*Now*

Charlie unbuckled her seat belt and took off out of the car as soon as it stopped. "Charlie, wait!" I called out trying to get out of the car with her but she was too quick. I sighed and got out of the car to see she was already in Jeffrey's arms. I slowly walked up to the both of them. Honey was sitting loyally at his feet.

"Hey," I said softly. He smiled. "Hi yourself," he said. I was nervous, way more nervous than what I ever have been. "Where should we do this?" I asked him wanting to get this over with immediately so we could focus on something else. Jeffrey nodded towards the house. "How about in the living room? We can get comfortable on the couches," he said. I nodded and he turned to go inside with Charlie still in his arms.

Honey followed him slowly and turned to look at me, almost like she was wondering if I was coming. I picked up the pace and followed Jeffrey and Honey up the stairs. Jeffrey wiped his muddy boots on the mat and opened the wooden screen door. He gestured for me to go first as Honey walked in front of me.

I took off my shoes at the front door and faced Jeffrey. Charlie was still in his arms clinging to his neck. I followed him into the living room, where he plopped Charlie down on the couch before sitting across from her in an arm chair. I joined Charlie on the couch and faced Jeffrey. I didn't even know where to begin this conversation.

Jeffrey looked at me with an encouraging look. I sighed and faced Charlie. "You know mommy loves you very much, right?" I asked Charlie. She nodded and looked down at her feet. She had no idea what was going on. "Well, mommy has something very important to tell you," I said trying to find the right words.

I looked at Jeffrey who was now looking over at Charlie intently trying to read her face. "Well mommy loved you so much, that mommy carried you in my belly for nine months," I said still trying to find the proper words to say. I looked at Jeffrey and he nodded and gestured for me to continue.

"That's a long time!" Charlie exclaimed. Both Jeffrey and I chuckled. "Yes, that is a very long time baby. It wasn't easy for mommy. You know how everyone has a mommy and a daddy, right?" I asked. She nodded. "I have a mommy," she said. I nodded. "But you don't have a daddy, right?" I asked.

Charlie frowned and nodded. "But I have an Aunt Brittany!" she said excitedly. I laughed a little, but Jeffrey didn't. "Well, Charlie. You do have a daddy," I said spitting the words out before I lost the courage. Charlie's eyes became wide. "I do?!" she asked looking up at me. I nodded feeling tears well in my eyes.

"Yes, Charlie, you do. And I'm sorry that I didn't tell you. Mommy thought it would be better if you didn't know, but I realize now that I was wrong," I said. My voice faltered at the end and I dipped my head feeling the tears starting to spill out. I tried to choke them back but a couple slipped out.

I heard Jeffrey stand up and before I knew it he was sitting on the other side of Charlie. "Hey doll," he said as he sat beside her and placed his arm around her. His hand reached for mine. I didn't move, but allowed for him to take my hand in his.

"Are you my daddy?" Charlie asked Jeffrey. Those words squeezed at my heart. They hurt, but at the same time I felt a sense of relief wash over me. "Yes, Charlie I am. I'm sorry I haven't been around, but I hope we can make up for our missed time," he said as he squeezed my hand. I looked over at Charlie with tears in my eyes.

Charlie jumped off the couch. "You're my daddy?! That's so cool! You have a farm with a bunch of animals! And you're on T.V.," she exclaimed. Jeffrey nodded. "How did you know I was on T.V?" Jeffrey asked her. Charlie turned to face him with a huge smile on her face. "Uncle Jensen told me he used to work with my daddy and Uncle Jensen is on T.V!" she squealed. I nodded still watching her process all of this.

It boggled my mind that she could put all of this together so quickly. Charlie ran off with Honey who was excited that Charlie was now up and running. She went out the front door and down in the yard with Honey following right behind her. Jeffrey and I got off the couch and followed her outside.

I leaned against the banister with Jeffrey right beside me. "That went better than expected," he said as he watched Charlie run around the yard with Honey. I nodded. "That was only half of the conversation. It's not over. She's gonna have questions," I said. Jeffrey nodded and crossed his arms.

"I understand. I would still like her to spend the night," he said. I shrugged slightly. "Let her run off some energy. She seems wired now that she's got that information. Then we'll ask her. I'm not gonna force it on her though. If she says no, then we're leaving," I said. Jeffrey nodded again.

"I get it. This is completely on her terms," he said. Charlie continued to run around with Honey running after her barking happily. "Do you want something to drink?" Jeffrey asked me. I nodded. "That would be great," I said. Jeffrey pushed himself off the banister and walked in the house.

"Charlie!" I hollered out. She stopped running and looked up at me. "What momma?" she called back. I waved her up to the porch just as the screen door squeaked. Charlie came barrelling up on the porch. Honey was right behind her and went straight to her water bowl. Charlie plopped down in one of the deck chairs.

Jeffrey handed her a juice box and turned to me. I eyed the beverage of choice in his hand. "I figured you could use it to calm your nerves," he said as he handed it to me. I nodded and took a drink of the beer he handed me. The cool bubbles went up my nose but it instantly warmed me and calmed me.

"Thanks," I said as I sat it on the banister. I faced Charlie. "Baby, we have one more thing to ask you," I said as I sat in a deck chair across from her. Jeffrey came up and stood beside me. Charlie slurped on her juice box but nodded her head. Jeffrey sat his beer down on the arm rest of my chair and went to kneel in front of Charlie.

"I know this has all been a lot to digest today, Sweetheart. If you ever have any questions you can ask either of us," Jeffrey said while patting her knee. Charlie nodded and put her juice box down. "But Charlie we want to know if you want to stay with Jeffrey tonight?" I asked her. Charlie's eyes shot to mine.

"Where would I sleep?" she asked. Jeffey stood up and offered his hand to her. "Let me show you," he said. Charlie jumped out of her chair and grabbed Jeffrey's hand. I stood up and followed them as we went inside and through the house. Jeffrey's house was huge and it felt like you could get lost in it.

Jeffrey lead Charlie down a hallway and opened a door. "Charlie, this will be your room whenever you want to come visit," he said as he lead her inside the room. I followed behind him as Charlie gasped and looked around the room. It was covered from floor to ceiling in pink. Charlie squealed excitedly.

There was a full size bed in the corner of the room that was done in white with giant fluffy pillows. In the other corner was a dresser with a flat screen T.V. Charlie jumped up on the bed. "This is so cool!" she said. Jeffrey leaned against the wall and looked over at me. "Jensen helped me out," he said.

I nodded as I leaned up against the door frame. There was a play barn in the corner with a stuffed horse inside. "Do you like it, Charlie? What do you say?" I asked her. Charlie jumped off the bed and ran into Jeffrey's arms. She gave him a giant hug before looking at me while still in his arms.

"I love it momma! Thank you, Mr. Jeffrey!," Charlie said while getting back down to look at all the toys and everything in her new room. "So what do you say, Charlie? Do you want to stay one night?" Jeffrey asked her. Charlie bounced up and down excitedly. "Yes!" she said as she jumped up in her new bed.

Jeffrey smiled and turned to me with a thumbs up. I smiled too but inside there was a pull at my heart strings. "I'll go get her bag out of my car," I said quickly turning and walking down the hallway. I walked outside and straight to my car as the tears started to fall. I opened the trunk and grabbed her overnight bag.

I wiped away the tears and closed the trunk. I jumped seeing Jeffrey standing right beside my car. "Jesus! You scared me!" I said holding my hand to my heart. Jeffrey smiled sadly. "Are you okay?" he asked. I nodded. "This is gonna be a little difficult for me, but yeah. I'll be fine. It will get easier with time," I said.

I handed Jeffrey her overnight bag. "Okay, so her pajamas, toothbrush, toothpaste, and hairbrush are in there. Along with her favorite stuffed cat. Its name is Catstiel," I said. Jeffrey cocked an eyebrow at me. I chuckled. "Don't ask," I said. He shouldered her bag. "Anything else I need to know?" he asked.

I nodded. "There's an extra night light in there. She's afraid of the dark and I didn't know if you had one or not. Don't give her anything to drink an hour before bed. Make sure she uses the bathroom and brushes her teeth before bed as well," I said. Jeffrey nodded. "I think we can handle all of that," he said.

"She's not allergic to anything but she is a picky eater. She doe-," Jeffrey interrupteded me with a bone crushing hug. His familiar scent engulfed me instantly. He smelled like earth, mint gum, and a small hint of cigarettes. I pulled back. "What was that for?" I asked him as his arms dropped from around me.

He shrugged as we started walking back towards the house. "You look like you needed it. Look, if I need anything I'll call or text you. If Charlie gets scared or wants to come home, I'll bring her personally. But please let me figure some things out by myself. I need to get to know my daughter," he said as we walked back inside.

When we made it back to Charlie's new room she was playing with some of her new toys. Jeffrey dropped her bag at the foot of her bed. "Alright, baby, mommy is going to leave. I have to get up early in the morning," I said. Charlie stopped playing and ran over to me. She jumped in my arms instantly.

"I love you so much. You be good for Jeffrey, okay?" I said. I wasn't comfortable saying daddy yet. I also didn't know what Jeffrey or Charlie would think. "I will, momma. Can I call you later before I go to bed?" she asked. I nodded. "Absolutely. You call me if you need anything," I said as I put her down and kissed her forehead.

"I'll let myself out," I said to Jeffrey. He shook his head and grabbed Charlie's hand. "No, we'll walk you to the door," he said. It was quiet between all of us as we walked through the house and back outside. I turned to Charlie and gave her one last hug. "I'll see you tomorrow, baby," I said.

I stood up and turned to Jeffrey. "Call or text me if you need anything," I said. He nodded and reached out to squeeze my shoulder. "Everything will be fine. We'll call you in a little bit," he said and I nodded as I started walking down the steps. I made it to my car and got in. When I looked up Charlie and Jeffrey were still standing on the porch.

They were holding hands and Charlie was waving to me. I waved back before starting my car and putting the car in reverse. I slowly started backing down the driveway. I watched as Charlie jumped in Jeffrey's arms. He spun her in a circle before opening the door and taking her inside the house. I frowned.

I was happy that things went so smoothly, but something inside me was hurting. Besides Charlie spending the night at Brittany's on occasion I was used to having Charlie with me all the time. I pulled onto the road and started driving back towards my house, leaving the fence line of Jeffrey's farm in the rearview mirror.
