The winner loses it all
It was a gentle yet noisy autumn afternoon, the sun was shining just right. The air rustled the withered leaves swaying from bench to bench, the grass was no longer green. Children running around hustled over the blanket of flowers and leaves. He could watch right from the middle but his senses were numb like one sinking deeper and deeper into the stream of ice. Loud thuds of past life events flashed before his eyes.
"Nolyn.... Nolyn, is that you?" the voice deafened & faded.
12x+2xy+30y=?
"YES!!" he exclaimed, solving the equation in no time. Harper passed him an unamused glance.
"Hmmm. Of course you're right again."
"Babe I am always right." Nolyn victorious, raised the collar of his starched Armani shirt passing her a look over his shoulder. "Never doubt me. I'm the Monarch of all the things that I set my sight on." He locked a look at his Rolex and got up quickly. "Got to go baby. Uncle Sam will be here any moment and you know how much I hate being late." His blue orbs winked and with a quick kiss on her cheek he dashed away.
"But Nol...." Her heart skipped a thousand beats enraptured by the scent of Hermes yet couldn't help the worry lines on her forehead.
Nolyn Archer Smith with his gorgeous dreamy eyes and jet black hair was the son of the richest businessman in the town. 6'1 already, broad shouldered a boy of perfection and unfaltering masculinity. Chiseled chin, dramatic jawline and when he smiled ahh took a million hearts away. At the age of 18 he had the ideal boyish looks and a charm that wooed everyone. He was pretty content with his life. A happy family, perfect grades and a beautiful girlfriend by his side. Everything was picture perfect that little did he know it lead his ego climb a few notches higher than the rest. Nolyn loved to brag about his oh so perfect life. He always found a way to let people know that he was better than everyone else.
"Good heavens!! Finally my superhero Uncle is here!! How are you?" Nolyn greeted his uncle enthusiastically by shaking his hand and giving him a side hug.
"Well well well here comes my favorite boy. I'm good my son. How are you keeping and coping? What's going on? How's school?" Uncle Samuel also greeted back warmly and stormed with questions.
"School couldn't be any better. It's awesome! Guess who took the distinguished student award this year?" His eyes gleamed and sparkle of pride sprinkled off his bod.
"Why do I have any doubts!? Of course you sonny!!" Uncle Sam responded unquestioned.
"Yeahhh and not only this I'm certain that I will be picked as the valedictorian for the graduation ceremony. I mean how could I not?" Nolyn bragged with a smug grin on his face.
"Well done my boy!" Uncle Sam patted Nolyn on the back. "You did a fantastic job by showing those kids that you aren't just anyone ordinary like them, you are the Baguette of Smiths Family, the nephew of Samuel Jackson Smith! The next in line of our empire and I couldn't be any less proud" he praised him further.
Nolyn's eyes filled with excitement of embarking on a journey of lifetime soon, this is what he was built on. He was 'THE Perfect' drifted into his kingdom of riches, sitting on his throne.
"And what about girls huh? Got any special lady?" Nolyn was snapped and interrupted back into the present, his cheeks turned red upon hearing that and bells of joy rang in his heart.
"Yeah I do." Replied sheepishly "Her name is Harper, an amazing girl she is." He told with a lasting smile on his face.
Harper Mary James. The one person I love more than anything in the world Harper is as beautiful as a Hollywood star. Her thick, wavy, long brown hair gracefully falls down to her shoulders and encircles her diamond-shaped face. A golden suntan usually brings out her smooth, clear complexion and high cheek bones. Her slightly arched chestnut brown eyebrows highlight her emotions by moving up and down as she reacts to her world around her. Her large cat green eyes, reminds me of a lake on a stormy day. Her curved nose gives her a little girl look that makes me want to smile when she talks. And her mouth is a small mouth outlined by puffy lips that she often accentuates with glossy pink lipstick. When she smiles, which is often, her well-formed and even, white teeth brighten up her whole face. I guess you can tell that I am head over heels in love with Harper, My Harper.
With the passage of time Uncle Sam's words influenced Nolyn in more ways than one. He distanced himself from his friends. His ego skyrocketed which led him to believe that he was better than the people he spent his time with. All he could think was that he had the riches and the looks. No one will ever be able to beat him.
"Hey babe" Nolyn greeted his girlfriend with a peck on her lips as he sat beside her in the library. "What are you doing in the library at this time?" he asked as he noticed her tired eyes.
"Studying for the finals and shouldn't you be doing the same thing?" she asked eyeing him curiously.
"I don't have to. I already know that I'm going to ace" a smirk evident on his face.
"Of course you will because obviously you're better than everyone else in the class, aren't you?" sarcasm clear in her voice as she rolled her eyes.
"Hey! What's with the tone?" he looked at her, offended.
"Oh god Nolyn! You need to understand that you cannot just go around flaunting your riches or your looks or your IQ. It is a very insensible thing to do" she glared at him.
"Well it's not my fault that they can't even be half as good as I am. Can we like not talk this, it's giving me a headache."
"Fine. Whatever." She herself was too tired to continue this pointless conversation.
As the finals neared everyone indulged themselves in studies. After two intense weeks of finals the results came out. Nolyn, of course, secured 1st position boasting his pride even more. Before everyone knew it graduation day arrived. It was a very emotional day as the graduates gave their speeches. Parents shed tears as they saw their kids growing and moving on to the next level.
"Finally done with school huh?" Nolyn whispers in Harper's ear as he sneaks up behind her wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
Smiling, she turns around in his arms and places a kiss on his cheek.
"Yup. Is it weird that I'm feeling really excited yet extremely sad?"
"No it's completely natural. I'm going to miss school as well although I am really excited to start a new chapter in my life with you by my side."
Smiling down at her, he places a feathery kiss to her lips.
"I can't wait either" she says, beaming at him.
"How about we go and have a celebratory dinner with our families and then tonight we can go somewhere nice?"
"Are you asking me out on a DATE?" she smiles coyly at him.
"Oh I most definitely am" he smirks at her, making her giggle.
"See you tonight then Nolyn Archer Smith."
"I'll be counting on it Harper Mary James."
Harper stands in front of the mirror as thoughts about tonight invade her mind. Staring at herself, dressed in her favorite green mid length dress. She smiled to herself as she thought how much Nolyn would love her wearing a dress that accentuates her eyes. Her hair tied up in a neat bun enhanced her long neck. Swarovski earrings dangled from her ears, as they shone whenever the light hit them. The look was completed with minimal nude makeup and nude heels. Her face lit up with a bright smile as she thought about Nolyn's behavior at school today. He seemed so sweet and lovely. He didn't seemed like the arrogant and egotistical person he had turned into. Maybe she had finally got her Nolyn back. The one who cared about others feelings and didn't bring them down whenever he got the chance. The one who didn't care whether someone met his standards.
After having a wonderful dinner at the famous French restaurant in town, Harper and Nolyn decided to take a little walk. Hand in hand they walked under the moonlight as the cool breeze blew past their faces. It truly was a beautiful night, especially for the happy couple. Engulfed by the bliss around them Harper rested her head on Nolyn's shoulder.
"Thank you for the dinner. I really enjoyed today." Harper snuggled into Nolyn's side as he wrapped an arm around her shoulder.
"I had loads of fun too. We should do this more often you know cause once we start university it's going to get hectic." Nolyn said as he looked down at her.
She looked breath taking. Her cheeks and nose had turned rosy due to the chilly breeze that surrounded them. A small smile played on her lips as she looked at the ground. Boy was he lucky that he had her by his side.
"Yeah we should." Looking ahead he saw the place that they first met. The town's bowling alley, "How about we make this night a lot more fun by going to the place we first met."
The bowling alley was buzzing with music as most of the school kids were gathered at the arcade to celebrate the day. The tiesto remix version of 'All of me' by John Legend started playing. Harper and Nolyn looked at each other and whispered "our song" simultaneously causing them to smile.
"Why don't you go ahead and find a free lane and I'll go get something to drink" Nolyn said. Harper headed towards the lanes when she heard a commotion behind her.
"YOU MORON!! WHAT THE HECK HAVE YOU DONE. YOU RUINED MY DOLCE JACKET."
It was his all-time favorite pull on, he specially flew all the way to Italy a week back to grab the exclusive edition. "I'm really sorry dude"
"YOU'RE SORRY!!!" Nolyn scoffed at his apology. "You just ruined a jacket that probably costs more than your entire existence!! Oh what would you know about being classy." Nolyn stared at him in utter disgust.
"Hey man just because you're a rich jerk doesn't mean everyone is going to tolerate you." The guy stormed away. Harper dragged Nolyn outside the club.
"What was that Nolyn? You acted like such a stuck up person."
"ME!! He ruined my jacket"
"It was JUST a jacket honey...don't you see this?" Harper almost yelled back
"Seriously Harper!! You think this was just a jacket?! I VALUE everything I own! This is my world! Everything should go my way!"
A moment of sorrow, shatter and heartbreak resulted for Harper. She felt she was never there and now she knew what should have been done length back.
"That's it Nolyn I can't do this any longer. I'm sorry I really love you but you've changed and I can't stay with this new you. I need to move on." AND Harper left.
"Babe wait" He called out but to the empty street.
Ever since that day Nolyn's life took a huge turn. His mother was ailing a terminal disease. His mother lost the battle & he lost her. Their riches couldn't save her. His father indebted every penny and brought huge damage to the business causing them to loose many luxuries. Within a little time Nolyn lost his caring, supportive girlfriend, his loving mother and his tough father.
Trembling, shook from the pool of past when he saw Harper in that park calling out his name, all he had was a burden of regrets to drown in.
