Chapter: What's Happening?
After narrowly escaping the Garrison, Keith drove the team to the safety of his house/shack/hovel. He along with (Y/N) guided Shiro, who somehow managed to sleep through all of that, to the couch.
"Ok, put him down gently Keith," the boy rolled his eyes and somehow translated that to drop the full weight of the male on the female.
"I said gently!" (Y/N) snapped, struggling to support both of them. Keith secretly smirked then helped her set down the pilot on the couch, both then taking a minute to catch their breaths before Keith was kind enough to put a blanket over him. Lance took one look at the state of the shack.
"Geeze, mullet head, do you ever clean in here?" Keith had an irk mark on his temple. Luckily Pidge elbowed Lance in his ribs.
"What Lance means is, thank you for saving us back there," the male stood next to (Y/N).
"Don't mention it. If (Y/N) says you're friends, I guess it's fine," she smirked at the sound of her name.
"Aw, little Keith is all grown up and thinking of others. I'm so proud," Keith mock punched her arm, but with a smile on his face.
"So how do you 2 know each other?" Hunk asked. Keith answered.
"I'm actually a friend of her boyfriend, so we met a couple of times. (Y/N) was like a second mentor to me back at the Garrison actually," Lance stomped his foot.
"You had 2 mentors!? No wonder you got into fighter class and I didn't!" Pidge snorted.
"Yes Lance, that's why," Hunk interjected.
"Um, so what do we do now, cause I think we should really be heading back!" (Y/N) shook her head.
"They'll know by now we're missing and end up connecting the dots, especially for me. If we go back, they'll either have us thrown in prison or force us to lead them to Ta- Shiro to recapture him. Heading back is not an option anymore," Hunk hung his head in disappointment. While (Y/N) offered him a comforting pat on the shoulder, Pidge assessed the situation.
"Well I don't mind, but I need to know what Shiro saw," Lance jumped in.
"Yeah! This guy deserves to have someone listen to him! I'll even believe in the aliens," She laughed.
"Alright, but it's been a long night. Keith, why don't you help the guys find somewhere to sleep?" Keith shot a glance at her.
"And you?" She turned to Shiro and knelt beside him, gripping his real hand.
"I'm... gonna stay up and watch him. He'll be confused and I think it's for the best if I'm the one who explains it to him," The mullet haired male nodded understandingly before pushing the students to one side of the hut and pulling out a makeshift divider. Though that didn't stop the noise.
"I'm really confused right now,"
"What else is new Lance?" Pidge stated sarcastically.
"But why does she get to talk to Shiro?!"
"Because she's his girlfriend genius!"
"What!? Since when!?"
"Since they were in the Garrison!"
"Wait, you said you knew her boyfriend! You know Shiro!?"
"Obviously!"
"Um, this might be a bad time, but is there anything to eat here?"
(Y/N) chuckled at their antics before looking back at Shiro.
"Takashi, please wake up,"
Timeskip
A few hours later, (Y/N) was caught between consciousness and unconsciousness, when a sudden jolt sped through her hand. Her eyes opened and she saw her boyfriend beginning to flail, his eyes still closed.
"Shiro! Wake up!"
"Get off of me! Let me go!" In order to prevent him from hurting himself or her, and since she wasn't really functioning mentally since she had had no sleep, (Y/N) jumped on him, her legs trying to pin his arms, while her hands gripped his cheeks.
"GET OFF!"
"Takashi please calm down! Open your eyes! It's me...it's me," Shiro stopped his struggles. Only one person ever called him by his first name. His dark eyes opened and were met by a comforting and familiar (E/C), slightly red due to the tears starting to come up. He didn't dare hope that this was real, that the girl he loved was here with him, trying to comfort him. Through the entire time he had been tortured by the aliens, the thought of seeing (Y/N) had been his driving force, the thought of never seeing her again terrifying him. Now that the moment of their reunion came, he couldn't believe his own eyes. His voice cracked under the weight of the emotions.
"(Y/N)?" Tears flooded her cheeks as she pounced on him, her arms wrapping around his neck and her face in his chest. He put his left arm around her waist, cradling her as if she'd disappear if he held her any tighter. His cyborg arm hung at his side, fearful the terrible technology would hurt her more than he already had. He kissed the crown of her hair, reveling in her company again.
"It's ok (N/N), I'm here,"
"One year, you idiot! I never believed them when they said you were gone, but do you know how hard it was without you!?"
"It was hard for me to, but everyday I thought of you," He placed his hand on her chin and brought her into a loving kiss, the feelings of a year's worth of suppressed emotions bursting forth.
They almost didn't notice the audience peeking from the background. Pidge pushed everyone through the door.
"Ok, give them some real privacy!" The door slammed behind her and the couple laughed.     (Y/N) then took on a serious look.
"Shiro, what happened up there?"
"I don't remember, I recall bits and pieces, but everything else is fuzzy. But it doesn't matter right now,"
"Doesn't matter!? Takashi look at you! Your hair's white, you have a huge scar on your face, you're missing an arm for God's sake! At least let me take a look!" Shiro jolted his fake arm away from her reaching hand.
"No! Please, this arm, it's dangerous. They put it on me to make me a weapon! I don't want to hurt you!" She smiled sadly at him and kissed his nose.
"Takashi, I know you, and I know you'd never do anything to hurt me. This arm might have been forced on you, but it's part of you now, and I trust you with my life," the male beneath her relaxed a bit, but still refused to let her near it, so she decided to drop it and hugged him again.
"I really missed you," he smiled and hugged back.
"I missed you to (N/N),"
Just before they could share another kiss, Lance, who had obviously been listening in, fell through the door. Keith glared at him.
"Nice going," Pidge peeked in and gave a bashful wave.
"Um sorry about this, he-we were all very curious," (Y/N) rolled her eyes before marching up to the students and pushing them back outside.
"Ok, I think Shiro needs some alone time. Come out and join us when you're ready. Keith kept a set of your old clothes in the closet," he nodded before she closed the door. A few minutes later, the pilot emerged in his normal attire and was joined by Keith in a small discussion. (Y/N) decided to hold back since it seemed this was more a conversation for mentor and student. So she waited until Keith led them back inside and revealed his notes and research about the area. Shiro stared in confusion
"What have you been working on?"
"I can't explain it really. After getting booted out of the Garrison, I was kinda lost and I felt myself drawn out to this place. It was like something, some energy was telling me to search," (Y/N) took a closer look at the notes.
"For what?"
"Well, I didn't really know at the time, until I stumbled across this area," Keith pointed to a circled area on a map of the nearby mountains labeled energy source.
"It's an outcropping of giant boulders with caves covered in these ancient markings. Each one tells a different story about a blue lion, but they all share clues leading to an event, some arrival happening last night, then you showed up," (Y/N) rubbed her chin.
"That can't just be a coincidence, it's too precise," Shiro nodded in agreement before turning to the other cadets. He walked up to Lance.
"I should thank you all for getting me out. Lance right?" Shiro put out his cyborg arm to shake. Lance was a little hesitant at first, but smiled and shook. Shiro then turned to the other 2 who were less willing to do so, prompting a reaction from their mentor.
"The nervous one is Hunk and the other is Pidge," Pidge took Shiro's hand after having that push from the older girl.
"So, did anyone else from your crew make it out?"
"I'm not sure. I remember the mission and being captured, after that it's just bits and pieces," He looked upset at not being able to answer Pidge's question, so (Y/N) gripped his hand.
"Don't force yourself. It'll come back eventually," He gave her a smile of thanks. Hunk ruined the moment then.
"Yeah, sorry to interrupt but back to the aliens. Where are they now? Are they coming? Are they coming for all of us? Like where are they at this very moment?" He grew increasingly paranoid looking while the now white and black haired man sighed.
"I don't know. I can't really put it together. I remember the word Voltron, it's some kind of weapon they're looking for, but I don't know why. Whatever it is, I think we need to find it before they do,"
"I agree. Judging by the state your in, I don't think we want those aliens to find what they're looking for," (Y/N) stated as Hunk began rummaging through Pidge's bag.
"Well, last night I was rummaging through Pidge's stuff and I found this picture. Look it's his girlfriend," Pidge immediately snatched the photo of her and her brother from Hunk's hand.
"Hey give me that! What were you doing in my stuff?"
"I was looking for a candy bar, but then I started reading his diary,"
"What!?" The book was then snatched as well.
"And I noticed the repeating series of numbers the aliens are searching for looks like a Fraunhofer line,"
"Frown who?" Keith asked.
"It's a number describing the emission spectrum of an element," (Y/N) answered before looking at the engineer with pride.
"Well done Hunk. That slips past most first year engineers," the boy was too into his explanation to be bashful.
"Yeah but this element doesn't exist on Earth. I thought it might be this Voltron and I think I might be able to build a machine to look for it, like some Voltron Geiger counter,"
"Hunk! You big gassy genius!" Lance praised.
"It is pretty fascinating really. The wave length looks like this," Hunk pulled out a sheet of paper with a familiar formation. Keith quickly took it and lined it up with the boulders on his map.
"I guess we have our location," (Y/N) stated.
Timeskip
"Okay, I admit, this is super freaky," Lance said as the group followed Hunk through the formation.
"I second that!" (Y/N) agreed as she walked behind her boyfriend, using his shadow to shield her from the sun. "I feel like we're the idiots in a horror movie that end up releasing the man eating monster," Shiro snorted.
"How would you know? You're too scared to watch those movies!" She punched him on the shoulders with a blush.
"Shut up! Hunk, anything?"
"I'm getting a reading," he said while following his device as Pidge held up the scanner. He led the group to a semi concealed cave. Inside were carvings marring every inch of the stone.
"What are these?" Shiro asked.
"They're the carvings I told you about. They're everywhere around here,"
Lance walked up to one area of the wall and wiped the dust off the picture, only for it along with all the others to glow a neon blue, causing everyone to huddle in surprise.
"They've never done that," Keith stated before the ground beneath the group crumbled, causing them to tumble down deeper into the cavern, riding a stream of water, before dumping them unceremoniously into a puddle. The guys landed face first on the floor, while Pidge managed to land with Hunk and (Y/N) landed on top of Shiro.
"Well that was fun," the female pilot said sarcastically.
As everyone rose to their feet, they were left in awe at the sight before them: what could only be described as a giant mechanized blue lion protected by a barrier.
"They are everywhere," Lance whispered.
"Is this it? Is this the Voltron?" Pidge question.
"It must be," Shiro replied while Keith began to ponder out loud
"This is what's been causing all this crazy energy out here," he walked closer. "Looks like there's a forcefield around it,"
"Does anyone else get the feeling it's staring at them?" Lance asked as he began moving back and forth. "Yeah, the eyes are totally following me," Keith ignored him and put his hands against the field.
"Wonder how we get through this,"
"Maybe you just need to knock," Lance retorted before following through. Immediately, the shield fell as a burst of energy spurred the room to life. The group stared in wonder as a vision of six different colored lions flew together and formed a giant robotic knight.
"Woah," was all Lance could say. "Ugh, did anyone else just see that?"
"Voltron is a robot! A huge, huge awesome robot," Hunk almost screamed.
"And this thing is only one part of it," (Y/N) concluded. "I wonder where the rest of them are,"
"This is what they're looking for," Shiro randomly said.
"Incredible," Keith added.
The lion bowed its head and opened its jaws, revealing a path inside. Lance, of course, took the initiative and charged in, with the others following a safe distance behind. Lance was already in what they assumed was the pilot's seat by the time they caught up to him in the head, and together took delightful glee in seeing through the eyes of the robot.
"Ok guys I feel the need to point out just so that we're all, you know, clear: we're in some kind of futuristic alien cat head right now,"
"Woah, did you guys just hear that?" Lance interrupted.
"Hear what?" (Y/N) asked.
"I think it's talking to me!" He suddenly pushed a few buttons, causing the lion to stand and let out a reverberating roar which echoed through the cave. Lance, seeming satisfied while everyone was trying to cling to something, grabbed hold of the piloting shifts.
"Ok good, let's try this,"
He jutted them forward, causing the lion to burst from the cavern and take to the air. It fell to the Earth before thrusters from all four paws lifted back into the sky. Inside the head, Hunk and Pidge clung to an annoyed Lance, Keith pushed into Shiro, Shiro tried to balance himself on the sides, and (Y/N) clung to Shiro, much to his simultaneous embarrassment and enjoyment.
"You are the worst. Pilot. Ever!" Keith struggled to say as Lance continued with his series of loops and straight away before bolting to the ground and allowing the robot to run along it like the actual animal.
"Isn't this awesome!?"
"Make it stop! Make it stop!" Hunk begged as the poor boy looked ready to hurl.
"I'm not making it do anything, it's like it's on autopilot!" The lion shot upwards.
"Where are you going?" Keith demanded.
"I just told you it's on autopilot. It says there's a ship approaching Earth. I think we're supposed to stop it,"
"What did it say exactly!?" Pidge screamed while Lance looked annoyed at his teammate.
"Well it's not like it's saying words, more like feeding ideas into my brain kinda,"
"Well if this thing's the weapon they're coming for, why don't we just, I don't know, give it to them? Maybe they'll leave us alone?" Hunk reasoned. Shiro gave him a stern look.
"You don't understand, these monsters spread like a plague, destroying everything in their path. There's no bargaining with them. They won't stop until everything is dead," a hard silence fell the lion head as everyone stared harshly at a bashful Hunk.
"Oh...never mind then,"
The lion burst from the earth's upper atmosphere before a giant ship appeared from almost nowhere, leaving most of the group with their mouths hanging wide open.
"Holy crow is that an actual alien spaceship?" Hunk asked, not believing his eyes.
"They found me," Shiro murmured. (Y/N) heard him and scooted closer to offer him some comfort before a barrage of lasers were fired at them.
"You gotta get it out of here!" Pidge commanded Lance.
"Hang on!" Lance pulled the steering devices upward, causing the machine to dodge before bursting towards the ship.
"Ok I think I know what to do!" Lance assured while Pidge pulled up beside him in a worried state.
"Be careful man! This isn't a simulator!"
"Well that's good, I always wreck the simulator," at this, (Y/N) clung to her boyfriend tighter.
"I should've tutored him more!"
Lance then pushed the left handle down, causing a massive laser to fire from the lion's mouth and cause untold amounts of damage to the enemy ship.
"Let's try this!" Lance then moved the levers in a different pattern, causing the lion to sky bomb the surface of the ship and wrack its claws against the metal exterior, leaving a trail of explosions, before flying off. Everyone cheered for Lance.
"Ok, I think it's time to get these guys away from our planet,"
Lance steered the lion away from Earth, causing the ship to pursue.
"Oh no!"
"They're gaining on us!"
"It's weird! They're not trying to shoot us, they're just chasing!" Lance analyzed.
"Whatever happens, we can't let them catch up," (Y/N) said.
"Where are we?" Keith asked as Shiro stared out the window.
"Edge of the solar system. There's Kerberos!"
"It takes months for our ships to get out this far!" Pidge exclaimed. "We got here in 5 seconds!"
Suddenly, a large circle of swirling light and darkness appeared before them.
"What is that?" Hunk asked as Lance struggled with the controls.
"This may seem crazy, but i think the lion wants us to go through there!"
"Where does it go?" Pidge questioned.
"I don't know. Shiro, (Y/N), you're the senior officers. What should we do?" The couple looked at each other before nodding in silent agreement.
"Whatever is happening, the lion knows more then we do. I say we should trust it," Shiro answered for both of them. (Y/N) added on.
"But we're a team now. We should decide together," Everyone took a moment to glance at each other in approval before Pidge put her hand on Lance's shoulder, giving him the go ahead.
"Ok, I guess we're all ditching class tomorrow," Shiro gripped (Y/N)'s hand as the lion plunged in, the portal disappearing behind it.
