8. Rude Awakening

The morning sun played across Violet's face, waking her despite resistance. Fluttering eyes fought against the conscious state her entire body wanted to avoid. Her muscles ach ed from lack of movement and the strain of the last few days. A soft groan sounded as she rolled back into the shadows, escaping the sun's reach. Grabbing the sheets and a pillow, she snuggled into the comfortable bed.

Vanilla and something sweet she couldn't quite place saturated the sheets. It had a relaxing effect, but she didn't care about the aroma, only the chance to rest and relax more. The bed was soft with an inviting warmth, and that was all that mattered. She sighed happily in the new position.

The peace shattered at the sound of an amused chuckle from across the room that made her blood run cold as her eyes snapped open. "Planning on sleeping all day, are you, darling? ~ ♥"

Violet gasped and shot into a sitting position, activating her Ten on the instinct of a threat. She located the source of the intrusion, Hisoka, sitting in a large armchair across from the bed. Their eyes met, and an amused smirk coloured his features. She remained tucked within a king bed that pushed against the far corner from the door. A high window allowed sunlight to peak from the gaps of the closed curtain on the wall to Hisoka's left side.

"Good morning. Sleep well? ♥"

The blood that left Violet's face moments ago returned in double the volume. She grabbed the sheets and pulled them towards her chest as extra protection. Mentally she knew it was useless, but the spontaneous action seemed beneficial in her disorientation.

Hisoka's lips curled into a charming smile. "I hope it was comfortable enough~ ♥"

Violet's composure remained distant as she pieced together her situation. The shock of rousing in a foreign space was swiftly replaced with a deep scowl. Her nose wrinkled as her eyes narrowed towards the redhead.

"Hisoka! I specifically recall turning down your offer for a room!"

Hisoka's smirk widened, and he watched her intensely through half-lidded eyes. "Indeed, but my hands were quite tied when you passed out in the middle of the park walkway ♠" He crossed his arms and flipped one leg over the other before sitting back as if they were discussing the weather. "Parks are multi-use spaces, darling. It would have been very inconvenient and rude of you to sleep there for three days. We have to think of other people sometimes, too, hm?"

Anger swelled further as she released a deep breath and ground her teeth. "This isn't a joke, Hiso— What do you mean three days?" Her body tensed, much to the dismay of her aching muscles.

The magician looked away and started shuffling a deck of cards. "You've been in and out of consciousness for nearly three days now."

All Violet could do was blink in response to that information. That long? I've been alone with him for that long?! Hisoka watched her expressions from the corner of his vision as she tried to work through everything. Given the curve on his lips, it was clear how much he enjoyed the situation. She opened her mouth to say something more but stopped, noticing she was in a pink oversized tunic undershirt.

"What happened to my shirt?" Violet flipped the blankets over to ensure the rest of her clothing remained in place, but everything else remained in place, beyond missing shoes. "You changed me?!"

"Hm? You are more than welcome to have the old one back, but I would highly recommend ending its misery. Bloodstains and tearing are one thing, but the extra added touches make it a bit hard to save it at this point."

Violet remained silent. It was all becoming a bit much for her, and there was no rebut for that statement. The shirt was well past its prime now.

Hisoka pointed to the nightstand to her left. "I have a new one for you. You're more than welcome to it. Think of it as a gift~ ♥" A white box sat on the nightstand between the bed and walk-in closet entrance and was donned with an extravagant black ribbon.

That's a bit over the top, she thought before responding, "I don't like being in debt to anyone, Hisoka."

Hisoka's body visibly shuddered when Violet's expression twisted to one of venom, and he lost control momentarily, causing his face to contort with perversion. She pushed her weight backwards on the bed, prepping for an attack but not losing her intensity. She wasn't going to be pushed around by a creepy clown-magician.

After a split second, the magician collected himself and raised a hand over his face as if physically trying to contain the escaping psychotic energy. He resolved the issue with his next statement, which he uttered through his hand. "We'll continue our arrangement from the restaurant as payment then. I have a few more questions I'd love answered. After letting you have free access to my bed for the last three days, it's the least you can do."

Hisoka's eyes darkened as they monitored her between his spread fingers. His lips twitched, holding back whatever expression attempted to escape his shaky control to play across his features. Her intent and strong eyes matched his response while keeping her body ready to defend. But she quickly surmised the fastest way to freedom was to play along. She was aware enough to know he was more than capable of giving her a hard battle if she tried to rush for the door.

She would play his game and beat him. It was her only option.

"Fine!"

Hisoka lowered his hand and switched to a sweet smile complete with soft eyes. "Excellent. We'll have to continue this later as I have a few personal matters to attend to right now. I'm certain you'd like to have a shower without me around as well." He pointed to the bedroom door and gestured in the direction of the shower beyond the living room. "You're welcome to borrow anything you need. I won't be long."

Violet was anything but comfortable with this arrangement. However, it might be the opportunity she needed to get out, and a shower sounded enticing.

"Just one thing."

Great. Now what?

"Don't leave this apartment unless I'm with you." The magician looked at Violet with a serious expression. Not a lick of kindness played within his features. It was a clear, undeniable command which required a verbal agreement.

"What? Now I'm a prisoner?!" Violet sat up on her knees, attempting to leave the bed, her limit reached.

"You're not a prisoner, but you're also above the two hundredth floor of Heaven's Arena. You'll be hazed, likely to death, if you leave this room. There is a reason less than one percent of fighters make it this far."

He maintained a serious composure, waiting for her response. It was slow given the state of her sleep-fogged mind. She slowly fell back into a sitting position on the bed.

"What...?"

"Don't misunderstand. I believe you could handle most fighters on this floor, but you haven't eaten in nearly three days and were not faring well before this morning."

Although she felt miles better than before passing out, she was all too aware of her current weakness. It was the main reason she agreed to Hisoka's demands and was not physically forcing her way out. Of course, the risk always loomed that rushing the door or any swift movements may eliminate the last of his self-control in place of prey drive. Then, her situation would very much be dire. However, the idea of dealing with several Hisokas' at once in a narrow hallway was not attractive either.

"I won't leave until you get back...wait. Why can't I just leave with you now?" She looked towards him with hope.

Hisoka uncrossed his legs and rested his hands on the arms of the chair. "I haven't received my question period payment yet." He pointed to the box on the solid wood nightstand in front of the table lamp. "I won't be long." He stood up to leave.

"Hisoka!" She leaned forward, bracing her hands on the mattress for support. "I had a fight on the fiftieth floor scheduled."

The magician turned to look at her with a shrewd smile. "Don't worry. I fail to show for fights all the time if they aren't worth my time. It often happens here ♥"

Without another word, he walked out, locking the heavy door to the apartment behind him. Violet sat in bed dumbfounded for a little while. Her chest tightened with the stress as she waited several minutes in the bed to confirm he had left. Investigating the room with a clear mind, she was surprised at how crisp the clean space appeared.

Beside the chair Hisoka had rested upon was a large six-drawer dresser. The window didn't reach the bed but seemed to nearly touch the floor should the curtains be removed. There was a large accent rug to the left of the bed and a full-length mirror on the far wall before the entrance to the closest. Stepping into this space, she performed on swirl taking in the high-end nature of all the décor.

Since there was no longer an escape path, the huntress decided to at least take the opportunity to shower. Snatching the box by the nightstand, she left the bedroom to be greeted by a bright living room and a kitchen on the far side of the apartment. She found the short hallway that led to the door Hisoka indicated housed the water closet. Padding barefoot into the space, she locked the bathroom for extra safety but had a distinct feeling if Hisoka wanted in, no locked door would stop him.
