Ch. 27

Avalonna

The roars were deafening and managed to shake the stone palace to it's core. Drow held Avalonna close as she looked back and forth between Nera and Diamandra.

"How could dragons be here, Nera, why now?" Diamandra asked in a hurried voice.

"I do not know." Nera replied.
"Dragons haven't been seen for ages, the last ones left us when the Council went into hiding."

"We must gather the other witches, protect our home." She added and vanished.

"Come, you two. We much act quickly." Diamandra stated and addressed Avalonna and Drow.

"Are all the other members of the Council here?" Avalonna asked as the three of them ran outside.

"No..." Diamandra responded after a moment's hesitation.
"Our numbers and strength were depleted after years of persecution. Here, it is just Nera, myself, Cyra and Thol. Cyra is our healing expert and Thol is an elemental warlock." She added.

The three of them ran outside and Avalonna's heart skipped a beat as the largest of four dragons landed near the trio. The beast was close enough that his heat and power could be felt. He was as black as the night sky and smoke bellowed from his nostrils. His scales were large and reflective and made the dragon look even more monstrous. His wingspan took up nearly half the field and he breathed out piles of smoke.

"Drakar!" Diamandra called out to the beast. She hid it well, but Avalonna could still hear the nervousness in her voice.
"Why do you attack us in our home, our sanctuary?" She demanded.

"Do not dare to try and question me, witch." The dragon replied in a deep voice that seemed to echo off the walls of the listener's mind.
"I am here because I was sent to exterminate the one from Eversong. My mistress did not know the witch would be here so soon. She cares not if you perish alongside her."

"We have done nothing to your kind!" Diamandra replied.

From behind the dragon, a bright light flashed and Nera appeared with a male and female human on either side of her. The male was Dwarven with a long beard and wore dark blue armor and robes. The female was considerably older than Avalonna and wore a short sleeve green gown. She was slender with a mess of light brown hair.

"Drakar we ask you to stop this." Nera said commandingly.
"This is not like you to attack unprovoked, how does one control the king of the dragons?"

The dragon clearly did not approve of the question, and roared loudly as it shot out black flames towards Nera. She put up her hands and a pale green shield of light prevented the dragon's fire from reaching the Council members. Avalonna was impressed with how the older witches cast their spells without words.

The dragon took flight and sent massive fireballs hurtling into the snowy ground below.

"Drow, we have to help!" Avalonna yelled out. She was beginning to feel guilty and worried as her mind raced through many different events all at once. This was not supposed to be happening, this was sacred land. She was supposed to train here, not fight a fleet of dragons before she had even began. The snowy fields began to melt and flames replaced the ice. She had brought this chaos and fire to the Council homelands, and fire had always meant death to her loved ones.

"We will, Val, but you need to focus." Drow stated and grabbed hold of her hand. She exhaled slowly and relaxed until their heartbeats began to match up.
"We can stop this, there's four dragons and six of us. Plus, we have more magic than the dragons." He added with a smile.

Before Avalonna could reply, she felt a weight in the palm of her hand. She smiled in return as she realized Drow had placed the small pseudodragon statue in her hand. Avalonna squeezed the statue lightly and focused her energy into it. A moment later, a brilliant dragon made of her energy flew into the sky and shot towards the other dragons. She had managed to infuse her pseudodragon with the power of her magical dragon. She felt a big loss in her energy, but it was worth it. The new dragon battled the smallest of the four and the two of them roared loudly and shot fireballs from their mouths.

"You have created a spirit dragon." Drow said, giving Avalonna a confident smile.
"This battle is far from over." he added. Avalonna returned the smile and ran towards Nera and the others.

"How do we stop the dragons?" She asked, keeping an eye out as the other dragons circled around them. One was as golden as the sun and shot out hot yellow flames. The other was as white as the snow, and released an ice breath from it's mouth.

Diamandra concentrated and closed her eyes.
"The smallest is a red dragon, your spirit dragon should be able to hand it." She stated.
"The golden one is a sun dragon, Nera I believe you and Cyra should target him. I will need Drow and Thol to handle the ice dragon while Avalonna and I battle the shadow dragon." She commanded. Despite her age, she was well adapt at giving out orders.

"How will we know this will work?" Avalonna asked.

"Diamandra is an Oracle, she has seen several possible outcomes for events and always picks the best possible one to go through." Nera stated. Something about the way she said it made Avalonna feel that the best possible outcome was not always a good thing.

"Did you say he's a shadow dragon? I thought he was a black dragon, I have never seen a shadow up close." Drow added.

"Yes, something has altered him into becoming this form. A similar process to Avalonna creating her spirit dragon, I imagine." Diamandra replied.
"I can not see exactly what has happened to him, it is as if something is preventing me."

"Is a shadow dragon more dangerous?" Avalonna asked aloud.

"Yes, several times stronger and one of the few beings that is capable of killing your spirit dragon." Drow replied.

Avalonna felt her heartbeat race. Even though she did not know her dragon long, it was her dragon. She did not want something of hers perishing in flames again.

"Ok, I trust in your plan, Diamandra." said Avalonna.

"Thank you." Diamandra replied with a nod.
"We must move fast, the dragons are known for fleeing once they feel the odds are no longer in their favor. Because of this, we must make it seem like we are winning at all costs. Do not stop, at heart dragons are animals and respect whoever can prove themselves superior."

Avalonna nodded and they all went into action. Drow pulled Avalonna to the side and gave her a quick, but meaningful, kiss. It reminded her of the many they shared some time ago. They both smiled and nodded to each other confidently and went out to execute Diamandra's plan.

Avalonna saw her spirit dragon gain the upper hand against the red dragon, and smiled with relief. Her smile quickly faded as she approached the large shadow dragon. She tried not to get distracted by the other fights, but she couldn't help herself.

The golden dragon unleashed it's brilliant fire against Nera, who with help from Cyra and her enchantments, blocked it perfectly. She then redirected the attack and sent it right back at the dragon.

Drow had shapeshifted into a bear and was fighting the ice dragon head on. The two beasts slammed into each other and that's when a cyclone made of flames encircled the dragon. Thol was chanting with his eyes closed and used his elemental spells to bind his foe. Avalonna smiled as her friends began to gain the upper hand.

"Do not think for a second that you can win, or survive, this battle, witch." The shadow dragon addressed her as it approached.
"Dragons have lived for centuries, we were the ones who first created magic. All magical beings of today are our descendants. How can you hope to defeat us with a few minor tricks? You will all fall." The dragon stated. He spoke in a way that was not threatening, but made it seem like he was reciting facts. To him, what he said would happen, there was no way around it.
