30. Mousetrap

A/N: This one is a bit longer (you're welcome @Lcd123004)

It's a bit intense, so be ready. The Yorknew arc will soon be ending! Greed Island, here we come!!

Dedication because Shannara helped me name the new character (which I deliberately haven't dropped yet) and her familiar.

---------------------------

Deafening silence coated the streets and alleyways as Yorknew continued to recover from the aftermath of war. A slow mist danced in the corners, spreading from the darkness, ever testing how much of the night it could claim. Floating in swirling sinister intentions as its final dance displayed a few hours before the day could retake the city. The sound of clashing metal against cement resounded and bounced off the buildings as a garbage bin lost balance and succumbed to roll along the uneven ground.

Yellow irises narrowed to make way for enlarged black pupils as the orbs took in the sight of the rolling can. Turning her head forwards again towards the path she walked along on top of the buildings, the black fur coat glimmered in the moonlight as the clouds fully parted, and the silent creature continued to trot along. Black as death, not an object could get in her way as the feline jumped down with ease and skirted building structures without once losing pace. Only once she reached her destination did the midnight cat slow. The feline stopped to match the gaze of purple irises, glowing dimly in the night. Red painted lips smiled with amusement at the cat's arrival as the feline eyes told her all she would seek. Every detail of what the creature had viewed now in her mind's eyes, the woman reached out with a curled dark finger to gently scratch until the cat's chin, which elicited an audible purr and reflexive rubbing against the hand of her mistress.

"It would appear our little blonde investment has bitten off more than she can chew again, Thandiwe," her voice sang in low tones similar to the purr of the black cat now rubbing against her thigh. Hidden within the shadows overlooking the slums from their high perch, she tilted her head back to the maze below. "It's too early yet. A bit of assistance to ensure a return of profit might be in order. What to do you say, little one?"

The only response was a look of adoration and shrill, loving meow, which echoed in the silent night. A bubbling and sweet-sounding laughter escaped the blood-red lips in perfect contrast to the darkness beneath the woman's façade.

Sweat cascaded down the slick skin of Violet's face, dripping off her body at the chin to scatter along the streets of the city as she skirted to the right to hide behind another dark corner. Her chest rose and fell in struggled waves as thundering heartbeats tried to keep up with the demands of her adrenaline and physical needs calling at once. The echoing voices of several hunters called in the not too far distance. Lost was an understatement for the stressed huntress as the maze of the Yorknew slums disoriented her. All too aware this would be her only chance to escape; there was no way she would allow such an opportunity to go to waste in her capable grasp. That fact would hold true no matter how much the odds stacked against the blonde fighter.

Violet's breath steadied, but the red discolour on her face remained from over-exertion. Although she could hear some of the men, most were quiet and awaiting her to make the wrong move and pounce. Even those she could partially locate were concealed by the bouncing echoes making it near impossible to locate everyone precisely. I'm no stranger to poor odds, but these make even me a bit cautious.

The grinding of teeth preceded swift movements as the huntress dashed out of the dead-end shadowed alleyway to rush for freedom again. It was ill-timed and elicited two shrill whistles and the pounding of boots against the pavement as she was spotted in the maze from above.

"Shit."

Dodging down another turn only to follow that movement with another twist in the opposite direction, Violet blindly searching for an escape. There was far more coverage for her within the maze than above it. However, that didn't change her desire to be high where she would fare better than the tight hell hole of the labyrinth.

A quick gasp rushed out of her lips as she ducked and narrowly avoided a fist brimming with Ko aimed at her head. Without missing a beat, the huntress latched her palm to the corner of the wall and dung her Ko filled hand deeply into the bricks. Braced against the structure, she swung upside down and landed a first powerful Ko-kick under the Nen attacker's chin. The speed of the assault and night prevented a clear image beyond that he was powerful and male. Righting herself, she bounced into the air to twirl and land a hard Ko roundhouse to his head. With only a hand's breadth from the wall, his head collided and the splattering sound mixed with cracking bones echoed in Violet's wake as she continued her escape, not once looking back to the massacre she inflected.

A series of screams echoed from the part of the maze she had just left as comrades found the fallen man. It didn't slow their pursuit of the huntress and practically intensified the chase as several people's bloodlust smouldered through the air. How the fuck are they this strong! Zanko's people weren't this strong. I don't get it!

Frustration coloured Violet's mind and her movements and expression of narrowed intense eyes and grinding teeth. She knew her lack of Nen knowledge was creating a significant disadvantage. A straight shot to the hotel would be simple if she scaled the building. But then they would all spot her at once, and instead of two or three opponents bottlenecked into her fists, she would be surrounded and overwhelmed.

"Violet!" Jason's voice echoed through the slums while she hid among the shadows to catch her breath and tried to formulate a better plan. "If you don't want every single fucking one of your bones broken and ground into dust, you'll get your ass back here! I own you! I will mark as much of you as necessary to get that through your thick dumb skull whore!"

Soft curses left Violet's pale lips as her body instinctively shuddered. The drive to fight and rage was being interrupted by her untreated PTSD, as it tried to overwhelm a fighter's control. Another frustrated whimper sounded. Shaking her head, she growled in thick resolve. I will never be his victim again. I'll keep my promise to Hisoka if I can. If he captures me, I'll die taking him with me.

A rumbling growl vibrated up her chest as she narrowed her eyes and jolted forward to take on the labyrinth again with new deadly determination. Luck sided with Violet this time, and avoidance of detection remained for several tense minutes. The feeling of their aura and pounding of heavy boots and movements started to fill her ears as she came to a dead halt. The alleyway continued left, right and straight forward. Dark shadows moved around the area as street lights and moonlight flickered in and out, allowing the taunting dance.

A frustrated low sound rumbled from Violet's throat as she looked between each of her options. Her body was weakened and tired. Stress was no friend to her either. She didn't have the luxury of taking time to decide and opted for the path to her left, the general direction of the hotel.

A cough sounded from the alleyway that had been the forward option causing Violet to spin and sound off with a startled gasp before growling at the new presence in the middle of the path of choices. A woman standing a few inches short of six feet slowly stepped into the centre of the blonde fighter's field of vision. I didn't see her! How didn't I see her?!

The woman's face was shrouded in the deep green of the hooded coat she wore. It spiralled down, fitting her perfect hourglass physique like a glove before flowing out at her waist and reaching to her knees.

"If I may," the woman's gentle, amused voice rang out as she slowly lifted her arms, covered in the coat to her wrists, to hook the sides of her hood. She slid the cotton fabric down, and it draped over her shoulders as the hood dangled down her back. Most of her hair remained trapped under the material, but the visible black locks shone with vibrance against her deeply pigmented skin. "Take the right path. Not that one."

Violet looked at her face for the first time and widened her eyes. In the street lights, her vision had colour again, and the purple of the stranger's eyes struck the huntress right away due in part to the drastic accent of her gold and green eyeshadow. Her angled jaw, high cheekbones and perfectly suited nose were visible as a dimpled amused smile coloured the newcomer's face. She blended perfectly with the shadows with little effort.

"Who—"

"There is no time. Take the right path," she cooed and tilted her head in the direction indicated. "There's a bottleneck awaiting you to the left and an ambush in front." A sinister amusement bounced between her eyes and bright red lips, which unnerved Violet.

"The choice is yours. What is there to lose in trying the right path? Either it is free, or they're all blocked. A smart girl like you can sort that much ou—"

Laughter filled the alleyway as the dark ally watched Violet race down the right path. "Such a fierce one. You'll be exceptional once you're activated. I can hardly wait to take every piece of you for myself." A meow disrupted her voice, and she regarded her familiar by her foot. "You're right, Naisula. I will have to take the leftover pieces after my sisters have their fill. Lions eat before jackals after all."

Please don't let this be the wrong choice! Violet thought as she moved through the mousetrap maze at top speed. As she raced, the gaps between the buildings widened, and the streets started to clear of unkept garbage with every step. There was still much ground to cover, but the huntress began to feel more confident with every minute.

"Violet!" A shrill screeching cry saturated the air in the stretch of the alley she was conquering, causing the huntress to skid to a stop. Her hair whipped around as she turned. The strands were frayed, and many broken as they desperately tried to stay in the quickly failing tie up the fighter had created. Dirt, blood, and sweat decorated her hair as much as her face and body.

Violet stared wide-eyed and panting as she looked at Sammy Walker, who emerged from a side alley. Tears streamed down her face, and concern clouded her expression. The tech huntress was breathing as heavily as her friend.

"Stop, Violet!" she shrieked in repetition. "You're injured! We're just trying to help you!" Sammy stepped forwards, resulting in the blonde huntress instinctively stepping back.

Sammy stopped and raised her hands, trying to calm the frightened deer in front of her and prevent agitating another escape attempt from her. "Violet..." She frowned at the state of her friend. "What happened? What's wrong. Let me help you, please."

Violet took another half step back and shook her head. "No, Sammy. You don't understand. Not really." A single tear escaped from the corner of her left eye. The huntress cut a sob off in her throat. She had never spoken aloud even to herself about that night and wasn't certain she could even now. "I hope you never learn to understand it."

Sammy slowly walked up to Violet, who watched the ground, forcing all the emotions back into the deep chest she kept them locked, buried and sunken within her deep hiding place. Far from any sunlight where they may be heard or seen. "Violet," Sammy whispered beside the huntress and wrapped her hands around Violet's arms, making the woman's Hazel eyes lock onto the shining olive ones. "I can help you. I care about you, Violet. I will do anything to help you."

The strong, resolute huntress knitted her brows in confusion before determined hope painted her eyes, making Sammy smile. This was the woman she had known through the years. "Then, leave with me." Sammy dropped her arms and opened her mouth slightly, looking at the blonde, dirty woman. "Go with me now, Sammy. Jason is going to hurt you. Come with me and keep me safe while I keep you safe."

Violet's eyes dripped with eager hope and anticipation. She wanted Sammy to come with her and be safe away from the devil of a man. Certainty coursed through the huntress. She could get them both free and would figure something out with Hisoka once they were clear of their current threat.

"No."

Violet froze while Sammy's hands snatched her around the wrists and pulled the arms away from the huntress.

"You're wounded and not thinking straight," Sammy continued, "and you need to stay with us. Violet, if you leave, you'll be abandoning your family and people. We need you as much as you need us."

The huntress continued to look at Sammy's brown beautiful hands wrapped around her wrists. "I told you I like you, Violet. I know you feel the same. You fluster and go out of your way for me. Stay. For me."

Violet shook her head and opened her mouth to speak in protect when Sammy's hands moved to cup her face on either side. The huntress widened her eyes in response to the fiery intensity in the olive eyes staring back. Before she could react further, Sammy tightened her grip on Violet's face and forced their lips together. Her right hand moved across the blonde woman's neck to snake up the back of her head to firmly grip her dirty blonde locks.

Violet mumbled protests into Sammy's mouth, prompting the woman to push weight into the blonde woman's body, forcing her back into the alley's brick wall. The tech huntress licked at the pale pink lower lip of the Nen specialist in her grip. There was no response in the lips, but further whining protests sounded.

Finally, Violet couldn't handle the awkwardness anymore and opened her mouth to call for her friend to stop. That was all Sammy needed to slip her tongue into the blonde fighter's mouth. It felt so different to Hisoka. There was a force with both their techniques; however, this felt wrong, and all she could think about was making it stop. Beyond that, Hisoka's technique elicited lust and yearning with so little effort. Sammy was evoking body tension and a rigid jaw.

Again, Violet called for Sammy to stop. But the woman was too lost in her lust to respond. The huntress wrapped her hands around the tech huntress's arms and pushed back, forcing the black-haired woman off.

"Stop, Sammy!" She held her friend in place. "I don't want it! I don't feel like that for you anymore! You're my friend, and even if I did feel that way, now is not the time!"

Sammy stepped back from Violet's grip, and the blonde fighter sighed and wiped dirt and blood from her right cheek with the back of her wrist. "You're leaving then? Abounding us for this world rather than going home?"

She shook her head. "Sammy. It's not that simple. But all that matters is that Jason will hurt you if you stay. Please come with me. I can set you up with a new life here if you need it. You'll be safer."

"No. I trust Jason! I know you have issues, but I know where I stand with him." Sammy looked away and crossed her arms in front of her chest in frustration.

"Is there anything I can say to get you to come with me, Sammy?" The other woman shook her head without looking at Violet as tears welled in her olive eyes. "I'm sorry, Sammy..."

Violet turned and walked away, her chest tightening in too much pain to look back. Walking away and leaving the woman to a hell she had experienced herself was pushing the resolve of the huntress to its limit. But she didn't have the energy to drag a fighting Sammy from this place and take on the people still hunting her.

"Last chance," Sammy called. "There is no way to convince you to stay?" The huntress continued to walk away with her head held high, fighting every urge to go back to her friend. There was no time left to spare on this stalemate of an argument. "Such a shame. It seemed such a good plan too."

Violet tilted her head slightly and frowned as her brows knitted, not understanding the last line. It was quickly made apparent as Sammy bellowed into the night. "Jason! She's here! Come quickly!"

"Sammy! What are you doing!"

The sound of several Nen users closing in on them echoed across the nearby narrow ways. With no choice left, Violet turned to clear the area. She halted just as quickly as three hunters with Jason lined the escape. Looking back, Jason, Mac, and Lachlan emerged from behind Sammy. Swallowing hard, the huntress dropped into a fighting stance.

Sammy shook her head. "Just come back, Violet. It will be easier."

"You have no idea what he's done to me! To other women, Sammy! Get away from him!"

"I thought you were supposed to be smart, Violet?" Sammy frowned, then took several steps backwards to stand beside Jason. "You were shrieking like a dying cat the other night. Anyone would know what was happening. All the people around you were the other women Jason regularly visits."

Violet growled. "You know all along?" The other woman nodded, and blood pounded in the blonde fighter's head as white threatened the edges of her vision, whispering in sinister intent to let rage consume her.

"It was my plan. I plant you there, and Jason arrives," Sammy responded without an ounce of remorse. "Before Jason could finish the deed, I would disrupt things, and between your crush and the new Stockholm we'd create, you would be easy to manipulate." She sighed. "But you've been nothing but a difficult bitch."

Violet looked at Sammy with a wrinkled nose and disgusted expression. "How could you do that to anyone! For a pig like Jason! You know he's doing this, and you're just enabling him!"

"Shut up, whore," Jason interjected. "We tried it Sammy's way—"

"It was to help you, Violet," Sammy explained. "You'd be on the receiving end less this way, and I could keep you safe."

"He's not safe, Sammy! You're not safe!"

"Enough!" Jason roared. "Grab her. The right thigh is injured; rip it up until she faints. I'll drag her back."

Violet was in the middle of a furious attack as the three behind her pounced at once. The scurry sounded with breaking bones and desperate shrieks. Minutes later, the huntress pounded the last man's head into the paved ground listening to it smash as she pulled her blood-soaked fingers from his unprotected head. Looking up from her crouched position, she snarled at Jason.

"You cannot send the Nen-less after a Nen fighter, you maniac."

"I'm the maniac, yet you just killed three men without so much as blinking? You— Oh, for fucks sake! Stop her!"

Violet was halfway up the wall using the fire escapes, window sills, and balconies to launch towards the sky. But she froze at the top of the building when Sammy cried her name in desperation. She could feel the genuine nature of the woman, prompting the huntress to look back. No matter what her friend had done, the blonde fighter had a deep love for Sammy and couldn't resist the call.

"It was the only way, Violet! The only way to help you and limit your abuse. If you'll work with us and help us get home, we can work something out with Jason. Please don't—"

"Sammy!" Violet shrieked with shock as a treacherous finality and terror gripped her chest and squeezed without relenting. "No!" she watched in horror as Sammy's eyes went empty and blood spilt for both corners of her mouth. The last breath from the woman was nothing but desperate gags on hot blood.

Jason's hand pulled back with Sammy's heart in his Nen enhanced hand. The woman fell downwards for the last time. "She was never much my type," he jeered while dropping the still warm heart from his hand. "She was only useful as a lure for you, and if she cannot fulfil that role, there is no point keeping around another mouth to feed."

Violet howled at him and took a step forward, watching his eyes enlarge with the excitement of getting to take the huntress on in an enraged state. Jason knew she was nearing her limit, and she would walk right into his waiting clutches. He couldn't wait to abuse her repeatedly in this street when she ran completely dry of Nen defences.

"Gain experience without injury. No more of your cursed techniques and pushing beyond what you can handle ~"

Halted, Violet saw Hisoka's mischievous smile looking back at her in her mind's eye. Sammy's body remained motionless, face down, as a crimson circle spread out beneath her form. Gritting her teeth, she turned and fled over the rooftops away from the hunters to the enraged war cries of Jason in the night. Tears streamed down the huntress' face as she abandoned her friend in favour of escaping. You cannot help the dead, Violet.

Let's hope Hisoka isn't too far off.
