Chapter 10

The four of them had taken Sitwell off the roof and all of them were now in Sam's car on the way to the SHIELD headquarters.

"Hydra doesn't like leaks." Sitwell told them.

"Then why don't you try sticking a cork in it." Sam said from the driver's seat. Steve was shotgun and Nat and Abi were in the back with Sitwell.

"Insights launching in sixteen hours." Natasha reminded them. "We're cutting it a little bit clos here."

"I know. We'll use him," Steve gestured to Sitwell. "to bypass the DNA scans and access the helicarrier's directly."

"What? Are you crazy?" Sitwell exclaimed. "That is a terrible, terrible idea."

Suddenly there was a thud on the roof and a metal arm came through the window and grabbed hold of Sitwell. The soldier pulled him out and threw him into the traffic going the other way. He screamed but was cut off as he was hit by a truck. Abi pushed Nat into the front using her powers as a bullet landed where her head had been. Nat then pulled Steve forward as another bullet went flying into the head rest.

"He's got orders to kill you but keep me alive." Abi said. "That's all I can see... He can't seem to remember much else." She informed them in confusion. Abi pulled Sam's head to the side as another bullet came flying in.

Sam slammed on the brakes and the soldier went flying off the roof of the car. He caught himself skilfully and used his metal hand to stop; the effort making grooves in the concrete. The four of them still in the car looked on as the soldier got to his feet a mask and a pair of glasses observing his face. Natasha raised her gun to shoot as another car slammed into the back of Sam's and pushed them forward. Nat dropped her gun with the movement and attempted to retrieve it. Sam attempted to steer as they reached the soldier but he jumped back onto the roof; his metal hand denting the cars body work. Sam once again hit the brakes but the momentum of the car behind them kept them moving. Just after the soldier punched through the cars roof and pulled out the steering wheel.

"Shit!" Sam shouted as the soldier jumped onto the car behind them.

The car began to swerve from side to side uncontrollably. The car behind them gave them a nudge and the car hit the barrier and started to flip. Steve looked to Abi who nodded and shielded herself with her powers as Steve grabbed Nat and Sam, told them to hang on, and broke off the car door. The three of them hit the street and began to slide as the other car and the soldier went straight past. Sam fell off and rolled to a stop as Nat and Steve kept skidding. In the car itself Abi hit her head and momentarily lost consciousness.

The other car stopped and a man handed the soldier a grenade launcher. He took aim at Nat and Steve and fired. Steve pushed Nat to the side and held up his shield. However, the power of the blast sent Steve flying off the bridge, onto the street below and into a bus which crashed. The soldier and the other men kept shooting at Nat and Sam; advancing on their position. Nat crossed onto the other side of the road and ran behind a car for cover. However, the soldier sent a grenade at the car and he blasted it off the bridge.

Nat went over with the car but once under the bridge shot a grappling hook to the underside and hit the ground running. She stopped, however, when she saw the soldier's shadow waiting for her with a gun pointed over the edge. The soldier aimed for where Steve was but Nat shot from under the bridge. She hit the right side of his glasses which caused him to remove them. In anger he looked over the edge of the bridge and sprayed the area with bullets.

Nat had moved and once again shot at him from further off. He aimed at her again and she began to run. A smirk tugged upon her lips as she did so; this was a race to the death and she was loving every minute.

"I have her. Find him and the other girl but keep her alive." The soldier said to his men in Russian.

Abi was beginning to regain consciousness and watched as the soldier jumped from the bridge to chase after Nat. Abi tried to move but her leg was stuck under the crumpled metal of the car. She got free and gestured to Sam to take out the men on the bridge as she used her powers to fly from the bridge. She hit the floor and winced as her leg crumpled under her. She watched the soldier go after Nat as she felt her leg start to heal.

From here she properly looked at him. He walked slightly slanted to the left and she realised that his arm must be heavier than it looked and was dragging him down slightly. His ragged brown hair was clean but un-kept; as though he didn't know what to do with it. There was also something familiar about him. He held himself the way she was told to; he fought like she did and moved with the same stealth. She realised her earlier conclusion had been right and that they were in fact trained together. However, this also proved Zola to be right. She really was one of Hydra's monsters.

As her leg healed she finally started running again. Steve was busy with the other men who were shooting at him and Sam was on the bridge meaning she would have to tackle the soldier. When she reached him and Nat she noticed that Nat was bleeding from the shoulder. The soldier was stood on the bonnet of a car and was aiming at her for a kill shot.

Abi yanked his legs out from under him using her powers. He spun around and immediately turned his attention to her. He shot at her but she ducked out of the way. She ran at him and disarmed him of the machine gun. He brought his metal arm up and managed to punch her in the jaw but she only stumbled back wiping the blood off her lip. She used her powers to throw a piece of scrap at him before landing a kick in his lower abdomen. He doubled over and when she went to kick him again he grabbed her foot and swung her into the side of a nearby van. She gasped for breath as the air left her lungs. She was unable to stop the metal hand that closed around her throat.

The impact on the side of the van had knocked her necklace out of her shirt and the soldier's eyes caught the glint of the diamond ring. His eyes widened and his grip slackened giving Abi the chance to knee him in the groin and push him backwards. A moment of confusion passed through Abi's mind before she hit the answer she didn't want. She froze. They both stood there for a moment before his eyes went cold and he once again pushed her back into the side of the van. Abi found herself frozen and unable to fight as she looked into those all too familiar blue-green eyes. The eyes that once held such warmth but had now been corrupted by the frozen glare they now held.

She was helpless as he slammed a needle into her neck. She went limp beneath him as she collapsed to her knees in agony. Just then Steve slammed into the soldier and started fighting him in hand to hand combat. Abi reached a hand up to her neck; the other going to the floor to stop her falling completely. She took the hand off her neck and tried to use her powers but they began to fade away. All the voices of the people around her's thoughts began to disappear. She finally realised that this had happened before; that the injection took away her powers. The pain dyed down slightly and she stumbled to her feet and headed towards Steve. She reached him the moment he flipped the soldier.

The soldier's mask hit the floor and he stood and turned to them. All of her fears came true at that exact moment as she looked upon the face of the man she loved; the man she had agreed to marry.

"Bucky?" She said almost like a prayer as her voice audibly cracked. Steve glanced at her before back to the man he had once called his best friend.

"Who the hell is Bucky?" Bucky asked looking at her in confusion before raising his gun and aiming at Steve.

Sam quickly intervened and kicked Bucky in the head sending him to the floor. He quickly regained his footing and once again locked his aim on Steve. This time however, he hesitated and gave Nat a chance to send a shot that went right past his head. The next time they all looked he was gone. This was when the pain from the injection and the pain from resurfacing memories became too much for Abi and she hit the floor. As she lost consciousness she saw the strike team coming at them guns raised and ready to arrest them. She let her vision fade to black as once again instead of dreams her memories began to haunt her.
