Chapter Thirteen: Kanima
Two long hours had passed, we mostly splashed around in the water, trying to keep ourselves about the water. The creature circled the outline of the pool, not daring to enter the water, but we couldn't leave due to it trying to kill us.
"Ok, ok," Stiles states, his breath was short, as he was tiring from floating above water with extra weight on him. "Okay, I don't think I can do this much longer," water spurted out of his mouth as he talked. As he looked towards the side of the pool which held his phone.
"I have a plan," I spoke, my head bobbing above the water as Derek and Stiles took their gazes at me. "I'll distract the creature, while Stiles gets his phone to call Scott,"
"No, no, no, no! Don't even think about it," Derek stressed out, as his head was getting lower into the water as Stiles couldn't last to hold him.
"Can you just trust us this once?" Stiles spoke quickly, looking at Derek as I did the same.
"No!" Derek replied within a second of Stiles finishing his sentence off.
"He's the one keeping you alive and I'm being bait," I spoke with haste as we couldn't keep chatting away, every second we lost our strength. Well their strength.
"Yeah. And when the paralysis wears off, who's going to be able to fight that thing, you two or me?" Derek states.
"You know what I can do Derek, you've seen me in action," I said, as I got a confused gaze from Stiles, but I had passed it off as we needed to focus.
"That's why I've been holding you up for the past two hours?" Stiles spoke, water exiting his mouth as the water was bobbing up and down, as we created waves under the surface.
"Yup. You don't trust me. I don't trust you. But you need me to survive, which is why you're not letting me go," Derek spoke the truth. We didn't trust him, but deep down I wanted to trust him more than anything.
Stiles looked to Derek for a moment and then his eyes locked onto me. I knew what he was thinking and I agreed with him. With a nod of my head, Stiles threw Derek's arm from around his neck. We both hurried towards the side of the pool. I went in front of Stiles as he swam behind me. As we neared the side, the creature walked out from the side of the pool, it was hissing at us as it had seen.
"Do something," Stiles said quickly, his eyes burning into the back of my skull as the creature neared. I raised my arm up from out of the water, my hand turning into a fist at the creature. As my hand was in a fist the creature began to scream in pain as the spell was working, it crawled backwards, it's hands touched it's scale head.
"Get the phone. I can't hold it for much longer," Stiles quickly swam past me, making splashes along the way. My fist hand began to tremble and shake, the toxins were still in my body. I see Stiles reach the edge, but my body gave out, and my hand dropped to the water. The creature had stopped screaming, and was quickly recovered, before looking eyes with Stiles before the creature lunged towards him. But Stiles was quick and grabbed his phone just before the creature could come any closer.
Stiles swam back to where we had left Derek and I was on his tail this time around,as the creature hissed and screamed at us. We made it back in no time and Stiles began to dial Scott's number. Before putting it to his ear.
"Scott!" Stiles said with fear in his voice, but all I could hear was the phone beep again as he just hung up on him. Water filled my ears, it was harder to hear. I looked to Stiles to see him shocked, before he looked down in the water to see Derek. "Agh!" he let out before throwing the phone into the water, and dove under for Derek.
Within seconds he grabbed Derek and they were both back on the surface of the water, both gasping for air. "Tell me you got him!" Derek said, hoping that we had got him and letting him nearly drown was worth it. But Stiles and I didn't say a word, and Derek took it as we didn't get help, he groaned, in annoyances. I went to the other side of Derek to help support him with Stiles.
I was hoping someone was going to come save us, but there was a slim chance...
About an hour later, we were still floating in the water, Stiles and Derek were both gasping, as they were getting tired of staying up. "I can't stay up any longer," Stiles spoke as he splashed around, holding Derek at one side and I held him at the other. "I need something to hold on to," he began to look behind us to see a pole that was stuck out on one of the diving boards. We both began to swim towards it, carrying Derek with us.
As we swam, I could tell Stiles was losing energy and he couldn't keep Derek up. As we neared the pole Stiles reached out for it, but his hands were wet and slipped right off of the pole, making him no longer stay above the water. Dragging Derek and I under the water with him.
I let go of Derek as two hands went into the water, reaching for Stiles and Derek and pulled them up. As I popped my head out of the water I saw it was Scott, and with one big raise of his arms, he flung Stiles and Derek onto the floor behind him, as they were both gasping for air.
Scott roared loudly as he could to get the attention of the creature. I quickly swam to the side and pushed myself up on the edge, my outfit soaked as well as my hair. I looked like a drowned rat. As I sat on the side of the pool, my legs were still dangled in. I heard a roar then a 'crash' and a 'smash' of glass. I took my gaze down the pool side to see Scott on his back in a pile of glass. But he quickly crouches and grabs a piece of glass from the smashed one and holds it up in defence, ready to attack.
However, the creature just stares at the reflection in the piece of glass, like it didn't know who it was or what it was. Before any of us knew, the creature began to climb at unnatural speed, and once he was at the top he swung on a piece of the rafters and out of the glass top above the pool, gone from our sights. As glass fell like a waterfall from above.
Scott looked shocked for a moment as he turned his gaze to Derek, Stiles, and I. Before dropping his head in relief. Derek had been breathing heavily as he started to move again. I sighed, before standing up from the poolside. Ready to learn what this creature is...
........................................
Out in the car park of the school, Scott had gotten a laptop and told us that he had found the Bestiary, it wasn't a book but held on a USB drive. We stood at the front of his car, the laptop on the bonnet as we looked through the digital pages of the Bestiary.
"Is that even a language?" Stiles had questions as we looked through the digital pages, but they were in a different language and I feel like I've read it before, somewhere.
"How are we supposed to figure out what this thing is?" Scott had said, as he clicked through another page.
"It's called a kanima," Derek had spoken up as he walked towards us with Erica by his side.
"You knew?" I asked, my voice laced with disbelief and a hint of anger.
"No. Only when it was confused by its own reflection," Derek had spoken, his eyes looked at mine for a moment before passing onto Stiles and Scott.
"It doesn't know what it is," Scott states, now grasping the concept of it.
"Or who," Derek had added. A creature who doesn't know what or who it is, was very strange to me. But there must be something in one of the many books I have at home.
"What else do you know?" Stiles had said, slightly annoyed with the fact Derek knew something that he didn't.
"Just stories. Rumours."
"But it's like us?" Scott said, wondering if it was like them and in a way it was.
"A shape-shifter, yes. But it's--it's not right. It's like a..." Derek was searching for the correct word to use in this matter, but only one word came to my mind, and a word that I heard too often.
"Abomination," I spoke the word, forcing it out of my mouth, but to others it came out with ease. The word sent a shiver down my spine. It wasn't a word that I used often, and hated it because at one time in my life, I saw myself as one...
Derek's eyes connected to mine, like he knew the word was painful for me to say. His eyes held sorrow for a moment, but he nodded his head at me like it was the correct word to use. Derek and Erica turned ready to walk away.
"Derek," Scott had said, making Derek stop in his tracks and turn back to face us. "We need to work together on this. Maybe even tell the Argents," Scott had wondered if telling the Argents would be useful in this case, as we didn't know as much as they did.
"You trust them?" He asked, but his voice was filled with anger and hate.
"Nobody trusts anyone. That's the problem," Scott had raised his voice slightly more than normal to make his point valid because it was true, nobody does trust anyone. "While we're here arguing about who's on what side, there's something scarier, stronger, and faster than any of us, and it's killing people! And we still don't know anything about it!" Scott's tone held throughout his rant. I highly doubt it could be stronger, faster than me. I become stronger and faster with age, and I've been alive for nearly 400 years.
"I know one thing," Derek began. "When I find it..." He turned away, Erica following his action. "I'm gonna kill it," his back was on us as we all stared at him, his all body language was emitting anger.
If Derek found the Kanima and killed it, he could be killing a kid for all we know, and I couldn't let that happen....
I won't let that happen....
