Chapter 3: Surprises & Plans

JJ's POV

The Next Night

It was almost morning now, although the moon still shone brightly in the sky. That meant werecats were still on the prowl. I felt my heart quicken at the thought of a cat jumping onto me, sinking it's long fangs into my throat. Although that wasn't the most terrifying thing the woods had to offer.

For instance, two of my team members, Emma and Emilie, I think, were chanting "I ship it." under their breaths, when ever me and Zay got within five feet of each other. I wondered if they knew I had a girlfriend and they were doing it to annoy me, or if they really did ship it.

Suddenly I heard a rustling sound in the bushes. I walk over to it cautiously, praying that it's not a werecat. I pulled back the thorny bushes, and saw nothing. A wave of relief washed over me. Only that relief didn't ask long. Suddenly I heard the soft padding of paw steps.

Everyone froze. We had all heard the sound and were expecting a snarling beast to jump out. I put my hand to my gun, hoping to see my target before it saw me. Suddenly, near Mae, the bushes parted and we all watched as a werecat with white fur, emerged from the brush. It was followed by a bigger, grey tabby, with blazing green eyes.

I pulled my gun out and willed my shot to be straight, as I fired. I heard the sound ring out, and it almost drowned out Mae's voice screaming for me to stop. I didn't care though. I glanced at the werecat, and I saw the red blood, seeping onto the white werecat's chest. Then it disappeared. It was gone in instances.

We all gasped in shock. I'd never seen a cat who could do such a thing. Suddenly I felt the sun rise and the two werecats shifted into human form. I saw one was a girl, with brown hair and hazel eyes. She looked at me and smiled. The other was a boy and he was on the edge of laughter. He had black hair, green eyes, and freckles. I didn't recognize him but Kyra sure did.

"Dillan?" She asked shocked. Dillan burst out laughing. It wasn't a cold laughter but one of pure happiness. I'd never seen such emotion from a werecat.

"Wait so you didn't know he was a werecat?" Emma asked.

"You did!" Kyra said, bewildered.

"Ya! Of course we did, we're not idiots all the time after all!" Emilie said.

"Ya! Just most of the time!" Emma added.

"So anyone care to explain how we know Dillan?" I asked.

"We have been staying in his house for the past few days. Only I never geussed..." Kyra trailed off. Then she refocused her gaze on Mae, "Did you know?"

"Of course I knew!" Mae said, "I thought you would have had it figured out out long before now. Oh also this is Red. She also owns the house." Mae said, gesturing to the girl.

"The look on your faces was priceless!" Dillan said, before starting into a new round of laughter.

"It was kind of funny." Red agreed.

"Is no one else shocked here!" Kyra asked. Me and Zay just shrugged while, Emma and Emilie weren't even paying attention. Mae shook her head slowly.

"Well I do have one question." I said, to the werecats, "How did my bullet not harm you?"

"Excellent question. It also has a excellent answer but I don't think you'd take it to well. Besides, I don't even know your name." Red said.

"It's JJ." I muttered.

"Anyways." Dillan said, his face more serious now, "We've been looking for Dex. Have you seen him?" he asked Mae.

"We were looking for him too. There's no sign of him." Mae said.

"Well he was here. Someone else died last night. It was pretty clear who the murderer was too. Also there was the word 'Order' spelled out in the victim's blood. I think he's trying to send a message." Dillan reported.

"Well maybe it's time we send him one instead." Mae said.

"Mae? What are you thinking?" Red asked.

"He want's us to play his game, right? Well let him think that, and then we'll set the perfect trap, for our little mouse."

Dillan's POV

Mae said her plan and all of us agreed, some more willingly than others. The members of the Order seemed a little reluctant to work with us werecats but, they finally agreed. It would be the first time in over a century that werecats and the Order worked together. Or so Kyra said. She also mentioned that after the werecats helped the Order they tried to kill them, but that wouldn't happen to us.

It was almost night now, and Mae's plan was about to go into action. This was the last night of the full moon so it was the only time for a month we new Dex would be here. It was now, or never. Me and Red were silently moving threw the trees. I hoped we could find Dex, if not, then the whole plan would be a bust.

The moon rose and Red and I shifted into our werecat forms, we moved faster threw the trees now, hoping to find Dex. By midnight, we had found nothing, and I was beginning to wonder if Dex was even going to show up. By six in the morning, I'd given up all hope.

Then I heard it. A scream. Me and Red raised to the source of the sound, branched hitting our muzzles. Finally we came to a camp sight. The fire was still burning, and everything seem fine, everything except, the blood. The side of the tent was torn open and splattered with blood, the ground also had the dark stains. Then there were the drag marks. We were close now.

Red took the lead and followed the marks until we saw them. There were six werecats here, their pelts were shadows and their eyes glittered in the darkness. Three of the cats were dragging a body of a young woman, her sides badly cut, and the look of horror still frozen on her face.

When we came into view the werecats looked shocked, as if we had caught them doing something wrong. And we kind of had. Three of the werecats stepped into the moon light and I recognized two of them. One was Dex, the monster, the other was Charlotte, the traitor. The third werecat was cream colored, and younger than Dex and Charlotte. She looked scared for only a moment before she put on a face trying to be brave.

"Ahh, Dillan and Red, I was wondering when I'd see you again!" Dex purred.

"The feeling isn't mutual." Red hissed to him.

"Your such a downer Red." Dex meowed, not caring for Red's hostile glare. "I was really hopeing to have some fun!"

"There will be know more 'fun'! You and your gang of criminals, are breaking the werecat code by being seen by a human, murdering said human, then leaving it for other humans to see! This type of behavior is unexceptionable for werecats."

"Again downer! I do suppose you don't like my gifts, do you?" He put on a face of fake sympathy. "They weren't really for you anyways. Did Mae like them?"

"You are mad." Red hissed.

"Red your so naive. There is no mad and sane. No good and bad. Just Us and Them. Are you sure that your on the winning side?" Dex said.

"Yes." Red retorted.

"What about you Dillan?"

"I know which side I belong to." I hissed.

"Very well. It's not my death." He said, then turned around and started to leave, "By the way, Dillan, I'm not a monster. And Charlotte's not a traitor."

My eyes opened wide with shock. How had he know that! I'd never said a word about it and yet Dex knew, he knew. Suddenly a anger started to burn inside of me.I thrust myself at Dex and he yowled in surprise. We started to lock in combat when I remembered the plan. I needed them to follow us.

Red ran away to were the trap was laid, and I followed. From the sound of pawsteps behind us, I knew the others had followed too. That's right. I thought. Take the bait. I ran to where our trap was laid, just outside of Mae's house. When we finally got there I was out of breath.

I saw a glint of silver from underneath the leaves and jumped over it. The werecat behind me wasn't as lucky and he ran straight over it, and fell into a pit. I knew he was dead now. The bottem of the pit was full of silver spikes. It was something even Red couldn't survive.

Dex and his followers didn't take notice of the fallen werecat and continued in pursuit, just like we hoped they would. I heard a yowl of annoyance and turned to see the cream werecat had gotten caught in a a silver net. She would be stuck there until someone got her down.

We kept running, getting closer to the members of the Order with each step. I heard another yowl and saw Charlotte had gotten stuck in the silver netting. One of the other werecats turned her head and she tripped over a wire. A second later a round of silver tipped arrows were fired at her forehead. She was dead a second after that.

Only Dex and a werecat I didn't know were left. We reached the clearing and me and Red jumped over the final silver net trap. We landed in a thud, and I realized we were practically at Mae's front door. The other werecat leaped over it with ease and stared at us, snarling. Dex didn't jump though. He walked slowly over the trap and was ensnared in a second.

The Order appeared from the bushes, and pointed their guns at the finally werecat, who froze with fear. Dex smiled though, a look I've never seen on him. It was a smile of pure madness. He unsheathed his claws and tore away the silver netting, like it was cobwebs. I heard a gasp of shock rise from the members of the Order.

I looked at Dex and he walked up to his fellow werecat, "I'm afraid you two joined the losing side of this battle." He hissed, looking at us.

That's when the sun rose. I hadn't noticed the first signs of dawn, appearing from the sides of the woods. I was so focused on not dying. Then a deafening sound of a gun sounded. The werecat at Dex's side dropped dead, and Dex jumped back. I looked for who delivered the blow. Not a single member of the Order had their gun's out.

"What the heck are you kids doing!" A voice sounded from behind. I turned around to see Mae's father, holding a rifle. I bit my lip as he came closer, he didn't seem to be paying much attention to the background, but rather Mae.

"Hey Dad..." Mae mumbled.

"I thought you were done with the Order business." He said, "Then I look out the window and see you fighting two werecats!"

"Look it's not my fault! It was the werecats who attacked us!" Mae said.

"When did they attack us?" Mae's Dad asked.

"When we lured them here." Mae grumbled.

"Then it is your fault. Why don't you ever take any responsibility for your actions." Mae's Dad went on giving a whole speech about that junk. I looked at Dex, who was trying to slink back into the woods like the cowered he was.

"Were are you going!" Red shouted. I looked like she had noticed him, too.

"Home." He said, calmly.

"Why would you go there cowered?" I hissed to him.

"I'm not a cowered." He hissed back.

"Prove it." I said. Dex glared at me and a met his gaze. Finally he walked to me until we were only a foot apart. Dex was a few inches shorter than me, but he was probably going to try to kill me. He was still staring furiously at me until his gaze saddened.

"I can't." He murmured, barely loud enough for me to hear. Then he walked away, I felt a pang of pity for him. He had a lot of power, a lot of potential, yet he was using it for the wrong things. Or maybe Nick was making him.

When he was almost to the trees another voice sounded, "Wait so Dex can just go?" Kyra said, "Like as he wants!"

"Yes!" Dex hissed, "I can! You don't control me."

"I never said I did!" Kyra muttered. Only she wasn't the only one with something to say. Dex and Mae's Dad looked up and stared straight at Dex. Dex didn't meet his gaze. Instead he turned to go into the forest, and vanished into the trees.
