When they set up camp that night, Cora sat away from the group.
Fili was about to follow her, but Gandalf stopped him.
"Give her time to think. If she wishes to speak to you, she will do so through your thoughts." he said.
"If there are any." Kili pointed out.
"Very funny Kili." Fili replied.
Suddenly, Fili heard Cora's voice in his head.
You have to admit, that was funny. All you have to do is think, and I'll hear it.
Are you ok? Why did you sit alone over there?
I don't know. I'm not normally welcomed into a group so easily.
Well, you fit in.
How would you know? I haven't spoken much.
You got me there.
You can come over hear if you want. Just warning you though, it's cold.
Fili stood up and began to walk over to her, but again, Gandalf stopped him.
"I told you, let her be." he told the dwarf.
"Yeah, well she used that mind communication thingy and told me I could come over." Fili replied, walking towards her.
Gandalf stopped you again, didn't he?
Yeah, but oh well.
It's extremely cold right now.
Fili sat beside her and slipped an arm around her shoulders.
That better?
Yes, thank you.
So, when did you discover your power?
I was three, and I had just lost my parents.
How?
How did I discover my powers?
No, how did you lose your parents?
Th-they were killed by orcs when I was three, and I was saved by an elf, and I'm not sure who the elf was.
Oh, I'm sorry.
My little brother was a month old. They killed him too.
I'm really sorry, I shouldn't have asked.
It's fine Fili. I needed to get it off my shoulders anyway.
Fili turned to face her, just as she looked at him, and her brushed the tears off her cheek with his thumb.
You're beautiful, you know that?
No I'm not.
Of course you are, trust me.
Why do you insist on contradicting me?
I must not tell lies(yes, a harry potter quote. deal with it)
Meanwhile, Kili had gone to patrol the perimeter of the camp, and found an elf.
The elf was unconscious, and had lost a lot of blood. She had light brown hair, and bright green eyes.
Kili carried her back to camp to treat her wounds.
"Who is this?" asked Thorin.
"I don't know. I found her in the woods, and she is badly wounded." Kili told his uncle.
"She is an elf. Why should we care?" Thorin snapped.
Kili reguarded his uncle coldly for a few moments before replying.
"I care because I actually have a heart, and I don't hold lifelong grudges. If you have a problem with it, kick me out of the company." he said.
Hearing no further complaints, Kili took the girl to his place by the fire, and began to wash her wounds.
She had taken a dagger to the side, which was still there, and an arrow to the shoulder that was still there too.
He carefully bandaged them, and soon after, she awoke, sitting up.
"Where am I, and who are you?" she asked him, glancing at the bloody dagger beside him on the ground.
"You are in the company of Thorin Oakenshield, and I am Kili Durin. What's your name?" he replied.
"Promise. Are you the one who bandaged my wounds?"
"Yes. Why were you on your own?"
"I was captured by orcs shortly after I left Rivendell to travel Mirkwood."
"Why were you on your own?"
"My father, Lord Elrond, didn't think I would need a full gaurd, for the prince of Mirkwood, who had just been hunting orcs in the area, had just passed that way with his men."
"Ok, that makes sense."
Cora had just looked up, and put her conversation with Fili on hold, because she heard a very familiar voice.
"Promise!" she exclaimed, jumping up, and scaring Fili.
Promise's head snapped up, and she jumped up and ran to embrace her friend, startling Kili.
The two girls embraced, and started asking questions.
"What are you doing here?" Cora asked Promise excitedly.
"I was on my way to Mirkwood to give a letter from my father to Legolas's father. Cora, my father is trying to force us into an arranged marriage! Legolas was soooo mad when he found out! He put his fist through a wall! Thranduil doesn't want it to happen either." Promise explained.
"What go Legolas so mad about it? Does he hate you all of a sudden?"
"No, but if we get stuck in an arranged marriage, he won't be able to marry the girl he's in love with."
"Who's that?"
"I am sworn to secrecy by my surrogate brother."
"Well I'll just ask him later."
"He won't tell you."
"Whatever." Cora then turned to Fili who had been standing behind her the whole time, and was wondering who this Legolas character was, because he had come to a conclusion that Cora hadn't. "I'm going to bed."
She went and laid down, and Fili laid down beside her, and slipped his arms around her waist, pulling her closer.
She rolled over to face him, and he kissed her forehead. She finally realized they were more than friends. She set a hand on his chest, and laid her head on her hand.
Since Fili fell asleep almost immediately, she decided to find out what Thorin was thinking about.
I wish there was a way I could guarantee that everyone will come out of this alive.
But there isn't, Thorin. Dragons are extremely tough. There are also orcs in the area, or Kili wouldn't have found Promise, and she would've died.
I really was not expecting a response. I figured you would be talking to your friend.
Nope.
Thorin stopped staring at the fire long enough to look where she and Fili were, and she saw him smirk.
Comfy?
Definitely not cold.
I wouldn't think so. He's full of hot air.
I'll let you go back to your thoughts. Good night.
Good night.
She instead decided to talk to Legolas.
Tinúviel elvanui
Elleth alfirin edhelhael
O hon ring finnil fuinui
A renc gelebrin thiliol…
I don't know what that means. My elvish sucks.
Tinúviel the elven-fair,
Immortal maiden elven-wise,
About him cast her shadowy hair
And arms like silver glimmering...
Oh.
Why are you listening to my thoughts at this time of night?
I'm on an adventure with Gandalf, Thorin Oakenshield, and 12 other dwarves. Promise showed up too. She had been attacked by orcs that moved into the area after you and your men left.
Oh, is she ok?
She had a dagger in her side and an arrow in her shoulder, but yes, she will be fine.
Is your adventure passing through Mirkwood?
I think so.
I hope so. It's been a while since I've seen you.
I know.
Lord Elrond wants Promise and I to be married.
I think she like Kili, Thorin's nephew, better.
Good, because that means the arranged marriage will not go through.
Speaking of which, I heard you punched a wall when you heard about it. Who's the girl you're in love with?
Not saying. My only clue is that I have talked to her today.
Well then. Good night Legolas.
Good night...
She was asleep before he finished.
...My love.
