Prologue

She walks along the snowy fields, each step creating footprints that are quickly swept away by the wind. It howls around her like a roaring beast. Despite this, her hood remains firmly over her head and her hair lies still against her shoulder. Her robes brush against the pale snow without being blown as far as the wind could carry it. She is covered head to toe in her ivory regalia, but it seems too thin for it to protect her against the freezing temperature. She does not appear to be affected by the falling snow, the flakes somehow missing her. She may be walking through the thickest parts of the storm, but she is unaffected by it all. She remains steady as she walks forward, unflinchingly against the icy sharpness of the weather. She holds herself firm with a higher purpose, her light green eyes glowing in the pale white of her surroundings.

She stops moving when she comes to the edge of the storm. Unlike natural weather, there is a visible cut-off between where the storm lies siege on the land and where the wind has found a way to protect itself. She stands beside the enormous pillars of wind, so thick that they appear to take on the green shading of Anemo, the elemental force of the world responding to air and movement. She places her hand against the energy, watching as the winds slightly part for her fingers. They dare not scrap the skin from her hand as they would for any other creature demanding to enter or exit the large walls. As the wind parts, she can see the remnants of civilization, an entire group of humans stashed away behind Anemo walls and stone towers.

She lowers her hand away from the Anemo instead of pressing further into the mortal realm hidden away in the northern corner of the known world. She turns away from the wind, looking at the creature that followed her. She smiles softly as the tiny wisp flutters off-balance in the air behind her, its tiny wings struggling to keep it in place as the wind tries to drag it away. She raises her hand to it, and the wind shuffles around her body and the wisp. The elemental twirls in the air before lowering itself into her hand, pressing the hood of its cloak into her fingers as a sign of gratitude. She smiles fondly at her companion, bringing it closer to her chest.

"I believe I requested that you wisps stay at the temple, safely guarded from this storm. Why must you act outside of the norm?" She asks her companion. Despite how booming the wind sounds, her voice carries across the small bubble she created, as smooth as glass and as firm as mountains. "You have also been the most curious about mortals. Can you not be content with knowing all there is about the immortals?"

The wisp does not reply, remaining still in her hand. Its wide, white eyes staring up at her unblinkingly. It waited patiently for her to sigh, turning the both of them towards the Anemo wall. "Humans are weak creatures of finite time. Despite this, they live such complex and enriching lives. They may revere the divine, but they do not cower before it. They believe in their own intelligence and strength. I adore them very much, you see. I watch over them as they make decisions and choices that will allow them to find happiness. Some look for love, others search for success. Some want power, others wish for peace. They are all so different from one another, so passionate about their own desires that they always amaze and entertain me. The ones beyond this wall have found themselves trapped in the conflict between Decaborian, a god of storms, and Andrius, a god of winter. They are battling for a throne in Celestia, the heavenly seats instilled into this world by Phane."

The wisp lifts up from her hand. It draws closer to the Anemo power surrounding the city. It does not touch the Anemo like she did, but it draws much closer than any human would ever dare. It floats a little higher, attempting to see what is beyond the wall. She smiles thoughtfully as she watches the wisp. "Do you wish to see what is beyond this wall and learn what it means to be a human? They are creatures very much different from you; they will teach you and they will learn from you. I will warn you that not all humans are good, and many will leave you when you are not ready. I will not stop you if you wish to go, and I will not force you if you wish to remain outside."

The wisp hesitates, never looking back. She has spoken words similar to this before. When he was first created, a simple breeze that collected a little too much Anemo, she had taken him in as one of her many winds. She taught him very much about the world. She told him about the First Who Came, Phane, and his four shining shades, including her. She taught him about the elements and how the thrones in Celestia were going to protect this natural power. She taught him about the world tree, Irminsul, and about the many lands that stretched from one edge of the Dark Sea to the opposing shore. Her most important lesson, however, was one about the greatest gift that could be given to any creature: freedom. She gave the wisp the right to do as it pleased. It chose to stay with her, but now it could choose to explore something she could never teach him, something only humans could.

"I will always be with you, little one. Do not worry about leaving me behind. I am the wind that will always return. I am the grains of sand that do not fall. I am time, all around you, the embrace of the past and future around the present," She told him softly, her tone kind as she drew her hands apart. The Anemo wall split apart like a curtain sliding open. The wisp hesitated at the entrance. It turned around once to look at her. She continued to smile at it. The wisp turned back around, darting into the hidden city. The Anemo walls closed back behind it before it could change its mind.
