Chapter 40

Jeffrey had driven us around L.A. before hitting the coast again and driving us along the water. He still hadn't told me where the last place we were going was. I leaned my head against the back of the seat and looked out the window. Jeffrey still had the radio turned on and was tapping his fingers on the steering wheel to the beat.

The car slowed and Jeffrey made a right hand turn away from the water. We were heading back into a quieter side of L.A. We made our way around a couple side streets before making another right hand turn and coming to a housing complex that seemed to go up the hill into neverland. Jeffrey slowed to a stop in front of a gate.

He rolled down his window and punched a code into a small box before setting back in his seat and rolling up his window. The gate in front of us slowly opened and Jeffrey made his way through it. Winding his way up the hill we finally came to a stop at what seemed like the top but I noticed there was still a few houses above us.

Jeffrey pulled into a long driveway and made his way behind a house that seemed like it was huge and way out of my price range. Jeffrey parked his car and shut it off before getting out in a hurried fashion and making his way around to my side of the car. He opened my door and offered me a hand which I gladly took.

I was still wearing his jacket which I was grateful for because it was still a little chilly on the hill. Jeffrey shut my door and pulled me into him. He wrapped his arm around my waist and lead me away from the car. "So what are we doing here?" I asked him as I took in the sight around me. The back of the house was beautiful.

The grass was nice and green. There was a two car detached garage with a basketball hoop attached to it. There was a huge playground on the grass along with a playhouse. Jeffey directed us towards the back deck that was lit up with solar lights. It had a grill and working sink on it as well.

"Well," Jeffrey said as he pulled us towards the back door. He took his keys out of his pocket and shoved one of the keys in the lock on the back door. He let the door fall open by itself and gently pushed me through the threshold. I took in the empty house around us. Coming through the back door had landed us in the kitchen and what looked like an attached dining room.

"Wow," I breathed as I took in the space around us. Anyone would be jealous of the size of the kitchen. There would be no way I could fill all the cabinets and the giant pantry. "Nice, huh?" Jeffrey asked as he pulled me through the house into what I guessed was the living room or maybe a den.

I nodded as I took in the high ceilings and the wood floors. "Yeah, it's really nice," I said. Jeffrey pulled me towards the other side of the room where a door was. He opened it revealing a secret stairwell. I felt like a child going on a treasure hunt. I slipped off my heels so I didn't fall and made my way up the stairs with Jeffrey right behind me.

We came to a small landing that had another door on it. "It's just a closet," Jeffrey said as he turned me to keep walking up another small set of stairs. How did he know what was in there? We came to the top of the stairs where a hallway greeted us. I noticed multiple doors and assumed these were bedrooms and potential bathrooms.

Jeffrey opened the first door that was at the top of the stairs. It was a smaller bedroom that had a nice thick carpet. There wasn't a closet in it though so I assumed it was most likely used as an office of some sort. Jeffrey shut the door and lead me to the next. This one was a full size bathroom.

He shut the door and lead me to the next. This was another bedroom. It was bigger than the last and it had a closet in it. Jeffrey shut the door and directed me towards the next one. This one was clearly a laundry room with a washer and dryer hook up. It was bigger than one of the bathrooms in the house Charlie and I were staying in.

Jeffrey shut the door and lead me to the last set of doors that were at the end of the hallway. This was a set of french doors. Jeffrey grabbed both handles and pushed them open. The doors slowly opened before resting against the walls. This room was huge and I assumed that it was the master bedroom.

I walked in, Jeffrey right behind me. This room seemed bigger than the living room in my own house. "Wow," I breathed as Jeffrey pulled me into the room so that I could look at it better. There was a huge master bathroom to the right. I walked in and turned on the lights. There was a double sink, a shower that could fit at least ten people and, and a huge jet tub in the middle that I could see sinking myself into after a long day at work.

"This is beautiful," I told Jeffrey. He pulled me out of the bathroom and to the opposite side of the room. He opened a sliding glass door and we were greeted by the cool night air. Jeffrey and I stepped out on a small private balcony that overlooked the backyard. I looked up and was greeted by bright twinkling stars.

I turned towards Jeffrey who was already looking down at me with a smile on his face. He lowered his face to mine and gave me a soft kiss. "I love you," he said as he pulled back. He made it come out so easily. I smiled up at him and leaned forward to rest my hands on the banister. "So why exactly did you bring me here?"

~~

"You what?!" I asked him in disbelief. We were currently sitting down in the kitchen. There wasn't a table and chairs but that was okay. Jeffrey had lifted me up on the counter on the island that was in the middle of the big kitchen. He had pulled out another bottle of champagne that was in the fridge along with a couple glasses out of the cabinet.

Had he been here before? "Don't go losing your marbles," Jeffrey chuckled as he popped the cork on the champagne. He poured a generous amount of champagne in my glass before taking a huge gulp straight from the bottle for himself. I chuckled as I took a sip of my champagne before sitting the glass on the counter.

"I'm sorry, I already have," I said. Jeffrey placed the bottle on the counter next to my glass and put his hands on my knees. He parted them gently and stepped between them. I brought my hands up and placed them on his chest. Jeffrey smiled down at me. "I don't get what the big deal is," Jeffrey said as he snaked his arms behind me and rested his hands on the counter.

"The big deal? I can't afford this! I can barely afford what I have now," I said. "Baby...baby, baby, baby," Jeffrey breathed with a small chuckle as he rested his forehead against my shoulder. "Nobody asked you to pay for anything," he said. I sighed and brought my hands up to his hair playing with it gently.

"I would have to contribute, that's the only way it would make me feel better," I said. Jeffrey shook his head and raised up to look at me. "It may, but I won't allow it. I can afford this....for us," he said while rubbing my back. I sighed and played with the hair at the base of his neck tugging gently pulling him towards me.

Jeffrey's lips connected with mine in a short sweet kiss. He tasted of champagne and stale cigarettes but it was something I had gotten used to and loved. I pulled back and placed my forehead against his. "Are you sure?" I asked him. He kissed me against quickly. "Definitely," he breathed while pulling back and grabbing the bottle of champagne again.

I grabbed my glass and held it up to him. He clinked the bottle with my glass and kept it there as he looked at me. I rolled my eyes and huffed before nodding. "Fine, if you insist," I told him. He let out a small cheer before placing the bottle to his lips and taking another drink. I chuckled and finished off my glass before sitting it on the counter again.

Jeffrey helped me down off the counter and pulled me into a giant hug. "You're the best," he said. I patted his back lightly. "Yeah, yeah, just don't tell anyone," I told him. He pulled back and quickly grabbed my chin. His thumb came up to my bottom lip and he rubbed it gently. I parted my lips and Jeffrey leaned forwards capturing my lips in his.

He pressed me against the counter and I groaned into his mouth as I felt the heat run straight to my stomach. Jeffrey's fingers pushed into my hips as he bit my bottom lip. "God, I love you," he breathed against my lips before pulling back and resting his forward against mine. His breath fanned across my face.

"So are you really doing this?" I asked him. He nodded. "I can sign off on the papers before we head back to Rhinebeck," he said. Jeffrey took a step back and put the now empty glass in the sink. "You've been here already, haven't you?" I asked him. Jeffrey gave me a small smile but nodded.

"Yeah, when I told you I had to take care of a couple things here in L.A. before heading back, this is what I meant," he said. Jeffrey grabbed my hand and pulled me towards the back door. He flipped the lights off and closed the back door behind us. He locked the door and handed a key to me.

I smiled as I took it from him and tucked it into my purse. Jeffrey walked us back to the car and opened my door for me before going around to the driver's side and climbing in. He turned the car around and headed out of the driveway. "You okay?" he asked as he pulled out on to the road. I nodded.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I just can't believe you bought a freaking house!"
