Chapter 17: Red Eyes & Werecat Prides

Mae's POV

I WAS WALKING HOME, THAT night, from my date when I saw Dex. He was just coming out of a shop, and he had a large book in his arms. I sprinted up to him and he smiled when he saw me.

"Hey Mae. What's up?" He asked.

"Just walking home. What do you have there?" I asked, gesturing to the book.

"Nothing important. I do want to ask you something though. Do you know where our Uncle lives? Dad mentioned him and... well... I just wanted to meet him." Dex said, slowly, almost like he didn't want to ask me. Which was a good instinct.

My eyes narrowed as Dex said those words. I knew exactly what happened to our Uncle. He was my Dad's brother. He was also a werecat. He was sent to kill my mom but my dad stopped him. My mom and dad grew closer together and soon got married, and had Dex and I.

My Uncle had run deep into the woods and my mom tracked him for many years. One night she finally found him. She was overwhelmed with cats and had to flee. My Uncle had created what he called a pride of werecats, as him as their alpha. The terrifying truth was that I had alpha blood in my veins. That could make me a werecat, luckily I'm still normal and so is Dex.

"Yeah, I know where he is..." I started.

"But?" Dex asked, sensing my worries.

"But he's a cat." I said. I saw Dex's eyes light up with interest, as I continued, "He's extremely dangerous, so it would be bad if you went searching for him."

"Mae. I need to find him." Dex said, his eyes dead serious.

"Why?"

"I can't explain it. I just need to."

"It's too dangerous."

"Mae. Either you tell me now, or I'll find out on my own." Dex said. Our eyes locked and we started to stare each other down. Suddenly Dex's normally green eyes turned red and his pupils turned into slits. I felt weakness spread threw out my body. I knew that stare, I'd seen it somewhere before.

Suddenly the words started spilling out of my mouth, "He lives northwest of here. Still in the Lincoln Forest but not by much."

"Thanks sis." He said, eyes still glowing red, and voice that I hardly recognized. He smiled a eerie smile, handed me his book, then walked off, although my thoughts didn't leave as easily. The question kept returning to my head, Where had I seen those eyes? Heard that voice? Then it hit me and my eyes opened wide in shock. The party! I then sprinted down the street, there was someone I needed to see.

Dex's POV

I don't know what you're complaining about, Nick was saying, I got us the information we needed to find your uncle.

Yes, but Mae now could know our secret.

She doesn't. She is just a puny, weak human. There's no way she could have figured it out.

Need I remind you that she was a member of the Order?

Don't worry Dex, I got this under control.

I sighed, knowing that Nick could not be swayed. He had reappeared in my head a few days ago. I guess it was because he was getting stronger. Or I was becoming more werecat like. I didn't know which one scared me more.

I started into the woods heading northwest. As much as I hated it I knew Nick was right, he got us the information we needed to find my Uncle. I now knew he was a werecat, like me, so hopefully he'll recognize me. Or well not kill me.

As I continued onward I felt a pang of loneliness. I wish it could be different, that I could have Charlotte or even Mae by my side. Only Charlotte was still missing and Mae didn't want me to do this. I shook off the thought and changed into my cat. Then I continued into the night, ready to get this over with.

.  .  .

I sniffed the air slightly, letting the new scents drift into my nose. I never realized how different the air could smell even if I was just a few miles away. There were no harsh lights, no pollution, no sounds of a city, even a sleeping one. I was in the true wilderness now.

Nick had been extremely quiet threw out the entire trip which, as much as it pained me to say, drove my loneliness even harder. By midnight I was done. I laid down, not even bothering to change into my human form and fell into a dreamless sleep.

.  .  .

"Do you think he's dead?" A voice asked, as it awoke me from my sleep.

"Hush Lily. I think he's waking up." Another replied to the first.

I shook myself awake and blinked open my eyes. I then jumped to my feet in shock. In front of me stood two werecats. The first one, Lily I think, was a small cream colored one and she looked a few years younger than me at most.  The other was a black colored cat was grey eyes. He was quite big, I'll say that much. He looked older than me.

"Hi there!" Lily said to me. "Are you a werecat? Or just a normal cat? Do you understand what I'm saying?"

I stepped back, still slightly surprised by the newcomers. Every muscle in my body was on alert. Even though I didn't think theses cats meant to cause harm, I wanted to be safe. My ears flattened and a low hiss escaped my lips.

We should just kill them. It would be easier than this whole drama show. Nick said.

Will you just be quiet! I screamed in reply. Luckily he listened.

I then refocused my attention to the situation. The black cat had a hostile glare at me now and his muscles were tense, in case I pounced. Lily, however, was as friendly as before. She looked at me with kind eyes, she was too trusting, like me.

"Lily, he's a werecat, I can smell it. As for understanding I'm not sure." The black one said, "I want you to leave. Go get some help, even though I don't think we'll need it."

"But Sparrow!" Lily whined. Sparrow silenced her with a glare and she bounded off into the woods. Sparrow then sat down, but never took my eyes off me.

"Do you speak?" He asked me, slowly. Almost like talking to a toddler.

"Yes." I said, harshly. I hated being talked to like I was a child.

"What's your name?" He asked me.

"Why would I tell you?" I hissed.

"Don't play games, boy. I'm not the one who invaded someone's territory. A rouge no less. So tell me. What is your name?" Sparrow said, boldly. I, honestly, didn't know anything about rouges or territories. Well more or less. To be fair I didn't think monsters even existed until a few months ago.

"Dex." I replied, after a long silence. I didn't move after that, other than when I laid down. I put a paw over my face and tried to sleep. It was considerably hard, knowing Sparrow was watching me. Finally Lily returned, a few other cats at her side.

"Sparrow! I'm back. Did you fight? Did you win? Hey why is he sleeping?" Lily said, wanting to know everything.

"Relax Lily. He's just a rogue, named Dex." Sparrow said.

"Did you get him to talk?" Lily asked.

"Of course. How else would I know his name." Sparrow snapped to Lily. Then he glanced at me and added, "He seems to be aggressive. I think we should take him. What do you think Dew?"

"I agree. Aggressive werecats should be taken in. He could be the one we've looking for." Responded a dark grey cat.

"Get up." Sparrow said to me.

"No." I said. I wasn't going to play prisoner to some other people, not again. Sparrow looked at me with anger burning bright in his eyes. He raised a paw and swiped it across my muzzle, scratching my face.

"Get up!" He said again. I listened this time and rose to my feet. I felt a deep hatred for Sparrow at that moment, a feeling I had grown to resent. It meant Nick was here.

I collapsed suddenly as Nick started to control my mind. I knew what would happen next. Either we would die or the cats would. Most likely us. We were way outnumbered.

"Why do you--" Sparrow started, but he noticed the look on my face, the look of pain, and agony and he stopped.

"Get out of my head!" I screamed. Suddenly the anger vanished, along with Nick, and I regained full control of my body. That wasn't to bad. I thought as I got to my feet. Then I noticed the confused looks of the werecats around me. A icy silence spread between us.

Finally Lily broke it. "What just happened to you?" She asked. I just shook my head and watched the rest of the group.

"We should go." Dew said slowly. All of the werecats rose and started walking. I walked in the center of their group. All I wished for was to go home. Why did I even leave? I thought. It continued to haunt me the rest of the way to their camp.

.  .  .

About half way there Lily finally got bored and started her game of twenty questions with me again. I started to think she did this a lot.

"So Dex... Will you talk to me?" She said finally. I hadn't answered a one of her questions before.

"No. I will not talk to you." I said harshly, I was at my breaking point.

"You just did! I do that all the time. I annoy people then ask then that and they normally say no so, I do what I just did. So now that you're talking to me will you answer one question?"

"Sure. That was it. Thanks for your conversation." I said, hoping she would take a hint.

"What that's no fair!" She said, "I'll ask a question and you have to answer it. So here we go. Why are you--" She trailed off, as her eyes opened wide, "How did your face heal so fast?"

I touched my face with my paw and realized the scratches were gone. I had never had anything heal so quickly. It was almost like the time when Nick scratched Red. Only a bit slower.

"I have no idea." I said to Lily, letting the shock come out of my voice.
