The Academy

Shelby's Perspective-

Sorry for all the time skips :)

Shelby smiled as she walked into the academy.

It was her first year of trying to be a witch; just like her mother.

But being a witch wasn't as easy as she thought it was going to be.

-

Shelby walked into her potions class and sat down next to a girl with sky blue hair.

"Hi!" Shelby said, smiling, "I'm Shelby!"

The girl shook Shelby's hand, "Caleb!"

Just then, their teacher, Professor Hasley, walked in and clapped her hands.

"Welcome, future witches!" She smiled, looking at each one of them, "This is potions class, where we will be learning the effects of potions and how to make them."

She started walking around, "This is not an easy class, and it takes a lot of focus and dedication!"

Shelby saw Caleb straighten her back.

"You will need to know what ingredients to gather and how to gather them safely! Today, we will be reviewing some common potions and the effects of them."

Everyone got out a quill, ink, and parchment as they started writing.

-

Shelby smiled as she finished her doodle of a cat and Professor Hasley walked past.

She snatched up the paper before Shelby could grab it.

This caught attention of everyone, and they watched as Professor Hasley's lips formed into a tiny line and her eyes showed great dislike.

"Ms. Shubble, will you please stay after class?" Professor Hasley asked, taking the paper up to her desk.

Shelby felt her face heat up as everyone else started packing up and slowly filed out as class finished.

Shelby walked up to Professor Hasley's desk.

"Ms. Shubble, did you take any notes from today?" She asked, showing Shelby her paper.

Shelby nodded, "Yeah! You can see the writing on there."

Professor Hasley turned the paper around and her eyes narrowed.

"I see that you took notes on two of the ten potions we reviewed. And I can't even read what you wrote!"

Shelby looked at the paper, "Well I can!"

Professor Hasley shook her head.

"Ms. Shubble, being a witch means you need to focus. Please do not be doodling during class, you will miss this important information that will pop up on the exam later this year!"

Shelby hung her head and nodded sadly.

"Now since it is the first day, I will let this slide. But please pay attention in other classes, as some of them get pretty tricky. I suggest you get the notes from another student who was paying attention."

Professor Hasley handed Shelby her paper and stood up.

She walked Shelby to the door and opened it up.

"Don't worry," She said, "I'm not too mad. Your cat was very cute."

Shelby smiled nervously and left.

That was about the only time Professor Hasley had ever been nice to her.

Time Skip (through the months)-

Shelby and Caleb became good friends through the year and started hanging out a lot.

Caleb paid attention and often helped Shelby out with upcoming quizzes and tests, but even Caleb wasn't prepared for the exams, let alone how to help Shelby study for them.

-

"Oh cod, oh cod, how are we supposed to study?" Shelby asked, pacing around their room.

Caleb was flipping through books, taking notes.

"Well, I know how I'm going to study." Caleb said, shutting her book and sighing.

She rubbed her eyes which had black circles under them.

"What about me?" Shelby asked nervously, "How are you going to help me study?"

Caleb looked panicked and shrugged.

"What do you mean you don't know?! You always help me study for these things, you have to have some sort of idea!" Shelby said desperately.

Caleb got up and shrugged Shelby off.

"I need to focus on me, Shelby. I want to help you, I really do, but until exams are done, I need to take a break from you."

And she left.

Shelby looked around, her breath rushing and her anxiety reaching its peak.

She started pacing around, trying to think, but her mind didn't let her.

Calm down, Shelby. She thought to herself, taking deep breaths.

She looked at her hands, which were shaking as she tried to calm down.

Gosh, what did Caleb have us do to study? What worked?

But after hours of thinking, Shelby went to bed without studying.

The Next Day-

Potions.

That was her first and last exam.

Shelby walked into the class where Professor Hasley sat.

She was testing them one at a time.

"Hello Ms. Shubble." Professor Hasley said, nodding at Shelby.

Shelby smiled nervously and waved as she walked up to the desk where a cauldron, scale, and other tools sat.

"Today, I would like you to make me a Forgetfulness Potion." Professor Hasley said, "You may begin."

Shelby nodded and looked around at the cabinets.

She felt her professor's eyes on her, and her blood pressure spike up as she panicked.

After a couple minutes, Professor Hasley sighed and got up, walking towards Shelby.

"Ms. Shubble, will you please tell me what the first step to making a Forgetfulness potion is?" Professor Hasley asked.

"Er...grabbing the ingredients?" Shelby said nervously, searching the cabinets.

Professor Hasley sighed and wrote something on her clipboard.

"It seems you have even failed that. Ms. Shubble, witchcraft takes focus and dedication, it is not a joke."

Shelby looked up nervously, "I'm not trying to make a joke of it! Really! I'm trying; I want to be a witch!"

Professor Hasley nodded, a stern look on her face as she tucked the clipboard under her arm.

"Need I remind you, Ms. Shubble, you have been messing around during class, not studying before these exams, and clearly just wanting to distract your fellow peers. Or what used to be your fellow peers."

Professor Hasley then turned around and opened the door.

"I expect you should start packing as I am going straight to the headmistress and talking to her about how maybe you weren't meant to be a witch after all."

And she left, shutting the giant, wooden door behind her.

Shelby stood there, her breath rushing as tears started to fall.

"She's right." Shelby sobbed to herself, "I can't do anything right. I'm not meant to be a witch."

Shelby got up and walked to her room, sniffing and hiccupping as she packed her things.

Her hands were shaking as she finished packing up her stuff and she grabbed her broom.

They're going to break my wand now that I'm expelled.

Another voice then started talking to Shelby.

'What if you just run away? Your parents are dead so it's not like anyone will care. Just leave before they break your wand!'

Shelby, her breath rushing, looked around before nodding.

Alright. She thought, running out of her dorm.

Tears were forming in her eyes as she ran down to the entrance of the school.

She passed by some other students who looked at her but didn't say anything.

Shelby then made it out of the school and got on her broom.

She gasped as the broom wobbled from the weight of her bag, but it then took off.

Shelby, her hands shaking as she started to fly off, didn't feel any better.

If anything, she felt worse.

Where am I supposed to go?
