chapter five: the stag

Ben's POV

It was just after sunset, that time of night when forms begin to vanish in the dim light. I walked for a little more than a kilometre, into a nearby forest. My feet tread calm and confident on the pine needle floor, that comfortably cloaked the Earth. Upon approaching a grey rock covered in a blanket of moss. I adjusted my seat onto the rock, making it as comfortable as possible. The forest was quiet with distant echoes of singing birds and frogs yelping.

I never expected I would snap like that. It's just a sculpture. I know he didn't mean to destroy my sculpture...

The words of the pines, an ancient murmured melody, were chanted for each visiting spirit, as a tangle of green swayed in the fragrant breeze. I heard the noises of a tranquil animal sniffing loudly, sensing something was wrong. It's attempting to improve its scent, which is one of the simplest methods for them to locate you. The sniff sounds similar to a human sniff, but it's louder and deeper as if the air is being drawn in through a deer's enormous nose. The crunch under the animal's hooves sounded of one who is cautious. Tilting my head to the side from curiosity, staying put on the clammy rock. A stag has appeared. Although the stag's body still had a sliver of youth, the quantity of flesh he had filled out indicated that he was approaching his peak years. The stag approached slowly, observing me intensively.

"Those are some big antlers, buddy," I said with a slight smile forming on my face.

Never had a wild animal approached me in this manner. He was curious, with an intrigued face. The silence grew louder as he stared into my soul, almost as if he was watching every memory stored inside of me. With a gentle movement of his snout, he rubbed my nose, leaving some dirt speckled over my face. And with that, he graciously hopped away, disappearing between the densely packed trees.

Wolf's point of view

With little motivation I stared blankly at the opened textbook, sitting uncomfortably in a whimsy chair. The old library features a few tall walls of antique publications, although they are largely used as props to set the setting. The library is a terrific place to forget about your social peers and focus on your studies, but my mind still felt dimmed by what had happened earlier.

I need a cigarette.

As I walked out of the library, I noticed the sky has turned dark and I observed how the icy cold air contrasted with the warm, inviting atmosphere of the library. Even while my jacket kept me warm, frost formed on the windows of the library. For a while, I just stood there watching the ice crystals grow, letting my mind empty, satisfied to exist and be. The elegance of the frost would undoubtedly be present on this cold night, as would the crunch underfoot and the bold greeting that cold air provides.

In the distance, I saw Ben walking gracefully with only a long sleeve shirt and shorts on. I looked down at the pack of cigarettes in my hand and placed it back in my pocket, taking my stride toward him in counts of four.

"Aren't you cold?" I asked hesitantly, falling my step in next to him.

"Not really," he muttered with a slight shiver running down his body.

Yeah, sure.

"Take this," I said as offered him my jacket, revealing my bare arms.

"Thanks," he sheepishly said as he zipped up the jacket almost immediately. "I'm sorry for snapping at you like that, it wasn't your fault," he said with a sigh.

"If it was my project, I'd probably strangle you," I said as I side-eyed him.

Ben kept quiet looking down at his feet when a familiar voice yelled his name.

"Arlo?" Ben said confused, looking around searching for him.

"What are you doing out so late? And get this ugly jacket off of you!" Arlo said in a raspy voice, unzipping the jacket.

"It's Wolf's," Ben mentioned with a raised eyebrow. "Why does your voice sound like that?"

Ben handed over the jacket to me and quickly drew his attention back to Arlo, worryingly.

"I'm a bit sick, I'd like for you to come to spend the night," Arlo said, whispering loudly enough so that I can hear.

This guy, something is really off with this guy...

I soon strode away, dismissing my thoughts and Arlo's presence. All I heard was that I can sleep in my dwell peacefully and alone.

Aside from the deplorable circumstances in our dorm, the bathrooms were well-maintained and constantly in immaculate condition. The shower water is like flawless rain, warm and consistent, and it awakens my skin in all the right ways. Brushing my teeth was a different story. I hated it. With a mind as brilliant as mine is, I couldn't pass it up as being a chore. Ten times up, ten-times down, ten times up, ten times down. Now move to the front row, ten times up, ten times down, rinse and ten times back and forth on my tongue. What a way to live a miserable life.

Upon arriving in front of my door, I noticed it was unlocked.

Did Ben decide to sleep here instead?

I opened the door and felt very uncomfortable. It felt as if I was going to throw up. The girl was sitting on my bed.

"What do you think you're doing?" I asked feeling almost too frozen to breathe.

"Waiting for you," she said casually as if she couldn't sense my utter disbelief in what I'm seeing.

"Get off of my bed," I demanded with still a shocked look on my face.

She quickly jumped up and made her way onto my dresser. I felt as if my whole body went into panic mode.

"Get off of my dresser!" I yelled with a slight panic in my voice, still standing frozen in one place.

"Damn, you really are stuck up with your things," she said as she hopped onto Ben's bed.

Stuck up?

"What are you doing in here. I locked the door," I stuttered, slowly placing my towel at the end of my bed.

"No you didn't," she quickly replied, swinging her legs from the bed.

"Yes I did," I said with an angry frown on my face, crossing my arms.

"No you didn't," she went on with a smug look on her face.

What is this girl's deal?

I huffed in annoyance and roughly rubbed my wet hair with the towel, trying to ignore her stares with those dark brown eyes.

"Thanks for standing up for me," she said as she twirled a piece of her brown hair between her fingers. Or blonde hair, I don't know what colour hair that is.

"What are you talking about?" I asked with a confused tone of voice.

"Professor Assface sent me an email apologising for his behaviour towards me... thanks to you," she said with a  smirked smile.

"And what are you doing in my room?" I asked as I rolled my eyes, dismissing her pathetic excuse for a 'thank you'.

"Seemed fitting to show my admiration for you in person," she sarcastically said.

"Well, you can get out now," I snapped, pointing my finger to the door.

"I don't want to," she smiled as she stretched her body out on the bed.

Okay, what the fuck is happening? Does she not get the message?

I stood in silence just staring at her. She didn't care about my personal space and seemed oblivious to the fact that I was uncomfortable with her presence. I didn't like this. I picked up her body threw her over my shoulder, strutting towards the door. I placed her outside and shut the door in front of her.

"Just FYI, that was rude!" she yelled from outside and walked off, her footsteps disappearing as she walked further down the hall.

I rolled my eyes and locked the door. Although she's gone, the scent from her perfume that smell of oranges, lingered in the air. She has marked my territory.
