Chapter three
My stomach churned as me and my mother were taken to separate places to be interrogated. There was no way I'd be able to hide what I knew now, I just knew it. This was going to be a nightmare.
Before I knew it I was placed in a small room that I couldn't see out of, but I was sure other people could see in. Thankfully, the person who came in with me was a petite woman with the brightest blue eyes I'd ever seen. She seemed nice enough; maybe that would make things easier on her. The woman and I took seats opposite each other at a small table. She stared at me seriously, and spoke calmly. "Now. I'm going to ask you some questions. Just answer me as honestly as possible. Okay?" I swallowed hard and nodded. The woman folded her hands on the table and looked at me calmly. "Where were you at 8:30 pm last night?" I but my lip. "I-I was walking home from school with my friend, Grace." My forehead was sweating a bit. Could she see through me...?
"Why were you coming home from school so late?" The woman asked skeptically. I licked my lips. "Um, well, there was a school get-together after school to finish our projects that ran late."
The woman eyed me suspiciously. "So if I called your school, would they admit to that?"
Thankfully, that was entirely true. "Yes, ma'am."
She say up straight. "Tell me, did you see anything suspicious happening around your house at the time of the murder?" I shook my head hesitantly. "Nope... Nothing." God, why'd I have to be so bad at lying...?
To my surprise, the woman reached her hand out to me and squeezed it reassuringly. "Please, don't be afraid to tell us the truth. We aren't going to hurt you, we're just doing our jobs. Are you sure you didn't notice anything suspicious?"
I squeezed my eyes shut tight. Shoot... There was no way I could keep it from her any longer. I had no choice; I knew it was the right thing to do. I couldn't keep this up. I needed to come clean. Maybe if I explained the situation she could help me... She was a police officer after all. I took a deep breath and looked her dead in the eye. "Yes. I know everything."
