Chapter 21: Deals & Goat Blood
Mae's POV
RED LOOKED AT US, HER brown eyes burning with power. It was a look that many of werecats had worn, but most of them were tyrants. Red is my friend. I thought. I only hoped she thought the same.
"Answer me." She hissed to my Uncle.
"Well... I was just... umm..." He stuttered.
"Well?" She said, clearly impatient. My Uncle glanced from Red to me to Dex. Red took the hint.
"Hullo, Red." Dex said, smoothly.
"Nickolas." She hissed, "I thought I told you to leave Dex alone."
"Well, I did. He was the one that let me in." Dex or Nickolas, said.
"What do you mean?" Red asked, shocked, "Dex would never let you in, not without a fight."
"He gave up on fighting, but I suppose you won't be so easy to destroy." Nick sneered. Suddenly he shifted into a cat. Brown fur, and red eyed, he looked like he we was ready to kill.
"So be it." Red sneered. She shifted as well. She grew long white fur and she had the same glowing eyes as Nick did.
The two powerful werecats looked at each other, ready to fight. I saw Nick readying himself for a pounce, right on Red's back. I hoped Red saw the the same thing. I saw Red brace herself, and Nick pounced, only not on Red's back, her feet.
Red yowled furiously as she was unbalanced. She scratch furiously at Nick but as soon as blood appeared, the wound healed itself. Nick bit Red, hard, on her leg. She screeched in pain. Her wound healed itself, only not as fast as Nick's did.
Nick then got to his feet, and hissed some words to Red, she panted heavily and she hissed back to him. Nick's ears flattened and he grunted angrily. Red looked thoughtfully, then she shifted back into her human form. Nick followed, her action.
"Werecats of the Pride. I've been offered a deal. Nick will leave the Pride and never return, as long as nobody in this camp, harms him." Red shot an icy cold glare at me, to let me know I was apart of his deal too, "If someone does, they will be destroyed, with no mercy. Along with this camp, and everyone in it. Do you, the people of the Pride, except?"
One by one the werecats nodded, until it came to my Uncle. He looked at Nick without fear. "I do not accept your offer, Nick." He said.
"An unwise move-" Nick started.
"I would rather you joined my Pride. You are a strong fearless werecat, if you joined then you would be respected by the werecats, not feared. Do you accept my offer?"
Nick smiled a cruel smile then finally said, "Yes." Then he walked towards me. "You have poisoned me sister. You thought you could tame the cat within, with petty magic tricks. Sister, Dex wants to let you know, that all the death that happens, all the pain I cause, it is your fault, and he will never forgive you for it."
"Your Nick, right?" I asked, curiously.
"Yes, why must you ask this?" he said, thoughtfully.
"Why did you call me sister?" I demanded.
A grin, appeared upon his face. Not one of pleasure, but of wickedness, and hate. "You and I may not be brother and sister but there is someone inside of you that knows me, and you know them. You have denied their existence, for too long. You carry the same blood as I. The blood of the alpha, and there is no stopping the cat within." With that he turned away. My Uncle looked at him curiously but he ignored it. I saw him mutter something to the guard. He nodded and grabbed my wrist. I was too shocked from Nick's words to protest.
We finally made our way back down to the dungeon. Xander and Dillan were standing at the bars waiting for me. The guard tossed me in and went back up the stairs, most likely to celebrate their new pride members, Nick and Charlotte.
"So what happened?" Xander asked, eagerly. "When I got back with Dillan the door was back up and locked."
"Dex fought with Red. I don't know who won but now he is part of their Pride." I said.
"This isn't good." muttered Dillan, "No this isn't good at all."
"You're telling me." I muttered back.
"You don't know what your talking about. If they join the Pride then we might all die. There will be no use for us."
"Like we have a use now." I sighed.
"We do. I'm alive because Red's alive. You're alive because Dex is alive, not Nick, Dex. Xander is alive because he knows secrets, the werecats want."
"How do you know about Nick?"
"Long story."
"So what are we going to do to get out?" I asked.
"Well I have a plan, but you guys aren't going to like it." Xander said.
"So be it." I said.

Dex's POV
I sat in a chair, drinking something out of a glass. I wasn't sure what it was, but it sure did taste good. Charlotte lay on a couch near me and had changed from the rags she was wearing to a blue dress. My Uncle was in the room too, in a chair next to me, drinking the same stuff I was.
"So Nick, how do you like the Pride so far?" He asked.
"Please, I prefer Dex. Nick is a part of me, but he isn't me." I said. "I do like the Pride though."
"Well that's good. Very good. Do you feel bad that your sister is put away?"
"I could care less to what happens to her." I muttered. Then louder I asked, "I heard something about a prophecy... Is it true?"
"Well I guess we won't know for three weeks right?" He said, then let out a laugh. I didn't. Instead I took a long drink, of whatever was in that drink.
I see you like your new Pride. I heard Nick, gloat.
Yes. They're great. I'm glad I listened to you, for once. I said.
I am right a lot, but we still have lots of work to do.
What do you mean?
I mean we have to get you to stop caring, about your sister.
I don't care about her.
I am you, Dex. Don't forget I can tell when you're lying.
So what if I do? I've known her since I was little. She's my sister for goodness sake.
Yet she would kill you in a heartbeat.
I shook Nick's words out of my head. I didn't want to think about that now. Or ever really. I knew he was right but I just couldn't think like that. Or I didn't want or think like that. I took another sip of my drink, while my Uncle looked at me with unsteady eyes.
"What?" I asked, defensively.
"Oh nothing. It's just that most werecats hardly take two sips of that." he said.
"Why? What is in it?" I asked.
"Goat blood." he said. I felt it choke in my throat. I poured out what was left in the glass on the ground.
"I'm going out." I said and left the den. I walked deep into the woods and sat down on a log. I let my mind drift back to Cloudcroft. I wondered about my Dad, and hoped he was alright. I bet he was sick with worry. Both of his kids didn't return home.
I wasn't sure how long I sat there or why I did it, but I did. I watched the moon set three times before I finally got up. I had thought over everything I could. My throat hurt because I hadn't had anything to drink. When I finally returned to camp, many cats gave me suspicious glances. I tried to ignore them but it was getting hard.
I found some water and drank it thirstily. I then went back into the woods. I knew I was a part of the Pride now but I didn't feel comfortable in their camp. I found a peaceful spot in the woods and let myself drift off into a uneasy sleep.
