Chapter 6: Shadows & Monopoly

Dex's POV

As soon as I left Red's house I realized I didn't get the answer to my question. How do I stop talking like this? I thought. You can't lead a pride speaking something that they can't understand. I didn't want to go back, so I decided to go into town instead.

As I watched Cloudcroft become busier by the moment, I realized how little it had changed since I left, maybe a couple of months ago. I wished things could be different, but now Mae will never trust me again. I'm not sure I could trust her after all this, even if she somehow did forgive me.

I then felt someone's presence. A low hiss escaped my lips and a figure appeared from the trees. It was June. I wondered whys she was here and why she was following me. I suppose she wanted to kill me, again. I just wasn't in the mood to fight today.

"What do you want June?" I asked, probably is Misazi. I just knew what I was saying, when no one else did.

"I heard you speak. Where did you learn this language?" She asked, in Misazi. I suppose since Red and Dillan knew it, she would too.

"I don't know. What's it to you?" I asked, my voice dull.

"Do you remember the first time I saw you?" She asked.

"Yes. You called me too trusting then cut my palm, with a poisoned blade." I replied nonchalantly.

"After that. I told you that you had great power in your blood, but you refused to believe me. Or something. Do you still refuse?" She asked.

"I know who I am, and what I am, and you can't change that." I replied. I then got up and started to walk into Cloudcroft. I felt June's eyes burning into me as I walked.

"I wouldn't go into there, if I were you." June warned.

I whipped around to face June, then I asked, "Why?"

"They're looking for you. I suppose it's a full blow man-hunt. If you stroll into town you'll be called a runaway, and be forced back into a human life. And that's not what you want, is it?" She purred.

"You don't know what I want." I mumbled.

"Oh, is that so?" June said.

"Yes."

"I know you want to be with your sister, and I'll promise you this, you'll need her for what's going to happen next. My forces are rising, and I don't think you want your precious pride, and your petty Order friends, to die. So I'll give you a fair warning, because by the time the moon is gone, you will be too." With that she turned and disappeared into the woods.

That was the last thing I needed. Can't a guy just enjoy a day of silence and peace without someone predicting death, or attack him? I needed to clear my head. I shifted into my cat form and walked threw the woods. It was alive with sound. The birds chirping, the rustle of leaves in the wind. I didn't even mind the occasion talk of the hikers.

I was deep in the forest before I decided it was safe to stop. I laid down under a tree and watched the sun. It was warm for late December. I smelt the air and knew snow was on it's way. It would be the first of the season. So I decided to enjoy the warm weather while it lasted. I curled up in the sunshine and fell into a easy sleep.

.  .  .

I woke when a snowflake touched my nose. I flicked my ears and got up to stretch. I say the snowflakes start to fall and watch happily, under the moon light. I bet no human has ever enjoyed anything like this. I thought of Mae, probably looking over maps and plans. While I was here, wild and free.

Then I saw a movement in the bushes. A familiar sent hit my nose and I knew I was due for a fight before she even made her way out of the brush. Kya. Her orange fur and wicked eyes. I hated the look she was giving me, one of pity, as if she was sad that was going to get my butt kicked.

"What do you want." I hissed to her. I realized my words were normal again. Thank god.

"Oh Dex, I think you know very well what I want." She said, "I want you. Either surrender now, or face me, and all the blood it'll bring."

"It'll be your blood spilled tonight." I hissed in return. I felt my eyes turn red and my pupils go into slits. I was ready for a fight.

"Are you sure?" She asked. Then as is on cue, the shadows began to spill around me. They formed into animals of all sorts. Most of them were cats, about my size. The rest were anything from reptiles to birds to mammals. I also saw the shadow wolf from before.

"What is this?" I asked, mortified.

"It is the army of the Shadows. They have offered to help June. We will build a new world, rearranging the order of things. The Werecats and Shadows on top, the humans on the bottom. We are sick of hiding. Aren't you? I'll ask this once nicely, will you join our side?"

"Your mad!" I screamed, "I'd never join forces with the likes of you!"

"So be it." Kya said. Her eyes changed to black and the shadows moved forward. All I had time to do was yowl, before the world was plunged into darkness.

Mae's POV

We were all sitting in the living room, a fire burning. Monopoly was laid out on the coffee table. Everyone except Kyra and my Dad were playing. Kyra laid on the floor reading something, while Zay was doing the same. This was the first normal thing I'd done in a while. We decided it was worth a party when I started speaking English again. Then the phone rang.

The room went to a eerily silence. All there was was the ringing of a telephone. I looked at my Dad and he quickly answered the phone. He spoke in a low hushed tone until he finally hung up and bolted out the door. Me and the rest of the members of the Order just stood there silently.

"Well that was weird." Emilie said, breaking the eerie silence.

"Totally." Emma agreed.

"Do you know what that was all about?" Kya asked, not looking up from her book.

"I don't know." I admitted, "But I guess we'll find out soon."

"How about we guess what he's doing." JJ said. He was the best at coming up with ways to prevent us from all getting board.

"Okay." Kyra said, "I'll go first. When the phone rang his boss called and wanted him to come in late. He probably just forgot to put something up."

"Boo!" We all chanted, in unison.

"Your supposed to make up something completely unrealistic!" JJ exclaimed.

"Well sorry!" Kyra protested.

"Oh! Me next!" Emma said, "I thin he got a call that he got free cookies, but he had to be there in ten minutes to get them! But the cookies are on the other side of the world, so he has to go to his jet, and fly to the other side of the world, really fast!"

"Better!" JJ said.

"My turn." Zay said, "I think he went to the police station."

"One: That's not too unrealistic, like Kyra's. Two: Why do you say that?" JJ asked.

"It's were the last call was from. I just put two and two together." He said, simply, I had no idea how he knew how to do that.

"So let me make up a story!" Emilie said, "I think the police called because he's a international spy, and he's undercover as Mae's Dad. Now he has to save President Cookie!"

"That was so bad!" JJ said, "Ten out of ten!" he shouted.

"You know this is stupid right?" Kyra asked.

"Yes, that's kind of the point!" JJ pointed out.

"Hey Kyra I guess we found something that their better at then you!" I said, "Being stupid!" Kyra looked very offended, while Emma and Emilie just high-fived.

"Hang on, I'm better than them at everything. So I think--" Kyra was cut off when the door opened and my Dad walked in.

"Hey Dad." I said nonchalantly.

"Hey Mae's Dad!" Zay said, "Did you go to the police station?"

"Did you save the president?"

"Did you get the cookies?"

"Is your job okay?"

"Umm, no to all those questions except Zay's." He said. He then started moving around nervously. I saw beads of sweat on his brow and I knew he was hiding something.

"Dad, what are you not telling us." I asked.

"Not telling you?" He asked, "What?"

"You're sweating like a dog, you're movements are nervous, and you're mumbling. I know what it looks like when people lie, especially you. So what's up?"

"Grown-up stuff." He said.

"I battle werecats for a living, my brother tried to kill me, and I've moved! How much more grown-up can a kid get!"

"Those are the exact reasons why I'm not telling you what's wrong with me." He sighed. I rose an eyebrow and he finally broke.

"All of you." He said to us all, "We are going to be making some new ground rules." He said, "Rule 1: Not killing each other. Rule 2: No burning down the house. Rule 3: No killing anyone who steps foot in this house. Understood?"

A chorus of yes's came from us all. I was slightly curious about what Dad was talking about killing for. He seemed to not trust us with each other's lives.

"If any of you break one of theses rules, you'll be out of this house. Except Mae, she'll just be grounded for the rest of her life."

"Okay..." JJ said. I suppose we were all anxious to find out my Dad's big secret.

I saw my Dad walk outside to his car and mumble something. I wish I knew what he was saying. He came back with someone following him. I couldn't see who, until he walked into the house. I saw his messy brown hair, and green eyes. His tattered clothing and hateful gaze. Dex had returned.
