Chapter 16: A New Sister
A Week Later...
Elvira had just finished preparing a breakfast of toasted bread, scrambled eggs and tea and was about to set the table when she felt a sudden kick.
"Awch!"
As if a bowling ball landed on her spine. The sweat drops from her face tickled into her ears, but Elvira didn't mind wiping it off.
Luckily, it was Saturday. Jeremy rushed out of the kitchen to meet her.
"What's going on, my love? He asked, and looked at her legs. Just then, he discovered that her water has just broken. She held her belly, like a heavy load that would drop off at anytime.
"Just stay here, okay?" He gave her a peck before rushing upstairs to get his car keys and the baby luggage.
"Auuch! My back." A soft groan escaped her. Elvira applied pressure on her back and closed her eyes to the overwhelming pain.
Jeremy sprinted to her as he hanged the bag on his shoulder and wrapped his right arm around her waist. Everything was useless right now. She shakes with a sob and trembles.
"Walk with me, okay? And breath gently." Jeremy begged.
"I'm trying." She muttered as she placed her hand on her forehead and leaned against him. Gradually, the couple reached out to the door and got into their silver Ford Focus car and zoomed in the hospital's direction.
The pain came in waves and she was in the middle of a contraction when a new one would start. All of her focus was on the pain.
Immediately they arrived at the hospital, they admitted Elvira into the labour room while a nurse asked Jeremy to wait at the reception center. It took a while, though. He waited and hoped for safe delivery.
Thirty minutes later, the doctors walked out of the ward and one walked to where Jeremy was sitting.
"How is my wife?" Jeremy asked with worry written all over his face. For some reasons, he felt they were out too early. He couldn't help but to notice the seriousness in their eyes.
"She's fine. Both mother and child are doing great. Your wife gave birth to a beautiful baby girl. Congratulations, sir." the doctor stretched out his right hand for a handshake.
"Thanks so much, doctor Frank!" Jeremy unexpectedly gave the doctor a tight hug before he realized. Then he was and gently pulled away.
"Oh Jeez! I'm now a father! When can I meet my wife and daughter?" He asked, placing his hands over his mouth in excitement.
"Just wait a bit. The nurses are cleaning up the place. They'd call you in whenever they're through. Excuse me, sir." The doctor bowed before leaving. Jeremy held in the welling tears of joy as he watched the doctor walked into another ward.
Later, Diane walked in with Damon. Since Mrs. Julia passed, young Damon spend his weekend with Diane, his aunt.
Entering the ward, Damon sprinted towards Elvira. Come here, my son. She carried him to the hospital bed and gave him tight kisses on both cheeks. Damon blushed to her in amazement.
"Guess what?" Elvira started. "You have a baby sister."
"Baby sister?"
"Yes." Elvira smiled and carried the baby towards him so he would get a better view. "Isn't she pretty?"
"But I don't want a baby sister."
Diane and Jeremy busted out in laughter. "Lol! Damon is so funny." Diane choked on her breath.
"You can say that again." Her brother replied. "It takes a lot to put up with him sometimes."
Damon suddenly felt guilty about what he just said. Elvira cupped her hand underneath his chin and stared at him closely.
"You might not need one now, but you'll do, soon. You'll come to love and cherish your sister. Don't you want someone to play with?"
"Of course, I do. But I have someone already."
"Who?" she frowned intensely at what he's about to say while others paid attention.
"My twin sister, Adelaide."
Everyone gave him a smuggle look, knowing he's been mixing things up.
"Adelaide is your mum, okay?" Elvira corrected. "And she's dead."
"She is my twin sister. We play all the time in my dreams." He explained while others glared at him with awkward faces.
Of course, Elvira told no one about Adelaide's last confession of being a witch. She never believed it, she didn't want to. But right now, Damon is acting so absurd that they just kept quiet, watching him.
Damon inspected the new baby and smiled. "What's her name?"
"I'm thinking we should call her Julia." Elvira suggested.
"No, no, no... Nobody is bearing someone else's name, darling!" Jeremy corrected. Imagine the young boy calling his sister, his mother's name, when he's bearing his father's name and surname. Isn't that a lifetime punishment?" He sighed to his wife and Diane intervened.
"I agree with you, brother."
"But Julia was a good woman. She was just faced with different circumstances, that was why..." Elvira was trying to make him see the reason she picked the name, but Jeremy interrupted.
"If you don't mind, I have a beautiful name for our daughter."
Diane and Elvira raised their brows at him as if asking what the name was.
"Ava Dior."
"Wow, cool name." Diane smiled. "Ava Dior."
The three adults in the room were smiling from ear to ear, except for Damon who was looking a little moody. Of course, he didn't want a little sister. Not now or ever. Or maybe he just didn't feel the need to have one.
"Why do you look so moody, Damon?"
"I don't know... I miss grandma."
Elvira's smile dropped as she handed the baby to Jeremy. She looked back at Damon and pulled closer to him.
"Let me tell you something. All endings are also beginnings. For we just font know it." She muttered.
"What does it mean?" he raised his eyebrows to her in puzzlement.
"It mean, we need to be grateful for what we have. Your mum and dad gave up their lives for you, right?"
"Yes, they're my superheros!"
"Exactly. Grandma left and you're blessed with a sister. Shouldn't that make you happy?" She caresses his black, shiny hair gently.
"Of course... I should." He answered drily, even though he didn't know what it meant yet.
"Good." she replied and turned to Jeremy with a serious expression. "When are we getting discharged?"
"The doctor said in two hours' time. We should get ready to leave." Jeremy muttered as they continued their conversation.
In these, Damon got lost. He somehow felt their love for him will reduce. He watched them discussing till they fell asleep.
The garden was beautiful with various flowers. Damon wet himself lying beside his twin sister, Adelaide.
"You look so worried. Young Adelaide started. Is it because of your new sister?
"How do you know?" A frown formed on his cute face.
"I'm a witch, remember? I know everything. Your thoughts and your wishes. I am you and you are me." She smiled, hoping he would smile too, but he didn't.
"Then I guess you already know why I don't want a baby sister."
"I know you already have me, but Ava Dior would be different. I am your friend and soul mate, Damon. Ava Dior is your sister."
"You are my sister. No one can take that from you. I just hope they don't love her over me. It's not as if I care." He picked up a sunflower and threw it away in disgust.
"You'll always be loved and treated equally." She persuades as they locked eyes with each other. "Are you having problems with mathematics?"
"Of course, I do. I still can't get a sum right."
"Come, I'd teach you." She pulled him up and led him to a beach around the garden. She picked up a stick and drew a straight line. This is one.
"One." He replied.
"Two, three, four." She pointed to the figures as she wrote it in the golden sand.
"Four."
"Five, six, seven and eight."
"Eight." he replied, attentively.
"This is nine, and this is ten."
She wrote the numbers in figures.
"Number ten. Now I grab." He turned to her with a smile and they both hugged each other.
"You are my best friend in the world, Adelaide." Damon muttered, staring into his twin sister's blue eyes.
"Whenever you need me. Just close your eyes and I'd come to you. She said, placing her lips on his as they shared an intense kiss.
"Damon! Damon!!" a voice called. Listening, they realized it was from reality.
"Elvira is calling you. I guess it's time for dinner."
"I'd miss you." He whined.
"We'd meet again in an hour. But before you leave. Your homework is being done." She said to him as he bade her and faded instantly.
Waking, Damon rubbed his sleepy eyes with the reel of his hand. He yawned lazily as he faced Elvira.
"Mum."
"You haven't eaten since noon. Come on, let's go." She pulled him out of bed.
"I'm not hungry, mum." Damon cried as he wiped his sleepy eyes.
