Chapter 12 (Part 2): Beeps & Secret Weapons

Mae's POV

When my eyes fluttered open, all I heart was the steady, beep...beep...beep, of a heart rate monitor. I wasn't exactly sure were I was, but I knew were I wasn't. Cloudcroft. I thought I was in a hospital, at first, but there was nobody in the room. Nobody, besides a girl with brown hair, and red tips, dressed in all white, who was on her phone. She didn't seem like a nurse type.

I glanced around my room, as memories came flooding back to me. I wished I knew where I was, but I had no clue. I felt my stomach growl, and I wondered when the last time I'd eaten was. I think it was at Big Daddy's but I had not idea how long ago that was.

The lady glanced up, and she saw me awake. She left the room in swift movements, and I saw the brightly colored door. While the rest of the hospital style room was white, the door was lime green. It was hard to miss, and I wondered why the room was styled like that. After a few minutes, a man in a navy suite and dark blue eyes walked in.

"So how is my other little werecat doing?" He asked, formally, but before I could speak he said, "Don't try to speak, it'll only hurt. I'll ramble on while you recover your voice, don't you worry. So all I now about you is that your name is Mae, and you're a werecat. Your brother told me your name. And, yes he is fine."

"Wher--" I asked, before my voice cracked, and I was filled with a burning pain.

"Your brother is just across the hall. Now save your voice, it's my tern to speak." He said, sternly, as if he was my father, "Now I wish to formal welcome you to the Luner Claws Company. We are dedicated to helping werecats in need, such as yourself."

"I'm not in need." I said, my voice still a bit horse, but slowly returning.

"You were." He said. Then he got up and walked out the door. I wondered what he meant for a moment, but then the door opened again, and the lady returned. We sat in silence, for a long time before she got a call on her phone.

"Hello, sir." She said, formally, but I could still hear a trace of fear in her voice, "You think this is wise, sir? No, sir, I only meant--" She was cut off by screaming, even I could hear on the other line. "Yes, sir. Yes, sir." Finally she put down the phone and looked at me. She smiled a weak smile and mouthed something to me I couldn't understand.

As I waited, they brought me food, which I ate gladly. After that it seemed I was suddenly lacking in things to do. Back at home when ever that happened, I just went into the kitchen and cooked something. I remember when Dex and I still lived in Cloudcroft, and everything seemed right at the time. It was after we escaped from the facility. I tried to push away the thoughts, but they came in anyways, and I was lost in the memory.

.  .  .

Dex stared out the window, gazing to moon, when I walked into the room. The sweet smell of blueberry pie, broke his trance, and he looked at me happily. I gave him a slice and we sat on the couch and ate it, like the little monsters we were.

"Mae, why did you get all the good traits like cooking?" He said, playfully.

"Because someone needed to take them, and obviously you weren't the man for the job!" I teased back.

After a long pause, in which he was taking a particularity large bite out of his pie in, he finally said, "Sure you did."

"No really! Think about it!" I protested.

"I'm smarter, faster, and I got the better looks." He said.

"Smarter, maybe. Faster, no way. And better looks, have you seen yourself lately?"  I retorted, with a snort of laughter.

"I looked at myself in the pancake syrup this morning." He said, smiling.

"That doesn't count. You haven't looked in a mirror for over a week."

"Okay."  He said, "But I bet you didn't get this trait!" Before I could say another word, he grabbed my foot and started tickling it.

"Ahh! My weak spot! Stop!" I screamed, laughter, making it hard to breathe.

"Not until you beg for mercy!" He said, and started tickling me, even harder.

"Okay!" I finally said, and the torture stopped. He looked at me with expectant green eyes, before I threw all my weight on him and he fell to the ground.

"Get off of me!" He said, trying to push me off.

"Not until you beg for mercy!" I said, repeating his words.

"Never." He said, then kicked me in the stomach. We tumbled around for a while, acting more like five year olds than the mature teenagers we were.

"You want to play a game?" I asked him, and he rolled his eyes.

"Is this one of your lame games, like Tooty McFruity Game a Roony?" He asked, referring to a game I'd created when I was five years old. I'll spare the details, lets just say it involved a lot of pink, and glitter.

"That game was pure art work. And no. Besides this is a much more mature game, that only mature people play." I said, walking close to him, "Tag!" I said, before running out the door.

"That is no fair!"  I heard him whine in the distance, but I paid no attention to it and just kept running.

After about three miles, in a almost pure sprint, I finally decided there was no way Dex would ever be able to catch up unless he took the bus. I sat down on a nearby stump, and suddenly heard a rustle in the bushes. I felt my heart skip a beat as I caught a glimpse of fur. The werecats were here.

I heard another come from anther bush behind me, then someone threw a pine cone at me from a tree. I prepared myself for a pounce and my eyes darted from one bush to the next, looking for werecats. I felt hands grab my neck, and I struggled to scream, but as suddenly as they appeared, they disappeared.

"Tag."  A friendly voice said. I shot around to see Dex, standing by a tree, nearby.

"How the hell did you get here so bloody fast?" I screamed.

"I didn't take the bus." He said again. I felt my face heat into a blush, because that was exactly what I'd thought earlier.

"Let's just call it a draw. Besides I have some blueberry pie calling my name!" He said, and raced home. The only thing I didn't notice that day, was that his eyes were glowing red when he was standing by that tree.

.  .  .

I shook myself out of the memory. I couldn't remember if his eyes were really glowing red, or if I'd just imagined it. I didn't see it fully until after the pumpkin ball, where the werecats had attacked. I suddenly remembered the brown furred cat from the ball and felt my stomach twist. He had tried to kill people there. I guess I'd never put it together until now.

Another shocking thought occurred, to me. How long has he been a werecat? He said about four months, before I discovered him, which was back in late August, maybe September. I tried to remember anything, unusual from that time. He met Charlotte, I saw Charlotte, he started acting weird, his attack. There was something unusual about it.

I couldn't believe he'd been a werecat that entire time. He must be really good at keeping secrets. What if he had more... Stop. I just started trusting Dex again, now it seemed like I'm looking for a reason not to trust him. I suppose I'd ask him about it when I see him again.

I sat in the room, dark thoughts, running through my head. The lady in my room left and she wasn't replaced. It wasn't until I heard voices from outside of my door, that I broke out of my deep trance. I pressed my ear against the door to hear more.

"And if it goes wrong?" A voice asked. It sounded female, like one of those sweet ladies who welcomed you into a building.

"It won't." Another voice said. It belonged to a man, and he had a Australian accent.

"All of your plans go wrong." The lady grumbled.

"Hey don't worry about it. We'll just wait until the full moon and then you'll see." He said.

"What if someone gets suspicious?" She asked.

"It's only a few days away. Nobody can get suspicious, then get enough evidence to get us caught." He said.

"So why are we meeting of the restricted section of the building?" She asked, fretfully.

"There's no cameras here. No evidence for anyone to pull up." He said, coolly.

"Can you please remind me why we are doing this? It's not to late to back out now." She lady said.

"We need what ever is behind these doors to get power in this upside down world. If we can get a army of them, we'll be unstoppable." He said.

"But do you even know what is behind these doors?" The lady asked.

"No." He admitted, "But I do know they're powerful, and their power is at it's peak when the moon is full. They are secret weapons, capable of mass destruction. They can be controlled by gold, but not hing more." He said. I heard footsteps coming, and the two people talking left quickly. I suppose they heard them too.

My door opened and a man dressed in army style clothing walked in. He was holding a gun and his face showed no emotion. "Werecat 627 please stand up, and follow me." He said.

"Sir, yes sir." I said, sarcastically, then got up, and followed him into the unknown.

AN:

Hey guys! I'm so, so, so sorry for the late update. I've been having some major writer's block, and I had no idea what to do with this chapter. It's way to hard making chapters this long, in just a hospital room. That's why I had a flashback, and a secret meeting of kinds. I should have updated yesterday, but I had a little problem...

Anyways, enough excuses. I hate it when my books don't update in a while and the author just puts a petty excuse for a chapter. Any who if you have any ideas about what should happen next, then please say them! Remember to vote and comment! BYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Like the picture? I found it on Google Images myself! It's a reminder that last night was a full moon!
