chapter twenty-four: keeping it positive

Months have passed since the unforgettable experience I've put Sam through. I shouldn't have taken her to that cottage, though we did get to the bottom of who her stalker was. Some part of me just felt uncomfortable with her reaction when watching a wolf tear her father up to pieces. That sinister smile on her face made me scared of her... When my father passed away in that car accident, I can somehow feel empathy for her. That burden on your shoulders finally lifting up... It feels amazing, but I wouldn't say that I felt pleasure seeing his dying body in front of me...

Sam and I haven't spoken much since that day. It felt as if my 'mission' was completed in tracking down her stalker and there was nothing more to talk about. Except... that kiss. That kiss left me lingering for more of her precious lips. Thinking of her has filled my mind and well... made me hard as fuck, which frustrated me. I don't know how to release this pressure building up in me.

I decided to make a visit to Bryan and see how he was doing. Since I provided him help by paying for his tuition, he seemed different toward me. When talking to him, the only thing he seems to bring out is, well, university and his studies. I'm not his dad. I don't want to hear about his studies every fucking second of the day. We're supposed to be friends, but he's talking to me as if I'm an authoritative person.

I give my three strong knocks on his dorm room door and wait for his response, instead, I hear the scattering of paper and pens falling. After a moment I hear him call for me to come in.

I walked in and saw him at his desk studying and filling in some notes. "Hey man, just busy studying," he greeted with a nervous smile.

"Let's go for a walk," I demanded as I tilted my head to the door.

He reluctantly followed me outside and we made our way to the old wooden bench peering over the football field. As we took our seats next to one another, I sighed in frustration. "Why are you acting so weird?" I asked as I kept my gaze on the football field.

He looked over to me and with alight hesitation in his voice, he asked, "What do you mean?"

"Don't ask me an idiotic question like that," I huffed. "Why are you acting as if I'm your fucking dad?" I asked in a cold tone as I stared him down. "Ever since I've started paying for your tuition, you don't treat me like a friend anymore," I sighed as I brought my gaze back to my knees.

I could see he was becoming uncomfortable with our conversation, but soon let out, "I just don't want to disappoint you... I don't want you to feel that you're wasting your money on me."

I could somehow understand where he was coming from, but in my perspective, his tuition money didn't even make a dent in my account. I couldn't care less if he took 7 years to finish his degree, as long as I have a friend I can trust with everything.

"Bryan, I don't think I've ever said this to anyone before, but you're my best friend," I said with some hesitation, knowing I'm making myself vulnerable. "I'm sick of talking about your studies the whole time. I couldn't care less if you fail a subject, just as long as you remain my best friend and treat me like the dickhead I am," I explained as I cracked a smile.

I could see a grin forming on his face as the tension in his face released. "Thanks, man," he chuckled. "I've been kind of distancing myself from a lot of people and this talk really made me feel better about the whole situation," he continued. "And you're my best friend too," he smiled as he looked over at me.

We walked back to the dormitory with the sun setting behind us. Bryan followed me into my room and I grabbed two beers out of my mini fridge. We cracked open the beers and started getting into a relaxed conversation. It was nice having someone to talk to again after the whole 'cottage incident'.

"You know," Bryan paused as he took a sip from his beer and then continued. "I thought you and Sam would've definitely been a thing after that weekend."

Ugh, here we go.

"It was nothing," I huffed. "It was only for Sam to clear her head from-," I cut myself off. "From stuff happening in her life."

Thinking of her again brought my mind to that kiss again.

Stop it, Wolf!

"I 100% believe you hit that," he laughed as he took another sip from his beer.

'Hit that'? What does that even mean?

"Nothing happened that weekend," I lied.

Bryan frowned as he looked over at me. "Oh come on, she's fucking hot and you took her to a mysterious cottage in the woods and I'm to believe you didn't have sex with her?"

"I'm still a virgin!" I blurted out and quickly covered my mouth in shock.

Why the fuck did I just say that? God, what is happening to me? I'm a walking embarrassment.

"You're still a virgin?" Bryan asked confused by my statement. "How does someone who looks like that," he gestured to my physique, "and not have been laid yet?"

I cringed at our discussion about my nonexistent sex life. "I'm just not- I don't know, I just don't like the idea of it," I mentioned as I looked around the room trying to ignore his eye contact.

"Well, it's nothing to be embarrassed by..." he awkwardly said. "Are you like A-sexual or something?"

"I thought I was..." I sighed deeply. "Sam and I kissed that weekend and since then, I can't stop thinking about her and every time I do, my dick gets hard, which has never happened before," I explained with my eyes wide open in fear.

"Haven't you ever masturbated before?" he asked confused.

"Never. During puberty, I never felt any need to do anything, since nothing turned me on," I explained.

"Maybe that's why you're so miserable every day, you need to get laid man," he laughed.

"Oh fuck off," I jokingly punched his shoulder as I let out a chuckle.

"Well enough about your depressing sex life, I'm going to party tonight, you should come," he smiled as he threw the beer can in the trash.

"Why not? Let me guess; House Justine?" I smirked.

"It wasn't that hard of a guess," he laughed.

Bryan left my dorm room and I made myself look more approachable. Maybe I should just get over this whole virginity thing and fuck someone. Then again, this goes against my morals: You don't just fuck someone and leave them. I sighed as I looked at myself in the mirror. "Why do I have to be so complicated?" I asked myself out loud. I reached for the worn-out denim jacket I usually wear, but then decided against it. I opened my closet with not a lot of options in sight. I hated shopping and never considered spending money on materialistic things, especially clothes. Then again, this denim jacket has seen better days. I reached for an old-style black leather jacket that I barely wear. It's always been too big for me, but as I pulled my arms through the sleeves, it was a perfect fit.

Did I get fat?

I shook the thoughts out of my head and grabbed my black converse. Bryan and I made our usual stop at the liquor store before attending the party and with no surprise, the house was packed with people as per usual. We met up with our friends and the conversation immediately started flowing. Quinn though wasn't as bubbly as she usually was. She didn't seem sad, but it seems as if someone turned her down a few notches. I didn't quite like this change in her demeanour, though, I don't like change in general, so who am I to say?

"Bryan!" A high-pitched voice called and I could quite literally see Bryan cringe in embarrassment.

"God," Bryan mumbled to himself as he rubbed the temples of his head looking agonised.

Erika trotted over to us with her shiny brown hair flipped left to right with a smile so bright on her face, I could've sworn I saw her whole row of teeth. As she approached us, she jumped into Bryan's arms and hugged him tightly, making him cough a bit to catch his breath.

"Baby, why haven't you returned my calls?" she pouted like a child as she twirled her hair between her fingers.

"Uh," Bryan shrugged uncomfortably. "Let's go and talk somewhere else."

As Bryan and Erika walked away Dante, Adrian and Jared suggested to go and smoke some weed in a different location. I wasn't one who did drugs, so I kindly denied their invitation, surprisingly, Quinn denied them as well. I don't think I've ever been alone with Quinn before. What am I supposed to talk about with her? I don't even know her last name.

"Can I get you something to drink?" she offered abruptly as she walked over to the kitchen. I followed her and accepted her offer. I haven't had a drink yet and I reached for my cooler bag and pulled out a can of beer. "That's so boring," she chuckled as she took the beer out of my hand. "Try this instead," she smiled as she mixed a few things together in a plastic cup. "It's my favourite drink," she said as she handed me the cup.

I looked down into the cup and the liquid was a bright green colour. I unintentionally frowned and she quickly added, "It's lemonade, gin and apple sours."

I'm not much of a gin drinker, but this drink was amazing. It was fruity and fizzy without the horrible taste of gin. "This is actually pretty good," I nodded as I took another sip.

"Adrian hates it, but I find it quite delicious," she smiled as we made our way back outside.

This time, there was no bonfire lit, but the pool was packed with people. I guess this is what happens when summer has arrived. "Don't you ever get hot?" Quinn asked. "I don't think I've ever seen you sleeveless," she chuckled.

It only just dawned on me that I barely go out without a jacket. All of a sudden the nightly heat struck me and I undressed my jacket. "So, tell me," I breathed. "Why are you not yourself?" I asked.

"Not every day goes by where I can be all sunshine and rainbows," she sighed with a grin on her face as she moved a piece of her golden hair behind her ear. "But if you have to know, Adrian and I are having some problems," she sighed. "But nothing that cannot be fixed," she quickly added.

Positive as always.

"Anyways!" she quickly interjected before I could say anything in response. "Tell me about Sam," she smirked as she nudged my side.

I couldn't help but smile, but I quickly wiped it off trying to hide my affection for her. "There's nothing to say," I said calmly.

"Oh please, she can't shut up about you," she smirked as she took a sip from her drink.

Can't shut up about me? I didn't expect to hear that.

"We haven't talked much..." I mentioned.

"She's been quite shy around you since, you know, you two have kissed. Which in retrospect is extremely unlike her," Quinn thought out loud.

Bryan soon returned without Erika. His face showed guilt, but mostly relief. "Got her off your shoulders?" Quinn asked as she giggled.

"It's not fun breaking a girl's heart," he shrugged. "So what are you guys talking about?" he asked as he placed his hands in his pockets.

"We're talking about him and Sam," Quinn smiled as she pointed to me.

"Guessing you and Sam are the talk of the town," he chuckled. "Well, Sam did mention that she's not feeling that well, so she won't attend this party," he added.

Why would she let Bryan know and not me? I need to see if she's okay.
