Chapter 10: Storytellers & Idiots
Dex's POV
When I woke up, the first thing I noticed was I wasn't in the Cellar, thank god. The next thing was that I was laying in the woods, pine needles entangled in my short brown hair. Mae was near by, still asleep.
My body felt stiff from sleeping on the ground, where the snow had been scraped from the ground. We had been sleeping next to a frozen water fall so it must be cold, only I didn't feel a thing. I could taste something though, blood.
I tried to recall the memories of the night, but they were mostly fuzzy, as normal. I couldn't held feeling the slightest bit betrayed by Nick. He knew I hated it when he took complete control.
I was pretty sure we'd killed a man, maybe two. I thought there were two. Only I could only remember killing one. Maybe Mae took care of the other or I couldn't remember it for some reason. Only I still had a strange feeling something was wrong.
I saw Mae sit up lazily, not bothering to open her eyes, "Hey Dex." She murmured, and finally decided to open her eyes. She looked around wildly. Not knowing were she was.
"Sup Mae?" I returned casually.
"What went wrong last nigh?" She said panicking, "I remember feeling so good, then I lost control. Everything was blurry, and you sounded different. Then, oh god, did we kill someone?"
"Welcome to being a werecat! Lesson one, never give your cat full control. That's hardest on full moons, when you get strong negative emotions, touch Moon Shade, or as we proved last night, during a new moon." I responded, with fake cheerfulness.
"So, Lana took control of me, and Nick took control of you?" Mae asked.
"Like when you pissed me off in the werecat dungeons." I said, giving her an example. It doesn't hurt so much now.
"Sorry about that." She muttered. Just as the words left her lips, a sound of bushes moving cut in and we both let out low hisses.
Then Xander cut through the brush and look at us with relief in his eyes. "Thank god I found you." He said, the slightest bit annoyed, "You crazy cats! Do you know what you two did?" He added.
"Yep." I said, as if I couldn't careless, which wasn't true. I was just trying to get on his nerves.
"You murdered someone, again. You made me chase you all night and now I'm tired and hungry."
"Great let's go get breakfast." Mae said, trying to change the subject, "I still got cash for days and you said you were hungry."
"Fine but your not off the hook." He said seriously.
"Okay... Dad!" With that I started sprinting towards town. Today was already looking bright.
. . .
As we swung open the door to Dave's, a man was talking loudly, and a small crowd of people were gathered around him. We chose a seat nearby so I turned around and listened.
"So there I was. It was almost midnight now, and the fire burned low. Me and old Freddy were laying in our tents enjoying the night, when Freddy sees a pair of glowing red eyes." The man says. I continue to listen, but uneasiness was forming in my stomach.
"What happened next?" Another man asked.
"Well Freddy grabs his gun, and fires! It went straight between the eyes. The bullet bounced off it, and hit a nearby tree. The thing in the bushes let out a unholy hiss. It drew closer, and soon we could make out what it was. It stood on all fours, had a pelt of brown fur, and it had those horrible red eyes." I knew that matched the description of me and Mae. I thought there were two men.
"What then?" A young man asked.
"The monster resembled a mountain lion except the coloring was wrong and it was much to big. The Beast pounced, and it grabbed Freddy's leg and shook it wildly. It ignored Freddy's screams. I was about to tackle the Beast but there was another, it looked exactly like the first only it was bigger. It sunk it's claws into my chest, but I kicked it away. It smashed the tent down on me. It must have thought it had killed me, because I stopped moving. I was trapped in the tent, but I still saw Freddy fighting for his life. Finally the smaller one pinned him down, and I thought he was gone for. The smaller moved aside for the bigger and it got real close to Freddy's face. Only Freddy grabbed his silver knife, and stabbed it into the Beast's chest." He said. I remembered that part. It hurt, a lot.
"Why did you mention it was silver?" Asked someone from the growing crowd.
"Freddy always had that damned thing with him. He was always paranoid about the supernatural." Said someone else.
"Amen, brother." Replied a third.
"Now, where was I? Oh yes! So the Beast stumbled back, suffering from a blow that should have killed it. Only it didn't. The wound began to stop bleeding, then the first regrets, then it's hair. The Beast let out a low hiss, even worse than the first. The littler one back away, and the other one lunged for Freddy's throat. I knew he was dead now. The small one grabbed Freddy and started to pull him away. While the bigger one, rose itself to its hind legs, looked around to make sure nobody had witnessed his crime then walked off, like a man! I thought they had eaten Freddy, but when I finally got back to town, there he was! Laying in the middle of the road, surrounded by cops."
"Is it true?" Asked a pretty young woman.
"Every word of it." He said.
"How big was the Beast?" A old man asked.
The man who told the story looked around the audience and his eye landed on me. I gulped nervously. "Stand up boy." He said, I did as I was told, and he looked at me. After a few moments he finally decided, " A few inches taller than him." The crowd still buzzed with questions, but I turned away.
Mae looked at me with concern in her green eyes, "What's wrong, Dex?" She asked. I guess she didn't listen in to his story, "Don't like the art of storytelling?" She teased.
"No it's fine, as long as it's not about us." I whispered through gritted teeth.
"What?" Mae and Xander asked in unison.
I quickly explained what the guy had said, and seen. As I explained I became anxious and I felt my eyes turn red. Dang how I hated strong emotions.
"We should leave. He could make a connection to you two, and Dex's red eyes aren't helping." Xander said.
We all got up, and since we hadn't even ordered yet, there was no since in paying. After walking back through the door, I glanced at the crowd once more, through a window. I met the storyteller's gaze and his eyes opened wide with shock. I just smelled and sprinted off to catch up with Xander and Mae.

Mae's POV
"Are you sure we have to do this?" Dex whined. "I mean what if Dad throughs me in the Cellar again. What if he throughs us all in the Cellar!"
"We need to go back and face the consequences for our actions. Besides Xander still has his towel." I said.
"But that's the mature thing to do. I say dance to dawn and sing till dusk. Only with more sleeping, than singing." He said, and I just rolled my eyes. He was so childish.
"We will be punished because we did something wrong." I said simply.
"No. We'll be punished 'cause we're different! It's being racist and I won't stand for it! It wasn't my choice to get bitten, or be related to a werecat. You guys too." He said with a huff.
"Dex quit being over dramatic, besides it's not racist, it speciesist, or whatever and that won't happen. Also, you seemed fairly in control when you attack us a few weeks ago."
"You attacked me. " He muttered.
"And you need to have a long time out for all the people you killed. So we might all deserve some time in the Cellar."
"I think Mae's right." Xander said. "You two need some time in the Cellar. I on the other hand never murdered anyone."
"Neither have I!" I protested.
"You helped Dex murder someone." Xander pointed out.
"Well you--" I was cut off when JJ and Zay appeared from the brush.
"You returned the escaped werecat." JJ said, "I thought he was gone for good."
"First of all my name isn't werecat." Dex hissed, sounding more like the werecat him, than the real him, "Second Rag boy and sis over the rest me out!"
"Is that true?" Zay asked us.
"Yes it is Happy. So take me away! I long to be served the crap by Cat Food again!" He said, dramatically.
"Okay werecat." JJ responded, before slapping on a pair of gold looking handcuffs. Dex's eyes went wide, and he yowled in pain, as the gold burned away his flesh.
"Take those off him." I demanded.
"No, what harm did they ever do you? Besides he won't come quietly any other way." JJ said.
"Take them off." Xander ordered.
"Do it yourself." Zay said, coldly. When Xander didn't move Zay looked at him oddly, "You have something to hide, Xander?" Zay asked.
"Ya. You've been acting a bit to chummy with a werecat, if you ask me." JJ said.
"Your insane." He hissed.
"Prove it." JJ challenged, "Free the werecat." Xander looked down, and didn't move.
"Thought so." Zay said. I watched him slap a pair or golden cuffs on Xander as he shut his eyes, but the screamed with pain, as well.
"What about you, Miss Werecat Lover?" JJ said, "You one of them too?"
I looked at JJ straight in the eye. I moved closer, to where we were hardly a foot apart. Then I punched the jerk in the face. He fell back, and I knew I'd knocked him out. I turned to Zay who ran at me, knife out. I ducked under his blow then kicked him in the shins. He fell to the ground and I knocked him out. I grabbed his key and unlocked the handcuffs on Dex and Xander.
"Thanks Mae." Xander said gratefully.
"Look I have instant bracelets!" Dex joked. I just rolled my eyes.
"Grab one of the idiots, we'll take them back with us." I said.
"We're still going back? After what just happened?" Dex said, bewildered.
"Of course." I say said.
Dex just muttered under his breath and I ignored it. He then grabbed JJ and Xander grabbed Zay. With that, we headed back into the great unknown.
