Chapter Twenty - Shawarma
The ravaged and blood-soaked bus was in front of them as they sat on the bench at the bus stop, eating their Shawarma. Dean, belly full and happy, had fallen asleep in Logan's lap. Laura beside him was wolfing down her burrito.
"You know, the Avengers discovered shawarma." Wade said, mid-chew.
"They'd be lucky to have you." Logan said.
"Really?"
"Hm." He nodded, taking another giant bite.
"Awe! Peanut!" He went to snuggle into Logan's grumbling frame but perked up when hearing a familiar bark.
Dogpool.
She came waddling sheepishly up to them at the bench.
"Oh, fuck off! Come here, my little cunt-chkin! Yes, it's you. You're a survivor. She made it!!" Wade scooped the hairless abomination into his arms, snuggling her with absolute love. "All's right in the world. Yes, it is."
Logan huffed and stroked Dogpool's mohawk. "I guess I'm not the only one picking up strays."
"Kids, a dog, a wife - you've got the whole package." Said Wade.
He frowned. "Wife?"
Wade put a hand under his chin, blinking his eyelashes at him.
"No. Absolutely not."
"Hey! I'm perfect wifey material!"
"No you're fucking not."
"I am! I'll cook you dinner in a frilly little apron, tuck the kids into bed and blow you as a wake up call."
"I don't even know if you're joking anymore."
"Who said I was joking?!"
Logan rubbed his temples, groaning.
Laura laughed.
The noise woke up Dean. Still half asleep, the little mutant stretched, rolled over and cuddled into Logan's chest. "Daddy?" He muttered. He then fell right back to sleep.
Hearing the words made Logan's heart stutter and his brain to short-circuit. He hummed, rubbed Dean's back and said, "So.... this is what it feels like."
The words made Laura freeze. She and Wade made eye contact.
"So. What're we gonna do next?" Wade asked, throwing his empty wrapper on the floor.
"I'll figure it out. I always do." Said Logan.
That made Wade frown, "Wait. So you're not staying? With me?"
He let out a laugh. "And be a big happy family? You were serious about that?"
The frown deepened. "Why wouldn't I be?"
"We've known each other for two days and suddenly we're married with kids and a dog?"
"How about getting engaged first?"
"Wade--"
"Oh. Right. No." Wade deflated, all his hope fizzling out of body. "So... I'll probably see ya around?"
"Probably not." Logan said, already seeming regretful. He threw out his empty wrapper. "See you, bub." Wolverine stood, keeping Dean in his arms and started walking. Laura gave Wade a sympathetic glance before hurrying to follow her new found father.
Wade watched for a moment. Them walking away hurt. Hurt so fucking much. More than dying. More than cancer. More than Vanessa. Even Dogpool gave a little whine.
No. He couldn't let them go. This was the first time in a long time that he was truly happy. He can't let that get away from him. Not again. This time, he'll fight with all his might.
He stood and called down the block to the three. "Logan!"
The Wolverine then stopped, hearing his name. He turned and spotted Wade's open hopeful face. He looked to Laura, who was smiling at him, her eyes filled with challenge. She gestured to Wade with her head.
Logan sighed and smiled. "I'm gonna regret this."
