Chapter 5
Jane and Unworthy were in the garden having lunch. It was a rare occasion where Mistress had been away all day and they had the house to themselves. Well, almost, thought Jane, remembering her encounter from a week ago. She shook the memory from her head and bit into her tuna salad sandwich. It was nice to have regular food again, and not lobster or roast (although they were delicious). Unworthy was cracking nonsensical jokes, and laughing way too hard at them. A few were funny, Jane even laughed along with her every so often. Before long, Mistress had returned, and was ordering Unworthy around once again. "Well, it was fun while it lasted," said Unworthy, grinning as she always did. Jane smiled back and headed to her room. Unworthy had been chasing her around the manor for hours, and she was ready to fall asleep. She flopped onto the bed and began snoring before her head even hit the pillow.
It was raining when she woke up. She immediately decided that today was 'later' and went to the room with the oak door. Or, at least, she tried to, but Unworthy stopped her. She insisted that she come down for breakfast. Because she was so hungry, she accepted. Mistress was once again telling her about her exploits. Today, the topic of conversation was her old fiancé. "When I was 13, I was betrothed to a simply beautiful man. Just gorgeous," she began. "But unfortunately, my love was unrequited. He left me at the altar. That's how I came to live alone with dearest Unworthy here. Isn't that right, Unworthy?" The mistress maintained a smile through all of this. It was exactly the same the whole time through, but her eyes flashed from menacing to bitter to infuriated. Unworthy nodded only once, odd for such an eccentric girl, and set down their breakfast that, in all honesty, was more reminiscent of dessert.
It was almost an hour before she could get to the oak doors. When she turned the brass knob and stepped inside, Phantom was staring out the window. She cleared her throat, and Phantom's head whipped around. "You came back," she said monotonously. Jane nodded. "I wanted to know why it was such a big deal that there were two Waywards." Phantom looked hesitant, but eventually answered.
