Chapter 12: Dinner Guests
" Tobias are you ready?" My mam called.
I tried to get Ava out of my head by practicing my fighting. When that didn't work I decided to have a nap.
But not even sleep could rid my mind of Ava and her soul branding blue eyes. My dreams were plagued with her blue eyes, her smooth voice, her orange hair glowing in the sunlight.
My mam woke me up from my nap and yelled at me to get ready for dinner which is in five minutes.
I looked in my full body mirror pulling at the itchy blazar my mam is making me wear.
She is making me wear a white buttoned-up shirt with black pants and a black blazer. My usual fancy outfit for special occasions. I really wish I didn't have to wear it. Sometimes I daydream about cutting this stupid suit up and then burning the pieces.
" Dammit boy do you have wax in your ears, are you ready!" My mam bellowed from downstairs.
" Yes, I am ready!" I yelled back.
" Then get your lazy ass down here are guests should be here soon!"
" You and your mam have an odd relationship master." Halin squawked.
" My aunt says the only reason she treats me like this is that I look a lot like my dad." I sighed.
It's a very stupid reason. I somewhat understand she misses my dad but that doesn't give her the right to take it out on me.
" Master if you don't mind me asking, but what happened to your father?"
" He was killed while on a mission before I was born." I quickly explained.
" Sorry for your loss master."
" You shouldn't be, I didn't even know him. I don't know him," I growled, let's just go downstairs before my mam blows her head off."
Halin swooped down onto my shoulder. As usual, his talons dug into my shoulder but I don't feel it anymore.
The wooden stairs thudded as I walked down them. The stairs slightly shook under the weight of my boots.
We really need to fix these stairs before something goes wrong.
I could hear the laughter of the witches as they approached our house.
" Dammit, Tobias fix that collar now." My mam hissed as she made her way to the door.
I was slightly shocked to see my mam wearing a new dress. As always it is a black dress that flowed to the floor. It has a long V neck stopping just short of my mam's breasts. The sleeves like the dress flowed down to the floor. She wore bright red lipstick and beige and gold eyeshadow. Her midnight black eyelashes were caked with mascara. Her hair was curled and tied into a ponytail.
I lifted my hands to my neck and fixed the slightly bent collar.
Before one of the witches could even knock on the door my mam opened it.
Everyone in the coven is dressed up, no clue why though it is just dinner.
Right?
" Welcome come on in." My mam announced as they began to file in.
Lizzie as always was the first to come in, followed by Maxine. In covens and clans, the leaders must be shown the utmost respect. This is done by letting them in first, first to hunt, first to the food, and so on. I know it's to show respect but sometimes it is really annoying.
" What are you thinking about. No, let me guess, you are thinking that even though you are powerful Naomi is a far better familiar witch than you. It would make sense since I think about that all the time." Naomi smirked.
Naomi is the only one whose dress has more than one colour. Like everyone else, it flows to the floor, but hers is red at the bottom and gold at the top. It doesn't have any sleeves but it connects around her neck, flowing gracefully around her chest and waist. She wore gold and silver eyeshadow and black mascara. Her hair was tied in a neat bun and her lips were rose gold. She wore a gold chain and matching gold earrings.
Even though Naomi annoys the crap out of me sometimes even I have to admit she is beautiful.
" No, I wouldn't think of myself as lower than you in any way. But I can't stop you from trying to make yourself feel better." I smirked.
" Dickhead." She hissed causing her mam to smack the back of her head.
" Watch your language." Veronica growled then walked away.
" Yeah Naomi watch your language." I snickered.
" I hate you." She huffed.
" Okay everybody follow me to the dining room and we can indulge ourselves in the glorious meal I have prepared for this evening."
Damn my mam is even talking fancy tonight.
The dining room is the one room in the house my mam and I never really use. But with all the dust and rats in the room, you wouldn't really want to use it.
But I was shocked by how elegant it looked. My mam obviously used some spells for this.
Every surface was dust-free and polished. The large mahogany table was covered with gold cloth and candles. Placed around the candles were silver platters stacked with roasted vegetables, chicken, and loaves of bread. The mixture of aromas is like heaven for my nose and soon my tastebuds.
Thirteen silver plates and glasses filled with wine were paced around the table.
" Damn sis you really know how to clean up." My aunt gasped making her way to her seat beside my mam.
My aunt always chose an elegant and slightly bold dress. Like all the others it is black and trails to the floor. Her sleeves are long and netted. The dress fits snuggly around her figure and has a slit at the bottom showing her legs. She wore black heels to match. Her hair was loose and she wore blood-red lipstick and silver eyeshadow.
My mam took her place at the head of the table. My aunt sat beside her on the right and I took a seat next to my mam on the left. The rest of the coven just sat wherever they wanted.
"Let's dig in!" My mam announced and like a pack of wild dogs we dug in, scooping big portions of the food.
The meal was absolutely delicious. I stayed quiet while I ate while the rest of the coven engaged in small talk.
" Want to get out of here?" Naomi whispered to me.
" Yeah."
" May Tobias and I be excused?" Naomi asked my mam.
" Of course." My mam replied.
The coven fell silent as Naomi and I got up and left the room.
I took her out to the oak tree. We sighed as we sunk to the floor. As I touched the ground the grass began to wither again.
" Does this happen every time you sit down?" Naomi chuckled plucking some of the dead from the ground, twisting it between her fingers.
" For as long as I can remember." I sighed.
" Must be amazing to be so powerful."
" It has its perks, not that you would know about that." I smirked.
" You fucking prick."
" Watch your language." I growled doing my best imitation of her mam.
" Sorry, mom." She chuckled.
We fell into silence, just watching Halin and Lily fly around.
" They want us to get married."
" What?" I scrunched my eyebrows together.
" The coven, they want us to get married. That's why your mom was okay with us going off together. My mom says they think we will make a powerful child." Naomi explained.
" I wish they would give that stupid idea up." I growled.
" I don't think they will. They crave the power that will come from it."
" Well unlucky for them they won't be getting any power from us." I shook my head.
And once again we fell into silence.
" Do you ever wish you weren't a witch?" Naomi asked as she looked down at her hands.
" So I could be a puny mortal and live a boring life, fuck no," Just with those words the light went out of Namoi's eyes. She seemed very disappointed by my answer," do you think about that?"
" Oh, no It was just a random question. It's getting late we should get back." She faltered.
We got up and slowly made our way back to my house. As we walked I started to wonder why Naomi would ask me that question. I also thought about her answer. Was it something she thinks about and if so then why?
I personally have never thought about what my life could be like if I didn't have my powers. I guess I would live in the village, probably go to church and grow up to be a blacksmith.
When we reached the house the coven was getting ready to leave.
" See you tomorrow." Naomi mumbled as she and the coven left.
After my mam locked the door she turned to me with a hard stare.
" What's wrong?" I asked.
" Lizzie told me that you have been having visions."
Fuck!
" So?" I shrugged.
" What are they about?"
" Nothing major, just that our coven will be the most feared coven in the world."
I could tell that my mam didn't accept my answer.
" Did you borrow my book for the vision stopper?"
" Yeah, but I decided not to take the potion."
" Fine." She sighed turning around and going down to the library.
A small part of me knew my mam didn't really believe my lies, but that is a problem for another day.
