail wags. "Thank you. Will you tell me all about you?"
"Tell Phoebe about Ebony?" I cock my head. "What does Phoebe want to know?"
She laughs. "Who were you before?"
I sit down flat on her lap and look up at her straight in the eyes. My head is still tilted to the side. "My name was Perseus Jackson." Phoebe drains of color and I whine. "Did I make Phoebe mad?"
She shakes her head. "No, I just didn't realize you were him."
"Perseus Jackson died a long time ago anyway. There are more ways to die than one, Phoebe. Dad found me and bit me. Now I am Phoebe's. Loyalty is strong for you. So is love. But not in that way. Nope. Me no like Phoebe in that way. When I get big, I'll find a mate. Make Phoebe happy." I say.
Phoebe smiles. "Thalia misses you."
"I didn't miss Thalia when I was Perseus because Thalia said something horrible to him. Something she had no right to say. Then broke my heart more, shattered another piece of my soul. Now I tolerate Thalia because of Artemis and you. I will listen to the Lieutenant, but I do not like her." I tell her.
"Can I tell her who you were? She wants to apologize." Phoebe replies.
"No. Phoebe only. Phoebe is nice." I burrow into her warmth as she holds me again.
"How come?" Phoebe asks.
"The Bonding! The Bonding!" I exclaim and laugh.
"The Bonding?" Phoebe asks.
"I get to go through the Bonding with my Phoebe!" I lick her face.
"But what does that mean?" She laughs as she tries to stop me.
"We forged the bond, but we have to make it stay. My one week trial period with you is the first part to see how much you love me and how much I love you. Then we hunt together and then it's done! We glow a pretty color that represents our bond at the end! But you have to see me in my human form first. You have to be there when I first phase human so you can see me. I can do it any time. If people find out who I was on their own, then it's okay. But Phoebe cannot tell them. I spend a week with Artemis too. Which means she has to be there at certain points. Like the human thing and then a hunt and then it's done and I go back to Phoebe because Phoebe is my First Hunt Sister. Phoebe is better than Artemis but the Moon is always special. Phoebe, Phoebe, Phoebe." I yip at her and she smiles.
"I'm not better than milady." Phoebe tells me.
"To me you are!" I bark.
"Thank you." Phoebe scratches between my ears.
"You're welcome, Phoebe." I nuzzle into her hand.
"Will you be moody when you hit your teens again?" She asks, trying not to laugh.
"That's not funny, Phoebe. I was contemplating the bad thing when I was Perseus." I tell her.
"What's the bad thing?" Phoebe asks curiously.
"The bad thing. You know. It gets you sent straight to the Fields of Punishment if you do it yourself." I clear it up.
Her eyes widen. "Suicide?"
"Yes, the bad thing. I suppose I would be moody because I had a ton of bad thoughts and emotions going around on the inside. It was not pretty. Phoebe is pretty." I muse.
"Oh, I hope not. Will you still be hyper? When will you hit your teens?" Phoebe looks a little glum and then perks back up.
"I don't know. I grow all the way in my time with you. Since I was bitten in my late teens, I assume my early teens will be in a couple days. I am supposed to shift between the ages of seven to nine for a starting point. Right now I'm like one. Bad idea." I tell her.
"No wonder you're so little." Phoebe laughs.
"It's not my fault. Daddy bit me when I was young." I say as I paw at her arms.
"But you're so cute. You know, Lady Artemis thinks you are the most decent male ever. Well, were. You aren't Perseus anymore and the wolves only think that way towards their mates. I wish you had a mom." Phoebe scratches the side of my face and I lean into it.
"Aroen looks lonely." I whimper. "I wish I had a mommy. Then I wouldn't feel as empty. All the other ones do. I can tell. Except for the first wolves. Like my daddy and two others that are mates."
"Oh, it'll be okay." Phoebe holds me closer.
"I know it will because Phoebe is here." I yawn.
"It's getting late. It's time for bed. Come on." She gets up and carries me into her tent. "I sleep in the same tent as Thalia. So, the Lieutenant and I are best friends. You'll be near her a lot."
"It's okay. As long as I have you, I'll be just fine." I tell her.
Thalia smiles as Phoebe and I come in. "How's Ebony?"
"Ebony is perfect." Phoebe giggles and sits down across from the Lieutenant.
If I was in a human form, I would be blushing. "Phoebe, that isn't true. I'm not perfect. I am far from it."
"Liar. If you can call me beautiful then I can call you perfect." Phoebe scratches under my chin.
"Hey, stop scratching me so nicely to get your way. But fine. Doesn't mean I'll listen." I place a paw on her hand.
"Then I don't have to listen either." Phoebe warns.
I bark. "Okay, fine. I'll believe you even though it goes against my beliefs."
"Humble and noble little thing aren't you. Modest." Phoebe laughs and I huff.
"Don't make fun of me." I growl playfully.
She giggles. "Tough guy, huh?"
"No, only when Phoebe and others are in danger." I say.
Phoebe crawls into her bed and picks me up after the lights go out. She puts me next to her and I curl up in her arms. She smiles and puts her face in my fur.
