The Calm Before the Storm

"The sun is veiled," Smaug grunted from my side as we watched the great jewel of the sky shimmer beneath the thin layer of ever-coming clouds.

"I know there's often a sign here that something is going to happen," I said, growing increasingly suspicious. Ever since those maggots left three weeks ago, there's been something wrong with our realm. It's dark, like a shadow has shrouded us all.

Dragons are more snappy at each other, putting their fear and anger on someone else. Our king and queen are trying to get them under control again, but it isn't easy when a kingdom full of aggravated dragons is trying to calm down.

Smaug let his wing wrap aorund my form, showing me that I was safe, at least for now.

"Well, you know that I will always be by your side whatever comes, love. You have me, Darkstalker, and the weird dragonets too." I smiled at his trying to calm my heart, but it was doing little. I knew better than to relax before a storm. It wasn't good to lay away all your worries when the storm would break on your doorstep.

So with that, I turned back and shirthed into the mountain, my One following me and the rest of the tribe that had been outside to get some air and clear their thoughts. It seemed to help them somewhat. They were less angry, but I could feel their anger through the constant flow of smoke from their nares.

It spoils the normal Desde air in the mountains, but what could I do? When dragons get angry, we generate smoke, ice, or something showing our emotions better than words.

"Ah, Dazyn! Come, it's time for the king and queen to answer," Darkstalker chirped as we approached him. I noticed how Smaug rolled his eyes, but his tolerance for getting ignored by the black dragon had grown, and they had been more friends than not.

I smiled at the Nightwing, giving him a soft muzzle against his chin before I sat down, listing to our rulers.

Princess Greatness looked down her snout at the black dragons in front of her.

They were smaller than her species and had weird dorsal plates on their back, and even stranger, they didnt even have horns. Well, there were, in fact, only one black dragon and a group of others. It was no surprise that Greatness saw the black dragon first and wanted to question him. "send the others back to the quarters. I wish to speak with the black one," she spoke, her voice calm, just like her mother would be.

The IceWing guards nodded, guiding the rest of the dragons to the hallway outside the throne room. Princess Greatness were clad in armor as she was about to leave for the battle that awaited her and her fellow IceWings, but then this group of strange dragons showed up at the island and demanded they had to speak with the queen.

So she had seen no one else fit to be that for her mother. That old rascal was sleeping and never liked to be disturbed, whether it was her daughter or someone else. "now speak," she rumbled now that she and the smaller dragon were alone.

He shuddered under her golden gaze before he straightened up. "I am Toothless the Night Fury. My friends and I come from an island called Berk, but humans overrun it. We wish to speak shelter and perhaps a place in your army simply. I have heard you're going to war. While we hate fighting humans, we can no longer stand them," the Night Fury told her, and Greatness titled her gracious head, her tail thumping.

"oh, is that so? Humans I have never heard of. If you mean those annoying squeaking pests, then I do know. But we call them Scavengers. They are no match for us," she says, lifting her chin. Toothless gives her a surprised look. He knew dragons have their langue but Scavengers as humans were something he had never heard before. Sure they were Scavenging, sometimes raiding dragon hoards and stuff, but he never thought them of something so low.

A tug sparked in his stomach and his thoughts towards Hiccup, his old best friend. It was many years since he had last seen that two legs. He had become the king of the Hidden World and knew that Hiccup had become the chief he deserved to be.

While Toothless didn't want to attack Berk's Vikings, they had no choice. And they could do it themselves, but he had heard something going on on distant shores and got curious. So did his friends. And bam! it led them here.

The NightWing princess sighed before spreading her wings showing the intercalate star pattern. "very well. You are allowed to stay or come with us as you please. as long as you do not interfere with my dragon's business. We have our war to go to, and I do not need weaklings to pamper. Now leave" Toothless bowed his head with an emotionless face knowing that you should never show emotions to a strange ruler, and whirled out of the room, hiding his true happiness.

At least now, he had succeeded with his mission, and he and his friends would soon be flying with the NightWings to a distant kingdom.

What could go wrong?

I watched the sky as the sun started to drizzle her rays across it showing us that somehow we would be fine.

The talons sounded beside me, and I felt a familiar wing brush against mine. I smiled and turned my head to see Darstalker smiling at me. "you're up early," he joked. I sighed, letting him twine our tails together. "I am anxious for what may come. The world is changed. I fear there are seotming that will happen that we have not yet foreseen, and there will be much loss. I try to prepare for all," I said, and Darstalker smiled.

"you know I have the gift of foresight?" he chirped, and I titled my head at him, not knowing this piece of valuable information "no, I do not," I told him, and the dark dragon sighed, his wing claws curling "it is a gift, yes but it is also the reason I lost my first love. Clearsight was her name. I... I was not the dragon she wished me to be, and I failed her... I know this is warfare, and the time might come when this kingdom will fall, but I will not let you fall that I promise you. I cannot make that same mistake again. You have become dear to me, Dazyn, more than you know," he said, and my eyes teared up.

I knew he was fond of me, but since I never knew his backstory and past life, I never knew I meant that much to him. But I wasn't his, and if he had been my One, then things might have been different. "I do not know how this will end, Darstalker, and I am glad you trust me with your secret. Foresight is an exciting thing, but I promise you you'll not fail me. Whatever comes, we will be here for each other. And if not, our souls will find union in the Halls of Estonia. And I will be happy there knowing I died for my kingdom."

Darstkalker smiles at me sadly, tears pooling in his clear ice-black eyes. "I know," he says, and suddenly leans in his snout inches from mine. "and I will always be here for you," and as he closes the distance, sparks fly.

But deep behind us in the opening of our great mountain stands a reddish-golden dragon, his golden eyes lit with a fire hotter than the sun herself. Anger churns in his stomach. His heart breaks, so you were lying, Dazyn? Am I your One? But not waiting for the dragoness of his dreams and the mind-reading backstabber, he turns on his claw heading back into the drinking halls. He has no time to anger over this.

War is coming, the Night will bleed, and the Sun will shine, for this is a fight between darkness and light. A conflict between forces of acient times. A battle between Dragons.

And only Death knows their fate. But so do Life, and they're both waiting to show who has right. And Fate stays with them.

For all will come in Time's wings.
