Chapter 3

As I regained consensus I gasped for air. I have had two houses burn down in my short life of 13 years. Glancing around me I could see cave walls and the silver dragonborn was packing back and forth at the entrance of the cave.

"Why is he hunting her? What does she have for him to send Monique after her," he was mumbling to himself as he talked.

Not thinking he would hear me I asked, "Who sent the notes?"

This got their attention, "Notes?"

"Yeah notes. There were two, maybe three notes that appeared at my house before my family died."

This caused them to wince, "Uh, well I have an idea, but you might not like it."

"Okay well tell me that and tell me what to call you," I grumbled.

"Call me an Ancheint one, he/him pronouns"

"Great, Ancient one. What do you know about the notes?"

"So there's this lady who is older than me by at least a hundred years. She is the eyes of a vampire, who freed her from her mess. While the vampire is a very good person, she is a little more, uh, chaotic. I am pretty sure that she put the notes thereto, uh, mess with you."

I stared at the Ancient one. There was a lady who messed with people for laughs? If this was true then she knew that my family was going to die and she probably knew who did it.

"So I need to find this lady," I groaned looking up at him.

"Yeah, about that," he started

"There's more!"

"Yes, uh, her name is Alkatraz and no one knows where she is at any given point," the end of his last statement raised in pitch like it was a question.

"You've got to be kidding me."

"No, but I was planning to train you to protect yourself and whatever it is that he wants, so you will learn to portal hop, safer than Sova that is."

My eyes grew wide, "who's he, and what is portal hoping?"

"Portal hoping is traveling between worlds in the universe."

"The universe? So the prophecy is true?"

The silence that filled the air was penetrable with a dagger. I couldn't help but notice how he avoided who he was that the Ancient one referred to and the entire topic of the prophecy was avoided. Who was the Ancient one and why did he choose me?

As the year dragged on I learned that you could use magic through song. The day after learning about bards I awoke to the Ancient one not being in the cave. He had always told me that I couldn't leave the cave so I didn't. It wasn't that I didn't have the chance, because I did, but since I had nowhere else to go so I didn't leave.

"Oh, Liver! I heard you were nearby," I heard what sounded like Monique call from the entrance of the cave.

Looking around I quickly ran around the corner and climbed up into the Ancient one's sleeping area and crawled into the back of the cavern and tried to blend in. I watched as Monique crept from corner to corner of the cave with the creepy smile that she had.

"I think your really pretty Liver and I think you should leave your teacher and come with me and lend a helping hand to both me and the Shadow demon," Monique stated.

I couldn't help but wince and try to push back farther into the wall behind me. When will the Ancient one be back? I couldn't help but think. Once the Ancient one returned I wouldn't be as uncomfortable and in as much trouble. However, I don't know when he would return. Suddenly Monique turned around and spotted where I was.

"You thought that you could hide from me forever Liver," Monique asked as she crept up.

I fervently shook my head and held my breath. Monique grinned and started to climb into the cavern that I was hiding in. Slowly she crept forward with that same creepy grin that had been on her face the entire time that I had known her. The moment that she reached me she snuck an arm around me and I was unable to fight back due to the fear that had sunk into me.

"Liver! I'm back," The Ancient one called.

Monique glanced down at me still grinning and put her pointer finger up to her mouth, but that wouldn't stop me. As I was about to scream Monique said, "I suggest that you stay silent."

As I tried to scream, nothing would come out of my mouth. When I say nothing I mean absolutely nothing. So when The Ancient one came around the corner and Monique started to talk again.

"Worman, I have her and she is coming with me, you can't protect her and you can't stop me," Monique's monolog, was quickly coming to an end, and neither me nor who I figured Monique called Worman could do anything about it.

With the end of her monolog, a whooshing sound appeared behind us. My eyes grew wide, What is behind me? I wondered, but the look on the Ancient one's face did not help with my confidence. As Monique's arm tightened around me I could feel all hope of ever seeing the Ancient one ever again draining from me. As Monique dragged me backward I broke out from the spell that kept me silent before.

In an attempt to not be taken away I said words that would haunt anyone who heard them, "Help me Ancient one! Please, please don't let her take me."

I watched as The Ancient one's expression broke. He collapsed with a sob as Monique pulled me back into the wall. I closed my eyes, feeling a tear slide down my cheek as I let the dark and cold envelope me.
