SEASON 2, EPISODE 4
abomination
STILES LED THE way to the principal's office as the two tip-toed through the pitch-black school, feeling a cool memory wash over them of the last time they had been in school after hours. They kept the dread to themselves, but it gripped both of them in a faint worry that something would go wrong. The two kept their eyes peeled for any other rebellious teenagers sneaking off to roam around the school... or worse.
⠀⠀⠀When they made it to Principal Argent's office, they relaxed just enough to keep them from freaking out in the middle of their plan. Willow looked left then right and turned to Stiles, who stood a little too close to her.
⠀⠀⠀"Watch out," Willow whispered to him, and he nodded, realizing where he was, and stepped out of her way. "Facilis aperit."
⠀⠀⠀"You are so cool," Stiles whispered to Willow.
⠀⠀⠀For Willow, hiding who she was for so long ended up with her forgetting what she was capable of. Even just opening a door with a couple of words and intention was more than Stiles or Lydia, or even Scott could do in the same amount of time. She knew she didn't use her magic to its maximum potential at every turn she could.
⠀⠀⠀She'll look at media like Harry Potter or even Wizards of Waverly Place that she had seen a couple of times and think that she doesn't use magic nearly as much as them. Then again, the witches and wizards in Harry Potter go to a school made for it, and Wizards of Waverly Place's magic system is simple and not as hard to learn as it is to learn a dead language. Willow loved magic, used it when she could, but at the same time, just like with her school work, it was a lot to learn. She became tired of learning and trying to remember and memorize spells all the time.
⠀⠀⠀Willow turned to look at Stiles and smiled thinly, accepting the compliment, and walked into the room with him. Stiles clapped his hands, rubbing his palms together as they looked around the room.
⠀⠀⠀"Where does a crazy old hunter keep his bestiary?" he muttered, both looking for a place to start.
⠀⠀⠀"I'll try the bookshelf," Willow stated, pointing her thumb over her shoulder.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles nodded, then mimicked her action to the desk behind him.
⠀⠀⠀"I'll take the desk," he stated.
⠀⠀⠀They separated, walking to their respective stations. Stiles moved around papers on top of the desk to ensure it wasn't in plain sight, then lent down to dig through the drawers. Willow pulled books as she glossed over them, seeing if any might possibly open a door on the other side of the wall. It hadn't been long that the Argent's had snaked their way into the school, but you never know. They might just have built another room on the other side of the principal's office.
⠀⠀⠀No longer than two minutes had passed when Willow nearly jumped out of her skin.
⠀⠀⠀"This is not what I was expecting to find," Blair said from the doorway of the office.
⠀⠀⠀Willow turned to Blair, who looked strangely unaffected by her girlfriend... Girlfriend? Were they girlfriends? Neither had committed to a label... and her ex-boyfriend rummaging through the principal's office. They were on opposite sides of the room, obviously not making out or doing anything else but still.
⠀⠀⠀"Uh, we're uh—We're, we're—" Stiles struggled to say, but he stumbled over his words nearly as bad as Jackson trying to lie to Argent.
⠀⠀⠀"Stiles was able to find that book he had asked me about earlier," Willow explained, taking over the situation and motioning her hand toward him. "But he ended up getting it taken up by Harris, no less," she finished, rolling her eyes.
⠀⠀⠀Blair looked between the two and sighed, her shoulders slumping forward, and she shook her head as she pressed her hand against her forehead.
⠀⠀⠀"Oh," Blair sighed, letting out a small laugh as she looked back up at them. "I'm so sorry. I had a really bad experience with my ex and I just, my trust issues—"
⠀⠀⠀Willow thought Blair hadn't seemed that affected by the situation, more like she didn't really care.
⠀⠀⠀Then, she thought about her own sister, Laurel, when dealing with her emotions and how she shut down on people when feeling put to the sidelines. Like she had been lately. Willow frowned, walking across the office and to Blair as she stood in front of her.
⠀⠀⠀"Hey," Willow started, her hands on Blair's hips as she looked into her eyes. "I'm sorry, I should have told you what we were doing."
⠀⠀⠀"Next time, okay?" Blair stated, pointing her finger at Willow's chest with a stern expression before leaning in and pecking Willow's lips.
⠀⠀⠀"Okay," Willow smiled.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles coughed loudly to interrupt the two about to lean in for a kiss again, and the two girls turned to look at him. He stood at the desk, one hand leaning against it while his eyebrows were raised as he looked between them. He seemed slightly irritated but instead passed it off as them being in the principal's office.
⠀⠀⠀"Sorry, but we are trespassing. We gotta look before someone finds us," Stiles explained, shrugging his shoulders.
⠀⠀⠀"Right, sorry," Willow sighed, rolling her eyes as she looked back at Blair with a tired smile. "Would you help me?"
⠀⠀⠀"Of course," Blair assured her with a wide smile. "What are we looking for again?"
⠀⠀⠀"Um, it's called a, uh, bestiary," Willow said quickly. The moment she processed what she and Stiles were doing, Willow wished she had sent Blair away or left Stiles on his own to keep her out of the way. No use now.
⠀⠀⠀"Ooh, that sounds interesting," Blair stated, nodding her head as they stood at the bookshelves. "Like a book on vampires, werewolves, witches?"
⠀⠀⠀"What?" Stiles asked, poking his head up to look at her.
⠀⠀⠀Blair furrowed her brows into confusion, turning back to look at him.
⠀⠀⠀"You know, like Twilight or Harry Potter?" Blair explained, quirking her eyebrow in amusement. "Have you seen those or re-watching Star Trek to even notice new things are coming out?" she teased him.
⠀⠀⠀"I'll have you know I watch Star Wars, not Star Trek," Stiles spat like the difference was dirt in his mouth. He rolled his eyes, and Stiles sighed, continuing, "No, it's just a collection of different beasts. Both real and not. Whales, vipers, griffins, you name it."
⠀⠀⠀"Okay," Blair whispered, turning back around and glancing at Willow with a smile in amusement at Stiles' defensiveness over Star Wars. Willow returned the look with a roll of her eyes once again before they returned to their search.
⠀⠀⠀They had gone through every book, every drawer, looked between any furniture that lined up with the wall, everything, and still came up with nothing. Stiles was hopeless, rubbing the back of his head, but they were out of luck. There was nowhere else to look.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles announced to the girls that he'd let Allison he found nothing, and the three were about to turn to leave when yet another voice had them jumping out of fright.
⠀⠀⠀"Hello, Stiles," Erica greeted him with a wide grin lined in seductive red lipstick and a twisted glint in her eye as she trapped them in the room.
⠀⠀⠀"Oh, shit," Willow muttered.
⠀⠀⠀Erica's doe brown eyes turned to the couple just behind Stiles, her smile turning up into a smirk as she caught Willow's eyes.
⠀⠀⠀"You two can go if you'd like," Erica said, glancing from Willow then to Blair almost knowingly. Like she knew they wouldn't want her to see what would happen next. "I only need Stiles."
⠀⠀⠀"Over my dead body," Willow snapped back without thinking, her hand reaching out to Blair, who watched the three in confusion.
⠀⠀⠀"Willow," Stiles hissed.
⠀⠀⠀Willow turned to him, knowing he had said it from her statement. When she looked at him, he shook his head like he had back at the hospital when they were trapped in the room with Argent. Blair didn't know about her powers, and they didn't know if Derek had told his new pack everything about Beacon Hills yet. It was better, for now, to keep the upper hand.
⠀⠀⠀"That's not a problem," Erica told Willow, raising her hand and extending her claws with a smug raise of her eyebrows.
⠀⠀⠀Blair gasped from beside Willow, jumping closer to her side and holding tightly onto her arm.
⠀⠀⠀Erica chuckled, lowering her hand as she stared at Blair in amusement, and they knew she had only done it to rile up her nerves.
⠀⠀⠀"Derek said we can't kill you," Erica sighed, pouting as she looked back at Willow. "Didn't say I couldn't have some fun. Come on," she told them.
⠀⠀⠀She winked at Willow before reaching forward and pulling Stiles down with her hand.
⠀⠀⠀"I've only got two hands and three of you, and there's one," Erica told them, looking at Blair, who stared back with wide, frightened eyes. "That I can get rid of. So, either you come with me, or I claw her throat out."
⠀⠀⠀Willow gulped at Erica's threat, knowing she wasn't bluffing. She looked at Blair, who stared back at her, and she looked absolutely terrified. Willow knew she shouldn't have done anything she had that night. Her whole head scrambled between two masks she put on. She couldn't do anything, so she turned back to Erica and nodded.
⠀⠀⠀They followed after Erica as she led them to the pools and stopped when she released Stiles with Derek standing ahead of them. Erica took her place beside Derek, staring back at the three with her smug smile still across her face.
⠀⠀⠀"The girlfriend wouldn't leave," Erica explained to him before Derek even asked. "And the blonde is collateral damage."
⠀⠀⠀Derek nodded.
⠀⠀⠀"What did you see at the mechanics garage?" Derek asked Stiles, getting straight to the point.
⠀⠀⠀"Um, several alarming EPA violations that I'm seriously considering reporting," Stiles recollected knowing Derek wasn't asking about the actual garage but the creature that had paralyzed him while there.
⠀⠀⠀Derek smiled at Stiles' response, taking the basketball in his hands and deflating it with just his claws.
⠀⠀⠀"Oh, my God," Blair whispered, her voice shaking as she raised her hand to her mouth, the other squeezing Willow's until she was sure her bone cracked.
⠀⠀⠀"I'm sorry," Willow whispered, turning to her.
⠀⠀⠀Blair glanced up at her, nodding hesitantly but was unsure how to respond otherwise.
⠀⠀⠀"Let's try that again," Derek told Stiles.
⠀⠀⠀"All right," Stiles relented. "The thing was pretty slick looking. Um, skin was dark. Kind of patterned. Uh, I think I actually saw scales. Is that enough? Okay, because I have somebody I really need to talk to."
⠀⠀⠀Derek only stared at Stiles, waiting for him to continue.
⠀⠀⠀"Ugh!" Stiles exclaimed, growing frustrated. "And it's got a tail, too. Are we good?"
⠀⠀⠀Derek and Erica's faces paled when he had finished like they knew exactly what he was talking about and feared for their own lives as well as theirs.
⠀⠀⠀"Wait, have you seen it?" Stiles asked, furrowing his brows at their expressions. "You have this look on your faces like you know exactly what I'm talking about!"
⠀⠀⠀It was too late. Derek and Erica recognized Stiles' description based on the creature creeping toward them, staring down at the group with slitted eyes.
⠀⠀⠀It jumped from the stairwell it had been on, between Stiles and Blair on one side and Willow on the other. Stiles and Blair were able to move out of the way, Stiles dragging Blair back with him while Willow tried to fall back, but one of its claws scraped against her cheek before she was able to get entirely out of the way. The creature continued forward, slamming into Erica and knocking her out from the force of her hitting the wall.
⠀⠀⠀Derek tried to force the creature back with a roar, but the creature clawed him too without a beat.
⠀⠀⠀"Derek, Willow!" Stiles exclaimed, frantically looking between the two. "Oh, God, Blair! Hold Willow! Come on!"
⠀⠀⠀They ran to the two that had been cut while Willow could feel the effects of the scratch sink down her cheek and into her limbs as she began to stumble on her feet, knees starting to give out. Blair caught her before she could fall against the tile.
⠀⠀⠀"What's happening?!" Blair shouted at Stiles.
⠀⠀⠀"The thing has paralyzing agents in its claws!" he shouted back. "Where is it? Can you see it?" he continued, looking around the pool while Derek weighed heavy on his shoulders.
⠀⠀⠀Willow leaned toward the side without realizing, dragging both herself and Blair into the pool. On the other hand, Stiles had tried to call Scott for help but ended up letting Derek slip from his hands and into the pool. Stiles dove in after him, holding Derek above water when he was able to pull him up and Blair did the same for Willow.
⠀⠀⠀"Where did it go?" Stiles asked frantically. "Do you guys see it?"
⠀⠀⠀"No," Derek muttered.
⠀⠀⠀"Okay, maybe it took off," Stiles said hopefully, but their short-lived relief was cut off by the creature hissing.
⠀⠀⠀"Maybe not," Derek sighed.
⠀⠀⠀It wasn't even thirty seconds they were in the water before Derek started complaining.
⠀⠀⠀"Can you get me out of here before I drown?" Derek snapped at Stiles.
⠀⠀⠀"You're worried about drowning?" Stiles scoffed at him. "Did you notice the thing out there with multiple rows of razor-sharp teeth?"
⠀⠀⠀"Did you notice I'm paralyzed from the neck down in eight feet of water?" Derek snapped back.
⠀⠀⠀"You're not the only one, buddy!" Willow snapped at him, spitting water out as it splashed into her mouth.
⠀⠀⠀"You're lucky I work out," Blair muttered, keeping Willow's arm around her shoulders as she trod the water for them.
⠀⠀⠀"Okay," Stiles relented. "I don't see it."
⠀⠀⠀Stiles started to move to the edge of the pool when Derek yelled at him to stop. Not far from them, the creature was on all fours, hissing and glaring at them as it paced the pool, taunting them.
⠀⠀⠀"What's it waiting for?" Blair asked.
⠀⠀⠀The creature began to move towards them, and Willow forced her eyes shut, not wanting to watch her own death. However, it was a minute of sitting like that before Stiles forced her eyes open.
⠀⠀⠀"Wait did you see that?" he exclaimed, turning to look at Derek then back at Willow and Blair. "I don't think it can swim."
TWO HOURS HAD passed, and the four were still stuck in the pool. Stiles and Blair were exhausted from trying to keep the paralyzed pair afloat, but by now, it seemed like no end was in sight.
⠀⠀⠀"Okay. Okay," Stiles panted in defeat. "I don't think I can do this much longer." He glanced at his phone on the side of the pool, and Derek caught where he was looking.
⠀⠀⠀"No, no, no!" Derek shouted. "Don't even think about it!"
⠀⠀⠀"Would you just trust me this once?" Stiles asked him.
⠀⠀⠀"No."
⠀⠀⠀"I'm the one keeping you alive, okay. Have you noticed that?" Stiles retorted.
⠀⠀⠀"Yeah, and when the paralysis wears off, who is gonna be able to fight that thing, you or me?" Derek spat back. "You don't trust me. I don't trust you. You need me to survive, which is why you are not letting me go."
⠀⠀⠀"I've also got Willow," Stiles retorted in a whisper. Yet, as they had learned before, Stiles was the worst at whispering because she and Blair could hear precisely what he was saying. "And she can kick ass as well as you."
⠀⠀⠀"Stiles!" Derek screamed as Stiles shoved him under the water and swam for his phone.
⠀⠀⠀The creature approached the edge that Stiles was headed for, nearly swiping at Stiles before he could grab the phone. Thankfully, he could get his phone without being paralyzed and swam across the pool to Blair.
⠀⠀⠀"Call Scott!" he shouted when she had the phone before diving underwater.
⠀⠀⠀Blair hastily did as she was told with one hand and fumbled through Stiles' found, found Scott's contact, and called him as Stiles dragged Derek back to the surface.
⠀⠀⠀"I can't talk right now!" Scott said before Blair could even say anything and hung up.
⠀⠀⠀Derek and Stiles breached the surface, panting, and turned to them.
⠀⠀⠀"Tell me you got him," Derek pleaded.
⠀⠀⠀"He hung up on me," Blair stated, her jaw slack in exasperation.
⠀⠀⠀"Try again," Stiles told her.
⠀⠀⠀Blair tried to do as he said, but the screen was frozen.
⠀⠀⠀"There's too much water in it," Blair explained, smashing her thumb against the thumb to try and get it to work, but nothing happened.
⠀⠀⠀"It's hopeless," Willow sighed. "We're all gonna die."
⠀⠀⠀"Willow, don't be a Negative Nancy!" Stiles shouted at her.
⠀⠀⠀"Well, what do you want me to do? Want me to be positive?" Willow retorted in irritation. "I can't wait to die! I bet it's going to be a nice summer vacation with my good friend, the Reaper!"
⠀⠀⠀"That's not what I meant—!"
⠀⠀⠀"Would you two shut up!" Derek snapped at them.
⠀⠀⠀"I think my legs are gonna fall off soon," Blair commented, sighing.
⠀⠀⠀"Same here," Stiles sighed, looking around the pool and toward the diving board. "Over there. We can try to hold onto that.
⠀⠀⠀The two swam across the pool with Willow and Derek still in their arms. Stiles tried to catch the board first but missed and ended up sinking.
⠀⠀⠀Blair gasped.
⠀⠀⠀"Willow, do you trust me?" Blair asked her.
⠀⠀⠀"I trust you."
⠀⠀⠀"Alright, I'm gonna pull them up. Just hold your breath for as long as you can."
⠀⠀⠀Willow nodded her head, and Blair let her go. Willow fell back, taking in a gasp of air before going under. She sank to the bottom while Blair moved away toward Derek and Stiles. Blair grabbed Stiles first, stuck in Derek's arms because of his paralyzed grip, and helped him out. Then she helped pull Derek up, and from the water above, another person helped get them out.
⠀⠀⠀Willow's lungs began to burn when Scott headed down into the water, confusing Willow when she saw him. He grabbed her hands, pulled her up to the surface, and forced her onto the side of the pool.
⠀⠀⠀There wasn't a second of peace when the creature came back into the fire, Scott and the creature fighting across the pool. However, Willow was too tired and out of it to really pay attention. Until it grew unsettlingly quiet, and she saw Scott holding a piece of shattered glass up to the creature. It only stood there, staring at its reflection before sprinting away.
"WELL," BLAIR SIGHED, everyone outside in the parking lot and back to normal. Derek and Willow were back on their feet. "I think I'm going to go home, now."
⠀⠀⠀"Are you okay?" Willow asked, catching her arm in worry.
⠀⠀⠀"Yeah," Blair assured her, although it sounded like she was struggling to say it. "I just need some time," she explained with a small smile, patting Willow's hand and walking to her car, leaving.
⠀⠀⠀Scott, Stiles, and Willow were left outside, unsure what to do next except wait for Derek to come out with Erica.
⠀⠀⠀"You don't know a clothes drying spell, do you?" Stiles asked once Blair was gone.
⠀⠀⠀"No," Willow sighed, running her hand through her wet hair. "Sorry."
⠀⠀⠀Scott sighed.
⠀⠀⠀"I'm glad you guys are okay," he told them, and Willow and Stiles both smiled back at him.
⠀⠀⠀"Thank you for saving us," Willow told him.
⠀⠀⠀Scott smiled, and the two hugged tightly, relieved they were all okay. She released him from the hug. The two were standing side to side with her arm around his waist and his over her shoulder. The embrace reassured both of them everything was okay.
⠀⠀⠀"Blair knows now," Stiles sighed.
⠀⠀⠀"Yeah," Willow muttered. "She wasn't supposed to."
⠀⠀⠀"It was a matter of time," Scott said with a frown, reflecting on his own experience with Allison. "She won't tell anyone, will she?"
⠀⠀⠀"No, I trust her," Willow assured him.
⠀⠀⠀Scott nodded, then dug into his pocket on the other side of Willow. He held up a ring of keys in his hand to them.
⠀⠀⠀"These are from Gerard," Scott explained as the two stared at them in confusion. "I came here to tell you guys that the bestiary isn't a physical book. It's on this USB."
⠀⠀⠀Scott moved away from Willow, picked up his backpack on the ground, and plugged the USB in. The three crowded around the computer and watched as Scott opened the PDF of the bestiary. There was a moment of silence as they stared at the screen, still unclear what they were even looking for. None of it made sense.
⠀⠀⠀"That's Latin," Willow commented, pointing at the text.
⠀⠀⠀"Can you read it?" Scott asked her.
⠀⠀⠀Willow squinted her eyes at it, then shook her head.
⠀⠀⠀"I know spells and the shit they teach here," Willow explained, her shoulders falling in disappointment in her own ability. Then, finally, she threw her hand at the screen and sighed, "This is archaic, anyway."
⠀⠀⠀"How are we supposed to figure out what that thing is?" Scott sighed.
⠀⠀⠀"It's called a kanima," Derek said from behind them.
⠀⠀⠀The three turned away from the laptop and back to Derek, who reluctantly stood with them. Erica was a few steps away from Derek, not saying a word to the three she had been eager to threaten earlier.
⠀⠀⠀"You knew the whole time," Stiles accused, spitting out his words in annoyance.
⠀⠀⠀"No," Derek told him, not annoyed by Stiles for once. "Only when it was confused by its own reflection."
⠀⠀⠀"It doesn't know what it is," Scott realized.
⠀⠀⠀"Or who," Derek added.
⠀⠀⠀"What else do you know?" Stiles pressed, narrowing his eyes at Derek.
⠀⠀⠀"Just stories," Derek explained. "Rumors."
⠀⠀⠀"But it's like us?" Scott asked.
⠀⠀⠀"A shape-shifter, yes," Derek nodded. "But it's—it's not right. It's like a—"
⠀⠀⠀"An abomination," Stiles finished for him.
⠀⠀⠀Derek looked at Stiles and nodded at his choice of word. He turned to Erica, nodding his head for them to leave, but Scott wasn't finished.
⠀⠀⠀"Derek! We need to work together on this. Maybe even tell the Argents," Scott stated.
⠀⠀⠀"You trust them?" Derek hissed.
⠀⠀⠀"Nobody trusts anyone!" Scott exclaimed. "That's the problem. While we're here, arguing about who's on what side, there's something scarier, stronger, and faster than any of us, and it's killing people! And we still don't even know anything about it."
⠀⠀⠀"I know one thing," Derek stated, turning and beginning to walk away, but his words lingered behind him. "When I find it. I'm gonna kill it!"
⠀⠀⠀Derek and Erica left, leaving the three in the parking lot alone. Scott sighed, packing his things.
⠀⠀⠀"I'll talk to you guys later," he muttered.
⠀⠀⠀"I'll talk to my mom. Maybe she knows something about this since I have a name for it," Willow explained.
⠀⠀⠀Scott nodded and got into his car.
⠀⠀⠀"Night, man," Stiles said, waving as he bent down to be face to face with Scott.
⠀⠀⠀"Night."
⠀⠀⠀Scott pulled out of the parking lot, and then it was only Stiles and Willow.
⠀⠀⠀"Hey, can you drive me home?" Willow asked Stiles.
⠀⠀⠀Stiles glanced at her then the parking lot with no other car besides his rental.
⠀⠀⠀"Did your car get stolen?" Stiles asked.
⠀⠀⠀"I don't have a car," Willow told him. "I came with Blair, but, um—"
⠀⠀⠀"Right," Stiles muttered.
⠀⠀⠀"I didn't want to bother her," Willow explained, raising her hands.
⠀⠀⠀"It's not a problem, Will," Stiles assured her, leading her to his car. "Anytime."
⠀⠀⠀"Thanks."
